Using semi-structured interviews, it seeks to understand the range of opinions on the safety of reclaimed water, its potential prospects as an alternative drinking water supply, and its contribution to the sustainable use of …

Secondary Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Building Relationships For Personalizing Education, Greg S. Grooters
Theses and Dissertations
Increased accountability, due to No Child Left Behind Act (2001), has brought a sharp focus on America's schools. Through school initiatives, yearly progress reports, and testing, public schools continue to identify potential areas of improvement. The study's purpose was to identify the perceptions of high school students and teachers regarding student and teacher relationships effecting the personalization of learning at West Fargo High School. The West Fargo High School teachers and students (grades 9-12) completed parallel on-line surveys in the winter of 2006. All of the students completed the survey on-line with anonymous accounts. The teacher's survey was administered through …

News Apathy Syndrome?: The News Reviewing Behaviors Of Utc Students, Paige Gabriel
News Apathy Syndrome?: The News Reviewing Behaviors Of Utc Students, Paige Gabriel
Honors Theses
As technology advances, creating new news mediums and changing old news mediums, consumers are bombarded with an increasingly diverse selection of news sources. News consumers choose news mediums based on their past experiences with these sources, so news reviewing behaviors formed during the college years typically endure to some degree for the rest of an individual's life. Studying the news consumption patterns of university students can help researchers predict future trends in news consumption behaviors. The goals of this project are to identify the weekly frequency of news reviewing among a selected sample population of students; to identify the main …

Huiyuan(汇源): My “Nationalistic” Juice, Yu Zhou
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
On March 18, 2009, the Chinese Commerce Ministry rejected Coca-Cola’s proposal to take over Huiyuan, the top juice maker in China. This deal was a closely watched one as an early test of China’s newly instated anti-monopoly law. The veto was greeted with dismay in the major western media and widely interpreted as a new signal of Chinese protectionism. The article in the Times and the editorial by Financial Times suggested that the Chinese government made decisions based on nationalistic considerations, rather than any sound economic or legal rationale. The rejection is thought to have far-reaching ramifications for foreign investment …

Speaking Of Myself: Independence, Self-Representation, And The Speeches Of Rudyard Kipling, Jacob M. Wilkes
Theses and Dissertations
Rudyard Kipling is a man of immense diversity. He successfully managed to write for over half a century in a variety of genres: short story, travelogue, ballad, personal narrative, and news reporting, to name only a few. While doing so, Kipling readily interacted with a range of subjects and created a multitude of ideas. Likewise, on a personal level, Kipling led an immensely diverse life. He could easily claim four separate continents as home, living variously in India, the United States, England, and South Africa. By profession he was a writer, but as an observer he was so skilled that …

Politics, Journalism And Web 2.0 In The 2008 U.S. Presidential Elections, Wayne Scott Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The explosion of new political speech in digital formats in the 2008 elections, especially those involving social networking, offered new opportunities and challenges for political journalists, campaign participants and voters alike. This review of new political media in 2008 examines how these new methods of political organizing and communications work and provides insights to further understand how media can best cover and participate in them. The thesis details how 2008 was the first fully Web 2.0 election, exhibiting its characteristics of interactivity, use of databases and the "long tail" of microniche Internet websites. Three new media uses - online, database-driven …

Health Care Workforce Issues And Access To Care: Assessing The Present And Preparing For The Future, Fitzhugh Mullan
Health Policy and Management Congressional Testimonies
Summary of Testimony Fitzhugh Mullan, M.D. Before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, March 24, 2009
- Improving access to health care in the United States will require modifications in the structure of the U.S. physician workforce, the foremost of which will be the construction of a strong primary care delivery base.
- There are over 800,000 practicing physicians today or 280 physicians per 100,000 people. This represents a greater physician density than Canada (210) and the United Kingdom (250) but a density less than France (340) and Germany (350).
- The distribution of physicians in the U.S. heavily favors urban …

Multimodal Text Designers: A Case Study Of Literacy Events In A Multicultural Context, Mary-Virginia Feger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The erasure of Latino/a adolescents' multiliteracies in school settings affects both their views of education and their entry into the community outside of school. Framed by literacy-as-social-practices perspectives and communities of practice theory, this case study explored what happened when a group of 13 Latino/a adolescents and their Latina teacher engaged in a six-week play production in an after-school program and performed the play for parents. It examined the relationship between the participants' discourse practices and their performance, and determined how they validated their performances. Data collected included observations, interviews, students' written reflective responses, a fieldwork journal, and a DVD …
