Tamarisk (Tamarix spp., saltcedar) is a well-known invasive phreatophyte introduced from Asia to North America in the 1800s. This report compares the efficacy of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM5), QuickBird (QB) and EO-1 Hyperion data in discriminating tamarisk populations near De Beque, Colorado, USA. As a result of highly correlated reflectance among the spectral bands provided by each sensor, relatively standard image analysis methods were employed. Multispectral data at high spatial resolution (QB, 2.5 m Ground Spatial Distance or GSD) proved more effective in tamarisk delineation than either multispectral (TM5) or hyperspectral (Hyperion) data at moderate spatial resolution (30 m …

What Democracy For Afghanistan? An Analysis Utilizing Established Norms And Five Non-Western Case Studies, Charles L. Barry, Samuel R. Greene

Defense and Technology Papers

This paper looks at democratic governance and what might be expected to take root in a society such as Afghanistan, shedding light on what is necessary, as a minimum, for democracy to become established. Suggesting replacements for goals that may be simply unattainable, such as an Afghan democracy held to an unrealistic Jeffersonian standard, it aims to impart a sense of what can be accomplished before international political will expires.

Creating And Sustaining Successful Mixed-Income Communities: Conceptualizing The Role Of Schools, Mark L. Joseph, Jessica Feldman Sep 2009

Creating And Sustaining Successful Mixed-Income Communities: Conceptualizing The Role Of Schools, Mark L. Joseph, Jessica Feldman

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the theory and evidence behind the increased policy and scholarly interest in the role that schools might play in promoting neighborhood revitalization, focuses on the extent to which schools might be a key component in the growing efforts across the country to address urban poverty by creating and sustaining mixed-income neighborhoods, identifies five channels through which investment in high-quality public schools might help facilitate the types of neighborhood- and individual-level outcomes sought through mixed-income development, explores the theoretical arguments behind these pathways, and draws on research to assess the potential value of each. The article concludes that …

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Both the digital and real societies produced by Blizzard's Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, have received a lot of attention in the relatively new field of game studies. Due to its phenomenal size and cultural significance, the interest World of Warcraft draws is justifiable. The book, Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader attempts to dissect the gaming industry's largest MMORPG through a compilation of work consisting of thirteen separate analyses, representing a wide variety of scholars trained with different analytical toolsets. This format was deliberately chosen by the editors, Hilde G. …

Why Has Growth Slowed In Sub-Saharan Africa? A System Iv-Gmm Approach., H. Mahmud Sep 2009

Why Has Growth Slowed In Sub-Saharan Africa? A System Iv-Gmm Approach., H. Mahmud

Economic and Financial Review

The paper estimated the traditional cross-country growth model and corrected for model endogeneity bias and country-specific heterogeneity effects. Using the System-IV Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) approach, it identified the key factors that determine GDP per capita growth rate in a panel regression model of I 00 countries. Parameter robustness test was applied to the models which also included: Within Fixed Effects; Pooled-Ordinary Least Square and Levels-IV GMM models, using the Extreme Bounds Analysis (EBA). It found that most of the estimated covariates that show significant coefficients in the regression model are actually fragile, except for initial income, institutions and …

Impact Of Ambient Air Pollution On Survival Of Renal Transplant Recipients, Rhonda Kristine Hwang Sep 2009

Impact Of Ambient Air Pollution On Survival Of Renal Transplant Recipients, Rhonda Kristine Hwang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There is increasing evidence that ambient air pollution is associated with coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. This research has focused on the general public and less so on possible sensitive subgroups even though these may have even greater susceptibility to adverse effects of ambient air pollution. With highly prevalent traditional as well as nontraditional risk factors, renal transplant recipients may potentially be a sensitive subgroup. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of between long-term exposure to air pollution on the risk of CHD mortality among renal transplant recipients. This cohort study includes 32,239 adult, …

Excess Hispanic Fetal-Infant Mortality In A Midwestern Community, Gerald L. Hoff, Jinwen Cai, Felix A. Okah, Paul C. Dew Sep 2009

Excess Hispanic Fetal-Infant Mortality In A Midwestern Community, Gerald L. Hoff, Jinwen Cai, Felix A. Okah, Paul C. Dew

Faculty and Staff Publications

Objective: We assessed excess fetal-infant mortality for Hispanic, non-Hispanic white, and non-Hispanic black populations in five contiguous counties of Missouri and Kansas.

Methods: We conducted a perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) assessment of fetal-infant mortality using electronic linked birth-death record files from 2001 through 2005. We generated an internal reference group in accordance with established PPOR protocol. We used Kitagawa analysis to determine whether excess deaths were due to birthweight distribution (a higher frequency of prematurity or growth retardation) or to higher mortality rates once born at that birthweight (birthweight-specific mortality).

Results: We found the excess fetal-infant death rates for …

The Geopolitics Of Amazônia In Souza's Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee Sep 2009

The Geopolitics Of Amazônia In Souza's Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Geopolitics of Amazônia in Souza's Fiction" Thomas O. Beebee examines the ways in which the historical fiction of Brazilian author Márcio Souza (1946-) confronts prevailing notions of Brazilianness conceived as the unity of citizens within a fixed territorial space. Souza undermines this notion by frequently using non-Brazilians as protagonists of his novels that have as their theme the struggle over control of territory "within" Brazil. Beebee reviews the role played by the concept of national territorial control in theories of nationalism and the modern state, including in the Brazilian school of geopolitics developed by Eduardo Backheuser …

An Interdisciplinary Consideration Of Marginality, Marybeth C. Stalp, Catherine Helen Palczewski Sep 2009

An Interdisciplinary Consideration Of Marginality, Marybeth C. Stalp, Catherine Helen Palczewski

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

As the university increases its commitment to interdisciplinary studies, it is imperative that we find productive models of interdisciplinarity in scholarly and creative activities, teaching, and institutional structures. This coauthored essay, written in the spirit of sharing work across disciplines, seeks to participate in the conversation about interdisciplinary scholarship.

Interdisciplinarity in scholarship can be discussed in two ways. First, interdisicplinarity can be enhanced by encouraging people to read across the disciplines. Second, it can be enhanced by encouraging scholarship that is interdisciplinary and multi-methodological. This essay speaks to both of these levels.

Trade Openness, Capital Mobility, And The Sacrifice Ratio, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose Sep 2009

Trade Openness, Capital Mobility, And The Sacrifice Ratio, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper develops and evaluates empirically the implications of a theoretical model of an open economy in which variations in both trade openness and capital mobility can influence the sacrifice ratio. Key predictions forthcoming from the model are that both forms of globalization can independently affect the sacrifice ratio, once the influences of the level of central bank independence and the degree of wage stickiness in nations’ economies are taken into account. Examination of cross-country data encompassing 58 disinflations for 16 countries yields evidence consistent with these essential predictions of the theoretical framework.

Can Socialization Influence Identification Levels? Formal And Informal Socialization Of Graduate Students And Graduate Assistants, Tanna White Sep 2009

Can Socialization Influence Identification Levels? Formal And Informal Socialization Of Graduate Students And Graduate Assistants, Tanna White

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Every organization has standard expectations for member behavior. Socialization ensures that employees learn the accepted ways of responding to each situation and the expected ways of working with others. Socialization may be formal, taking place during orientation meetings, training sessions, workshops, and with assigned mentors. Informal socialization, conversely, involves off-site meetings and social interactions as well as employees learning by watching their coworkers and supervisors (Cousins, Handfield, Lawson & Petersen, 2006; Mujtaba & Sims, 2006).

The War On Terrorism As State Of Exception: A Challenge For Transnational Gender Theory, Sarah Blake Sep 2009

The War On Terrorism As State Of Exception: A Challenge For Transnational Gender Theory, Sarah Blake

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this article, I explore the contributions of theoretical engagements of bare life and states of exception to gender theory in relation to the U.S.-led ‘war on terrorism,’ beginning in 2001. I discuss connections between the ongoing struggle over representations of the ‘Third World Woman,’ among feminists and the mainstream discourse that established the United States’ invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and imprisonment of an extralegal class of ‘detainees’ as an inevitable, natural consequence of exceptional difference. In addition I highlight the responsibility academics, including feminist academics, to consider their own positions in relation to the economic, political and representational …

Abuse Of Lower Castes In South India: The Institution Of Devadasi, Maria Costanza Torri Sep 2009

Abuse Of Lower Castes In South India: The Institution Of Devadasi, Maria Costanza Torri

Journal of International Women's Studies

The ‘devadasi’ system has been the object of several studies and is quite controversial. Some authors, particularly in the past associated the ‘devadasi’ with power and prestige, other, more lately, with degradation and prostitution. This article firstly explores the origin of ‘devadasi’ practice and its evolution over time as well as its religious and ritual meaning, while attempting to identify the main factors explaining the signification of the ‘devadasi’ system in the past. Secondly it analyses the social status and economic condition of ‘devadasis’ and draws a global view of the reasons why young girls are still today consecrated in …

Gender Standards V. Democratic Standards: Examples And Counter Examples, Amel Mili Sep 2009

Gender Standards V. Democratic Standards: Examples And Counter Examples, Amel Mili

Journal of International Women's Studies

Common wisdom, and development theory hold that gender standards and democratic standards go hand in hand, in the sense that countries that uphold high standards of gender equality are the same as countries that uphold high standards of democratic governance. Even though this principle appears intuitively appealing, it is disproved by empirical measures I have collected on the recent history of the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia). In this paper, I report on my empirical experiments and submit tentative justifications for their outcome.

A Study On The Empowerment Of Women Construction Workers As Masons In Tamil Nadu, India, Annette Barnabas, D. Joseph Anbarasu, Paul S. Clifford Sep 2009

A Study On The Empowerment Of Women Construction Workers As Masons In Tamil Nadu, India, Annette Barnabas, D. Joseph Anbarasu, Paul S. Clifford

Journal of International Women's Studies

The construction sector has the largest number of unorganised labourers in India next only to agricultural sector. Women form half the workforce and by choice or by design they are not allowed to acquire specific skills that may enable them to become masons. Women join as unskilled workers and remain unskilled till the end of their working life span. However, men get training and systematically upgrade their construction skills to graduate as masons, supervisors and contractors. A study was conducted on the career progress of 440 men construction workers and 440 women construction workers and 51 building contractors to find …

The Geography Of Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo Sep 2009

The Geography Of Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article analyzes the relationship between the risk-adjusted performance of hedge funds and their proximity to investments using data on Asia-focused hedge funds. I find, relative to an augmented Fung and Hsieh (2004) factor model, that hedge funds with a physical presence (head or research office) in their investment region outperform other hedge funds by 3.72% per year. The local information advantage is pervasive across all major geographical regions, but is strongest for emerging market funds and funds holding illiquid securities. These results are robust to adjustments for fund fees, serial correlation, backfill bias, and incubation bias. I show also …

Estimation Of Bidder Valuations In An Fcc Spectrum Auction, Jungwon Yeo Sep 2009

Estimation Of Bidder Valuations In An Fcc Spectrum Auction, Jungwon Yeo

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) uses auctions to allocate radio spectrum frequencies to wireless service providers. The innovation of the auction design is that it offers many heterogeneous licenses simultaneously in one ascending auction. This paper develops an empirical model and procedure to estimate bidder valuations. Given that the complex nature of the auction does not admit formal modeling in a general setting, I do not explore a particular model of equilibrium bidding. Instead, I propose two revealed preference inequalities which should hold in any reasonable model of these auctions. The .rst inequality requires that a bidder never bids on …
