The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan Mar 2009

The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation asks and attempts to answer the following question: What role does human emotion play in the problem of contemporary Christian discipleship and how might emotion play a provisional and productive role in its success ? The argument of this project, in response to the above question, is that recognition and recreation of human emotions is essential in corifronting the challenges of contemporary Christian discipleship. Just as the rational (left brain) component of human beings is complicit both in the spiritual pathology and redemptive potential of mankind, so to is the emotive (right brain) mind a responsible party in …

The Failures Of American Poverty Measures, Stephen Pimpare Mar 2009

The Failures Of American Poverty Measures, Stephen Pimpare

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

How we think about need or deprivation-how we judge its severity, its causes and effects, and the progress we have made (or not made) over time in reducing it-has much to do with how we define and then measure it. And, we measure it poorly. The insufficiencies of official data on American poverty are reasonably well known, yet they continue, nonetheless, to be the principal means by which we gauge need in the United States. After a review of such official measures, this article discusses alternative means of evaluating need in the United States, highlighting the benefits of examining poverty …

Demand Responsive Transport: A Review Of Schemes In England And Wales, Rebecca Laws, Marcus Enoch, Stephen Ison, Stephen Potter Mar 2009

Demand Responsive Transport: A Review Of Schemes In England And Wales, Rebecca Laws, Marcus Enoch, Stephen Ison, Stephen Potter

Journal of Public Transportation

Local-authority-administered Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) schemes are increasingly prevalent in England and Wales, partly as a result of the growth in the availability of government funding. However, insufficient research has been undertaken into the nature of these schemes and their performance, making it difficult to predict their future role. In this respect, a survey was undertaken to collect data on the background, operation, and performance of DRT schemes in England and Wales. It found that DRT schemes are often designed in an attempt to tackle social problems caused by poor accessibility and that they took time to become established, to …

Psychological Determinants Of The Intention To Use The Bus In Ho Chi Minh City, Satoshi Fujii, Hong Tan Van Mar 2009

Psychological Determinants Of The Intention To Use The Bus In Ho Chi Minh City, Satoshi Fujii, Hong Tan Van

Journal of Public Transportation

This study explores the behavioral intention to use the bus while considering the perceived quality of bus service, problem awareness, and moral obligation of people in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. The purpose is to test the feasibility of developing mobility management measures persuading motorcycle users to use the bus more, and if so, how. Principal components analysis on a set of psychological factors related to various aspects of bus use yielded four factors: moral concerns, negative expression, quality perception, and social status. The regression of the intention on these four factors revealed that determinants of intention to use …

Water Scarcity, Conflict, And Security In A Climate Change World: Challenges And Opportunities For International Law And Policy, Gabriel Eckstein Mar 2009

Water Scarcity, Conflict, And Security In A Climate Change World: Challenges And Opportunities For International Law And Policy, Gabriel Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

Although climate change is expected to have major consequences that affect the global environment in its broadest sense, one of the earliest and most direct impacts will be on Earth’s fresh water systems. While some regions will experience increased precipitation, others will suffer serious scarcity. Among others, consequences are likely to include severe flooding, extreme droughts, and meandering border-rivers. This, in turn, will affect human migration patterns, population growths, agricultural activities, economic development, and the environment. This article explores the impact that climate change will have on regional and global freshwater resources and the resulting legal and policy implications that …

The Armor Of Democracy: Volunteerism On The Home Front In World War Ii California, Christopher Michael Head Mar 2009

The Armor Of Democracy: Volunteerism On The Home Front In World War Ii California, Christopher Michael Head

Master's Theses

This paper is an in-depth study on the role of Home Front Volunteerism in California during World War II. It argues that Volunteerism was integral to America’s eventual victory. This paper fills a gap in historical writings on World War II and shows that Volunteerism is a topic worthy of study. Volunteerism played a major role in California. It helped to keep morale high even when the war was progressing poorly. Volunteerism also helped to create new communities out of those shattered by the upheaval of the Great Depression. It provided a patriotic outlet for Americans desperate to aid the …

L’Acte De Juger Entre Connaissance Et Distance Du Monde, Louis Lebel Mar 2009

L’Acte De Juger Entre Connaissance Et Distance Du Monde, Louis Lebel

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

In this lecture, the author addresses the appropriate role of the judge in society. Judicial independence and impartiality require that a judge seek to distance herself from the world, prior connections, conflicts of interest and social activism. Although judges may take judicial notice of certain facts, they are otherwise limited to the arguments of the parties to a dispute. Nevertheless, judges must be attentive and critical observers of the world, eager to learn and gain knowledge about the evolving nature of economic life, science, religion and all other issues in contemporary society because distance and impartiality from the world do …

Examination Of The Regional Supply And Demand Balance For Renewable Electricity In The United States Through 2015, Lori Bird, David Hurlbut, Pearl Donohoo, Karlynn Cory, Claire Kreycik Mar 2009

Examination Of The Regional Supply And Demand Balance For Renewable Electricity In The United States Through 2015, Lori Bird, David Hurlbut, Pearl Donohoo, Karlynn Cory, Claire Kreycik

Publications (E)

This report examines the balance between the demand and supply of new renewable electricity in the United States on a regional basis through 2015. It expands on a 2007 NREL study (Swezey et al. 2007) that assessed the supplynational basis. As with the earlier study, this analysis relies on estimates of renewable energy supplies compared to demand for renewable energy generation needed to meet existing state renewable portfolio standard (RPS) policies in 28 states, as well as demand by consumers who voluntarily purchase renewable energy. However, it does not address demand by utilities that may procure cost-effective renewables through an …

Advancing The Fiscal Health Of Low-Income Families: A Public And Community Health Approach, Doreen Treacy Mar 2009

Advancing The Fiscal Health Of Low-Income Families: A Public And Community Health Approach, Doreen Treacy

Center for Social Policy Publications

For decades, health researchers have documented the links between individual and household income/wealth and clinical health outcomes. The research and literature consistently point to both income inequality (i.e. individual household income/wealth as compared to other households in the same state) and individual household income as predictors of diminished health and morbidity. And yet the current framework for providing financial education, disseminating asset building information, and overall responding to the financial health of individuals and households takes no cues from public health and community health best practices. Further, the documented links between financial stress and compromised physical health are compelling enough …

Poverty In The Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Community, Randy Albelda, M.V. Lee Badgett, Alyssa Schneebaum, Gary J. Gates

Center for Social Policy Publications

In 2007, 12.5% of Americans were officially counted as poor by the United States Census Bureau. People from every region, race, age, and sex are counted among our nation’s poor, where ―poor‖ is defined as living in a family with an income below the federal poverty level. In contrast, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people are invisible in these poverty statistics. This report undertakes the first analysis of the poor and low-income lesbian, gay, and bisexual population. The social and policy context of LGB life provides many reasons to think that LGB people are at least as likely—and perhaps more …

Ohio River Denial As A Transportation Corridor And Its Economic Impacts On The Energy Industry, Caglar Utku Guler Mar 2009

Ohio River Denial As A Transportation Corridor And Its Economic Impacts On The Energy Industry, Caglar Utku Guler

Theses and Dissertations

What if the Ohio River is disrupted or denied partially or completely as a transportation corridor? A disruption may be either a natural or man-made disaster or a planned outage on the river’s lock and dam structures. Recent history is full of water transport disruption events having significant economic effects on the waterside industries. To assess coal-based economic impacts, we developed a network flow model to represent waterside coal-fired power plants situated along the Ohio River, their respective coal supplying mines, and the various transportation modes that connect them. We show that significant transportation-centric insights can be derived by using …

Oral Healthcare In Kenya: Implications For Dental Hygiene Care, Grace Kogi Mar 2009

Oral Healthcare In Kenya: Implications For Dental Hygiene Care, Grace Kogi

Dental Hygiene Master's Papers and Projects

This paper is a review of literature describing the educational, healthcare delivery and healthcare finance systems in Kenya. The document discusses the unmet oral health needs of the Kenyan population and how implementing the role of the dental hygienist would positively impact oral health promotion throughout the country. Kenyan communities experience all of the major environmental determinants of oral disease, e.g., widespread poverty, underdevelopment, outdated dental equipment, insufficient supply and distribution of qualified dental care professionals and lack of preventive oral health services. About six in ten Kenyans are unable to afford healthcare, clothing, or food; therefore, oral healthcare has …
