The Influences Of Cell Type And Zno Nanoparticle Size On Immune Cell Cytotoxicity And Cytokine Induction, Cory Hanley, Aaron Thurber, Charles Hanna, Alex Punnoose, Jianhui Zhang, Denise G. Wingett

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nanotechnology represents a new and enabling platform that promises to provide a range of innovative technologies for biological applications. ZnO nanoparticles of controlled size were synthesized, and their cytotoxicity towards different human immune cells evaluated. A differential cytotoxic response between human immune cell subsets was observed, with lymphocytes being the most resistant and monocytes being the most susceptible to ZnO nanoparticle-induced toxicity. Significant differences were also observed between previously activated memory lymphocytes and naive lymphocytes, indicating a relationship between cell-cycle potential and nanoparticle susceptibility. Mechanisms of toxicity involve the generation of reactive oxygen species, with monocytes displaying the highest levels, …

Seeing The Forest Through The Trees: A Review Of Gibson And Brown’S Working With Qualitative Data, Jacquelyn Browne Sep 2009

Seeing The Forest Through The Trees: A Review Of Gibson And Brown’S Working With Qualitative Data, Jacquelyn Browne

The Qualitative Report

In their 2008 book, Working with Qualitative Data, Gibson and Brown introduce their readers to the notion that qualitative data analysis is more of an on-going process integral to the overall qualitative research process than a set of techniques or tools. In making this assertion, the authors help their audience connect analysis with theory, design, and final qualitative research report

Women Bound To Be Active: One Year Follow-Up To An Innovative Pilot Intervention To Increase Physical Activity And Self-Worth In Women, Jennifer L. Huberty, Jamie Vener, Laura Schulte, Sara M. Roberts, Beth Stevens, Lynda Ransdell

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention (a women’s book club; Women Bound to be Active) in promoting long-term physical activity (PA). Thirty-five women (26-70 years; mean age 50.6 years) completed the 8-month intervention and participated in the one-year follow-up. At follow-up, PA returned to baseline levels; however, self-worth and body mass index significantly improved. Women were more knowledgeable about PA at follow-up; however, they failed to maintain PA after the intervention. Components of the intervention were effective in improving self-worth and lowering BMI at one-year follow-up. To enhance long-term PA adherence continued …

Understanding Work-To-Family Conflict: The Role Of Organization And Supervisor Support For Work-Life Issues, Melissa A. Warner, Peter A. Hausdorf Sep 2009

Understanding Work-To-Family Conflict: The Role Of Organization And Supervisor Support For Work-Life Issues, Melissa A. Warner, Peter A. Hausdorf

Organization Management Journal

This study examined organization and supervisor support for work-life issues in the reduction of work-to-family conflict and its subsequent outcomes. Specifically, these sources of support were explored as antecedents, mediators and moderators in relation to work-to-family conflict and satisfaction. Observed variable path analysis was used with a sample of 207 health care workers to determine the specific relationship between organization and supervisor support for work-life issues, perceived work overload, job control, work-tofamily conflict and satisfaction outcomes. Overall, results supported a complex relationship between organization and supervisor support for work-life issues and work-to-family conflict, which reflected both direct and partially mediated …

Research Brief No. 1 - Social Inclusion Of The Oldest-Old: Toward Supportive Housing Policies, Judy Lynn Richards, Susan Sverdrup-Phillips, Jiangqin Du, Heather Maddocks, Heather Spiegel, Jennifer Brooks

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Research/Policy Brief

Although most seniors aged 85+ live relatively independently in the community, research on this age group tends to focus on the negative aspects of aging. This study looks instead at seniors aged 85 and older who are living well and semi-independently in their communities with the help of an informal care provider. The study aims to identify the mechanisms that allow them to live with dignity and autonomy in their own homes and remain socially included in their communities. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 16 individuals aged 85 to 94 years and their primary informal support-persons in Southwestern Ontario, …

Intergeneration Perception Toward Happiness In Elderly Life, Yue, Natale Cheung, Chi Wai, Jackie Chan Sep 2009

Intergeneration Perception Toward Happiness In Elderly Life, Yue, Natale Cheung, Chi Wai, Jackie Chan

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

According to the latest statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department, the Hong Kong population aged 65 and over was 829,300 at the end of 2004. The number of persons aged 65 or older is projected to increase by 17.9% to 978,000, representing 13.2% of population in 2013. This increase in the number and proportion of elderly will intensify the challenges of ageing, which will put further pressure on the government and the society at large. In response to Hong Kong's rapid aging population and in line with the concept of active and successful ageing, the question of how …

Consequences Of Recruitmentdecisions And Heterogeneity On Age-Specific Breeding Success In A Long-Lived Seabird, Lise M. Aubry, David N. Koons, Jean Yves Monnat, Emmanuelle Cam Sep 2009

Consequences Of Recruitmentdecisions And Heterogeneity On Age-Specific Breeding Success In A Long-Lived Seabird, Lise M. Aubry, David N. Koons, Jean Yves Monnat, Emmanuelle Cam

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

An individual’s age at first reproduction and investment in successive reproductive attempts are involved in mechanisms that can impede somatic repair, resulting in a decline in reproductive abilities with age (reproductive senescence). We used long-term data from the Black-legged Kittiwake, a long-lived seabird, to address the relationship between recruitment age, age-specific breeding success (BS), and reproductive senescence, while accounting for breeding experience and temporal variation in BS. We first detected late-life improvement in BS across all recruitment groups, which we recognized as ‘‘within-generation selection’’ or the selective disappearance of ‘‘frail’’ phenotypes. When such heterogeneity was accurately accounted for, we showed …

Protecting The Mature Mind, Julie O'Connor

New Science

One of the major unsolved mysteries of aging two hormones thought to influence the brain’s MRI scanner reveal that older participants had is why some people age gracefully with little to no memory or cognitive dysfunction, while others are afflicted with debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. An adult brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells – neurons - that branch out and connect to more than 100 trillion points. Signals traveling through the neurons form the basis of thoughts, feelings and memories. It is these cells that are destroyed by Alzheimer’s disease, leading to tissue …

Body, World And Affordance: Towards Engaging Technological Artefacts For Older Individuals, John Vines Aug 2009

Body, World And Affordance: Towards Engaging Technological Artefacts For Older Individuals, John Vines

Nordes Conference Series

This article addresses the problems older individuals have been observed to encounter when engaging with technological artefacts and how such difficulties may relate to the designers understanding of the normal cognitive ageing process of human beings. This article suggests that these problems may not be the result of limited cognitive abilities of certain older individuals but rather the manner in which designers understand the complex relationship between the mind and actions in the world. The article speculates that an alternative perspective on interactions as affordances that occur between the embodied individual and their ecology may benefit design methodologies deployed in …
