Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Place has certain connotations that are involved in shaping the identity of an individual or a community. Due to the importance of place or location in identity formation, Cultural Studies has its own area of analysis focusing on the understanding of place, which is cultural geography. Peter Jackson (1989: 23, quoted by Giles and Middleton 1999: 104) defines cultural geography as a study on how cultures are constituted by social practises occurring in certain contexts which are influenced by historical and geographical factors. The discussion of artistic works centred on the role of place in identity formation becomes an interesting …

Air Toxics And Equity: A Geographic Analysis Of Environmental Health Risks In Florida, Angela Gilbert Apr 2009

Air Toxics And Equity: A Geographic Analysis Of Environmental Health Risks In Florida, Angela Gilbert

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A large number of quantitative studies have examined social inequities in the geographic distribution of air pollution. Although previous research has made strides towards understanding the nature and extent of inequities, they have been limited methodologically in three ways. First, the presence of pollutants have been rarely linked to their adverse health effects, with many studies using proximity to sources as a proxy for risk. Second, there has been a tendency to study a single pollution source instead of assessing multiple types of sources. Finally, conventional statistical methods such as multivariate regression have been limited by their inability to discern …

Self‐Organized Permeability In Carbonate Aquifers, Stephen R.H. Worthington, D. C. Ford Apr 2009

Self‐Organized Permeability In Carbonate Aquifers, Stephen R.H. Worthington, D. C. Ford

KIP Articles

Advances over the past 40 years have resulted in a clear understanding of how dissolution processes in carbonate rocks enhance aquifer permeability. Laboratory experiments on dissolution rates of calcite and dolomite have established that there is a precipitous drop in dissolution rates as chemical equilibrium is approached. These results have been incorporated into numerical models, simulating the effects of dissolution over time and showing that it occurs along the entire length of pathways through carbonate aquifers. The pathways become enlarged and integrated over time, forming self‐organized networks of channels that typically have apertures in the millimeter to centimeter range. The …

Frames And Ways Of Knowing: Key Considerations For Policy Responses To Climate Risk And Vulnerability, Helen Ingram, Joanna Endter-Wada Apr 2009

Frames And Ways Of Knowing: Key Considerations For Policy Responses To Climate Risk And Vulnerability, Helen Ingram, Joanna Endter-Wada

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

This paper argues that resilience and adaptability in face of climate change is largely dependent upon the ways in which framing occurs and knowledge is produced and diffused in particular communities and contexts. Climate change problems are contextual, multifaceted and complex, engendering wide variation in social sense making and invoking different formulations of facts and relevant knowledge. Transferring and translating information among different ways of knowing and transforming ways of knowing so that they are more inclusive and accepted is critical to adaptability and resilience. Examples from the American West and Latin America illustrate that only when multiple frames and …

From The Barcelona Process To The Union For The Mediterranean: Sectors And Levels Of Integration And Trust In The Mediterranean Region, Astrid B. Boening

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is a case study of the EuroMed Partnership (EMP). It aims to examine the complex political, economic and social interrelationships in the EMP, and their impact on regional security in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The main thesis proposed here is that regional integration is taking place to the point of a regional security complex being established among EMP-member countries. This would contrast with the Middle East Regional Security Complex suggested by Buzan and Waever (2003). The dynamics observed reflect realist concerns with security among members. They also display neo-liberal integration approaches as well as the regional reciprocal (re-)constructions of …

Software Simulation And Emergency Response Training: A Case Study, Heather Burke Apr 2009

Software Simulation And Emergency Response Training: A Case Study, Heather Burke

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Emergency response training has several shortcomings that affect its effectiveness. Full-scale exercises are effective, but expensive, cumbersome and time consuming to plan and conduct. Discussion based trainings are much more cost effective and easy to plan, but the retention rate is lower on covered material. It is important to get the most out of limited training budgets by finding a way to be both efficient and effective with time and money. In this case study, the problems of the 2002 New Mexico Public Health ICS training are analyzed. This training provides good examples of how traditional training tools, style and …

Justice Above Profit, Sustainability Above Growth, Humanity Above Economy: Vandana Shiva And The Alternative Development Movement, Julia Magon Braker Apr 2009

Justice Above Profit, Sustainability Above Growth, Humanity Above Economy: Vandana Shiva And The Alternative Development Movement, Julia Magon Braker

Pomona Senior Theses

Multiple activists challenge the established development paradigm, prioritizing issues such as human rights, economic justice and environmental sustainability, as opposed to neoliberal development’s focus on macroeconomics and corporations. These activists include Dr. Vandana Shiva. Well-renowned activists, academics and politicians criticize the stances that Shiva takes on globalization and development issues, claiming that they are uninformed, too radical or misguided. These thoughts provoke the core question of this thesis—do Vandana Shiva’s theories and practices promote just, sustainable development?

Effects Of Elevation And Genetic Introgression On Growth Of Colorado River Cutthroat Trout, Mark C. Belk, Michael N. Mcgee, Dennis K. Shiozawa Apr 2009

Effects Of Elevation And Genetic Introgression On Growth Of Colorado River Cutthroat Trout, Mark C. Belk, Michael N. Mcgee, Dennis K. Shiozawa

Western North American Naturalist

Inland populations of cutthroat trout have suffered dramatic declines and some subspecies are considered threatened or endangered. Understanding patterns of variation and factors that influence life history in populations is important for conservation and management. We determined effects of elevation, sex, and genetic introgression (with Yellowstone cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss) on growth rates of Colorado River cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus) in the Sheep Creek drainage in the Uinta Mountains of Utah. In this high-elevation system, native trout grew slowly and matured relatively late. Elevation, sex, and genetic introgression all …
