Pilot Community-Based Intervention To Address The Needs Of Elderly Caregivers In The Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, Priscilla Reddy, Shegs James, H. Mutumba Bilay-Boon, Eka Esu-Williams, Hena Khan

HIV and AIDS

The HIV epidemic in South Africa has placed a substantial burden on elderly caregivers, mainly women, who are often tasked with caring for their grandchildren who are orphaned and rendered vulnerable by the death or illness of their parents. The Medical Research Council (MRC), Age-in-Action, and the Horizons Program conducted formative research, as described in this research summary, to assess the needs of elderly caregivers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in 2005. The investigations revealed that elderly caregivers faced a number of challenges including difficulty communicating with youth, fears and a sense of hopelessness around matters regarding …

Engagement In Active Learning With Brazilian Adult Educators, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

Partners of the Americas was inspired by President John F. Kennedy, who in 1963 launched the Alliance for Progress, a program of government-to-government economic cooperation across the Western Hemisphere. At the same time, Kennedy also called for a parallel people-to-people initiative, one that would allow private citizens to work together for the good of the Americas. Today, it is a private, nonprofit, and nonpartisan organization, enjoying the support of many individuals, international corporations, and foundations. Every US president since Kennedy has endorsed the Partners' program, as have government leaders throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. There are 60 'partnerships' that …

Identifying Pre-Retirees For Bridge Employment: Factors That Influence Post-Retirement Employment Decisions, Sharon Kendrick, Melody L. Wollan Jan 2009

Identifying Pre-Retirees For Bridge Employment: Factors That Influence Post-Retirement Employment Decisions, Sharon Kendrick, Melody L. Wollan

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

In a field study of 387 pre-retirees, four factors are demonstrated to be important as tools to aid Human Resource Managers and managers in predicting and influencing employees to consider participation in bridge employment: education levels of pre-retirees, training opportunities offered, role support from others (of particular importance supervisors and coworkers), and work family balance issues. Additionally, our findings draw attention to the importance of employment status (part-time versus full-time) and the number of years to retirement in predicting pre-retirees’ intentions to work in bridge employment.

Disparities In Adl And Iadl Disabilities Among Elders Of Hispanic Subgroups In The United States: Results From The National Health Interview Survey 2001-2003, Alberto Coustasse, Sejong Bae, Cody Arvidson, Karan P. Singh, Fernando Trevino Jan 2009

Disparities In Adl And Iadl Disabilities Among Elders Of Hispanic Subgroups In The United States: Results From The National Health Interview Survey 2001-2003, Alberto Coustasse, Sejong Bae, Cody Arvidson, Karan P. Singh, Fernando Trevino

Management Faculty Research

The authors compared disability and functional limitation among elder Hispanic subgroups by using data from the 2001-2003 National Health Interview Survey (National Center for Health Statistics 2008a). The authors applied chi-square analysis for bivariate comparisons and used multiple logistic regression analyses for making comparisons, estimating odds ratios, and predicting disabilities. Results revealed a 21.4% rate of disability of any type in Hispanics. Puerto Ricans reported the highest rates of Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) disabilities compared with other Hispanic subgroups (Mexicans, Cubans, Central and South Americans) and reported a higher rate than did …

Disparities In Disability Among Non-Hispanic Black Elders: Results From The National Interview Survey 2001–2003, Alberto Coustasse, Dennis Emmett, Nimisha Patel, Alicia Pekar

Management Faculty Research

A drastically increasing elderly population and disparity among disability poses a concern for the US health care industry. This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed whether ADL and IADL disabilities were different among non-Hispanic white (NHW) and non-Hispanic black (NHB) populations age 65 and over. Data was retrieved from the 2001–2003 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) for comparing NHBs and NHWs using chi-square analysis for bivariate comparisons. For both elderly NHBs and elderly NHWs, increased rates of disability were reported for being over 75, female, single, and having lower education. NHBs reported statistically higher disability rates for ADL, IADL, and for any …

Dense Connective Tissue Repair : The Intricacies Of Monitoring Actin Isoforms In Native Tissue Models In Vitro, Eran C. Gwillim Jan 2009

Dense Connective Tissue Repair : The Intricacies Of Monitoring Actin Isoforms In Native Tissue Models In Vitro, Eran C. Gwillim

Honors Capstones

In preparation to quantify beta-actin and alpha-smooth muscle actin content in loaded and unloaded native rat tail tendon organ culture models, several methodologies were developed in the present paper. Since alpha-smooth muscle actin has not been monitored in tendon in vitro, developing the methods to culture and quantitatively detect alpha-smooth muscle actin, the protein marker for fibroblast to myofibroblast transition were developed. In addition, quantifying the amount of alpha-smooth muscle actin mRNA, using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays was investigated and novel oligonucleotide primers were developed. A method to identify four highly conserved actin isoforms; beta cytoplasmic, gamma …

Defining Family: Naming, Orientation, And Redemption In The Case Of Terri Schiavo, M. Chad Mcbride, Karen L. Daas, Paige W. Toller Jan 2009

Defining Family: Naming, Orientation, And Redemption In The Case Of Terri Schiavo, M. Chad Mcbride, Karen L. Daas, Paige W. Toller

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper undertakes a detailed analysis of the Terri Schiavo case as it was covered in popular media. Drawing on Burkean theory, we argue a critical issue in the case was a struggle between Terri's parents and husband to be seen as the more legitimate family in order to determine the duration and extent of Terri's medical care. We discuss how the private debate over Terri's health and the decision to remove her feeding tube entered into the public scenes of legal and political action. This shift to the public scene represented problems for the parties directly involved in the …

Walking With Grandma Through Cancer And Caregiving, Mindi Ann Golden Jan 2009

Walking With Grandma Through Cancer And Caregiving, Mindi Ann Golden

Iowa Journal of Communication

This autoethnographic account employs Continuity Theory to examine my experience caregiving for my grandmother in the last year of her life. Little is known about grandchildren as caregivers. I use the routine of walking at the beach with my grandmother to frame my caregiving journey. Our walks implicitly reflect a desire and drive for continuity in the context of profound change. I explicitly discuss internal and external continuity across various contexts and situations throughout my year as a caregiver.

Identity Distress Surrounding Retirement, Jennifer Colbert Jan 2009

Identity Distress Surrounding Retirement, Jennifer Colbert

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine identity distress surrounding retirement. From past literature I hypothesized that individuals would experience more psychological distress after retirement compared to before and those who earned a professional degree would experience more distress than others. I also hypothesized the longer time retired the less distress, and those who were forced to retire would experience more distress after retirement than those who retired voluntarily. Results of the study conducted with 40 retired people in the United States revealed only one significant result. Those who were forced to retire showed increased levels of identity distress …

Student Stress And Academic Performance: Home Hospital Program, Carolyn B. Yucha, Susan Kowalski, Chad L. Cross Jan 2009

Student Stress And Academic Performance: Home Hospital Program, Carolyn B. Yucha, Susan Kowalski, Chad L. Cross

Nursing Faculty Research

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether nursing students assigned to a home hospital experience less stress and improved academic performance. Students were assigned to a home hospital clinical placement (n = 78) or a control clinical placement (n = 79). Stress was measured using the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI) and Spielberger’s State Anxiety Inventory. Academic performance included score on the RN CAT, a standardized mock NCLEX-RN®-type test; nursing grade point average; and first attempt pass-fail on the NCLEX-RN. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, or score …

Character Strengths And Health, Jaejoon Song

Open Access Master's Theses

The purposes of this study were (a) to examine the relationship between character strengths and physical health and (b) to examine the moderating role of character strengths in the relationship between income and physical health. This study used nationally representative data from a sample of German adults (N > 1000) which included information about demographics, socioeconomic status, physical health, and character strengths. Physical health was assessed in two ways: doctor-diagnosed diseases and self-diagnosed chronic illnesses. Results showed that the character strengths of hope and zest were related to fewer doctor-diagnosed diseases and lower levels of self-diagnosed chronic illness. The character strengths …
