Reproductive Freedom In The United States And Louisiana: An Assessment Of The Last Decade, A Review Of The Current Climate, And A Scenario For The Future, Amy Granger Dec 2009

Reproductive Freedom In The United States And Louisiana: An Assessment Of The Last Decade, A Review Of The Current Climate, And A Scenario For The Future, Amy Granger

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Government began legislating abortion in the mid nineteenth century and has controlled access to this service for women ever since. With the creation of hospital boards after WWII, state control over access became further entrenched. Regulations and restrictions since Roe v. Wade limit the availability of abortion services for women served by Medicaid and other social assistance programs. The existence of a class bias around access can be seen throughout the topic's history and legislation has unfairly targeted and therefore disproportionately affects poor women. The data show that these restrictions have no impact on the number of unintended pregnancies over …

Biology Department Faculty Scholarship

The ability of cells to respond to external mechanical stimulation is a complex and robust process involving a diversity of molecular interactions. Although mechanotransduction has been heavily studied, many questions remain regarding the link between physical stimulation and biochemical response. Of significant interest has been the contribution of the transmembrane proteins involved, and integrins in particular, because of their connectivity to both the extracellular matrix and the cytoskeleton. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a mechanically based initiation molecule, syndecan-4. We first demonstrate the ability of syndecan-4 molecules to support cell attachment and spreading without the direct extracellular binding of …

Patients’ Views Of Interpersonal Continuity Of Care In Four Primary Health Care Centres Of Urban Oman, Mohammed Al-Azri M, Shyam S. Ganguly

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Interpersonal continuity of care (consulting the same physician) is widely regarded as a core value of primary care and a crucial component of quality of care. Nonetheless, interpersonal continuity as experienced by patients remains a neglected topic in Arab countries including Oman. The aim of this study was to explore how patients view interpersonal continuity of care in the primary care setting in Oman. Methods: Four primary health centres (PHCs) were selected from two urban cities in Oman. In the period June to August 2008, adult patients were surveyed by questionnaire at their PHC while waiting to see their …

Relatives’ Advice And Health Care-Seeking Behaviour In Oman, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Samir Al-Adawi, Ibrahim Al-Shafaee, Mohammed, Liyam Eloul

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: It has been well established that pathways to care are considerably modified by local, social and psychological characteristics as well as the doctor-patient relationship. Scant attention has been paid to the role of family advice in care-seeking. In Omani society, traditional family values and a collective mindset are the norm rather than the exception. This paper examines how family advice affects the trajectory of care seeking. Methodology: During 2006-2007, data was collected through face-to-face interviews among a randomised sample of patients seeking medical consultation in various primary health care centres in the northern region of Oman. This study enrolled …

A Case Of Disseminated Tuberculosis With Adrenal Insufficiency, Ali Al-Mamari, Abdullah Balkhair, Arunodaya Abid, Fatma Ben, Ahmed Al-Farqani, Aisha Al-Hamadani, Rajeev Jain

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

We present the case of a 37 year-old female who had disseminated tuberculosis (TB) with bilateral adrenal involvement resulting in primary adrenal failure (Addison’s disease) with refractory hyponatraemia and possible extrapontine ‘myelinolysis’. Laboratory results were remarkable for adrenal insufficiency. A Mantoux reaction was positive with evidence of pulmonary miliary TB. The magnetic resonance imaging scan showed all the characteristic changes of adrenal TB.

Cardiac Markers In The Early Diagnosis And Management Of Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome, Hafidh A. Al-Hadi, Keith A. Fox

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Chest pain is a non-specific complaint and is the most frequent reason for patients seeking urgent medical attention. A small group of these patients will have acute coronary syndromes (ACS). The current diagnostic and triage systems based on clinical history and electrocardiograms are insufficient. They may result in some of these patients being misdiagnosed and being admitted to the wrong units or receiving inappropriate care, treatment and investigations. In some patients, the diagnosis is delayed resulting in the late administration (or no administration) of essential early treatment. A few patients with ACS may be inadvertently discharged from the emergency department …

Challenges Of Childhood Uveitis, Reem Abdwani Dec 2009

Challenges Of Childhood Uveitis, Reem Abdwani

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Chronic uveitis is a rare, but potentially sight-threatening disease. The most common cause of chronic non-infectious uveitis is “idiopathic uveitis”. However, some systemic diseases are associated with chronic uveitis in children and are discussed. Chronic uveitis merits special consideration in children. The unique differences in children are highlighted with special consideration for the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges encountered in their management. While corticosteroids remain the mainstay of initial therapy, a wide range of immunosuppressive agents have been used with variable success. The role of immonomodulatory agents such as methotrexate, cyclosproin and some of the new biologic agents such as etanecept, …

A Case Of Amiodarone-Induced Thyrotoxicosis : A Diagnostic And Therapeutic Dilemma, Sudheer Ahamed Ps, Abe Mathew

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Amiodarone is an iodine rich agent widely used for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter. However 14-18% of patients treated with amiodarone develop overt thyroid dysfunction in the form of either amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) or amiodaroneinduced hypothyroidism (AIH). Two different types of AIT have been recognised and designated as Type 1 and Type 2. Distinguishing between the two is often difficult, but necessary for instituting appropriate treatment. We report a case of a 56 year-old male patient who was started on amiodarone for atrial fibrillation and then developed AIT. The challenges in the diagnosis …

Papillary Carcinoma Of Thethyroid Presenting Primarily As Cervical Lymphadenopathy : An Approach To Management, Norman O. Machado, Pradeep J. Chopra, Aisha Dec 2009

Papillary Carcinoma Of Thethyroid Presenting Primarily As Cervical Lymphadenopathy : An Approach To Management, Norman O. Machado, Pradeep J. Chopra, Aisha

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Papillary carcinoma of thyroid usually presents as a palpable thyroid mass. This could be associated with pain, hoarseness, stridor or dysphagia. Rarely, it presents solely as cervical lympadenopthy in the presence of an otherwise grossly normal thyroid gland. This could pose management problems. We report here a middle-aged lady who presented with cervical lymphadenopathy which on fine needle aspiration cytology was confirmed as metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma. The thyroid gland was, however, normal on clinical examination and radiological investigations. Neck exploration confirmed a grossly normal thyroid gland; however, the cervical lymph node was found to invade the internal jugular vein. …

Dopamine D2 Receptor Priming Enhances Dopaminergic Response To Amphetamine In The Nucleus Accumbens: Role Of The D1 And D2 Receptors., Kimberly Norris Huggins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In past work, we have shown neonatal quinpirole (dopamine D2/D3 agonist) treatment produces a significant increase in dopamine D2 receptor sensitivity, a phenomenon known as D2 receptor priming. Dopamine D2 receptor priming is common in psychosis. Male and female rats were administered quinpirole (1mg/kg) or saline from postnatal days 1-11 and raised to adulthood (P60). As adults, rats were administered d-amphetamine sulfate (1mg/kg) or saline every other day for 14 days. Approximately 10 min before each amphetamine or saline injection, animals were administered the D1 antagonist SCH 23390 (0.1 mg/kg), the D2 antagonist eticlopride …

Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity With Graphical Residue Models And Machine Learning., Arthur Rhydon Jackson Dec 2009

Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity With Graphical Residue Models And Machine Learning., Arthur Rhydon Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning is applied to a challenging and biologically significant protein classification problem: the prediction of flavonoid UGT acceptor regioselectivity from primary protein sequence. Novel indices characterizing graphical models of protein residues are introduced. The indices are compared with existing amino acid indices and found to cluster residues appropriately. A variety of models employing the indices are then investigated by examining their performance when analyzed using nearest neighbor, support vector machine, and Bayesian neural network classifiers. Improvements over nearest neighbor classifications relying on standard alignment similarity scores are reported.
