Obesity And Contraception, Donald E. Greydanus, Hatim A. Omar, Artemis Tsitsika Jan 2009

Obesity And Contraception, Donald E. Greydanus, Hatim A. Omar, Artemis Tsitsika

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

All sexually active youth, whether obese or normal weight, should be offered counseling regarding contraception and appropriate contraceptive methods. However, obese youth who are sexually active may be less likely than their normal weight peers to use contraceptives correctly. Methods of contraception for obese adolescents are reviewed in this discussion. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and the contraceptive patch have higher failure rates in obese versus normal weight females, though failure rates are lower than noted with barrier contraceptives. The risk for venous thrombosis is higher in obese youth on COCs. Progestin-only pills and the levonorgestrel intrauterine system appear to be …

Extending The Shadow Of The Law: Using Hybrid Mechanisms To Establish Constitutional Norms In Socioeconomic Rights Cases, Brian E. Ray Jan 2009

Extending The Shadow Of The Law: Using Hybrid Mechanisms To Establish Constitutional Norms In Socioeconomic Rights Cases, Brian E. Ray

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Article challenges the general perception that ADR processes cannot develop public law norms. It follows a recent trend in ADR literature that seeks to define a public norm creation role for ADR in part by connecting these processes to other alternative legal and political problem-solving methods. This Article focuses on a recent South African Constitutional Court case, Occupiers of 51 Olivia Road v City of Johannesburg, in which the court interpreted the right to housing in the South African Constitution. The court held that municipalities must develop processes for negotiating - or, in the court's language "engaging" - with …

The Duty To Rescue Space Tourists And Return Private Spacecraft, Mark J. Sundahl Jan 2009

The Duty To Rescue Space Tourists And Return Private Spacecraft, Mark J. Sundahl

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

International space law has long imposed a duty to rescue astronauts and return errant spacecraft to the launching state. However, the existing space law treaties contain a number of gaps and interpretational problems that, among other things, call into question whether the duty to rescue and return applies to space tourists and spacecraft owned by private companies. These issues are of critical importance to the survival of the new space tourism industry, which is made up of a growing number of companies - such as Virgin Galactic, Rocketplane, and Blue Origin - that intend to launch their maiden flights in …

Rarely Tried, And . . . Rarely Successful: Theoretically Impossible Price Predation Among The Airlines, Christopher L. Sagers Jan 2009

Rarely Tried, And . . . Rarely Successful: Theoretically Impossible Price Predation Among The Airlines, Christopher L. Sagers

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Two large bodies of literature bearing on the competitive health of the deregulated airlines are in sharp conflict: (1) the volumes of judicial and academic output to the effect that the phenomenon of predatory pricing is, as a practical matter, impossible; and (2) the similarly massive body of industry-specific theory and empirical evidence that predation not only occurs in airline markets, but has been a key tool to preserve market power held by the surviving legacy carriers. This article seeks to establish from the latter that the former is a poor basis for policy, especially if there is nothing really …

A Missed Opportunity: How Pakootas V. Teck Cominco Metals, Ltd. Could Have Clarified The Extraterritoriality Doctrine, Jennifer S. Addis Jan 2009

A Missed Opportunity: How Pakootas V. Teck Cominco Metals, Ltd. Could Have Clarified The Extraterritoriality Doctrine, Jennifer S. Addis

Seattle University Law Review

Part II of this Note relays the facts surrounding Pakootas v. Teck Cominco, Ltd.,gives a brief history of CERCLA and its liability requirements, and then summarizes the reasoning of both the district court and the Ninth Circuit. Part II also includes an overview of the presumption against extraterritoriality and the possible means of rebutting it. Part III addresses the question of whether the application of CERCLA in Pakootas was in fact extraterritorial and discusses some of the flaws in the Ninth Circuit's reasoning. After concluding that this was an extraterritorial application of CERCLA, this Part III then examines the …

Two Fathers, One Dad: Allocating The Paternal Obligations Between The Men Involved In The Artificial Insemination Process, Browne C. Lewis Jan 2009

Two Fathers, One Dad: Allocating The Paternal Obligations Between The Men Involved In The Artificial Insemination Process, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Nadya Suleman used sperm from a man she knows to conceive fourteen children using assisted reproduction. It is clear that Suleman is the legal mother of the children. The unanswered question is: "Are the children legally fatherless?" The answer to this question is important because experts predict that it will take well over one million dollars to support the children until they reach the age of majority. My article seeks to provide some insight into the resolution of this issue. Although Suleman did not conceived using artificial insemination, the information examined in my article may be applied to her situation. …

Comparison Of Four Different Embolic Materials For Uterine Artery Embolization In Post-Procedure Mri Enhancement, Steven David Abramowitz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The aim of this study was to assess embolic agent equivalency in uterine artery embolization (UAE) using post-procedure MRI enhancement of uterine fibroids in patients embolized using Embosphere Microspheres, (EM) Contour SE spheres (CSE), Poly-Vinyl Alcohol particles (PVA) and Bead Block spheres (BB). A total of 84 women with 6-month MRI follow-up constituted this retrospective study. Within this group, 25 women were treated with PVA, 23 were treated with CSE, 19 were treated with EM and 17 were treated with BB. Pre- and post-procedure MRI exams were analyzed for the total number of fibroids present in the uterus of each …

SUBCELLULAR LOCALIZATION OF NEDD9 AND HMB45 WITH AQUA TECHNOLOGY TO DISTINGUISH SPITZ NEVI FROM MELANOMA. Matthew C. McRae, Rossitza Lasova, Bonnie Gould-Rothberg, David Rimm (Sponsored by Deepak Narayan). Section of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Our hypothesis is that the expression level and subcellular localization of HMB45 and NEDD9 as demonstrated by the ln(nuclear/non-nuclear) Automated Quantitative Analysis (AQUA) score, defined as the subcellular AQUA ratio, will be consistently altered between benign nevi and melanoma and between Spitz nevi and Spitzoid melanoma. Our specific aims are to assess quantitative expression and subcellular localization …

Forehead Laser Doppler And Transcranial Doppler During Simulated Hypovolemia, Kathleen Samuels Jan 2009

Forehead Laser Doppler And Transcranial Doppler During Simulated Hypovolemia, Kathleen Samuels

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The present study employed lower body negative pressure (LBNP), a rapidly titratable, safe and reversible means of inducing simulated hypovolemia, for a comparison of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound of the middle cerebral artery and laser Doppler (LD) flowmetry of the forehead microvasculature. With IRB approval, 9 healthy volunteers (26.3±2.7 years) were monitored continuously with EKG, noninvasive finger arterial blood pressure (BP), and TCD positioned at the transtemporal window. After a baseline (Base) period, subjects underwent rapid onset of LBNP to -70 mmHg over the course of 1 minute, followed by progressive declines of ~10 mmHg until lightheadedness or had a …

The Rate And Time Course Of Complications In Catheter-Dependent Hemodialysis Patients, Shreya Sood Jan 2009

The Rate And Time Course Of Complications In Catheter-Dependent Hemodialysis Patients, Shreya Sood

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Many patients with end-stage renal disease come to rely on catheters as their only means of hemodialysis when other options are no longer viable. These patients have a very poor quality of life due to their chronic illness as well as many long-term complications related to the use of tunneled catheters. Many prior attempts have been made to understand these catheter-related problems. Yet, they continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in chronic catheter-reliant patients. We hope to examine the rate as well as long term time course of these complications such that in future, we may …

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation In Elderly Patients With Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Joel Robert Green Jan 2009

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation In Elderly Patients With Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Joel Robert Green

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Clinical trials investigating autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) have historically excluded elderly patients due to the risk of treatment-related morbidity related to the administration of high dose chemotherapy. While the availability of this procedure continues to expand, the elderly still represent a population for which the role of ASCT needs to be fully defined. 201 patients who underwent autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for Non Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL) at a single institution following BEAM conditioning between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2007 were retrospectively identified from the Yale University School of Medicine Bone Marrow Transplant Database. 67 patients were …

Fit Camp A Behavioral Weight Loss Program The Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Social Support, Attendance, And Motivation, Erin Marie Murnan Jan 2009

Fit Camp A Behavioral Weight Loss Program The Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Social Support, Attendance, And Motivation, Erin Marie Murnan

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Almost half of Americans between 17 and 24 years of age are enrolled in higher education. College is an important life transition period when many young adults establish independence and adopt lasting behavior patterns, especially with regard to diet and physical activity. The first years of college are often associated with weight gain therefore making weight loss and weight gain prevention interventions necessary in this population. Behavioral weight loss programs (BWLP) have shown to be effective in adults, however, to our knowledge, there have been no reports of BWLP focused solely on college-aged young adults. This study compared a 10-week …
