Archiving & Records Management Perspectives On Electronic-Only Publications For Nomenclature, Sue Ann Gardner Dec 2009

Archiving & Records Management Perspectives On Electronic-Only Publications For Nomenclature, Sue Ann Gardner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

I fully support the establishment of taxonomic names in electronic-only publications and would like to make some recommendations based on my professional experience in archival sciences, as a Scholarly Communications Librarian. The proposed amendment to the Code needs only to be explicit in what is required of authors and publishers for electronic-only publication, and all contingencies can be covered. In this generation we have one foot in the world of paper and the other now firmly planted in the electronic realm. This special position will be relatively short-lived, and we would be doing a great service to our successors if …

Bipolar Affective Disorder With Co-Morbid Substance Abuse In Relation To Criminal Offending, E.A. Sorketti

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

High rates of co-morbid alcohol and drug disorders have previously been found among individuals with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorders. Clinical and social outcomes have been reported to be worse in this group and service costs greater than in individuals with severe mental illness only. Men with schizophrenia who also had a record of substance misuse were over eight times more likely to appear among the violent offenders, and four times more likely to be convicted of homicide, than those without co morbid substance misuse. A similar pattern was found in affective disorders. The prevalence …

Giving End Of Life Care To Persons With Intellectual Disabilities: A Model Of Support For Community Based Caregivers, Emily K. Gress Dec 2009

Giving End Of Life Care To Persons With Intellectual Disabilities: A Model Of Support For Community Based Caregivers, Emily K. Gress

Theses and Graduate Projects

Persons with intellectual disabilities are living longer lives, often outliving family caregivers, and experiencing chronic illnesses known to the general aging population. Ultimately, this translates to a need for end of life care. Hospice care seeks to provide individualized physical, emotional, and spiritual support to assist persons and their families in attaining the highest quality of life in the face of a life limiting illness. Hospice services have been underutilized for persons with intellectual disabilities and little has been studied about end of life care provided by community based residential caregivers. The purpose of this project is to use Margaret …

Fuzzy Transforms Of Higher Order Approximate Derivatives: A Theorem, Irina Perfilieva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2009

Fuzzy Transforms Of Higher Order Approximate Derivatives: A Theorem, Irina Perfilieva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical applications, it is useful to represent a function f(x) by its fuzzy transform, i.e., by the "average" values over different elements of a fuzzy partition A1(x), ..., n(x) (for which Ai(x) >= 0 and A1(x) + ... + An(x) = 1). It is known that when we increase the number n of the partition elements Ai(x), the resulting approximation get closer and closer to the original function: for each value x0, the values Fi corresponding to the function Ai(x) for …

Leveling The Field--Ensuring Equity Through National Health Care Reform, Bruce Siegel, Lea Nolan Dec 2009

Leveling The Field--Ensuring Equity Through National Health Care Reform, Bruce Siegel, Lea Nolan

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Members of minority groups have higher rates of disease, poorer health, and more limited access to care than their white counterparts. They account for half of the uninsured population and 58% of the low-income uninsured population. Even when they have coverage, minority patients are at risk for receiving lower-quality medical and surgical care than white patients. The factors underlying these inequities are complex and go far beyond the health care system, but any meaningful reform must, at a minimum, confront disparities in care. Health care reform provides a unique opportunity to reversea legacy of inequality in health and health care. This …

How Important Is Patient Privacy? A Reflection, Salima Farooq, Yasmin Parpio, Tazeen Saeed Ali Dec 2009

How Important Is Patient Privacy? A Reflection, Salima Farooq, Yasmin Parpio, Tazeen Saeed Ali

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Privacy is a basic human right; however, a patient's right to privacy is often violated because health care providers do not fulfill their ethical and professional responsibilities. There is an immediate need to preserve patients' privacy by health care professionals; a standardized policy on patients' privacy is important. This paper aims to analyze the significance of patents' privacy in health care. A case scenario of a pregnant woman from an antenatal setting has been integrated to support the concept of privacy in promoting and advocating patients' right.

The 2008-2009 expansion of the Recreation Center at Cal Poly includes three new rooms with cardiovascular fitness equipment. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, the new machines connect to the main power grid and generate power during a workout. This document explains the process of quantifying and expressing the power generated using two interfaces: an autonomous display designed for a television with a text size and amount of detail adaptable to multiple television sizes and viewing distances, and an interactive, more detailed Web interface accessible with any Java-capable computer system or browser.
