City Level Development New Key To Successful Development, Gina Herron Apr 2009

City Level Development New Key To Successful Development, Gina Herron

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Development is one of the most debated issues in political science today. There has never been a clear consensus reached on what is one successful path to developmental success for nations to follow. Organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and already developed nations have long touted a policy based on rapid privatization, which has been often referred to as shock therapy.

During this current period of globalization it has never been more important for underdeveloped nations to successfully move towards development, in order for those nations to not be left behind in an ever increasing …

"Which Way To The Honky-Tonk?" An Analysis Of The Bakersfield And Nashville Sounds, Matthew Arnold Apr 2009

"Which Way To The Honky-Tonk?" An Analysis Of The Bakersfield And Nashville Sounds, Matthew Arnold

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to analyze the development of the Nashville and Bakersfield sounds in the 1950s and 1960s through the lens of space. I will examine the role class plays in country music by examining the places in which it developed. Beginning with a historical perspective of the music, I will show that a middle-class outlook controlled labeling of the music. While the early country music industry professed to "discover" the sounds of rural America, this sound was only allowed to be expressed if it conformed to corporate interests.

With the advent of the honky-tonk bar, the …

Fantasies Of Metal And Wires: Battling Corporate Hegemony And The Achievement Of Posthuman Masculinity In Recent Superhero Cinema, Joseph J. Cook Apr 2009

Fantasies Of Metal And Wires: Battling Corporate Hegemony And The Achievement Of Posthuman Masculinity In Recent Superhero Cinema, Joseph J. Cook

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During the summer of 2008 many movies were released with superhero protagonists. Combining textual readings and theoretical accounts to provide a phenomenological analysis of the representation of the counter-hegemonic struggle against corporate control and the achievement of posthuman masculinity in these recent superhero films, this thesis compares and contrasts specific visual and thematic elements that consistently appear in four of these films: The Dark Knight, Wanted, Iron Man, and Speed Racer. Providing intertextual exploration of the cultural status of specific cinematic superheroes, this project explores possible relationships between culture, society, and cinema, treating popular superhero cinema …

Culture As A Mitigating Factor In The Perception Of Path-Goal Leadership Styles And Workgroup Effectiveness, Alison Rampersad Apr 2009

Culture As A Mitigating Factor In The Perception Of Path-Goal Leadership Styles And Workgroup Effectiveness, Alison Rampersad

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Sustaining a competitive edge in today's global business environment depends upon highly effective levels of teamwork from within an organization. During the last few decades, there has been a continuing trend of flattening or compressing the organizational hierarchy and depending on groups of employees working together as units, or workgroups, in a variety of industries. Corporate stockholders and stakeholders tend to consider workgroups an effective way to improve various aspects of organizational performance.

With the advent of the borderless organization, the workgroup has emerged as a significant entity involved in decision-making; project planning, design and implementation; inter-departmental endeavors; and other …

Trashing The Past: Butch And Femme Labels In The Lesbian Community, Nicole Donia Apr 2009

Trashing The Past: Butch And Femme Labels In The Lesbian Community, Nicole Donia

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Since the 1970‘s, there has been an ongoing argument within the lesbian community over whether the genders butch and femme should be rejected or embraced. Some lesbian feminists and now queer theorists have gone to great lengths to convince lesbians to reject the labels of butch and femme. They claim that lesbians of the past were forced into these gender roles because of the necessity to conform to a heterosexist society. On the other hand, scholars of gay and lesbian cultural studies oppose the rejection of these genders based on the importance they have played in lesbian history. After a …

Ghost Dances: A Trans-Movement Manifesto, Susan Stryker Apr 2009

Ghost Dances: A Trans-Movement Manifesto, Susan Stryker

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Several things coincided to shape the space from which this lecture emerged. The first was an email from a list I'm on, soliciting creative, artistic responses to climate change. The second was a call for proposals for a symposium on "subversive imaginaries." The third, an ongoing conversation with a dancer friend about critical embodiment practices. Fourth, the tangle of thoughts sorting themselves out into various bits of prose and syllabi then being demanded by editors and administrators. Fifth, the backdrop of an historical presidential election soliciting us all to dwell upon "the fierce urgency of now." And finally, the call …

Digital Curation Vignettes: Personal, Academic, And Organizational Digital Information, Joan E. Beaudoin, Maria Esteva, Andrea Japzon

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This panel presents variations on the theme of digital curation by examining the digital information management and preservation practices of three different populations. Personal digital information management, personal collections transferred to institutional repositories, and a digital archiving case in a private organization, offer a wide view of the types of contexts in which digital material is being produced “in the wild.” Across the cases we found that digital record-keeping and preservation practices are not well understood or established, and that a vast amount of digital content created currently is at risk. Other issues, such as an individual’s perception of digital …

Group-Conflict Resolution: Sources Of Resistance To Reconciliation, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Apr 2009

Group-Conflict Resolution: Sources Of Resistance To Reconciliation, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Scholarly Publications

In the past few years a number of scholars in a variety of intellectual disciplines have contributed to a better understanding of dyadic conflicts and their resolution. In particular, sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, lawyers, and others have explored the dynamics of apology and its role in deescalating disputes and promoting forgiveness and reconciliation. Furthermore, we have a better understanding today of the benefits to individuals from forgiveness and reconciliation. Victims who are able to forgive their transgressors have better psychological and physical health and lead richer lives.2 Because lawyers tend to focus their attentions on legal disputes, a growing body of …

Eligibility, Recruitment, And Retention Of African Americans With Severe Mental Illness In Community Research, Michelle Hampton, Mary White, Linda Chafetz

Faculty Publications

Data that addresses severely mentally ill (SMI) African Americans (AAs) likelihood to participate in clinical research is limited. This study’s purpose was to determine if differences exist between races regarding eligibility, recruitment, and retention in a community-based clinical trial. The sample included 293 participants. Data sources included clinical records and interviews. Logistic regression was used for analysis. AAs were as likely to participate and to complete followup interviews as Whites. In contrast to studies about non-mentally ill AAs, AAs with SMI appeared to be as willing to consent to and to remain in clinical research studies as Whites.

A Trans-Holocene Archaeological Record Of Guadalupe Fur Seals (Arctocephalus Townsendi) On The California Coast, Torben Rick, Robert Delong, Jon Erlandson, Todd Braje, Terry Jones, Douglas Kennett, Thomas Wake, Phillip Walker

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus townsendi) were decimated by 19th century commercial sealers in the northeastern Pacific and thought to be extinct until 1928 when commercial fishermen caught two adult males at Isla de Guadalupe from a group of up to 60 adults and pups (Wedgeforth 1928, Huey 1930). These two animals were brought to the San Diego Zoo, prompting several zoological expeditions to Isla de Guadalupe in the 1930s and 1940s, but none successfully located Guadalupe fur seals. In 1949, a single male was seen on San Nicolas Island, California (Bartholomew 1950), and in 1954, a small breeding …

Ethnic Quilting Traditions In Magazine Articles 1900–1980, Colleen Hall-Patton Apr 2009

Ethnic Quilting Traditions In Magazine Articles 1900–1980, Colleen Hall-Patton

4th Biennial Symposium of the International Quilt Museum: Proceedings

Quilting, while often seen as a quintessentially American art form, has a long history throughout the world. Americans’ exposure to other traditions has been intermittent, but reflects other trends in the study of ethnic arts. In the 1950s, interest in folk art overlapped with interest in ethnic art as both create an exotic “other” to readers. Before 1960, that “other” was primarily Hawaiian and European. The 1960s added Cuna molas, and the 1970s saw an explosion of interest in worldwide quilt traditions from Tibetan to Amish.

This paper is a content analysis of quilting traditions referenced in magazine articles from …

The Development Of Nationalism In The Indian Case, Sriram Madhusoodanan Apr 2009

The Development Of Nationalism In The Indian Case, Sriram Madhusoodanan

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

Narratives, particularly historical narratives, frame our identities: they tell the story of our origins and provide us with direction to guide future action. Considering the numerous movements they have fostered in past 200 years, few identities have been as powerful a motor for social change or emerged as loudly on the world stage as national identities. In this context, India presents a unique case. In attempting to classify it, India could be labeled a multi‐nation state, due to the immense diversity of linguistic, cultural and ethnic groups that reside within it, each with its own particular historical narrative and myths …

Mental Health In Mali: An Analysis Of The Expression Of Major Depressive Disorder Across Different Cultures, Ashley Morris Apr 2009

Mental Health In Mali: An Analysis Of The Expression Of Major Depressive Disorder Across Different Cultures, Ashley Morris

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Introduction (excerpt) What other differences exist between illnesses across different cultures? Are the differences only found in the manifestation of symptoms or are there also biological differences? How does one conceptualize mental health issues, such as depression, here in Mali? Is there a stigma against mental health patients in Mali? What facilities, treatments, and medicines are available in Mali to treat mental disorder? After a little more background research I found that the topic of mental health in the developing world has been largely ignored until very recently. As cross-cultural studies in every academic discipline become increasingly more prevalent, anthropology …

The Balkans: Radical Conservatism And Desire, Dušan I. Bjelić Phd Apr 2009

The Balkans: Radical Conservatism And Desire, Dušan I. Bjelić Phd

Department of Criminology

This essay focuses on Balkan discourse geography as a hidden contingency of the intellectual work of Slavoj Žižek and Julia Kristeva. It takes into account the extent to which their self-proclaimed cosmopolitanism and universalism reflect disidentification with their Balkan origins. This disidentification alerts one to the unacknowledged centrality of Kristeva's and Žižek's Balkan origins to their writing about the region, and it also points to the Balkanist character of their intellectual production.
