Fatigue And Its Effect On Cabin Crew Member Performance, Stephanie Hide Mas Jan 2009

Fatigue And Its Effect On Cabin Crew Member Performance, Stephanie Hide Mas

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

Since 1993, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated fatigue was a contributing factor in eight airline catastrophes in the US resulting in 250 fatalities. Many proposals to mitigate fatigue as a safety issue in aviation have been suggested. Those on the NTSB List of Most Wanted Transportation Safety Improvements involve “hours of on-duty work” rules, which provide an essential set of limits on the work day for all transportation workers. However, most fatigue studies have focused on cockpit crew and not on the cabin crew. This report investigates cabin crew members, their scheduled work, rest and sleep times …

Social Cartography As A Tool For Conflict Analysis And Resolution: The Experience Of The Afro-Colombian Communities Of Robles, Elena P. Bastidas, Carlos A. Gonzales

Peace and Conflict Studies

The field of conflict resolution is in constant evolution. Every day, theories are defined and redefined, and new contributions are made to the field. This continuous process challenges scholars, researchers, and practitioners to develop new conceptual and methodological frameworks for the analysis of conflict. This article highlights the potential of social cartography (participatory mapping) as a tool for the transformation of environmental and social conflicts at the household, community, national, and international levels. The advantages of social cartography as an appraisal, planning, and analytical tool for conflict transformation are illustrated here with a case study of the Afro-Colombian community of …

Class Tackles Energy Plan, Laura Davis

Linfield Magazine

They trail into class from all campus corners, a group as varied as the issues they are studying.

Dropping backpacks at their feet, 10 students settle around a table ready for work. They are business students, historians, artists, biologists, musicians. “Technically he’s contributing to greenhouse gas emissions because of all the carbon dioxide he expends when he plays his trumpet,” someone jokes, gesturing toward a classmate. Others nod and smile.

Though diverse, they share a common passion – the environment.

Can Non-State Certification Systems Bolster State-Centered Efforts To Promote Sustainable Development Through The Clean Development Mechanism, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Kelly Levin, Benjamin Cashore Jan 2009

Can Non-State Certification Systems Bolster State-Centered Efforts To Promote Sustainable Development Through The Clean Development Mechanism, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Kelly Levin, Benjamin Cashore

Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell

Increasing economic globalization has coincided with the emergence and escalating influence of non-state actors and organizations in domestic and international policymaking, from shaping policy agendas to promoting private authority. The latter phenomenon has arisen, at least in part, from a critique of states' failures to adopt effective and enduring environmental policies. Rather than contest "command and control" institutions, non-state strategies embrace market approaches built around incentives and price mechanisms. Several forms of non-state authority have emerged, including corporate social responsibility, provision of information through labeling, and self-reporting.

Circulation And Water Property Variations In The Nearshore Alaskan Beaufort Sea (1999 – 2007), Thomas J. Weingartner, Seth L. Danielson, Jeremy L. Kasper, Stephen R. Okkonen Jan 2009

Circulation And Water Property Variations In The Nearshore Alaskan Beaufort Sea (1999 – 2007), Thomas J. Weingartner, Seth L. Danielson, Jeremy L. Kasper, Stephen R. Okkonen

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Six years of current meter and water property data were collected year-round (1999 – 2007) from the landfast ice zone of the nearshore Alaskan Beaufort Sea (ABS). The data show large seasonal differences in the circulation that is defined by the set-up and breakup of the landfast ice. During the open water season (July – mid-October) mid-depth currents often exceed 20 cm-s-1, whereas during the landfast ice season (mid-October – June) these currents are generally <10 cm-s-1. Tidal currents are feeble (<3 cm-s-1) year-round and probably do not play a dynamically significant role on the inner shelf.

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

There are many ways of describing the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) methodology, but in general, the basic steps include: System Definition, Hazard Identification, Frequency Analysis, Consequence Modeling, and Risk Calculations and Assessment. The present study is aimed at the Consequence Analysis, which was an integral part in the QRA for the transportation of ammonia by rail from Gurun to Port Klang. The software package SAFETI has been used to model the resulting behavior of the released ammonia and the extent of the damage expressed in terms of distance to certain effect levels. Besides, sensitivity analysis was also carried out to …

Herbivory In The Amazon Lowland Tropical Rainforest, With A Special Focus On Myrmecophytes (Genus Tococa), Meghan Mcavoy Jan 2009

Herbivory In The Amazon Lowland Tropical Rainforest, With A Special Focus On Myrmecophytes (Genus Tococa), Meghan Mcavoy

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines several aspects of herbivory with a specific focus on myrmecophytes from the genus Tococa in the Amazon lowland tropical rainforest. Field work was conducted at several different sites in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, selected for their proximity to the Amazon Conservatory of Tropical Studies (ACTS) canopy walkway. This enabled research at different rainforest canopy levels. I analyzed the percentage of leaves with signs of herbivory versus those with none. Of 2,000 leaves surveyed, 92.5% show signs of herbivory while only 7.5% had not been fed upon. I compared herbivory between two species of plants from the Tococa …

Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner Jan 2009

Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner

Theses & ETDs

As climate change becomes a serious political issue in recent decades, dialogue concerning how to address the problem has intensified. The evangelical community has made a surprising entrance into this discussion. Evangelicals have traditionally fought for conservative social causes, and environmentalism has been stereotyped as liberal and secular. The manifestation of an evangelical voice in the discourse has heavy implications for the future of environmentalism and governmental approaches to the issue. However, there has been considerable debate over how “dominion belief,” anthropocentrism, and theological and political conservatism affect environmental attitudes. In the context of this debate, then, what obstacles had …

Form And Function: The Development Of Parks And Monuments In 20th Century United States, Dana Bassett Jan 2009

Form And Function: The Development Of Parks And Monuments In 20th Century United States, Dana Bassett

Theses & ETDs

The difficulties faced by rapidly industrializing cities in the early twentieth-century warranted urban planning that was in a large part inspired by the rural cemetery movement in mid-nineteenth century United States. These scenic cemeteries combined pastoral scenery and commemorative art within the burial grounds to unexpected ends. Urban reformers looked to nature to ease the moral and physical depravity of the urban environment. Public parks allowed people unwelcome in the cemetery to temporarily escape the struggles of city life. Reformers also promoted the neo-classical art and architecture within the cemetery in an attempt to cultivate upright citizens. The proliferation of …

The Texture And Mineralogy Of Two Sarasota County Beaches And Implications For Beach Nourishment, Steven Norton Jan 2009

The Texture And Mineralogy Of Two Sarasota County Beaches And Implications For Beach Nourishment, Steven Norton

Theses & ETDs

Geological factors, environmental factors, and public policy consideration all have implication for beach nourishment. Policy drives projects to use methods that are the least destructive (Stauble, 1986). However, this aim is not always met because of lack of consideration of all possible factors. The texture and mineralogy of beaches and nourishment sources are not thoroughly considered. Improper sediment texture may cause excess erosion as well as displace biota (Frihy and Lotfy, 1994). On two beaches in Sarasota County the texture and mineralogy were compared for potential policy implications in reference to beach nourishment. This study argues, through the differences between …

Global Transitions: A Visual Portrayal Of Anthropogenic Impacts On The Environment, Deanna Erickson Jan 2009

Global Transitions: A Visual Portrayal Of Anthropogenic Impacts On The Environment, Deanna Erickson

Theses & ETDs

The Earth has been considerably altered by human influence with serious environmental consequences. Increasing population and consumption rates are depleting forests, oil, and freshwater resources. Land converted for agriculture and urbanization degrades essential natural ecosystems. Water and air pollution are destroying habitats and endangering the plant and animal species that depend on them. Humans are intentionally altering sensitive cycles, ignoring the important services provided by maintaining balance in atmospheric, hydrologic, and terrestrial cycles. These alterations are increasing the severity and impacts of climate change for the future. A combination of changing policy and enhancing personal responsibility could benefit the world …

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross Jan 2009

Film-Poetry Synthesis And The Birth Of Experimental Cinema In France, Scott Ross

Theses & ETDs

French poet Guillaume Apollinaire’s 1917 lecture “L’Esprit nouveau et les poètes” announced the beginning of the Parisian poets’ sincere engagement with cinema: in the following decade, the French literary community became increasingly involved in the development of film theory and criticism, and France’s young generation of experimental filmmakers began to consider modern poetry as a potential inspiration for their work. Some theorists and filmmakers even proposed the widely interpreted concept of a cinépoème: a cinematic poem. This thesis examines the presence and influence of French poetry in three such cinépoèmes made in the late 1920s. In Emak-Bakia, Man Ray employs …

Domestic Scale Aquaponics: The Form, Function, And Economic Viability Thereof, Ravi Banerjee Jan 2009

Domestic Scale Aquaponics: The Form, Function, And Economic Viability Thereof, Ravi Banerjee

Theses & ETDs

Aquaponics is the integrated production of plants and marine organisms in closed recirculating systems. The integration of fish and vegetable growth systems creates a more efficient production environment. Aquaponics systems offer numerous economic benefits stemming from many sources including nutrient reuse, decreased space and water usage, and a reduction in combined infrastructural costs. Aquaponic farming methods have been in existence for thousands of years. However, as societies develop, the benefits offered by this field of agricultural science become more applicable. Aquaponics is a viable means of enabling not only commercial farmers to increase their production but for the individual to …
