Asymmetries In Tidal Flow Over A Seto Inland Sea Scour Pit, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Xinyu Guo Jan 2009

Asymmetries In Tidal Flow Over A Seto Inland Sea Scour Pit, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Xinyu Guo

Journal of Marine Research

Underway profiles of current velocity were combined with stationary profiles of temperature and salinity around a vertically mixed scour pit of the Seto Inland Sea throughout a semidiurnal tidal cycle. This was done with the purpose of determining (a) whether flood flow is asymmetric relative to ebb over a pit with weakly stratified conditions, and (b) whether there is a dynamic transition from frictionally dominated tidal flow to advectively dominated tidal flow over the pit. These questions arose from previous studies elsewhere under stratified water columns, in contrast to the unstratified conditions at the study site. Observations showed an acceleration …

Developing A Monitoring Protocol For The Monkey River Watershed, Belize, Central America, Sean Elliott Collins Jan 2009

Developing A Monitoring Protocol For The Monkey River Watershed, Belize, Central America, Sean Elliott Collins

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The study of tropical aquatic systems has been limited. Research in developing countries can be challenging due to inadequate resources and cultural variety. Generally, efforts are concentrated on developing and maintaining economic stability rather than ecological sustainability. The aim of this project was to preliminarily develop and utilize a rapid bioassessment protocol (RBP) for the Monkey River watershed in Belize by determining which metrics best described overall stream health. Like biomonitoring protocols already established for temperate systems, a regional tropical aquatic watershed monitoring program should provide information including stream and watershed health. These protocols score systems on a variety of …

An Undescribed Gecko (Gekkonidae: Cyrtodactylus) From Deer Cave, Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, With Comments On The Distribution Of Bornean Cave Geckos, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson Jan 2009

An Undescribed Gecko (Gekkonidae: Cyrtodactylus) From Deer Cave, Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, With Comments On The Distribution Of Bornean Cave Geckos, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Geckos of the genus Cyrtodactylus are a speciose group in Southeast Asia, with at least nine species known from the island of Borneo (Das & Ismail, 2001; Das, 2006). Of these species, Cyrtodactylus cavernicolus has the smallest known range and is therefore the most vulnerable, a status that is reflected in the species having been designated a Totally Protected Species in Sarawak. Confirmed records of C. cavernicolus are known only from Niah Cave, located in an isolated limestone block known as the Gunung Subis massif, approximately 13 km² in extent. The Niah Cave Gecko is presumed to be dependent on …

Low-Intensity Fire In Eastern White Pine A Supporting Role In Understory Diversity, Marjie Brown Jan 2009

Low-Intensity Fire In Eastern White Pine A Supporting Role In Understory Diversity, Marjie Brown

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Although high-intensity fire has been studied extensively in the forests of the Great Lakes region, the role of low-intensity fi re in stands of eastern white pine has received almost no study. For this project, scientists and mangers teamed up in northern Wisconsin to fi nd out what low-intensity fire means for white pine regeneration and fuels reduction. Surprisingly, there was no white pine regeneration in the burn units even fi ve years after fi re. But low-intensity prescribed fi re triggered a very strong understory response in terms of cover and richness, and can likely be used to support …

A Comparison And Validation Of Four Aquatic Macrophyte-Based Lake Assessment Techniques, John Brittenham

Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses

Lake macrophyte assemblages in northeast Indiana were examined to compare the ability of four aquatic macrophyte-based lake assessment techniques to detect lake quality using two independent measures of human disturbance and one measure of water quality. Study objectives were to test the relationship of the four lake assessment techniques to the three measures of human disturbance or water quality, test the relationship of the four lake assessment techniques to each other, and to determine which lake assessment technique was the most time and resource efficient. Lake vegetation was sampled using two techniques. The first was a rake-based, stratified, random sampling …

The Effect Of Environmental Service Learning On Empowerment For Responsible Environmental Behaviors In College Students, Derek W. Rosenberger Jan 2009

The Effect Of Environmental Service Learning On Empowerment For Responsible Environmental Behaviors In College Students, Derek W. Rosenberger

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The purpose of this study was to empirically test whether service learning pedagogy utilized in a general education science course is able to promote locus of control (LOC) for responsible environmental behavior (REB) and intent to act (ITA) upon REB. To measure this, two instruments, the Environmental Action Internal Control Inventory, developed by Smith-Sebasto and Fortner (1994) to test for LOC for REB, and Hsu’s (1997) ITA construct, developed to test for ITA upon REB were administered to two sections of a general education science course for non-science majors utilizing a nonequivalent pretest posttest control group design. This study shows …

The Role Of Landscape Connectivity In Assembling Exotic Plant Communities: A Network Analysis, Emily S. Minor, Samantha M. Tessel, Katharina A.M. Engelhardt, Todd R. Lookingbill Jan 2009

The Role Of Landscape Connectivity In Assembling Exotic Plant Communities: A Network Analysis, Emily S. Minor, Samantha M. Tessel, Katharina A.M. Engelhardt, Todd R. Lookingbill

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Landscape fragmentation and exotic species invasions are two modern-day forces that have strong and largely irreversible effects on native diversity worldwide. The spatial arrangement of habitat fragments is critical in affecting movement of individuals through a landscape, but little is known about how invasive species respond to landscape configuration relative to native species. This information is crucial for managing the global threat of invasive species spread. Using network analysis and partial Mantel tests to control for covarying environmental conditions, we show that forest plant communities in a fragmented landscape have spatial structure that is best captured by a network representation …

Options For National Parks And Reserves For Adapting To Climate Change, Jill S. Baron, Lance Gunderson, Craig D. Allen, Erica Fleishman, Donald Mckenzie, Laura A. Meyerson, Jill Oropeza, Nate Stephenson Jan 2009

Options For National Parks And Reserves For Adapting To Climate Change, Jill S. Baron, Lance Gunderson, Craig D. Allen, Erica Fleishman, Donald Mckenzie, Laura A. Meyerson, Jill Oropeza, Nate Stephenson

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Past and present climate has shaped the valued ecosystems currently protected in parks and reserves, but future climate change will redefine these conditions. Continued conservation as climate changes will require thinking differently about resource management than we have in the past; we present some logical steps and tools for doing so. Three critical tenets underpin future management plans and activities: (1) climate patterns of the past will not be the climate patterns of the future; (2) climate defines the environment and influences future trajectories of the distributions of species and their habitats; (3) specific management actions may help increase the …

Embracing Diversities In Elementary Schools : Stepping Outside The Classroom, Tera Yoder Jan 2009

Embracing Diversities In Elementary Schools : Stepping Outside The Classroom, Tera Yoder

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Teachers are currently challenged on how to include all students in one common and safe learning environment. Students don't come in cookie cutter patterns, but vary between cultures, genders, classes, race and ability. While children don't learn the same; a positive, common environment and learning atmosphere can contribute to learning of all children. Research shows that children that have difficulty in a traditional classroom setting can feel more comfortable in a less intense environment, like that outdoors. Many students with linguistic or physical barriers learn better actively doing rather than lectures, which gives great opportunity for science experimentations. These factors …

Bridging The Gap Between The Field And The Lab: Environmental Goods, Policy Maker Input, And Consequentiality, Christian A. Vossler, Mary F. Evans Jan 2009

Bridging The Gap Between The Field And The Lab: Environmental Goods, Policy Maker Input, And Consequentiality, Christian A. Vossler, Mary F. Evans

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper explores the criterion validity of stated preference methods through experimental referenda that capture key characteristics of a stated preference survey for a proposed environmental program. In particular, we investigate whether advisory referenda, where participant votes have either known or unknown weight in the policy decision, can elicit values comparable to that of a standard, incentive-compatible referendum. When participants regard their votes as consequential, our results suggest there is no elicitation bias with advisory referenda. For advisory referenda where participants view their votes as inconsequential, and for purely hypothetical referenda, we observe elicitation bias.

A Burkean Method For Analyzing Environmental Rhetoric, John Stewart Jan 2009

A Burkean Method For Analyzing Environmental Rhetoric, John Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The work of Kenneth Burke provides a method of rhetorical analysis that is useful in terms of bringing features of texts to the surface that are not readily apparent, such as how they produce identification in their audiences, and in revealing rhetorical factors related to but outside the text, for example the authors' motives. Burke's work is wide-ranging and open to many interpretations, so it can be difficult to apply. This study condenses some of his more important concepts into a simplified method which has several practical applications; it focuses on how Burke's theories can be applied to analyzing environmental …

The Promotion And Prevention Of Ahwahnee Water Principles For Resource Efficient Land Use In The Cities Of Ontario And San Bernardino, Melissa Danielle Miller Jan 2009

The Promotion And Prevention Of Ahwahnee Water Principles For Resource Efficient Land Use In The Cities Of Ontario And San Bernardino, Melissa Danielle Miller

Theses Digitization Project

This project will explore the environmental benefits of sustainable land use practices as defined in the Ahwahnee Water Principles for Resource Efficient Land Use. These principles identify resource efficient land use practices that local communities can implement. City ordinances contain barriers to prevent the implementation of Ahwahnee Water Principles. The city of Ontario's municipal code, New Model Colony General Plan, and several specific area plans as well as San Bernardino's general plan, municipal code, and University Hills Specific Plan were analyzed to identify preventions and promotions of these water principles. It was discovered both cities have high percentages in the …
