Understanding Undergraduates: What Does Phenomenography Tell Us About Learners, Clarence Maybee
Understanding Undergraduates: What Does Phenomenography Tell Us About Learners, Clarence Maybee
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
It has been ten years since Christine Bruce's (1997) Seven Faces of Information Literacy was published, sharing the results of her phenomenographic research project revealing how librarians and other higher educators understood information literacy. Bruce's research impacted the way we think about information literacy by providing us with an expanded definition derived from people's experience. Applied to undergraduate students, phenomenography provides a powerful tool for understanding how students experience information literacy. The results of the presenter's two research projects verifies what some of us may have realized intuitively –that often there is a gap between the student approach to finding …

A Sexier Literacy: Information Literacy Through Media Literacy, Shana M. Higgins, Sara L. Prahl
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
The similarities in scope and objectives between information literacy and media literacy education are remarkable. On the surface, each is concerned with issues of access, analysis, evaluation, and use or production. But even beyond these basic tenets, guiding learners toward critical thought, creative agency, ethical use and production of information, and civic empowerment are shared concerns. In fact, as we begin to work with the generation of students dubbed "Generation M" by the Kaiser Family Foundation, we will increasingly find the distinctions between information and media literacies breaking down. Generation M, or the media generation, has grown up steeped in …

And this challenge is not going away—new programs and fields of research are burgeoning across university campuses everywhere as scholars seek …
Lead Detection In Water: Using Hydroxyapatite And Atomic Absorption, Nicolas Cantarero
Lead Detection In Water: Using Hydroxyapatite And Atomic Absorption, Nicolas Cantarero
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Hydroxyapatite is a mineral that is very inexpensive, easily made, and binds well to lead. In this procedure its application will be paired with Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (Flame AA) to detect lead concentrations in water to ppb levels. While ppb concentrations of lead are too dilute to produce a response from the Flame AA by using Hydroxyapatite to concentrate lead molecules from a larger volume and dissolving the Hydroxyapatite into a smaller volume it may be able to produce a response. The method could provide an inexpensive, efficient, and accurate way to detect lead concentrations to the ppb level …

Using Geographically Weighted Regression Models To Analyze Crash Harm, Libin Zheng
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Society pays a high cost for collisions in terms of property damage, injuries and loss of life. This paper has two objectives. One is to examine various factors associated with harm caused by highway collisions. Both global OLS and local GWR models are provided to identify specific variables influencing crash harm. Another objective is to demonstrate the use of a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method in this complex safety problem, which can estimate models for each crash location and show spatial variation. The results show that the GWR model is a significant improvement on the OLS model; the test for …

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz
Numeracy
As an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor, quantitative reasoning (QR) risks falling through the cracks between the traditional “silos” of higher education. This article describes one strategy for developing a truly cross-campus QR initiative: leverage the existing structures of campus writing programs by placing QR in the context of argument. We first describe the integration of Carleton College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge initiative with the Writing Program. Based on our experience, we argue that such an approach leads to four benefits: it reflects important aspects of QR often overlooked by other approaches; it defuses the commonly raised objection that QR is …
