Giving Adult Learners A Voice After The Inquest: A Review Of A Mixed Method Approach To Educational Research, Ann Conway

Other resources

This paper highlights the necessary application of mixed methods in educational research within the field of adult learners and lifelong learning in higher education to provide adult learners with a “voice”. The paper will introduce the reader to educational research through focusing on mixed methods and the theoretical frameworks within. Critical hermeneutic epistemology or transformative research (as espoused by Freire and Habermas in critical realism cited in Morrow and Torres, (2002)), social constructivism within phenomenology (see Vygotsky’s (1934) and Bruner (1996) work cited in Carlile and Jordan, 2005: 21-22) and pragmatism within the critical realism school (The Chicago School of …

Finding A Lost Pension, Pension Action Center, Gerontology Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation

Pension Action Center Publications

Workers may be tempted to shrug their shoulders and write off the pensions as “lost.” Indeed, some pensions may in fact be gone forever. In many cases, though, the pension money is sitting safely in a fund, waiting only for the worker (or a surviving spouse or beneficiary) to come forward to collect it. If you think you may be entitled to money in a pension fund, either as a participant or as a spouse or beneficiary of a participant, it makes sense to try to track it down. This booklet, which is based on the experience of pension counselors, …

Age And Marital Satisfaction In Couples With Cancer, Elizabeth Day

CFS Honors Program Undergraduate Theses

This study was a secondary analysis of seventy-seven couples dealing with breast cancer and examined the relationship between age and marital satisfaction. The couples’ marital satisfaction was measured using the Satisfaction and Cohesion Subscales of the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale. In analyzing age and marital satisfaction, husbands and wives were evaluated individually, using their age at the time of their entrance into the study. A correlation analysis was used to determine any significance between age and marital satisfaction. Then, a multiple regression with age stratified into high and low was used with an interaction term of age X perceived criticism …

Gender And Friendship Norms Among Older Adults, Diane Felmlee, Anna M. Muraco May 2009

Gender And Friendship Norms Among Older Adults, Diane Felmlee, Anna M. Muraco

Sociology Faculty Works

The authors examined same- and cross-gender friendship norms in a sample of 135 adults (average age 73 years). Participants evaluated a friend’s behavior, quantitatively and qualitatively, in vignettes in which the friend’s gender was experimentally manipulated. Gender often significantly, though modestly, influenced normative evaluations. Women frequently had higher expectations of friends than men and placed a greater emphasis on intimacy. Women were more disapproving of violations of friendship rules, such as betraying a confidence, paying a surprise visit, and failing to stand up for a friend in public. However, both men and women were less approving of a man than …

Journal of International Women's Studies

Workplace environment monitoring showed exposure to hazards such as noise, chemicals, poor ventilation, and poor illumination. The most prevalent illnesses and health problems were headache and coughs and colds. Results of focus group discussions showed adverse work conditions, hazard exposures among women workers, …

Depression Among The Elderly: Screening Practices And Attitudes Among Nurse Practitioners, Grace Le

Master's Projects

Purpose: To examine California's nurse practitioners' (NPs) screening practices and attitudes towards depression among the elderly using the Depression Attitude Questionnaire (DAQ) (Botega, Mann, Blizard, & Wilkinson, 1992). Data sources: One hundred and fifty NPs, selected randomly from the membership of the California Association of Nurse Practitioners (CANP), were surveyed with electronic mailed questionnaires. Seventy-five (50%) self-reported surveys were completed and analyzed. Results: The majority of NPs routinely screened for depression among the elderly. Consumer Preferences: The Role Of Food Emotions In Food Choice, Jessica Glass May 2009

Consumer Preferences: The Role Of Food Emotions In Food Choice, Jessica Glass

All Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the driving factors in food choice. The Flavor Pyramid, introduced by Steven Kaun, indicates that the foundation of consumer food choice is emotional (Kaun, 2005). This study serves as a preliminary means to validate the role of the emotional component of food choice in today's market. Four gingerbread formulas, one from 1430, 1861, 2004, and a new product, were evaluated in a sensory panel in order to collect preliminary data on the role that food emotions play in consumer preference. Nearly sixty-six percent of all panelists chose the 2004 recipe as the …

Evidence And Ideology In Assessing The Effectiveness Of Financial Literacy Education, Lauren E. Willis May 2009

Evidence And Ideology In Assessing The Effectiveness Of Financial Literacy Education, Lauren E. Willis

San Diego Law Review

Financial literacy education has long been promoted as key to consumer financial well-being. It is widely embraced as an effective alternative to substantive legal regulation. Yet its effectiveness has never had more than negligible empirical support. This review (1) sets forth the model of financial literacy education subscribed to by policymakers today, (2) identifies pervasive and serious limitations in existing empirical research used by policymakers as evidence of the effectiveness of this education, and (3) recommends a number of alternative public policies suggested by the existing research. Researchers should be particularly cautious in the presentation of their findings, so that …

Leadership Approaches To Providing Quality Hiv Prevention Care For Older Adults Apr 2009

Leadership Approaches To Providing Quality Hiv Prevention Care For Older Adults

Florida Public Health Review

Americans continue to face risks associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). One population that receives little attention concerning HIV is that of older adults. Approximately 20% of all HIV cases are among adults aged 50 and older. Older adults and younger populations are at risk for HIV; however, few programs are in place to reduce the incidence of HIV among this priority population. Many cases of HIV among older adults go unnoticed because health care professionals perceive older adults as asexual. Many physicians and other health professionals, including health educators, are uncomfortable in discussing sexual histories with older adults, so …

The Elderly: A Descriptive Study Of The Perceptions Of The Elderly And Their Driving Abilities, Kimberly Pine

Social Work Theses

This study advances the understanding of older driver’s perceptions on their driving abilities. It focuses on examining a deeper and more detailed understanding of the different challenges the elderly are experiencing, in respect to driving and retention of their license. Additionally, it is important for others (such as family, doctors, social workers etc.) to interact with the elderly and assist them in receiving services if they are no longer capable of driving a vehicle, as well as talk with them if they are struggling with giving up their license and consequently their independence. Specifically, the analysis focuses on which gender …

Coordinating Care For People With Multiple Chronic Conditions: The Guided Care Model And Other Innovative Approaches, Judith D. Moore, Carol O'Shaughnessy

National Health Policy Forum

The Forum sponsored two site visits to explore the Johns Hopkins University's research and demonstration program on Guided Care, in April and August 2009. Guided Care is a patient-centered medical home model that uses an interdisciplinary approach to coordinating health care for older people with multiple chronic conditions. Guided Care nurses located in primary care practices work with Medicare patients on a long-term basis, coordinate their care among various providers, provide transitional care, and assist patients with self-management skills. Site visit participants learned about the complexities of caring for frail Medicare patients, some of whom see multiple physicians and other …
