Heirloom And Hybrid Tomato Yield And Quality In Organic And Conventional Production Systems, Diana J. Edlin Dec 2009

Heirloom And Hybrid Tomato Yield And Quality In Organic And Conventional Production Systems, Diana J. Edlin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the recent changes in the economy of Kentucky tobacco production, some producers are seeking an alternative crop that will provide similar economic gains to tobacco without needing more acreage. Tomatoes are an existing crop in Kentucky that have been declining in acreage over the last five years. There is evidence to suggest that, through niche and local marketing, tomatoes may be able to fill the void left by tobacco. However, there is concern among producers that they will lose yield and/or quality if they switch to one of these niche production systems or cultivars.

A two year study …

"All The Crises Reached A Concerted Crescendo" - The Arab Oil Embargo And Why The United States Was Unprepared For It, Jonathan D. Chilcote

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the 2008 spike in oil prices, oil companies and government officials were brought under close scrutiny as many Americans began to question why prices were able to rise so quickly. Americans had become accustomed to living in an economy where cheap oil was the norm, and demanded answers when that situation changed. What most of them did not know is that they were repeating history and mimicking the response to the 1973 oil embargo. Just as in 2008, the United States faced a crisis in 1973 with which it was unprepared to effectively cope. This thesis analyzes the reasons …

Mapp V. Ohio'S Unsung Hero: The Suppression Hearing As Morality Play, Scott E. Sundby Dec 2009

Mapp V. Ohio'S Unsung Hero: The Suppression Hearing As Morality Play, Scott E. Sundby

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The exclusionary rule is back under the judicial magnifying glass. Recent opinions, most notably by Justice Scalia, have sparked speculation that the Roberts Court is inclined to overrule Mapp v. Ohio and send Fourth Amendment disputes back to the realm of civil suits and police disciplinary actions. As the Court's rulings have made clear, any reevaluation of the exclusionary rule's future will be conducted under the now familiar rubric of whether the rule's "benefit" of deterring police misbehavior outweighs the "cost" of lost evidence and convictions.

This essay argues that if any such reevaluation does occur, the Court must take …

Connecting Youth And Communities: Customized Career Planning For Youth With Psychiatric Disabilities, Kim Brown, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Young people with psychiatric disabilities are significantly overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, tend to be employed sporadically if at all, and frequently have negative connections within and to their communities. Recent research conducted in Montana with youth who have developmental and/or physical disabilities demonstrates the effectiveness of using a customized career planning model to increase linkages to resources and access to community- based employment. Side benefits include improved self-esteem and positive community connections. The customization model holds promise as a way to reduce the risk factors young people with psychiatric disabilitiesf ace and increase the resiliency factors that can …

An Efficient Time-Bound Hierarchical Key Assignment Scheme With A New Merge Function: A Performance Study, Rajasree Shyam

Computer Science Graduate Projects and Theses

The advent of digital age has resulted in more television consumers switching to Digital TV with considerable improvement in image quality and ease-of-use. Consumers are able to select and view television programs and channels of choice by using a pay-per-use model or streaming video from their computer terminals. In all these use cases, the media provider requires a means by which they can restrict the consumers from watching selected programs for a pre-approved temporal interval. The consumer needs to be prevented access to certain pay-per-use channels and programs upon expiry of this pre-approved access. This necessitates the media provider to …

Reading & Writing Health: Nurses' Experience Of Patients' Health Literacy, Susan Herrgott Dec 2009

Reading & Writing Health: Nurses' Experience Of Patients' Health Literacy, Susan Herrgott

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The ability to read, understand, and act appropriately on healthcare information directly affects an individual's ability to access services and successfully communicate with healthcare providers. This ability is called health literacy and it includes the skills patients need to communicate with providers, read medical information, adhere to treatments, and decide when and how to seek medical care. Most of the research around health literacy has focused on patients’ experiences. In order to fully understand the problem, though, the experience of providers needs to be understood, too. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into nurses’ experience of patient …

Detection And Measurement Of Water Stress In Vegetation Using Visible Spectrum Reflectance, Arthur Zygielbaum Dec 2009

Detection And Measurement Of Water Stress In Vegetation Using Visible Spectrum Reflectance, Arthur Zygielbaum

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

At any scale, from a single microbe to the planet that nurtures us, water defines our place in the universe. It provides the hydraulic forces needed to give plants structure, and the medium enabling photosynthesis, the basis for most life on Earth, to occur. Knowledge of plant water status is vital to understanding the state or condition of vegetation, information which is essential to disciplines as diverse as agriculture, geography, and climatology. Non-destructive and remote sensing of plant water status allows the gathering of such information across wide geographic extents and over long periods of time. Monitoring vegetation remotely requires …

The Valuation Implications Of Sales Growth In Start-Up Ventures, Ilanit Gavious, Dafna Schwartz Dec 2009

The Valuation Implications Of Sales Growth In Start-Up Ventures, Ilanit Gavious, Dafna Schwartz

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We examine whether and how investors' reliance on financial information is affected by the rate of sales growth of a start-up venture. We find that investors discern between firms by the extent to which their products are adopted by the market. For firms that failed to increased their sales since IPO, investors preceive financial data as not providing relevant or predictive information for investment decision making. In contrast, investors seem to rely heavily on financial information provided by firms presenting a continuous increase in sales. We suggest that investors may perceive firms with a continuous increase (decrease) in sales as …

Risk Aversion, Entrepreneurial Risk, And Portfolio Selection, Hongyan Fang, John R. Nofsinger Dec 2009

Risk Aversion, Entrepreneurial Risk, And Portfolio Selection, Hongyan Fang, John R. Nofsinger

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Do entrepreneurs consider the risk of their business equity when making investment portfolio allocations? Many people compartmentalize different risks and consider them separately, called mental accounting. Alternatively, the risk substitution hypothesis suggests that entrepreneurs would offset high business income risk by selecting a more conservative investment portfolio. we examine these two hypotheses which have implications for measuring risk tolerance. We find that households with proprietary income show higher risk tolerance than non-entrepreneurs do. Further evidence suggests that a comprehensive measure of relative risk aversion that incorporates households' business income is more reliable and more consistent with their reported risk preference …

Clustering Research Activity In Communication Doctoral Programs: Relationship Of Publication Productivity And Department Size, Timothy D. Stephen Dec 2009

Clustering Research Activity In Communication Doctoral Programs: Relationship Of Publication Productivity And Department Size, Timothy D. Stephen

Communication Faculty Scholarship

This study extends previous work relating contemporary approaches to the comparative evaluation of doctoral programs, focusing on the 2004 NCA study (based on perceptual measures) and the ComVista system (based on publication patterns). Coding and analyzing the ComVista data for topical content revealed 17 clusters of intellectual activity in the field, grouped doctoral programs into nine categories of publication frequency and distribution, and found substantial prediction of NCA ratings for perceived quality of doctoral faculty. Results suggest that these data are principally based on peer perceptions of faculty publication activity, that more specialized publication activities tend to be perceived more …

Proposed Framework For Understanding Information Security Culture And Practices In The Saudi Context, Mohammed Alnatheer, Karen Nelson

Australian Information Security Management Conference

An examination of Information Security (IS) and Information Security Management (ISM) research in Saudi Arabia has shown the need for more rigorous studies focusing on the implementation and adoption processes involved with IS culture and practices. Overall, there is a lack of academic and professional literature about ISM and more specifically IS culture in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the overall aim of this paper is to identify issues and factors that assist the implementation and the adoption of IS culture and practices within the Saudi environment. The goal of this paper is to identify the important conditions for creating an information …

Disproportionate Minority Contact In Maine: Dmc Assessment And Identification, Becky Noréus, Teresa A. Hubley, Michael Rocque

Justice Policy

Executive Summary:

Since 1998, the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act has required all states that receive formula grant program funding to determine whether the proportion of minority youth in confinement exceeds their proportion of the population, and, if so, to develop corrective strategies. In 1992, Congress elevated this issue to a “core requirement” of the JJDP Act. In 2002, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention expanded the requirement to include the proportion of minorities at each key decision point, and not just at confinement. This allows a broader examination of how minority groups are treated in the …

The Effects Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth: An Exploratory Study., Bodi Li Dec 2009

The Effects Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth: An Exploratory Study., Bodi Li

Communication ETDs

Although marketing and advertising professionals tend to believe the effectiveness of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), few studies have confirmed the eWOM effects. Therefore, this study conducted a test of eWOM effects in a laboratory experiment. Subjects were randomly assigned into three groups: advertising only, advertising and positive eWOM, and advertising and negative eWOM. Results showed that eWOM possesses influences on consumers attitudes and purchase intentions, however the effects of positive eWOM are very limited. Results also showed that the effects of negative eWOM carry more weight than positive eWOM. This study also uncovered the complexity of eWOM effects. It is likely …

Review Of The Evidence Used In The Description Of Currently Recognized Cetacean Subspecies, William F. Perrin, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Dec 2009

Review Of The Evidence Used In The Description Of Currently Recognized Cetacean Subspecies, William F. Perrin, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We reviewed the subspecies listed by Rice (1998) and those described since (a total of 49, in 19 species), assessing them against the criteria recommended by the recent Workshop on Shortcomings of Cetacean Taxonomy in Relation to Needs of Conservation and Management (Reeves et al., 2004). The workshop suggested that the subspecies concept can be construed to cover two types of entities: a) lineages diverging but not quite far along the continuum of divergence (still having significant gene flow with another lineage or lineages) to be judged as species, and b) lineages that may well be species but for which …

Hawaii Macadamia Nut Company- A Case Study, George H. (Jody) Tompson, Dan Verreault, Holly B. Tompson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Owners of the Hawaii Macadamia Nut Company (HMNC) are facing an expansion opportunity. A land owner has preperty available that would enable the HMNC to expand its acreage and revenue by about 20%. To fully consider this opportunity the owners must decide 1)whether the expansion is strategically and financially viable, 2)how to raise capital to finance the expansion, and 3)whether they have the skills to manage the company's growth during expansion. This is a case study describing a real company facing a real opportunity in Hawaii. The names of the company and its principals have been disguised.

Thermodynamically Consistent Large Deformation Constitutive Model For Glassy Polymers, Ashwani Kumar Goel Dec 2009

Thermodynamically Consistent Large Deformation Constitutive Model For Glassy Polymers, Ashwani Kumar Goel

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Polycarbonate(PC), like most glassy polymers when undergoing large deformations exhibits a very complex thermo-mechanical response. We look at PC as a model glassy polymer and examine its response to changes in loading rate, loading direction and temperature. We show that plastic flow in compression is accompanied by a change in the elastic response of PC from isotropic to anisotropic. This provides the necessity to introduce a new modeling method that can capture these changes. A finite deformation plasticity like thermodynamically consistent model is developed to capture this and the observed rate and temperature dependence. For this modeling method, we need …
