The case of Sigma Finance Corp1 was about the priority of payment under a Security Trust Deed for a structured investment vehicle (SIV). In essence, the key issue in the case was about whether debts due within the ‘realisation period’ after the occurrence of an ‘enforcement event’ should be paid ahead of other short-term creditors.

Ca-Sr-Zn-Si glasses have demonstrated excellent biocompatibility both in vitro using the MTT assay with L929 mouse fibroblast cells, and in vivo using healthy and ovariectomized female Wistar rats. However, the biological evaluation of the materials was performed on glass granules that were autoclaved, rather than γ-irradiated; the sterilisation procedure required prior to implantation of these materials in the human body. Given the fact that when a glass is exposed to ionizing radiation changes in its physical properties can take place, it is imperative to determine whether the structure of such glasses will be altered as a result of exposure to …

Muslim Women Leaders In The Ferghana Valley: Whose Leadership Is It Anyway?, Svetlana Peshkova
Muslim Women Leaders In The Ferghana Valley: Whose Leadership Is It Anyway?, Svetlana Peshkova
Journal of International Women's Studies
There are many geographic and historical examples of Muslim women leaders, yet questions about women’s ability to lead and the kinds of leadership women can assume are still a part of scholarly and public debates among Muslims. In this article, based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in the Ferghana Valley (Uzbekistan), I provide examples of Muslim women’s leadership and argue that in order to fully understand women’s leadership we need to question the assumption that men and women desire the same forms of leadership. A desire for leadership is not intrinsic to women (or humans in general) but is …
Islamic Feminism And Muslim Women’S Rights Activism In India: From Transnational Discourse To Local Movement - Or Vice Versa?, Nadja-Christina Schneider
Islamic Feminism And Muslim Women’S Rights Activism In India: From Transnational Discourse To Local Movement - Or Vice Versa?, Nadja-Christina Schneider
Journal of International Women's Studies
The very recent phenomenon called Islamic feminism receives quite a lot of attention from academia and media alike. Although it is basically a discourse whose strategy and praxis is primarily script related, there seems to be an overt tendency to equate Islamic feminism with an ideology for a transnational social or political movement. As a perceived singular movement, Islamic feminism is often distinguished from two other supposedly singular movements, namely “Muslim feminism” and “Islamist feminism.” With regard to India, however, these ideal types don’t seem to be very helpful as analytical categories, as the growing influence and reference to Islamic …
Claiming Their Space: Muslim Women-Led Networks And The Women’S Movement In India, Nida Kirmani
Claiming Their Space: Muslim Women-Led Networks And The Women’S Movement In India, Nida Kirmani
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Shah Bano case of the 1980s was a landmark in the discourse on ‘Muslim women’s rights’ in India. At this time, however, few Muslim women actually participated in the debates, which were dominated by male religious leaders and politicians or by ‘secular’ women’s groups, which had scant Muslim representation. Since the 1980s several Muslim-women led organisations have emerged in urban areas across the country, some of which have formed networks to advocate for Muslim women’s rights. This article looks at the emergence of two networks in particular, the Muslim Women’s Rights Network (MWRN) and the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan …
South Asian Muslim American Girl Power: Structures And Symbols Of Control And Self-Expression, Marcia Hermansen, Mahruq F. Khan
South Asian Muslim American Girl Power: Structures And Symbols Of Control And Self-Expression, Marcia Hermansen, Mahruq F. Khan
Journal of International Women's Studies
South Asian Muslim American (SAMA) girls studied ethnographically in Chicago and more broadly in the United States negotiate these three components (South Asian, Muslim, and American) of identity across the spheres of home, Islamic institutions, and the public “American” realm. Drawing on interviews and fieldwork at an Islamic school and within South Asian families and mosques, the authors illustrate how nascent “girl” power is evidenced in these contexts drawing on media representations, academic sources, and data drawn from participant observation. Sources of SAMA girls’ expressions of confidence and power are selective use of identity markers, increased mastery of Islamic knowledge, …
Visible Under The Veil: Dissimulation, Performance And Agency In An Islamic Public Space, Julie Billaud
Visible Under The Veil: Dissimulation, Performance And Agency In An Islamic Public Space, Julie Billaud
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper seeks to characterize new meanings attached to women’s veiling in an Islamic public space, drawing from observations, interviews and field notes collected among various women’s groups in Afghanistan. It is argued that while the chadari – or burqa, as the Western press miscalled it, using the Urdu denomination – has become the ultimate symbol of women’s oppression for Western audiences, it is necessary to take a closer look at its multiple and often contradictory uses and to contextualise the reasons for its maintenance, despite the downfall of the Taliban regime. Ethnographic research demonstrates that women who are attempting …
Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne
Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this paper I argue that the internally displaced Muslim women’s experience of displacement and their perception of new developments since the last round of peace initiative between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE are significantly different from their male counterparts in that the women find these experiences as empowering in some respects. The paper also evidence that this empowerment is differently experienced by women belonging to different social classes. Women have been identified as a problem body within the Muslim community and restrictions on Muslim women have been justified through discourses on family honor and frivolous women. The …
Polygamy Talk And The Politics Of Feminism: Contestations Over Masculinity In A New Muslim Indonesia, Sonja Van Wichelen
Polygamy Talk And The Politics Of Feminism: Contestations Over Masculinity In A New Muslim Indonesia, Sonja Van Wichelen
Journal of International Women's Studies
The political downfall of the Suharto administration in 1998 marked the end of the “New Order,” which was characterized by a 32-year period of authoritarian rule. Opening the way for democracy, it included the unlocking of Indonesian politics for the influence and participation of political Islam, which the New Order discouraged or banned. This shift led to a proliferation of Islamic issues in the public and political sphere. Many of them concerned issues of gender and have triggered profound debates about women’s rights and gender equality. This article examines one of these public concerns over “Islam and gender,” namely polygamy. …
Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam
Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this essay I offer some examples of reading feminist agency in Pakistan through an analysis of the poems of two of Pakistan’s preeminent feminist poets, Fahmida Riaz (b.1946) and Kishwar Naheed (b.1940). Rather than gesture to their poetry in a strategy of recuperation I contend that their powerful narratives compel us to reevaluate the parameters of contemporary feminist historiography and discourses of nationalism in South Asia. The poems of Fahmida Riaz and Kishwar Naheed are informed by a different set of paradigms about self and community (Islam) and at the same time reflect an archive (poetry) as crucial to …
Flowers, Queens, And Goons: Unruly Women In Rural Pakistan, Lubna N. Chaudhry
Flowers, Queens, And Goons: Unruly Women In Rural Pakistan, Lubna N. Chaudhry
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article focuses on girls and women perceived as deviant, difficult, or different by their communities in rural Punjab, even as it pluralizes and historicizes performances of rebellious, unruly selves. Specifically, the paper uses fieldwork interactions with girls who enjoyed wanderings in out-of-bound spaces, women who claimed a position of authority as headmistresses in village schools, and women who troubled the social imaginary through their acts of intimidation and involvement in local politics in order to examine defiance of gendered norms within the context of material, structural, and discursive realities framing individual lives. The analysis illustrates how regional differences among …
Historicizing Garment Manufacturing In Bangladesh: Gender, Generation, And New Regulatory Regimes, Shelley Feldman
Historicizing Garment Manufacturing In Bangladesh: Gender, Generation, And New Regulatory Regimes, Shelley Feldman
Journal of International Women's Studies
The contemporary Bangladesh economy is marked by sustained increases in women’s paid employment, a rise that began in the 1980s with complex and contradictory effects on the lives of women and communities. Today this increase in the numbers of employed women recasts gender relations and the gender and social contract, with wage employment leading to new sources of mobility and social, economic, and political freedoms for women, but also to contestation over rights and security, and, in some cases, to declines in women’s welfare. In this paper, I offer a window on the relationship between macro-economic changes in the Bangladesh …

Modeling Change Over Time: Conceptualization, Measurement, Analysis, And Interpretation, David Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The objective of this research report is to provide a state-of-the art review of the issues and methods relating to the modeling of change over time. The focus is on the quantitative assessment of the concept of change of time, which includes issues of conceptualization, measurement, data analysis, and interpretation. The rationale and motivation for this research originated from the author?s observations (specifically in the past decade in the capacities of journal editor, reviewer, symposium discussant, and workshop leader) on the need for a comprehensive and relatively non-technical reference on and integration of various issues in the modeling of change …

The Supreme Court Of Canada, Charter Dialogue And Deference, Rosalind Dixon
The Supreme Court Of Canada, Charter Dialogue And Deference, Rosalind Dixon
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
For those concerned about the democratic legitimacy of Charter review by Canadian courts, the idea of dialogue offers a promising midway path between the extremes of judicial and legislative supremacy. Current dialogue theory, however, largely fails to live up to this promise of compromise. Instead of distinguishing democratic worries associated with US style, strong-form judicial review, it largely endorses the legitimacy of such review. For dialogue to live up to its original promise, a new theory that more clearly distinguishes Canada from the United States is required. In this article, which offers a new theory of dialogue, the willingness of …

Mining Hierarchical Scenario-Based Specifications, David Lo, Shahar Maoz
Mining Hierarchical Scenario-Based Specifications, David Lo, Shahar Maoz
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Scalability over long traces, as well as comprehensibility and expressivity of results, are major challenges for dynamic analysis approaches to specification mining. In this work we present a novel use of object hierarchies over traces of inter-object method calls, as an abstraction/refinement mechanism that enables user-guided, top-down or bottom-up mining of layered scenario-based specifications, broken down by hierarchies embedded in the system under investigation. We do this using data mining methods that provide statistically significant sound and complete results modulo user-defined thresholds, in the context of Damm and Harel’s live sequence charts (LSC); a visual, modal, scenario-based, inter-object language. Thus, …

What Makes Categories Difficult To Classify?, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we try to predict which category will be less accurately classified compared with other categories in a classification task that involves multiple categories. The categories with poor predicted performance will be identified before any classifiers are trained and additional steps can be taken to address the predicted poor accuracies of these categories. Inspired by the work on query performance prediction in ad-hoc retrieval, we propose to predict classification performance using two measures, namely, category size and category coherence. Our experiments on 20-Newsgroup and Reuters-21578 datasets show that the Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the predicted rank of …

Trust Relationship Prediction Using Online Product Review Data, Nan Ma, Ee Peng Lim, Viet-An Nguyen, Aixin Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trust between users is an important piece of knowledge that can be exploited in search and recommendation.Given that user-supplied trust relationships are usually very sparse, we study the prediction of trust relationships using user interaction features in an online user generated review application context. We show that trust relationship prediction can achieve better accuracy when one adopts personalized and cluster-based classification methods. The former trains one classifier for each user using user-specific training data. The cluster-based method first constructs user clusters before training one classifier for each user cluster. Our proposed methods have been evaluated in a series of experiments …
Trust-Oriented Composite Services Selection And Discovery, Lei Li, Yan Wang, Ee Peng Lim
Trust-Oriented Composite Services Selection And Discovery, Lei Li, Yan Wang, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) environments, service clients interact with service providers for consuming services. From the viewpoint of service clients, the trust level of a service or a service provider is a critical issue to consider in service selection and discovery, particularly when a client is looking for a service from a large set of services or service providers. However, a service may invoke other services offered by different providers forming composite services. The complex invocations in composite services greatly increase the complexity of trust-oriented service selection and discovery. In this paper, we propose novel approaches for composite service representation, …
Static Validation Of C Preprocessor Macros, Andreas Saebjornsen, Lingxiao Jiang, Daniel Quinlan, Zhendong Su
Static Validation Of C Preprocessor Macros, Andreas Saebjornsen, Lingxiao Jiang, Daniel Quinlan, Zhendong Su
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The widely used C preprocessor (CPP) is generally considered a source of difficulty for understanding and maintaining C/C++ programs. The main reason for this difficulty is CPP’s purely lexical semantics, i.e., its treatment of both input and output as token streams. This can easily lead to errors that are difficult to diagnose, and it has been estimated that up to 20% of all macros are erroneous. To reduce such errors, more restrictive, replacement languages for CPP have been proposed to limit expanded macros to be valid C syntactic units. However, there is no practical tool that can effectively validate CPP …

Udel/Smu At Trec 2009 Entity Track, Wei Zheng, Swapna Gottipati, Jing Jiang, Hui Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We report our methods and experiment results from the collaborative participation of the InfoLab group from University of Delaware and the school of Information Systems from Singapore Management University in the TREC 2009 Entity track. Our general goal is to study how we may apply language modeling approaches and natural language processing techniques to the task. Specically, we proposed to find supporting information based on segment retrieval, to extract entities using Stanford NER tagger, and to rank entities based on a previously proposed probabilistic framework for expert finding.

Minimum Latency Broadcasting In Multiradio, Multichannel, Multirate Wireless Meshes, Junaid Qadir, Chuntung Chou, Archan Misra, Joo Ghee Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of minimizing the worst-case broadcast delay in multi-radio multi-channel multi-rate (MR2-MC) wireless mesh networks (WMN). The problem of 'efficient' broadcast in such networks is especially challenging due to the numerous interrelated decisions that have to be made. The multi-rate transmission capability of WMN nodes, interference between wireless transmissions, and the hardness of optimal channel assignment adds complexity to our considered problem. We present four heuristic algorithms to solve the minimum latency broadcast problem for such settings and show that the 'best' performing algorithms usually adapt themselves to the available radio interfaces and channels. We also study …
