The Claremont Foodshed: A Historical Analysis, Allie Comet Jan 2009

The Claremont Foodshed: A Historical Analysis, Allie Comet

Pomona Senior Theses

On the southeast corner of the Pomona College campus a small community farm and lush oasis is nestled in the suburban jungle of Claremont, California. ‘The Farm’ is a two-acre food forest that produces a wide variety of annual vegetable crops, fruits, and perennial herbs and berries in a landscape otherwise covered largely in asphalt and lawn. From my experiences on the Farm and in the classroom studying environmental analysis , I have developed a great interest in sustainable food and farming. The failures of the modern food system, destructive to the natural environment and inadequate in providing the world’s population …

These Savages Are Called The Natchez: Violence As Exchange And Expression In Natchez-French Relations, Kathrine Seyfried Jan 2009

These Savages Are Called The Natchez: Violence As Exchange And Expression In Natchez-French Relations, Kathrine Seyfried

LSU Master's Theses

Culture contact in colonial North America sometimes led to violent interactions. The continent during colonization contained two very different populations. Native Americans and Europeans occupied the same space and necessarily developed unique relationships. Each had to maneuver around the other to forge careful and productive bonds. When they could not, conflict arose; sometimes as war, sometimes as stealing or raiding. During their brief relationship, the Natchez Indians and French colonists in Louisiana engaged in several wars. Those wars revealed various elements of each culture. In 1716 Natchez warriors responded to a French diplomatic insult by killing French fur traders travelling …

Boxing With Shadows: Contentious Politics, Culture Jamming, And Radical Creativity In Tactical Innovation, David Matthew Iles, Iii Jan 2009

Boxing With Shadows: Contentious Politics, Culture Jamming, And Radical Creativity In Tactical Innovation, David Matthew Iles, Iii

LSU Master's Theses

Dominant theories of tactical innovation in contentious politics suggest that actors innovate in times of crisis or at the margins of familiar forms of action in order to achieve strategic advantage. I argue that these theories do not satisfactorily account for the tactical creativity of a form of contention called culture jamming. Instead, I employ a biographical theory of tactical innovation to explain their distinct repertoire of contention. This theory claims that tactics are partially explained as emanations of or congruent with the life experiences, identities, dispositions, and values of actors. Bourdieu’s field theory allows me to identify a social …

Creating An Empirically Derived Community Resilience Index Of The Gulf Of Mexico Region, Ariele Nicole Baker Jan 2009

Creating An Empirically Derived Community Resilience Index Of The Gulf Of Mexico Region, Ariele Nicole Baker

LSU Master's Theses

As coastal areas increase in populations there is an increasing need to determine what community characteristics are most resilient to coastal disasters. This research proposes two methods to quantify community resilience. The factor analysis method results in a weighted additive index model of six variables to derive community resilience. The index places every community in the Gulf of Mexico on a scale from 0-1. The most resilient counties in the Gulf of Mexico region were found to be Hillsborough, FL, Pinellas, FL, Sarasota, FL, Hernando, FL, Okaloosa, FL, Kenedy, TX, and Jefferson, LA with a resilience score of 1. The …

Estimating Age At Death By Examining The Crystallite Size Of Hydroxylapatite In Human Teeth, Teresa Veronica Wilson Jan 2009

Estimating Age At Death By Examining The Crystallite Size Of Hydroxylapatite In Human Teeth, Teresa Veronica Wilson

LSU Master's Theses

Estimation of age is an important component of the biological profile that forensic anthropologists construct in order to attain a positive identification of a deceased individual. This research is a proof of concept study for the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD) on a tooth sample to estimate age. Previous research (Meneghini et al. 2003; Hanschin and Stern 1992) has concluded that the crystallite size of bone will increase with increased age. The feasibility of the use of teeth in XRD analysis was first tested using pig teeth (samples P1, P2, and P3). Another set of pig teeth (PC1, PC2, and …

Improving The Health Care Response To Gender-Based Violence: Phase Ii, Meiwita P. Budiharsana, Mai Quoc Tung

Reproductive Health

In 2009, the Population Council/Vietnam in collaboration with the Hanoi Health Service carried out an evaluation survey among Duc Giang Hospital staff to assess the extent to which awareness and perceptions of gender-based violence (GBV) had changed since the project commenced in 2005. The survey also assessed the extent to which the response of the hospital and Women’s Center for Counseling and Health had been strengthened, and made recommendations on changes to improve the situation. Overall, this project has been effective in raising awareness and willingness to integrate GBV screening into health services. The project conducted its training program at …

Proving Grounds Of Urbicide: Civil And Urban Perspectives On The Bombing Of Capital Cities, Kenneth Hewitt Jan 2009

Proving Grounds Of Urbicide: Civil And Urban Perspectives On The Bombing Of Capital Cities, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In the bombing of urban settlements, the main impacts have been on resident civilians, living space and non-military functions. This is shown in the bombing of London, Berlin and Tokyo in the Second World War, arguably the first and only serious tests of strategic air power and urbicide to determine war outcomes. The history and scope of raiding of these capital cities differed in many ways, but the civilian experience and urban implications were very similar. The bombings attacked the most vulnerable areas, where resident populations found themselves poorly protected at best. The intentions, as well as results, of the …

Student Works (2000-2009)

In the last century, the world has experienced a drastic change in its climate. In order to prevent this situation from becoming worse, the international community has come up with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992. As a result of this, the Kyoto Protocol came about in 1998. However, the United States of America which is the world's largest carbon emitter has yet to ratify this Protocol

The Kangaroo Gargoyles: Footnotes To An Australian Gothic Script, Gerry Turcotte Jan 2009

The Kangaroo Gargoyles: Footnotes To An Australian Gothic Script, Gerry Turcotte

Arts Book Chapters

For many, the opening swells of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata & Fugue in D Minor” (1703-1707) will immerse them immediately in the world of classical music. But for most people, a rather more sinister image is conjured up—perhaps (pre-Lloyd Weber), the Phantom of the Opera, pining for his loved one. Disfigured, injured by society and nature, wounded in body and soul, the Phantom broods on his tragic fate, dreaming of love and music, which he will conjoin in a grotesque fugue that will culminate in kidnapping and murder.

A tad melodramatic, perhaps, but then again, for connoisseurs of the Gothic, …

Hedonic Markets And Explicit Demands: Bid-Function Envelopes For Public Services, Neighborhood Amenities, And Commuting Costs, John Yinger Jan 2009

Hedonic Markets And Explicit Demands: Bid-Function Envelopes For Public Services, Neighborhood Amenities, And Commuting Costs, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

Hedonic regressions with house value as the dependent variable are widely used to study the value of public services and amenities. This paper builds on the theory of household bidding and sorting to derive a bid function envelope, which provides a form for these regressions. This approach uses a general characterization of household heterogeneity, yields estimates of the price elasticities of demands for services and amenities directly from the hedonic with no need for a Rosen two-step procedure, and provides tests of key hypotheses about household sorting. An application to data from Cleveland in 2000 yields precise estimates of price …

Religion And Realism In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Lisa Irene Moody Jan 2009

Religion And Realism In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Lisa Irene Moody

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A critical approach to understanding the analytical power of realism and its representational claims in the late nineteenth-century is to examine the relationship between realism and a common cultural concern that opposes the very tenets of realism, one that necessarily pervaded all aspects of class, gender, nationality, race, sexual orientation, or other classifiable subsets of society typically linked with various schools of literary theory: the subject of religion. In fact, religion, with its disembodied immaterialism, surely the antithesis of realism, represents a unique cultural problem that tests the conceptual biases of the realist mode. One basic issue is that religion …

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit And Adaptive Co-Management: A Case Study Of Narwhal Co-Management In Arctic Bay, Nunavut, Aaron T. Dale Jan 2009

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit And Adaptive Co-Management: A Case Study Of Narwhal Co-Management In Arctic Bay, Nunavut, Aaron T. Dale

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since 2001 the community of Arctic Bay, located on north-western Baffin Island, in Nunavut, Canada, has been experimenting with a new approach to narwhal management—‘community-based’ narwhal managemet. The new management system has developed some decision-making powers to the local Hunters’ and Trappers’ Organization, who are empowered/required to draft by-laws to govern the hunt. Community-based narwhal management links local, regional, territorial, and national actors and agencies in a co-management arrangement that draws its powers from, and is steered by, the Nunavut Final Agreement (1993), the comprehensive land claims agreement between the Inuit of Nunavut and Her Majesty the Queen in Right …

Examining Successful Recuritment Strategies Utilized By Volunteer Alumni, James Eric Prudhomme Jan 2009

Examining Successful Recuritment Strategies Utilized By Volunteer Alumni, James Eric Prudhomme

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the manner in which volunteer alumni recruiters at a flagship institution were able to recruit prospective students both in and out of the formal recruitment setting. Due to the challenges facing Louisiana State University with out-of-state recruitment, volunteer alumni recruiters provide a cost-effective alternative to assist this effort. Findings of this study can be used to expand the current alumni volunteer recruitment effort by providing insight into the strategies that result in success in the recruitment process, all the while encouraging fellow alumni to assist their effort. The methodology for …

The Effects Of Geomorphology And Primary Productivity On Neotropical Leaf Litter Herpetofauna: Implications For Amazonian Rainforest Conservation, Jessica L. Deichmann Jan 2009

The Effects Of Geomorphology And Primary Productivity On Neotropical Leaf Litter Herpetofauna: Implications For Amazonian Rainforest Conservation, Jessica L. Deichmann

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Amazon rainforest encompasses over one billion acres of South America and sustains remarkable biodiversity. Despite the large body of research stemming from this region, little is known about the effects of geomorphology and primary productivity on the fauna of Amazonia, and on reptiles and amphibians in particular. In my dissertation, I examine differences in the abundance, biomass and species richness of secondary consumers in the leaf litter herpetofauna communities on young and ancient soils. Herein, I develop methods to utilize existing data sets and museum collections in new studies involving community biomass. I found that, although the process of …

Essays On The Integration Of Anisotropic Landscapes Within Contemporary Geographic Profiling Models, Joshua D. Kent Jan 2009

Essays On The Integration Of Anisotropic Landscapes Within Contemporary Geographic Profiling Models, Joshua D. Kent

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A criminal geographic profile is a tool used by law enforcement professionals for estimating the probable location of a serial offender’s anchor point, or domicile. This estimate is constructed according to the distribution of linked crime scenes. While this approach can utilize a number of different modeling techniques, most fail to account for the inherent irregularities of the physical and cultural landscape. Contemporary methodologies have consistently adopted the a priori assumption that an offender’s crime scenes and anchor point are located across an isotropic surface on which the opportunity to offend is equally distributed around the offender’s residence. Simple introspection …

A Social Vulnerability-Based Genetic Algorithm To Locate-Allocate Transit Bus Stops For Disaster Evacuation In New Orleans, Louisiana, Xiaojun Qin Jan 2009

A Social Vulnerability-Based Genetic Algorithm To Locate-Allocate Transit Bus Stops For Disaster Evacuation In New Orleans, Louisiana, Xiaojun Qin

LSU Master's Theses

In the face of severe disasters, some or all of the endangered residents must be evacuated to a safe place. A portion of people, due to various reasons (e.g., no available vehicle, too old to drive), will need to take public transit buses to be evacuated. However, to optimize the operation efficiency, the location of these transit pick-up stops and the allocation of the available buses to these stops should be considered seriously by the decision-makers. In the case of a large number of alternative bus stops, it is sometimes impractical to use the exhaustive (brute-force) search to solve this …

Atlantic Tropical Cyclone: Climatology And The Contribution To Monthly And Seasonal Rainfall In The Eastern U.S. 1960-2007, Ricardo Chabarria Nogueira Jan 2009

Atlantic Tropical Cyclone: Climatology And The Contribution To Monthly And Seasonal Rainfall In The Eastern U.S. 1960-2007, Ricardo Chabarria Nogueira

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most devastating of natural disasters, producing high winds, heavy rainfall, and floods. When TC remnants are considered, these events have impacts nearly nationwide across the U.S. Tropical cyclone activity in the North Atlantic Basin experiences great variability on intra-annual, interannual, and interdecadal timescales. That variability is often associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). George Cry (1967), in his pioneering study of tropical cyclone-induced rainfall found that TC rainfall presents an intraseasonal pattern over the eastern Unite States, contributing up to 40% of the monthly rainfall. This study replicates …

The Black Press As A Political Institution: How The Chicago Defender Portrayed Jesse Jackson And Barack Obama's Historical Presidential Campaigns, Cristina Mislan Jan 2009

The Black Press As A Political Institution: How The Chicago Defender Portrayed Jesse Jackson And Barack Obama's Historical Presidential Campaigns, Cristina Mislan

LSU Master's Theses

Since the inception of Freedom’s Journal in 1827, the black press has sought to elevate the black community as well as advocate for civil rights and justice. This thesis examines news coverage in the Chicago Defender, a prominent black newspaper that has created a public sphere for the black community. Specifically, this research reveals whether the newspaper framed Reverend Jesse Jackson’s 1988 campaign differently from President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Furthermore, this thesis sought to reveal how a well-known black newspaper provided meaning for its readers about two black presidential candidates who adopted disparate political messages in order to appeal …

Ananda Devi's Narrative Strategies And Subversions., Ritu Tyagi Jan 2009

Ananda Devi's Narrative Strategies And Subversions., Ritu Tyagi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a feminist narratological study of texts by Ananda Devi, a contemporary Francophone writer from Mauritius. I examine three principle narrative strategies that allow Devi to challenge the dominant androcentric discourses. These discourses ignore the feminine world of domesticity and impose images of submission on women, thereby curbing feminine expression and quest. Inspired by the efforts of critics such as Alison Case, Robyn Warhol, Susan Lanser to study narrative structures in the context of cultural constructions of gender, I argue that Devi employs narrative strategies that allow her marginalized narrators to intervene in dominant structures of narrative construction …

Sediment Records Of Modern And Prehistoric Hurricane Strikes In Weeks Bay, Alabama, Yun Huang Jan 2009

Sediment Records Of Modern And Prehistoric Hurricane Strikes In Weeks Bay, Alabama, Yun Huang

LSU Master's Theses

This study aims to find modern and prehistoric hurricane records in sediment from marsh and swamp forest surrounding Weeks. Hurricane Ivan made landfall in this area at category 3 intensity in 2004. Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Frederic also seriously affected this region in 2005 and 1979, respectively. Seventy two cores were taken from marshes, swamps, and bay bottom. The cores, taken from baymouth marsh, contain a prominent Ivan sand layer, and possibly a prominent Frederic sand layer as well. For those cores taken from the marshes and swamps around the eastern, western, and northern Weeks Bay, there is no distinct …

Potential For Range Expansion Of The Invasive Green Mussel, Perna Viridis, In The Southeastern United States, Alyson Goodwin Urian Jan 2009

Potential For Range Expansion Of The Invasive Green Mussel, Perna Viridis, In The Southeastern United States, Alyson Goodwin Urian

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cold temperatures are thought to be among the most important determining factors of geographic distribution for tropical and sub-tropical marine invertebrates. The Asian green mussel, Perna viridis, has been introduced into coastal waters of Florida where its current distribution is hypothesized to be limited by low temperatures during winter. Lethal and sublethal effects (heat shock protein/ Hsp70 expression) of cold water and air temperatures were analyzed in two size classes of P. viridis from Florida in an effort to determine the effects of current and forecasted temperatures on the potential for range expansion. Mussels were exposed to water temperatures …

A Protocol For Occupational Therapy Involvement In The Response To Intervention Model, Nicole Bolinger Jan 2009

A Protocol For Occupational Therapy Involvement In The Response To Intervention Model, Nicole Bolinger

Occupational Therapy Capstones

In order to provide effective occupational therapy services to children within the school-based practice setting, it is important to be knowledgeable regarding the current theories and educational models which drive the educational system. Also, it is imperative that school-based occupational therapy practitioners understand the educational models and how they may impact the way occupational therapists deliver services. Chandler (2007) states, "an initiative is gathering momentum that has the potential to significantly change the way occupational therapists practice in the public school" (p. 7). Occupational therapy may have an opportunity to expand their services through a model called Response to Intervention. …
