Solidification Of Oyster Shells Used As Cadmium Ion Removal Material With Portland Cement, Chayapat Tabtong Jan 2009

Solidification Of Oyster Shells Used As Cadmium Ion Removal Material With Portland Cement, Chayapat Tabtong

Applied Environmental Research

This research investigated the soiJdification of oyster shell (Crassostre commercialis) used as Cd2+ removal material with Portland cement by varying the oyster shell/Portland cement ratio and curing time. Leachability of Cd2+ was determined with Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The expel trnental result demonstrated that the optimum condition for oyster shell/Portland cement ratio was 4. After curing time for 7 d, densities of solidified oyster shell (OS-A) as well as bu rn ed oyster shell (OS-B) were 1.87 and 2.15 ton m-3, respectively. Unconfined compressive strength of solidified OS-A and OS-B were 69.7 and 134.5 kg cm-2, respectively Cd2+ in …

The Molecular Identification Of Non Tuberculosis Mycobacteria (Ntm) From Clinical And Water Samples., Anne Curtin Jan 2009

The Molecular Identification Of Non Tuberculosis Mycobacteria (Ntm) From Clinical And Water Samples., Anne Curtin

Theses

Nontuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM) are now considered a major source of opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients. Reliable and rapid identification of NTM species is of the upmost importance for patient treatment regimes. Firstly, this study looked at the epidemiological trends of a small number of NTM isolates (n=50) from a large teaching hospital in Southern Ireland Cork University Hospital (C.U.H.). We found that 85% of clinical isolates were sampled from the respiratory tract, which is not unusual as the majority of samples analysed in the hospital lab originated from sputum samples. Also, the majority of patients were 59 years of age …

The Unique Silencer, Christofer Ditscheit

Honors Program Theses

For decades people have been puzzled by the sudden drop in voter turnout that occurred in the 1970's and continued through the 1980's and 1990's. The demographics of those voting and not voting have been analyzed repeatedly for some clue as to why people were not turning out in the same numbers. Repeatedly, different factors have been addressed as contributors to the reduction of voter turnout. Studies have found that the United States has a unique factor contributing to the low voter turnout. Even after controlling for socioeconomic and institutional factors, there is something about the United States that has …

Women For A Peaceful Christmas: Wisconsin Homemakers Seek To Remake American Culture, Nancy Unger Jan 2009

Women For A Peaceful Christmas: Wisconsin Homemakers Seek To Remake American Culture, Nancy Unger

History

In the autumn of 1971, sixteen Madison homemakers, including Nan Cheney and Sharon Stein, began "Women for a Peaceful Christmas" (WPC), a unique attempt to do nothing less than remake American culture. Under the slogan "No More Shopping Days 'Til Peace," WPC organized ostensibly powerless homemakers into a "quiet revolt against 'an economy which thrives on war and the destruction of our earth's resources.'' WPC urged the public (especially women, the sex that did the vast bulk of holiday shopping) to take economic, political, and environmental matters into their own hands. "If you don't want your Christmas celebrations to be …

The Tadpole Of Hypsiboas Atlanticus (Anura, Hylidae) From Northeastern Brazil, Filipe A. C. Do Nascimento, Marcelo G. De Lima, Gabriel O. Skuk, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

The tadpole of Hypsiboas atlanticus (Caramaschi & Velosa, 1996) is described from the municipality of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil. At stage 36 the larvae have an overall elliptical body in lateral and dorsal views, oral disc anteroventral, spiracular tube sinistral, and labial tooth row formula 2(1,2)/3(1). The oral disc is surrounded, almost completely (anterior medial gap present) by a single row of marginal papillae. Described tadpoles of the H. punctatus species group can be differentiated by a combined disc oral features. Additional descriptions of H. punctatus (Schneider, 1799) tadpoles from populations throughout South America may be helpful in determining …

Greening Demand: Energy Consumption And U.S. Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs Jan 2009

Greening Demand: Energy Consumption And U.S. Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs

Law Faculty Publications

The search for greener, less polluting energy supplies has dominated discussions of u.s. climate change strategy, but we often overlook cheaper and faster greenhouse gas emissions reductions achievable through energy efficiency and conservation. In this article, I outline a decade-long "greening demand" agenda to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the United States. The federal government should aim to reduce U.S. energy consumption by fifteen percent by 2016 and twenty percent by 2020 to achieve needed reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

While the United States has achieved notable efficiency gains since the 1970s, several market failures and other barriers …

Jumping The Pond: Transnational Law And The Future Of Chemical Regulation, Noah M. Sachs Jan 2009

Jumping The Pond: Transnational Law And The Future Of Chemical Regulation, Noah M. Sachs

Law Faculty Publications

Just as domestic pollution can cause transnational externalities, domestic environmental regulation can create transnational ripple effects in other jurisdictions. In this Article, I show how chemical regulation-long a weak link in the network of U.S. environmental laws-is about to be reshaped and reformed through the extraterritorial ripple effects of new European Union legislation. Contributing to both international law and environmental law scholarship, this Article shows how transnational information flows can be harnessed to end the longstanding drought of data on chemical toxicity in the United States. ·

Part I of this Article critiques the U.S. chemical regulatory regime, arguing that …

Learning The Lay Of Their Land: Data Recording By Maine Land Trusts, Patrick John Roche Jan 2009

Learning The Lay Of Their Land: Data Recording By Maine Land Trusts, Patrick John Roche

Honors Theses

Land trusts have led the recent, rapid expansion in private land conservation in the US. As they have grown, many questions have emerged as to the value of their conservation efforts, especially in the long-term. To address this data gap, studies have evaluated easement restrictions and the characteristics of land trust protected property. I take a novel approach by investigating the data that land trusts record about their protected properties and its impact on their capacity to protect conservation values. I surveyed 55 land trusts operating in Maine about data they record in baseline documentation reports. A majority (82%) had …

Factors Influencing Conservation Success Or Failure In Tiger Range States, Megan C. Saunders Jan 2009

Factors Influencing Conservation Success Or Failure In Tiger Range States, Megan C. Saunders

Honors Theses

Tigers are currently found in 13 countries. Three of eight recognized subspecies are extinct and the other subspecies are considered endangered throughout their range. Major threats to tigers include habitat and prey loss and poaching. Most studies of tiger decline, to date, have explored direct threats. This study uses a range-wide approach to explore possible underlying drivers of tiger decline. I used recent tiger population estimates and identified 6 biological measures and 27 socioeconomic measures to ask why some countries are more successful in conserving tigers than others. Data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses in SPSS. Higher rates …

Environmental Politics In Paradise: Resistance To The Selling Of Vieques, Sherrie Baver Jan 2009

Environmental Politics In Paradise: Resistance To The Selling Of Vieques, Sherrie Baver

Publications and Research

The most notable instance of a massive and successful social protest in Puerto Rico in recent years has been on the island of Vieques between 1999 and 2003. This was a rare case in which Puerto Ricans were able to overcome their partisan divisions to end the U.S. Navy's 60 years of training on this small, 51- square-mile island off the main island's east coast. Part of the reason for the Vieques victory, including gaining support from some influential U.S. politicians, was that leaders framed the protest in terms of human rights, public health and environmental degradation rather than Yanqui …

Use Of Fenton’S Reagent As A Disinfectant, Ariamalar Selvakumar, Mary Ellen Tuccillo, Swarna Muthukrishnan, Asim B. Ray

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Several compositions of Fenton’s Reagent and hydrogen peroxide alone were used to disinfect combined sewage samples from a wastewater treatment facility. The presettled samples contained suspended solids (SS) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) at concentrations of 28 and 290 mg/L, respectively. Disinfection with Fenton’s Reagent was carried out at a pH between 5.90 and 6.0 and at a temperature of 25◦C. All disinfected samples contained residual oxidants. Under all reaction conditions studied, complete inactivation of E. coli was achieved within one minute of the addition of Fenton’s Reagent. Disinfection with hydrogen peroxide alone under similar conditions is incomplete even under …
