Can Green Roofs Provide Habitat For Urban Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae)?, Sheila R. Colla, Erin Willis, Laurence Packer Dec 2009

Can Green Roofs Provide Habitat For Urban Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae)?, Sheila R. Colla, Erin Willis, Laurence Packer

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Increasing urbanization of many regions of the world has resulted in the decline of suitable habitat for wild flora and fauna. Green roofs have been suggested as a potential avenue to provide patches of good-quality habitat in highly developed regions. In this study, we surveyed green roofs in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for bee diversity and abundance to determine their potential as quality habitats in an urban area for these important pollinators. By comparing various biodiversity measures between green roofs and ground-level sites, we show that green roofs provide habitat to many bee species. Implications for pollinator conservation and urban agricultural …

Avian Use Of Harvested Crop Fields In North Dakota During Spring Migration, Alegra M. Galle, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier Dec 2009

Avian Use Of Harvested Crop Fields In North Dakota During Spring Migration, Alegra M. Galle, George M. Linz, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier

Western North American Naturalist

Broad-spectrum herbicide applications and improved harvesting efficiency of crops have reduced the availability of weed seeds and waste grains for game and nongame wildlife. Over the last decade, corn and soybean plantings have steadily increased in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota, while sunflower plantings have declined. The PPR is an important corridor for migratory birds, and changes in food availabilities at stopover habitats may affect how food resources are used. In early spring 2003 and 2004, we compared bird use of harvested fields of sunflower, soybeans, small grains, and corn in the PPR of North Dakota. Across …

No Child Left Behind: Perspectives And Knowledge Of Parental Involvement Component Section 1118 Among Administrators And Parents In Elementary Schools, Jill Yvette Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states, districts, and schools develop and implement parental involvement policies, yet, the extent of implementation remains largely unmeasured (United States Department of Education, 2002). Thus, the researcher surveyed 142 elementary school administrators and 639 parents in a southern state to determine if a statistically significant difference existed between parent and administrator perceptions and practices and current knowledge of parental involvement as outlined in NCLB and whether parental responses differed by demographics. The survey utilized a four-point Likert-type Scale with 12 questions measuring perceptions and practices (Cronbach's alpha = .84) and 8 measuring current knowledge …

Controls On Radial Growth Of Mountain Big Sagebrush And Implications For Climate Change, Rebecca E. Poore, Christine A. Lamanna, James J. Ebersole, Brian J. Enquist Dec 2009

Controls On Radial Growth Of Mountain Big Sagebrush And Implications For Climate Change, Rebecca E. Poore, Christine A. Lamanna, James J. Ebersole, Brian J. Enquist

Western North American Naturalist

Mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana) covers large areas in arid regions of western North America. Climate-change models predict a decrease in the range of sagebrush, but few studies have examined details of predicted changes on sagebrush growth and the potential impacts of these changes on the community. We analyzed effects of temperature, precipitation, and snow depth on sagebrush annual ring width for 1969 to 2007 in the Gunnison Basin of Colorado. Temperature at all times of year except winter had negative correlations with ring widths; summer temperature had the strongest negative relationship. Ring widths correlated …

Summer Burrows Of Ord's Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Ordii) In Western Nebraska: Food Content And Structure, Jeremy A. White Dec 2009

Summer Burrows Of Ord's Kangaroo Rats (Dipodomys Ordii) In Western Nebraska: Food Content And Structure, Jeremy A. White

Western North American Naturalist

Extent of larder hoarding differs among species of kangaroo rats, and limited information is available for food stored in burrows by Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii)—the most widespread species of Dipodomys. I excavated 9 burrows recently used by adult D. ordii during summer in the Sandhill Region of Nebraska. I observed only small quantities of food stored in burrows. Eight of 9 burrows contained segments of sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus) in limited quantities. These segments consisted of upper leaves with fruits (containing seeds) housed in sheaths. My observations represent the first documentation of D. ordii storing …

Map/Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Collection Development Policy, Adonna Fleming Dec 2009

Map/Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Collection Development Policy, Adonna Fleming

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

Technology has changed the focus of this collection in recent years. Presently, digital access to both maps and GIS data is the primary goal. However, maintenance of the paper map collection is vital, as it supports the graduate and undergraduate curricula in many areas. The paper map collection supports students studying geology, natural resources, geography, Great Plains studies, political sciences, history, community and urban planning, and architecture.

The University Libraries are a regional depository for U. S. Government documents, and the majority of maps in the Libraries' collection are distributed through this program. Although, most new maps currently received through …

Applied Climate-Change Analysis: The Climate Wizard Tool, Evan H. Girvetz, Chris Zganjar, George T. Raber, Edwin P. Maurer, Peter Kareiva, Joshua J. Lawler

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

Background: Although the message of ‘‘global climate change’’ is catalyzing international action, it is local and regional changes that directly affect people and ecosystems and are of immediate concern to scientists, managers, and policy makers. A major barrier preventing informed climate-change adaptation planning is the difficulty accessing, analyzing, and interpreting climate-change information. To address this problem, we developed a powerful, yet easy to use, web-based tool called Climate Wizard (http://ClimateWizard.org) that provides non-climate specialists with simple analyses and innovative graphical depictions for conveying how climate has and is projected to change within specific geographic areas throughout the world. Methodology/Principal Findings: …

Inferring Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates From Genetic Variation: A Comparative Study Of An Amphipod (Talitridae Hyalella Azteca) And Mayfly (Baetidae Callibaetis Americanus) In Great Basin Springs, Heather Lynn Stutz Dec 2009

Inferring Dispersal Of Aquatic Invertebrates From Genetic Variation: A Comparative Study Of An Amphipod (Talitridae Hyalella Azteca) And Mayfly (Baetidae Callibaetis Americanus) In Great Basin Springs, Heather Lynn Stutz

Theses and Dissertations

Whether active or passive, dispersal accompanied by gene flow shapes the population genetics and evolutionary divergence of species. Indirect methods which use genetic markers have the ability to assess effective dispersal—that which resulted in gene flow. My objective was to see if an aquatic insect and an obligate aquatic invertebrate show similar phylogeographic patterns and genetic uniqueness. Hyalella azteca and Callibaetis americanus were collected from 4-5 springs in each of six basins in the Great Basin of western North America. No dispersal or genetic studies of C. americanus have been conducted to date. However, several studies focusing on mtDNA diversity …

Analysis Of Electromagnetic And Seismic Geophysical Methods For Investigating Shallow Sub-Surface Hydrogeology, Eric M. Parks Dec 2009

Analysis Of Electromagnetic And Seismic Geophysical Methods For Investigating Shallow Sub-Surface Hydrogeology, Eric M. Parks

Theses and Dissertations

An integrated electromagnetic (EM) and seismic geophysical study was performed to evaluate non-invasive approaches to estimate depth to shallow groundwater in arid environments with elevated soil salinity where the installation of piezometers would be impractical or prohibited. Both methods were tested in two study areas (semi-arid and arid respectively), one in Palmyra, Utah, USA near the shore of Utah Lake where groundwater is shallow and unconfined in relatively homogeneous lacustrine sediments. The other area is Carson Slough, Nevada, USA near Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Amargosa Valley. The area is underlain by valley fill, with generally variable shallow depths …

The Importance Of Soft Skills In The Workplace As Perceived By Community College Instructors And Industries, Laura Suzanne Tribble

Theses and Dissertations

Soft skills include communication skills, problem-solving skills, conflict resolution, working well with other people, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Employers need employees who have adequate technical skills but who also have soft skills. There is limited information about the perceptions of which soft skills are needed in the workplace. This study attempted to close the gap in the literature concerning the perceptions of instructors and employers in the area of soft skills in the workplace. For this study, the Soft Skills Survey for Instructors and Employers was used to gather the perceptions of information technology instructors and employers in five community …

Advancements In Power System Monitoring And Inter-Operability, Vinoth Mohan Mohan Dec 2009

Advancements In Power System Monitoring And Inter-Operability, Vinoth Mohan Mohan

Theses and Dissertations

In a typical utility control center, there could be hundreds of applications running to take care of day-to-day functionality. In many cases, these applications are custom-built by different vendors. With the expectation for high reliability of the electric power grid, many utilities are increasingly moving towards sharing data with each other and with security coordinators. But this data exchange is hampered by incompatible electrical applications built on proprietary data formats and file systems. Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI‟s) Common Information Model (CIM) was envisioned as a one-sizeits-all data model to remove incompatibility between applications. This research work utilizes the CIM …
