Living Arrangements, Intergenerational Dynamics, And Psychological Well-Being Of Elders: An Examination Of Predictors Of Elder Depression In Retired Persons In Yancheng, Jiangsu, China, Ying Wang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study explores the relationship between living arrangement and psychological wellbeing in retired elderly individuals living in Yancheng, Jiangsu (PR China). Data on mode of residence, socio-economic background, daily activities, and intergenerational dynamics were collected from 200 subjects, and their potential correlations with depression (assessed via the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Version) were analyzed. Univariate as well as logistic regression confirmed mode of residence as a significant predictor of depression in this group. The following depression odds ratios associated with each mode of residence were derived via logistic regression: 1) nuclear household, i.e. living with a spouse only - 1 …

Workin’ From Cain To Cain’T: Challenges Within Florida’S Gulf Coast Oyster Industry, Diane Marie Wakeman Nov 2009

Workin’ From Cain To Cain’T: Challenges Within Florida’S Gulf Coast Oyster Industry, Diane Marie Wakeman

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Oyster tongers are a cultural icon of Florida’s maritime heritage and geography. Challenged for generations by the vagaries of weather, including catastrophic storms and years-long droughts, and economic uncertainties this maritime heritage is fading fast. While Florida’s north and west coasts produce 90 percent of the Florida oyster harvest and ten percent of oysters consumed in the United States, the industry is at risk today for reasons including a declining demand for Florida oysters because of health concerns; water pollution; population growth and its accompanying development of condominiums, gated communities, and retail shopping centers; and declining interest in the hard …

The Long-Term Neuropsychological Outcomes In Sagittal Craniosynotosis: Limited-Strip Craniectomy Vs. Whole-Vault Cranioplasty, Anup Patel Nov 2009

The Long-Term Neuropsychological Outcomes In Sagittal Craniosynotosis: Limited-Strip Craniectomy Vs. Whole-Vault Cranioplasty, Anup Patel

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The functional morbidity in nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is not obvious. Because of this disconnect between cranial deformity and functional disability, cranial reconstructive surgery in patients with single-suture sagittal craniosynostosis has been regarded as a cosmetic intervention. However, it has been observed in a preliminary study that children with simple craniosynostosis often have a higher proportion of learning disabilities and cognitive problems as compared to nonafflicted children. The influence of modern comprehensive surgical treatment including the optimal age to perform surgery has not been well-documented. This study examined long-term neuropsychological outcomes of children and adolescents with isolated sagittal craniosynostosis undergoing either limited-strip …

Alu Repeats Increase Local Recombination Rates, David J. Witherspoon, W. Scott Watkins, Yuhua Zhang, Jinchuan Xing, Whitney L. Tolpinrud, Dale J. Hedges, Mark A. Batzer, Lynn B. Jorde

Faculty Publications

Background: Recombination rates vary widely across the human genome, but little of that variation is correlated with known DNA sequence features. The genome contains more than one million Alu mobile element insertions, and these insertions have been implicated in non-homologous recombination, modulation of DNA methylation, and transcriptional regulation. If individual Alu insertions have even modest effects on local recombination rates, they could collectively have a significant impact on the pattern of linkage disequilibrium in the human genome and on the evolution of the Alu family itself. Results: We carried out sequencing, SNP identification, and SNP genotyping around 19 AluY insertion …

The Genetic Epidemiology Of Purging Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, And Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, Sara Trace

Theses and Dissertations

Although a variety of factors influence the development of eating disorders, genetic factors contribute notably to their etiology. Understanding genetic factors associated with eating disorders is important, as they can influence how these disorders are recognized, researched, and treated. This dissertation included two studies addressing important questions within the fields of eating disorders and genetics; specifically, Study 1 addressed the prevalence and heritability of purging and purging disorder in a population-based sample of female twins from the United States; and Study 2 investigated the nature of the co-morbidity between anorexia nervosa and obsessive compulsive personality disorder in a population-based sample …

Bulletin Suivant And Ministère De La Guerre, Chelsea Lindeman, Emily Wisser Nov 2009

Bulletin Suivant And Ministère De La Guerre, Chelsea Lindeman, Emily Wisser

Napoleon Translations

Bulletin Suivant and Ministère de la Guerre were both written in 1815, during the era of the Napoleonic Wars. Bulletin Suivant is an article written by a reporter, which recounts the events that took place during the battle of Waterloo. It also contains an excerpt from the Journal de Paris that details the progress of the British and Prussian armies, headed by the Duke of Wellington and Prince Blücher, respectively, between June 27th and 29th. The second document, Ministère de la Guerre, relates to the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo. Because Napoleon’s army met defeat, the …

Experiences, Attitudes And Barriers Towards Research Amongst Junior Faculty Of Pakistani Medical Universities, Saniya Sabzwari, Samreen Kauser, Ali Khan Khuwaja

Department of Family Medicine

Background: The developing world has had limited quality research and in Pakistan, research is still in its infancy. We conducted a study to assess the proportion of junior faculty involved in research to highlight their attitude towards research, and identify the factors associated with their research involvement. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in four medical universities/teaching hospitals in Pakistan, representing private and public sectors. A pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information from 176 junior faculty members of studied universities/hospitals. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors related to attitudes and barriers in research among those currently …
