Human Trafficking Legislation Across The States: The Determinants Of Comprehensiveness, Vanessa Bouche, Dana Wittmer Oct 2009

Human Trafficking Legislation Across The States: The Determinants Of Comprehensiveness, Vanessa Bouche, Dana Wittmer

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)

To date, 40 U.S. states have passed human trafficking legislation; however, the comprehensiveness and stringency of the legislation significantly varies from state to state, and there remains significant ambiguity as to why this is the case. This study examines a number of factors that may impact the comprehensiveness of human trafficking legislation at the state level, focusing on the gender makeup of the legislature, the partisan makeup of the legislature, and policy diffusion based on geographic proximity. To test these hypotheses, we develop a comprehensive data set, including a uniquely designed dependent variable measuring legislative comprehensiveness for each state. We …

Operatively White: Exploring The Significance Of Race And Class Through The Paradox Of Black Middle-Classness, Audrey Mcfarlane Oct 2009

Operatively White: Exploring The Significance Of Race And Class Through The Paradox Of Black Middle-Classness, Audrey Mcfarlane

All Faculty Scholarship

The black–white paradigm has been the crucial paradigm in racial geography of land use, housing and development. Yet it is worthwhile to consider that, in this context, distinctions based on race are accompanied by a powerful, racialized discourse of middle class versus poor. The black–white paradigm in exclusionary zoning, for example, involves the wealthy or middle-class white person (we need not even use the term white) protesting against or displacing the poor black person. (we also need not even use the term black). Another example of the racialized discourse of middle class versus poor is in the urban-gentrification context. The …

Violence In The House, Katherine Hite Oct 2009

Violence In The House, Katherine Hite

Human Rights & Human Welfare

There was something particularly haunting in reading this Kristof and WuDunn piece during the week’s major US headlines: a girl in California had been imprisoned for eighteen years in the home of a man who kidnapped and raped her, fathered her children, and employed her in his small enterprise—a business card design and printing agency. Business clients interviewed for the story appeared completely taken aback. Clients had always found the now twenty-nine-year-old Jaycee Dugard “professional, polite, and responsive” as well as “creative and talented in her work.” Others expressed similar shock, recounting that Ms. Dugard “was always smiling.” Ms. Dugard’s …

Long-Term Agricultural Land-Use Trends In Nebraska, 1866–2007, Tim L. Hiller, Larkin A. Powell, Tim D. Mccoy, Jeffrey J. Lusk

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Although landscape changes from anthropogenic causes occur at much faster rates than those from natural processes (e.g., geological, vegetation succession), human perception of such changes is often subjective, inaccurate, or nonexistent. Given the large-scale land-use changes that have occurred throughout the Great Plains, the potential impacts of land-use changes on ecological systems, and the insight gained from knowledge of land-use trends (e.g., to compare to wildlife population trends), we synthesized information related to land-use trends in Nebraska during 1866–2007. We discussed and interpreted known and potential causes of short- and long-term land-use trends based on agricultural and weather data; farm …

Book Review: Establishing Justice In Middle America: A History Of The United States Court Of Appeals For The Eighth Circuit By Jeffrey Brandon Morris, Mark R. Scherer Oct 2009

Book Review: Establishing Justice In Middle America: A History Of The United States Court Of Appeals For The Eighth Circuit By Jeffrey Brandon Morris, Mark R. Scherer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The United States Supreme Court accepts for review less than two percent of the cases presented to it on appeal. For the vast majority of litigants in the federal court system, therefore, the circuit courts of appeal are truly the “court of last resort,” and throughout American history those courts have had the final say on a wide range of critical issues. Yet despite these truths, books about the Supreme Court arrive on the shelves almost daily, while treatments of the lower courts remain rare. Thus, Jeffrey Brandon Morris’s goal in Establishing Justice in Middle America is both admirable and …

Book Review: Loren Eiseley: Commentary, Biography, And Remembrance Edited By Hilda Raz, Rasoul Sorkhabi

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This little book is a nice addition to the Loren Eiseley shelf in my home library. Much has been written about Eiseley’s life, thought, and work, but he still remains little known to the public at large. As authors of essays in this volume testify from various angles, Eiseley’s writings are a rich reservoir of notions and emotions that connect humans to nature, life, and to themselves. The essays were first published in the Fall 1997 issue of Prairie Schooner, the journal in which the 20-year-old Eiseley published his first poem in 1927.

Scott Slovic’s introductory chapter is a …

Book Review: The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots By Bob Gress And Pete Janzen, William E. Jensen Oct 2009

Book Review: The Guide To Kansas Birds And Birding Hot Spots By Bob Gress And Pete Janzen, William E. Jensen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Some newcomers to—or even long-time residents of—Kansas (or the Great Plains in general) need an inspirational introduction to the wonderful natural history offered by midcontinental North America. The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hot Spots by Bob Gress and Pete Janzen accomplishes such an introduction. Though photographic bird guides have their limitations in illustrating plumage variation, the outstanding color photographs by Gress are exceptionally sharp, colorful, and do well in depicting field marks with frame-filling views of each species profiled. The photos are vast improvements over any preceding bird guide specific to Kansas (e.g., Thompson and Ely, Birds in …

Book Review: New Faces In New Places: The Changing Geography Of American Immigration Edited By Douglas S. Massey, John Defrain Oct 2009

Book Review: New Faces In New Places: The Changing Geography Of American Immigration Edited By Douglas S. Massey, John Defrain

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Patterns of immigration to the U.S. have been changing since the 1990s. The geographic dispersion of immigrants away from traditional urban gateways— New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Chicago— into smaller communities throughout the country means that millions of native-born Americans lacking any experience with foreigners are now, for the first time in living memory, having direct and sustained contact with unassimilated immigrants. The newcomers settle in small towns as well as large cities, in the middle of the country as well as the coasts. Especially relevant to Great Plains Research readers, the new immigrants have discovered the Middle …

Book Review: The History Of Nebraska Law Edited By Alan G. Gless. Foreword By John V. Hendry, Ann C. Kitchel

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

More an anthology than a systematic history, The History of Nebraska Law represents a significant contribution to the legal history of the state. Editor, author, and judge Alan G. Gless compiles a series of legal history vignettes that do well to illustrate the unique development of Nebraska law. Each chapter, written by a different author, focuses on a single event, person, or institution that influenced the development of the law and the legal profession in Nebraska.

The subjects are as varied as they are fascinating. The book begins with a lively account of the contentious process involved in ratifying a …

Book Review: Wildlife Science: Linking Ecological Theory And Management Applications Edited By Timothy E. Fulbright And David G. Hewitt, Craig R. Allen Oct 2009

Book Review: Wildlife Science: Linking Ecological Theory And Management Applications Edited By Timothy E. Fulbright And David G. Hewitt, Craig R. Allen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wildlife Science stems from the 25th Anniversary Symposium of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute in April 2006, the topic of which furnishes the book with its full title. The symposium’s organizers celebrated the occasion by inviting “a group of the best and brightest minds in wildlife science” to participate. The edited volume, with 38 authors contributing to a total of 20 chapters, is weighted towards Texas (23 of its authors are from the state), although there are examples from the rest of the U.S. and the world.

The book is organized into five parts: “Birds,” “Mammals,” “Habitat,” “Animal Health …

Redefining The Dust Bowl Region Via Popular Perception And Geotechnology, Jess C. Porter, G. Allen Finchum Oct 2009

Redefining The Dust Bowl Region Via Popular Perception And Geotechnology, Jess C. Porter, G. Allen Finchum

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Dust Bowl is a historical vernacular region that has been delimited by a diverse group of academics, literary authors, and popular cultural voices. However, the general public’s perception of the Dust Bowl region has not been mapped and analyzed. This research queried residents of 93 Great Plains counties in order to ascertain their perceptions and knowledge of the vernacular Dust Bowl region. Analysis of the responses via the application of geographic information system mapping reveals striking differences between respondents of varying age and place of residence. Findings suggest that spatial understanding of the Dust Bowl phenomena is eroding among …

Book Review: Sharing Our Stories Of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence Edited By Sarah Deer, Bonnie Clairmont, Carrie A. Martell, And Maureen L. White Eagle, Roe Bubar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Sharing our Stories of Survival is a heartbreaking and compelling presentation of Native women surviving violence. The text is a timely collaborative offering of essays and poetry, given the international attention on human rights and violence plaguing Indigenous women. Its appeal, as Tillie Blackbear says, is the spirit in which the book was written, with “survivors at the center of the analysis.” There are a multitude of writers, yet it is the voices of Native women and survivors that compel us to consider the circumstances out of which the volume arose and for what purpose is was meant. Native women …

Understanding Human Trafficking: Development Of Typologies Of Traffickers Phase Ii, Noël Busch-Armendariz, Maura Nsonwu, Laurie Cook Heffron Oct 2009

Understanding Human Trafficking: Development Of Typologies Of Traffickers Phase Ii, Noël Busch-Armendariz, Maura Nsonwu, Laurie Cook Heffron

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)

Perpetrator typologies have been useful in understanding other crimes, such as do-mestic violence, and serve a similar purpose in enhancing our knowledge base about human trafficking. Typologies of human traffickers can be useful in improving our understanding about elements needed for successful investigations and prosecu-tions; developing appropriate services for victims and survivors; preventing human trafficking; and increasing community awareness.

The goal of this project is to explore the types of traffickers based on key characteris-tics found in the literature and in prosecuted cases. The initial two phases of this re-search, reported here, involve a review of literature, government reports, and …
