Effects Of Lighting Schedule And Ascorbic Acid On Performance And Tibiotarsus Bone Characteristics In Broilers, Hüseyi̇n Yildiz, Meti̇n Petek, Gürsel Sönmez, İlker Arican, Bestami̇ Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to determine the effects of 2 lighting programs (continuous: 24 h light:0 h dark; intermittent: 12 h daylight followed by 3 cycles of 1 h light, and then 3 h dark during the night) and 3 ascorbic acid supplementations (0, 200, and 400 mg/L added to water) on broiler performance, bone characteristics, and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia. One-day-old male commercial (Ross PM_3) broiler chicks (600) were divided into 6 treatment groups (2 × 3) with random replicates (4 replicates per treatment). At the end of 6 weeks data revealed that the lighting program, which was …

Upping The Ante: Collective Litigation In Latin America, Ángel Oquendo Jan 2009

Upping The Ante: Collective Litigation In Latin America, Ángel Oquendo

Faculty Articles and Papers

This work contends that Latin America has launched a true revolution on collective rights: moving beyond the paradigm of group entitlements, which concern a determinate — though potentially enormous — collectivity, to that of diffuse entitlements, which generally pertain to society as a whole. Latin American jurisdictions have created innovative procedural mechanisms in this area: the collective writ of protection for the realization of group rights, the popular action for the civic vindication of diffuse entitlements, and the public civil action for the official enforcement of both kinds of rights. The U.S. legal order has much to learn from a …

Red: Racism And The American Indian, Bethany Berger

Faculty Articles and Papers

How does racism work in American Indian law and policy? Scholarship on the subject has too often assumed that racism works for Indians in the same way that it does for African Americans, and has therefore either emphasized the presence of hallmarks of White-Black racism, such as uses of blood quantum, as evidence of racism, or has emphasized the lack of such hallmarks, such as prohibitions on interracial marriage, to argue that racism is not a significant factor. This Article surveys the different eras of Indian-White interaction to argue that racism has been important in those interactions, but has worked …

Solar Rights, Sara Bronin Jan 2009

Solar Rights, Sara Bronin

Faculty Articles and Papers

The rights to access and to harness the rays of the sun - solar rights - are extremely valuable. These rights can determine whether and how an individual can take advantage of the sun’s light, warmth, or energy, and they can have significant economic consequences. Accordingly, for at least two thousand years, people have attempted to assign solar rights in a fair and efficient manner. In the United States, attempts to assign solar rights have fallen short. A quarter century ago, numerous American legal scholars debated this deficiency. They agreed that this country lacked a coherent legal framework for the …

Creating A Paternalistic Market For Legal Rules Affecting The Benefit Promise, Brendan Maher Jan 2009

Creating A Paternalistic Market For Legal Rules Affecting The Benefit Promise, Brendan Maher

Faculty Articles and Papers

Notwithstanding the fact that ERISA was enacted to protect employee benefits, courts have narrowly construed the relief available when benefits are denied, out of concern that a stronger remedy would be too costly for the system to bear. Judges, I argue, are ill-equipped to make this policy judgment. Instead, a regulated, subsidized, paternalistic market should be created to permit the benefit players themselves to choose and price the strength of the remedy they desire. This is a superior means to reach the right level of remedial strength for the most players. To protect against undesirably weak remedial options being selected, …

Pathological, Immunohistochemical, And Bacteriological Findings In The Mammary Glands And Supramammary Lymph Nodes Of Cows With A History Of Abortion Due To Brucella Abortus, Enver Beytut, Mi̇that Şahi̇n, Serpi̇l Ergi̇nsoy, Mahmut Sözmen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study examined the mammary glands and supramammary lymph nodes of cows with a history of abortion due to Brucella abortus, and presents the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and bacteriological results. The study included 11 Brucella-seropositive cows that aborted during their first gestation. Histopathologically, the mammary glands showed lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic interstitial mastitis. The lymph nodes had lymphofollicular hyperplasia and medullary plasmacytosis. Immunohistochemistry results showed brucellar antigens, predominantly in the cytoplasm of macrophages, and neutrophils in the intralobular interstitium and periductal stroma in the udders of 3 cows. Desquamated alveolar epithelium also indicated intense immunopositivity. In the lymph nodes, macrophages containing …

Near Fatal Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome Complicating Chronic Liver Failure And Treated By Induced Hypothermia And Dialysis: A Case Report., Rashmi Chawla, Daniel Smith, Paul E Marik

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a clinico-neuroradiological entity characterized by headache, vomiting, altered mental status, blurred vision and seizures with neuroimaging studies demonstrating white-gray matter edema involving predominantly the posterior region of the brain. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 47-year-old Caucasian man with liver cirrhosis who developed posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome following an upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and who was managed with induced hypothermia for control of intracranial hypertension and continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration for severe hyperammonemia. CONCLUSION: We believe this is the first documented case report of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome associated with cirrhosis as well as the first report …

Jail Visitation: An Assessment Of Organizational Policy And Information Availability, Alicia H. Sitren, Hayden P. Smith, Brandon K. Applegate, Laurie A. Gould

Faculty Publications

Jail inmates face substantial emotional, economic, legal, and other challenges when they are incarcerated. The extent to which they are able to maintain contacts with individuals on the outside can substantially determine how well they cope with these concerns, and visitation is the primary way that such links may be maintained. To date, no systematic assessment of jail visitation policies has been conducted. The current study examined the availability of visitation policy information and the content of policies for national samples of large and small jails. The results suggest that large jails provide more opportunities for visitation and that they …

Osteoarthritis Associated With Estrogen Deficiency., Jorge A Roman-Blas, Santos Castañeda, Raquel Largo, Gabriel Herrero-Beaumont

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects all articular tissues and finally leads to joint failure. Although articular tissues have long been considered unresponsive to estrogens or their deficiency, there is now increasing evidence that estrogens influence the activity of joint tissues through complex molecular pathways that act at multiple levels. Indeed, we are only just beginning to understand the effects of estrogen deficiency on articular tissues during OA development and progression, as well as on the association between OA and osteoporosis. Estrogen replacement therapy and current selective estrogen receptor modulators have mixed effectiveness in preserving and/or restoring joint tissue in OA. Thus, a …

The Curing Law: On The Evolution Of Baby-Making Markets, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2009

The Curing Law: On The Evolution Of Baby-Making Markets, Noa Ben-Asher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The article offers a new paradigm to examine the legal regulation of reproductive technologies. The main argument is that a cure paradigm has shaped historical and current legal baby-making markets. Namely, reproductive technologies that have historically been understood as a cure for infertility (such as sperm donations and egg donations) have developed into market commodities, while others (such as full surrogacy) which have not been understood as a cure, have not. The article examines and critiques the cure paradigm. Specifically, the article challenges one current manifestation of the cure paradigm: the legal distinction between 'full surrogacy" (where a surrogate is …
