“You‟Re Going To Hollywood!”: Gender And Race Surveillance And Accountability In American Idol Contestant‟S Performances, Amanda Leblanc Jan 2009

“You‟Re Going To Hollywood!”: Gender And Race Surveillance And Accountability In American Idol Contestant‟S Performances, Amanda Leblanc

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines how the reality competition television program American Idol serves to reinforce gendered, racialized and heteronormative stereotypes, particularly for female contestants. Through its "democratic" style of public audience voting, those competitors who not only sing well, but also perform their gender and race to standards which have been deemed by the judges to be appropriate mainstream American culture, prove to be the most successful on the program. Through a content analysis of the show's first four seasons, I find that those female contestants who begin their tenure in the contest by fitting into categories which would be considered …

Portland Public Schools Enrollment Forecasts, 2008-09, Based On October 2007 Enrollments, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Vivian Siu, Risa Proehl, Richard Lycan, George C. Hough Jr.

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The Enrollment Forecasts in this report were prepared in Spring 2008, based on historic enrollment data from Fall 2007 and previous years. However, the entire report was not ready for publication until after the Fall 2008 enrollment data became available. This preface briefly addresses the district-wide trends observed in Fall 2008 and evaluates the forecasts in the short term. The next report will include more analysis of enrollment trends with respect to area demographics and trends within sub-areas such as high school clusters. In Fall 2008, Portland Public Schools (PPS) enrolled 45,024 students in grades K-12, only 59 fewer students …

The Founder's Vision & Its Influence On The Outcomes Of High Tech Start-Up Companies, Reginald J. Murray Jan 2009

The Founder's Vision & Its Influence On The Outcomes Of High Tech Start-Up Companies, Reginald J. Murray

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact of sustaining, changing or disregarding the founder's vision on the outcomes of Venture Funded High Tech Start-up Companies (VFSCs). The motivation for the study was to provide knowledge that would enable Venture Capital (VC) investors to enhance their investment portfolio success rates. A model (VFSC Success - Failure continuum) was developed and introduced to provide a framework for the study. This model broke the universe of VFSC companies into two groups; those that have had their fates decided, namely Super-successes, Successes and Failures and those whose fate remained to be decided, namely Projected Successes and …

Landcover Change And Population Dynamics Of Florida Scrub-Jays And Florida Grasshopper Sparrows, David Breininger Jan 2009

Landcover Change And Population Dynamics Of Florida Scrub-Jays And Florida Grasshopper Sparrows, David Breininger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I confronted empirical habitat data (1994-2004) and population data (1988-2005) with ecological theory on habitat dynamics, recruitment, survival, and dispersal to develop predictive relationships between landcover variation and population dynamics. I focus on Florida Scrub-Jays, although one chapter presents a model for the potential influence of habitat restoration on viability of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. Both species are unique to Florida landscapes that are dominated by shrubs and grasses and maintained by frequent fires. Both species are declining, even in protected areas, despite their protected status. I mapped habitat for both species using grid polygon cells to quantify population potential …

Validation Of Inverse Seasonal Peak Mortality In Medieval Plagues, Including The Black Death, In Comparison To Modern Yersinia Pestis-Variant Diseases, Mark R. Welford, Brian H. Bossak Jan 2009

Validation Of Inverse Seasonal Peak Mortality In Medieval Plagues, Including The Black Death, In Comparison To Modern Yersinia Pestis-Variant Diseases, Mark R. Welford, Brian H. Bossak

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

Background: Recent studies have noted myriad qualitative and quantitative inconsistencies between the medieval Black Death (and subsequent ‘‘plagues’’) and modern empirical Y. pestis plague data, most of which is derived from the Indian and Chinese plague outbreaks of A.D. 1900615 years. Previous works have noted apparent differences in seasonal mortality peaks during Black Death outbreaks versus peaks of bubonic and pneumonic plagues attributed to Y. pestis infection, but have not provided spatiotemporal statistical support. Our objective here was to validate individual observations of this seasonal discrepancy in peak mortality between historical epidemics and modern empirical data.

The Underrepresentation Of Women In Interscholastic Sport Leadership: A Qualitative Study On The Effects Of Role Incongruity, Dana Massengale Jan 2009

The Underrepresentation Of Women In Interscholastic Sport Leadership: A Qualitative Study On The Effects Of Role Incongruity, Dana Massengale

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to investigate the underrepresentation of women in interscholastic sport leadership positions by analyzing perceptions of state association administrators and athletic directors of the function, if any, that role congruity theory plays in the underrepresentation women. Previous research has examined potential causes for this underrepresentation but no previous study had examined this phenomenon from a prejudice toward women in a leadership role perspective. Data were collected through indepth, semi-structured interviews involving nine women leaders in interscholastic athletics. The criteria for participation placed them into one of three categories: (1) participants who were currently working as …

Cross-Cultural Stories Of Race And Change, Eloise D (Kitty) Oliver Jan 2009

Cross-Cultural Stories Of Race And Change, Eloise D (Kitty) Oliver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A progressive discourse on race is impeded by several factors: debates on the reality or unreality of the term race itself; discussions of ethnicity that tend to marginalize a discussion of race; the view by majority members of society that race is a topic for discussion principally by minorities; and the lack of models for non-confrontational public conversations on the subject. In the process, a discussion of racial change rarely enters the discourse beyond brief responses in opinion polls. This study proposed the Race and Change Dialogue Model to facilitate the exploration of how race operates in society on an …
