An Integrated Recording System Using An Asynchronous Pulse Representation, Sheng Feng Yen, Jie Xu, Manu Rastogi, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A neuronal recording system for brain-machine interfaces (BMI) based on asynchronous biphasic pulse coding is described. It demonstrates the first step in the development of a complete implanted wireless solution with fully integrated circuit architecture. A recording experiment comparing in parallel a commercial recording system (Tucker-Davis Technology (TDT)) and the UF's custom solution (FWIRE) is set up to compare performance. The novel aspect of the UF system is that the analog signal is represented by an asynchronous pulse train, which provides a low-power, low-bandwidth, noise-resistant means for coding and transmission. Taking advantage of neural firing features, the pulse-based approach uses …

Stimulus Reconstruction From The Biphasic Integrate-And-Fire Sampler, Alexander Singh Alvarado, José C. Príncipe, John G. Harris Oct 2009

Stimulus Reconstruction From The Biphasic Integrate-And-Fire Sampler, Alexander Singh Alvarado, José C. Príncipe, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An algorithm to recover the encoded stimulus from a biphasic integrate-and-fire model has been proposed using the sampling framework for local averages. The algorithm converges for sparse sampling sets, common in extracellular neural recordings. Moreover, the spike region can be recovered with up to 50 dB accuracy even though the instantaneous and overall pulse rates are below the Nyquist bound. ©2009 IEEE.

On The Construct Validity Of Stereotype Threat Measures: Some Possible Boundary Conditions, Andrea Jane Marsden Oct 2009

On The Construct Validity Of Stereotype Threat Measures: Some Possible Boundary Conditions, Andrea Jane Marsden

Dissertations

Since 1995, much research has focused on the negative effects that stereotype threat (ST) may have on task and test performance (e.g., Nguyen & Ryan, 2008). To date, however, no research has examined the underlying meaning of this construct in a manner precise enough to determine if it is indeed a unique and meaningful concept and any potential boundaries. Therefore, the main goal of the current research was to obtain a better understanding of what distinctions, if any, exist between ST and similar constructs. Using a factorial design and examining correlations among variables, measures of ST were compared to measures …

Intelligent Redesign: A Collaborative Approach To “Scientific Thinking”, Brandon Canfield Oct 2009

Intelligent Redesign: A Collaborative Approach To “Scientific Thinking”, Brandon Canfield

Faculty Journal Articles

As a multi-section Core Curriculum course required for all undergraduates of AUC, Scientific Thinking (SCI120) provides unique insight on a variety of issues faced throughout the liberal arts educational system. Scientific Thinking, part of the “Core of the Core,” is a course that many students may not choose to take. While AUC is known here and abroad as the region's premier English-language institution of higher learning, many students enter without a full appreciation for how or why that elite status depends on the liberal arts component of the education that is being offered. The instructors for this course are a …

Targeting Transfer In A Stellar Pbl Course For Pre-Service Teachers, Cindy E. Hmelo-Silver, Sharon J. Derry, Alan Bitterman, Natalie Hatrak Oct 2009

Targeting Transfer In A Stellar Pbl Course For Pre-Service Teachers, Cindy E. Hmelo-Silver, Sharon J. Derry, Alan Bitterman, Natalie Hatrak

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Helping students in the professions apply conceptual ideas to the problems of practice is a key goal of problem-based learning (PBL). Because PBL is organized around small, collaborative groups, scaling up PBL to large, heterogeneous classes poses significant challenges for implementation. This study presents a hybrid model that mixes online and face-to-face PBL. The STELLAR system was developed to support online and hybrid PBL courses for pre-service teachers. It allows PBL to be implemented in larger classes because its scaffolding capabilities allow a small number of facilitators to distribute their attention among multiple small groups. In a quasi-experimental study, we …

Storytelling As An Instructional Method: Definitions And Research Questions, Dee H. Andrews, Thomas D. Hull, Jennifer A. Donahue Oct 2009

Storytelling As An Instructional Method: Definitions And Research Questions, Dee H. Andrews, Thomas D. Hull, Jennifer A. Donahue

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The goal of this paper is to discuss the theoretical and empirical foundations of the use of storytelling in instruction. The definition of a “story” is given and four instructional methods are identified related to storytelling: case-based, narrative-based, scenario-based and problem-based instruction. The article puts forth descriptions of the four instructional methods above, describes several research issues, some foundational work and theories, and proposes a research agenda.

Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom Oct 2009

Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

"How could a country with more than 300 million illiterate people also have the kind of scientific human resources that bring some of the world's largest corporations to base their R&D labs in India?" (Tripathi, 2007, p.68). This question acknowledges the coexistence of two vastly different worlds within one country. On one hand, India is making significant progress on the path to becoming a developed country;one that can provide the basic fundamentals of living for its citizens while sustaining progressive economic growth; on the other hand, it must overcome challenges to this goal that relate to a crumbling infrastructure, poverty, …

Shaping The Dream: A Survey Of Post-World War Ii St. Petersburg, 1946-1963, Jon L. Wilson

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

St. Petersburg stood on the cusp of great change in 1946. Returning veterans sought jobs and housing, and St. Petersburg experienced its first major growth era since the real estate boom of the 1920s. The decade of the 1950s saw the city‘s population leap from 96,738 to 181,298, an 87 percent increase driven by boosters and national publicity about the city‘s leisurely ambience. Tract houses replaced remaining pockets of pasture and pine trees as subdivisions sprawled toward the city limits and beyond. On fertile truck-farming acreage called Goose Pond, developers built Central Plaza, a shopping center positioned to drain business …
