The Powdery Mildew Resistance Gene Ren1 Co-Segregates With An Nbs-Lrr Gene Cluster In Two Central Asian Grapevines, Courtney Coleman, Dario Copetti, Guido Cipriani, Sarolta Hoffmann, Pál Kozma, László Kovács, Michele Morgante, Raffaele Testolin, Gabriele Di Gaspero

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Background: Grape powdery mildew is caused by the North American native pathogen Erysiphe necator. Eurasian Vitis vinifera varieties were all believed to be susceptible. REN1 is the first resistance gene naturally found in cultivated plants of Vitis vinifera.

Results: REN1 is present in 'Kishmish vatkana' and 'Dzhandzhal kara', two grapevines documented in Central Asia since the 1920's. These cultivars have a second-degree relationship (half sibs, grandparent-grandchild, or avuncular), and share by descent the chromosome on which the resistance allele REN1 is located. The REN1 interval was restricted to 1.4 cM using 38 SSR markers distributed across the locus and the …

The Acidic Domains Of The Toc159 Chloroplast Preprotein Receptor Family Are Instrinsically Disordered Protein Domains, Lynn G.L. Richardson, Masoud Jelokhani-Niaraki, Matthew D. Smith

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The Toc159 family of proteins serve as receptors for chloroplast-destined preproteins. They directly bind to transit peptides, and exhibit preprotein substrate selectivity conferred by an unknown mechanism. The Toc159 receptors each include three domains: C-terminal membrane, central GTPase, and N-terminal acidic (A-) domains. Although the function(s) of the A-domain remains largely unknown, the amino acid sequences are most variable within these domains, suggesting they may contribute to the functional specificity of the receptors.

Results: The physicochemical properties of the A-domains are characteristic of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Using CD spectroscopy we show that the A-domains of two Arabidopsis Toc159 …

Highly Nitrated Cyclopropanes As New High Energy Materials: Dft Calculations On The Properties Of C3H6−N(No2)N (N=3–6), Aloysus K. Lawong, David W. Ball Dec 2009

Highly Nitrated Cyclopropanes As New High Energy Materials: Dft Calculations On The Properties Of C3H6−N(No2)N (N=3–6), Aloysus K. Lawong, David W. Ball

Chemistry Faculty Publications

As part of a continuing study of new potential high energy materials, here we present results of calculations on cyclopropane molecules with three or more nitro groups. DFT calculations suggest that all molecules can exist as minimum-energy stationary states. Energy calculations indicate that some nitrocyclopropanes have a specific enthalpy of decomposition in excess of 8kJg−1, suggesting that they be explored as new potential high energy materials.

Theory Of Thermal Conductivity In Extended-S State Superconductors: Application To Ferropnictides, V. Mishra, A. Vorontsov, P. J. Hirschfeld, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

Within a two-band model for the recently discovered ferropnictide materials, we calculate the thermal conductivity assuming general superconducting states of A1g (" s -wave") symmetry, considering both currently popular isotropic "sign-changing" s states and states with strong anisotropy, including those which manifest nodes or deep minima of the order parameter. We consider both intraband and interband disorder scattering effects, and show that in situations where a low-temperature linear- T term exists in the thermal conductivity, it is not always "universal" as in d -wave superconductors. We discuss the conditions under which such a term can disappear, as well as how …

Fagerstrom Test For Nicotine Dependence Vs Heavy Smoking Index In A General Population Survey, M. Pérez-Ríos, M. I. Santiago-Pérez, B. Alonso, A. Malvar, X. Hervada, Jose De Leon

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) is used for assessing nicotine dependence. A shorter test derived from the FTND used for the general population is the Heavy Smoking Index (HSI) (six questions vs. two). The objective of this study is to compare the validity of the HSI versus the FTND.

METHODS: A survey of tobacco use in the general population was carried out in the northern Spanish region of Galicia using both the FTND and the HSI to study a representative sample of 1655 daily smokers. The HSI was compared with the FTND, considered the gold standard. Measures …

The Impact Of Self-Control Exercises On The Performance Level Of Peaceful Basketball Aiming, Afaf Abdullah Al-Kateb, Fatima Abdel-Maleh, Zainab Qahtan

Modern Sport

Basketball requires players to exert maximum individual effort during high-level skill games, relying heavily on the mastery of basic skills and effective team coordination, especially when implementing tactical offensive or defensive strategies. Unlike other sports, basketball demands more from individual and team planning due to the complexity of its gameplay. This research focuses on the importance of self-control exercises—specifically mobile equilibrium training using a balancing wheelchair—as a means to enhance scoring performance, particularly in lay-up shots, which are among the most accurate forms of scoring in basketball. Given that high technical skill levels are essential for achieving game objectives and …

Differential Cross Sections And Spin Density Matrix Elements For The Reaction Γp→Pω, M. Williams, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.

Physics Faculty Publications

High-statistics differential cross sections and spin-density matrix elements for the reaction γp → pω have been measured using the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from threshold up to 2.84 GeV. Results are reported in 112 10-MeV wide c.m. energy bins, each subdivided into cos θωc.m. bins of width 0.1. These are the most precise and extensive ω photoproduction measurements to date. A number of prominent structures are clearly present in the data. Many of these have not previously been observed due to limited statistics in earlier measurements.

Modern Sport

Sport has advanced rapidly in recent years due to significant developments in the theories and principles of sports training science, along with the substantial technical and scientific progress in various related fields. One of the essential and vital skills in basketball is the jump shot, making it imperative for basketball coaches to focus on teaching, training, and developing the physical abilities of their players to perform this skill effectively. This focus contributes to creating a strong offensive team capable of scoring more points and, at times, compensating for weaknesses in defense. The aim of this study was to examine the …

Equalization Of Loudspeakers And Enclosed Sound Fields, Xi Chen Dec 2009

Equalization Of Loudspeakers And Enclosed Sound Fields, Xi Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Equalization of loudspeakers and enclosed sound fields has been a topic of considerable interest for decades. Confusion has often arisen among audio professionals regarding the feasibility of simultaneously equalizing a loudspeaker and the enclosed field (i.e., the “room”) it excites. Because of frustrations encountered in such efforts, some have advocated abandoning simultaneous equalization altogether. This dissertation discusses the drawbacks of this approach as well as traditional in situ equalization methods. It demonstrates that many problems with traditional equalization stem from the use of measured acoustic pressure at a discrete point in a sound field as the system output. The dissertation …
