Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti Sep 2009

Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper presents a meta-analysis of the “cluster literature” contained in scientific journals from 1969 to 2007. Thanks to an original database we study the evolution of a stream of literature which focuses on a research object which is both a theoretical puzzle and an empirical widespread evidence. We identify different growth stages, from take-off to development and maturity. We test the existence of a life-cycle within the authorships and we discover the existence of a substitutability relation between different collaborative behaviours. We study the relationships between a “spatial” and an “industrial” approach within the textual corpus of cluster literature …

The Complications Of Colonialism For Gentrification Theory And Marxist Geography, Liza Kim Jackson Sep 2009

The Complications Of Colonialism For Gentrification Theory And Marxist Geography, Liza Kim Jackson

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Gentrification is often described metaphorically as a form of ‘colonization,’ however in this paper I argue that gentrification comprises one strategy in the continued historical colonization of Indigenous peoples in the Canadian context, and more specifically in the settler city of Toronto. I propose that the colonial relationalities, both symbolic and material that give rise to the settler city, persist as a discipline on poor and Indigenous bodies, spaces and lands, through the capitalist way of life. Colonial relationalities are again heightened through gentrifications role in Toronto’s strivings for global city status in a neo-imperialist global economy. Gentrification is based …

Developers, The State, And The Politics Of Private Property Rights, Donald Leffers Sep 2009

Developers, The State, And The Politics Of Private Property Rights, Donald Leffers

Journal of Law and Social Policy

This article uses a new institutionalist approach to investigate major land use conflicts and regional land use policy changes in the Toronto region that affected the property relations of land developers. Institutionalist approaches focus on the role of key actors, ideas, and strategies in influencing the trajectories of political institutions, and the confrontation of political and strategic maneuvering in the face of existing institutions and structures. Through comparison of the processes driving enactment of two major regional land use statutes—the Oak Ridge Moraine Conservation Act and the Greenbelt Act—this article pays close attention to the relationships between political actors and …

Retrieval Of Foliar Information About Plant Pigment Systems From High Resolution Spectroscopy, Susan L. Ustin, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Stéphane Jacquemoud, Michael Schaepman, Gregory P. Asner, John A. Gamon, Pablo Zarco-Tejada Sep 2009

Retrieval Of Foliar Information About Plant Pigment Systems From High Resolution Spectroscopy, Susan L. Ustin, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Stéphane Jacquemoud, Michael Schaepman, Gregory P. Asner, John A. Gamon, Pablo Zarco-Tejada

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Life on Earth depends on photosynthesis. Photosynthetic systems evolved early in Earth history and have been stable for 2.5 billion years, providing prima facie evidence for the significance of pigments in plant functions. Photosynthetic pigments fill multiple roles from increasing the range of energy captured for photosynthesis to protective functions. Given the importance of pigments to leaf functioning, greater effort is needed to determine whether individual pigments can be identified and quantified in vivo using high fidelity spectroscopy. We review recent advances in detecting plant pigments at the leaf level and discuss successes and reasons why challenges remain for robust …
