Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke Dec 2009

Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke

Theses and Dissertations

A memoir written in vignettes shows how the writer's childhood, family, and faith connect the past with the present. In searching for words to express memory, the writing uncovers and discovers what needs to be said. The selected narratives attest to events and influences that reveal the ever hovering shadow of the past as I see it. Through the clouds of memory, the stories mold themselves until they become the truth, a portrait of the author's self identity as daughter, mother, wife, Christian, and storyteller.

Susette La Flesche: Indian Rights And Rural Activism In 19th Century America, Amanda L. Paige Dec 2009

Susette La Flesche: Indian Rights And Rural Activism In 19th Century America, Amanda L. Paige

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the life of Susette La Flesche, a 19th century Omaha woman. La Flesche challenged views Anglo Americans held of American Indians as she spoke out against failed U.S. government policy towards the American Indians. A champion for allotment, Susette was one of the few to realize its potential shortcomings. She continued her pursuit for American Indian equality throughout her life but found agrarian reform equally important and rewarding. Writing was important to Susette from her letters to friends in the east, her speeches, short stories, and newspaper articles she wrote in her relatively brief lifetime. It …

Warning Based Browser Extension To Protect User Data Against Phishing Attacks, Sree Rama Konduri Dec 2009

Warning Based Browser Extension To Protect User Data Against Phishing Attacks, Sree Rama Konduri

Theses and Dissertations

There are currently many anti-phishing tools to combat against the phishing and web scams. Many of which are browser extensions that warn users when they are using suspected phishing websites. But most of the users are ignoring the warnings of the phishing site and providing their valuable credentials. Therefore, the focus of this research is to develop a browser extension, which manipulates the user credentials, whenever a user ignores anti-phishing tools warnings about malicious websites. This browser extension will protect user's information from being handed to attackers.

Creation Of Soil Liquefaction Susceptibility Maps For San Luis Obispo & Marin Counties Using Geographic Information Systems., Amelia M. Lowman Dec 2009

Creation Of Soil Liquefaction Susceptibility Maps For San Luis Obispo & Marin Counties Using Geographic Information Systems., Amelia M. Lowman

Earth and Soil Sciences

Liquefaction of soils in response to earthquake shaking is a pressing issue in the state of California. Using Geographic Information Systems, Geological and lithology layers, along with criteria in order to separate out the data into four risk categories, a liquefaction risk assessment map was created for San Luis Obispo and Marin Counties. The accuracy of these maps was then assessed using liquefaction occurrences for San Luis Obispo County, and it was determined that while the map is somewhat accurate, in order to obtain a greater amount of accuracy and increase the usefulness of these maps, more data would need …

For The Greater Good: Developing A Visual And Performing Arts Center, William Floyd Childers

Graduate Theses

The process, procedures and issues involved in the development of a visual and performing arts center were examined and explored by a group of graduate students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Arts Administration program at Winthrop University. Using their knowledge gained from their undergraduate studies, personal experiences, research and the graduate program itself, they produced a collective work entitled "Handbook of William's Farm." It is the "heart" of how collaboration can make a vision into reality. This handbook that made William's Farm a reality and the accompanying material can serve as a guide to anyone considering or involved …

Analyzing A Multidisciplinary Research Field, Aschwin Wijnsma Dec 2009

Analyzing A Multidisciplinary Research Field, Aschwin Wijnsma

Research Trends

The analysis of multidisciplinary research can be very difficult, in large part due to the fact that scientific terminology is often shared with the traditional fields it draws together. In a multidisciplinary field, such as energy, keywords can be ambiguous. Research Trends explores a delineation based on subject categorization to measure country specialization and collaboration against impact.

Like Oil And Water Or Chocolate And Peanut Butter? Ethnic Diversity And Social Participation Of Young People In England, Elena Fumagalli, Laura Fumagalli Dec 2009

Like Oil And Water Or Chocolate And Peanut Butter? Ethnic Diversity And Social Participation Of Young People In England, Elena Fumagalli, Laura Fumagalli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper studies the impact of ethnic diversity on social participation of young people. We first propose a theoretical model in which the agents choose between structured and unstructured social activities by taking into account the ethnic composition of the groups they join. We test our predictions using English census data together with the `Longitudinal Survey of Young People in England' (LSYPE) and we find that ethnic segregation increases the probability of hanging around near home, while ethnic fractionalization decreases it. Furthermore, more structured activities are not affected by ethnic fractionalization. Finally, we use an IV strategy based on both …

The Impact Of Third Places On Community Quality Of Life, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Cheryl Campanella Bracken, Guowei Jian, Mary F. Casey Dec 2009

The Impact Of Third Places On Community Quality Of Life, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Cheryl Campanella Bracken, Guowei Jian, Mary F. Casey

Communication Faculty Publications

Older cities struggling with issues of survival focus on jobs and the economy, but competition requires all cities to pay attention to the quality of life that attracts residents. Creating such an inviting environment includes “third places” that foster community and communication among people outside of home and work, yet we have little empirical evidence that speaks to the subject, or their importance for a community’s quality of life. Here we report on a national U.S. survey that asked people to identify such places in their community, producing a wide variety of “third places” that ranged from the most popular …

Phylogeography And Postglacial Dispersal Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) Into The Great Lakes, W. Calvin Borden, Robert A. Krebs Dec 2009

Phylogeography And Postglacial Dispersal Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) Into The Great Lakes, W. Calvin Borden, Robert A. Krebs

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Refugia and dispersal routes of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) into the Great Lakes were identified using 427 mitochondrial sequences from across their native range. Overall, smallmouth bass accessed the Great Lakes via long-distance dispersal from multiple refugia, and the distribution of genetic variation reflected the consequences of vicariant, dispersal, and paleogeological events. Proximity of lakes to glacial outlets had a greater predictive power on the resulting distribution of mitochondrial diversity relative to interbasin migration. Populations in the Eastern and Interior Highlands contained the most divergent and oldest haplotypes, reflecting their role as glacial refugia and subsequent high incidence of endemicity. …

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy Dec 2009

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy

Sociology

Abstract

Arctic demography has previously been reviewed on a large scale, across the circumpolar nations. We look instead at some recent population dynamics on sub-regional to community scales, focusing on Arctic Alaska. Detailed graphics depicting yearly population changes from 1990 to 2006 in 43 selected Arctic Alaska towns and villages and all 27 of the state's "county-equivalent entities" (e.g., boroughs) have been published online in connection with two International Polar Year projects. Seemingly comparable places within the same borough have taken widely divergent paths. Birth rates generally exceed death rates, although both are high. Year-to-year and place-to-place variations are dominated …

Classification Of Urban Features Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Bharath Ganesh Babu Dec 2009

Classification Of Urban Features Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Bharath Ganesh Babu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate mapping and modeling of urban environments are critical for their efficient and successful management. Superior understanding of complex urban environments is made possible by using modern geospatial technologies. This research focuses on thematic classification of urban land use and land cover (LULC) using 248 bands of 2.0 meter resolution hyperspectral data acquired from an airborne imaging spectrometer (AISA+) on 24th July 2006 in and near Terre Haute, Indiana. Three distinct study areas including two commercial classes, two residential classes, and two urban parks/recreational classes were selected for classification and analysis. Four commonly used classification methods – maximum likelihood (ML), …

Imperfections In The Economics Of Public Policy, Imperfections In Markets, And Climate Change, Nicholas Stern Dec 2009

Imperfections In The Economics Of Public Policy, Imperfections In Markets, And Climate Change, Nicholas Stern

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the last twenty years economics has created much of lasting value and real potential: it has been a very fertile period. But economics has also suffered from what I shall term „collective amnesia‟ covering whole areas of public policy. And on policy and the role of government it has, embarrassingly in my view, swayed with the political winds to the detriment of both our profession and to outcomes. Both the amnesia and the political bending have contributed to the economic crisis of the last year or two and to hostility towards the profession. My purpose here is first to …

Using Conservative And Biological Tracers To Better Understand The Transport Of Agricultural Contaminants From Soil Water Through The Epikarstic Zone, Brian Ham Dec 2009

Using Conservative And Biological Tracers To Better Understand The Transport Of Agricultural Contaminants From Soil Water Through The Epikarstic Zone, Brian Ham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Agriculture contamination is very common in karst systems due to the vulnerability of these aquifers. Animal waste is often spread across crop land to enrich the soil with nitrates and phosphates. Herbicides and pesticides are also applied to the crops. The transport of these pollutants through the soil and epikarst is a difficult process to monitor due to the complex, heterogeneous behavior of the groundwater as it makes its way down to the aquifer below.

An experimental site at Crumps Cave lended a unique opportunity to monitor the vadose zone at a waterfall in the cave below. A previous dye …

The Flames Of Namugongo: Issues Around Theological Narrativity, Heteronormativity, Globalization, And Aids In Africa, Ken Hamilton S.V.D Dec 2009

The Flames Of Namugongo: Issues Around Theological Narrativity, Heteronormativity, Globalization, And Aids In Africa, Ken Hamilton S.V.D

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Hamilton’s paper, delivered during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, uses the hagiography of Charles Lwanga and the Martyrs of Uganda to reveal an unrelenting problem of the Church – the ways in which the assumptions of heternormativity and sodomitical discourse drown out the voices of those who do not fall into heteronormative sexual and/or gendered identities, and lead to the open persecution, imprisonment, and torture of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons in Uganda, and in fact all over Africa. Casting those with ‘othered’ sexual identities as evil, or even simply turning a deaf ear to the persecution faced …

Summary Brief: Unl Libraries 2003/04 – 2007/08 Acquisitions: Performance Of Non-Serial Volumes Available For Checkout, David C. Tyler

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: White Papers

The activity of the included five years’ worth of receipts was analyzed for both degree of idleness and extent of use. Analyses were conducted upon the collection of receipts as a whole and upon the collection disaggregated into broad subject categories and into Library of Congress (LC) subclasses. When reading the report to follow, one should keep in mind that statistics may sometimes mask as much as they reveal, especially when one is dealing with non-discrete category data. For example, several LC subclasses (e.g., HC = Economic Theory and Demography) cover multiple topical areas, so analysis at the LC …
