Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger Jan 2009

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger

Articles

The diverse nature of the reviews included in this issue of Nutrition Research Reviews highlights a problem that is becoming increasingly acute for journal editors, namely that of finding suitable reviewers (especially for the more esoteric manuscripts) who are prepared to devote some of their time and expertise to this crucial task. Peer-review underpins the whole ethos of scientific journal publishing as we currently know it. Without it, readers have little guarantee that the published material is credible, which in turn casts the authors in a dubious light, and with them the editors and publishers of the journals; the whole …

The Role Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of A Cast Aluminum Alloy, Saumyadeep Jana Jan 2009

The Role Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of A Cast Aluminum Alloy, Saumyadeep Jana

Doctoral Dissertations

"Al-7Si-0.6Mg is one of the most important cast aluminum alloys because of its attractive mechanical properties and high castability. Microstructurally, the alloy consists of primary aluminum dendrites with eutectic Si particles in the interdendritic region. This makes the alloy quasi-brittle in nature which affects the ductility of the alloy to a great extent. In order to improve the ductility, the eutectic Si particles need to be refined which so far has been achieved by chemical and/or thermal modification. Friction stir processing (FSP) on the other hand can achieve the same through plastic deformation, and therefore replace the cast structure with …

A Study Of The Beneficial Role Of Thiol Antioxidant Supplementation In Various Forms Of Glutathione Deficiency, Linu Sara Abraham Jan 2009

A Study Of The Beneficial Role Of Thiol Antioxidant Supplementation In Various Forms Of Glutathione Deficiency, Linu Sara Abraham

Doctoral Dissertations

"Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathology of numerous disorders afflicting humans, ranging from neurodegenerative diseases, to cancer, and heavy metal toxicity. Scientists are on the constant lookout for new and better antioxidants that have the ability to slow, if not stop the harmful degenerative effects of free radicals in oxidative stress related disorders. Both synthetic and naturally occurring compounds are being constantly screened for their antioxidant properties. This study attempted to evaluate the abilities of a thiol antioxidant, N-Acetylcysteine amide (NACA), to protect cells from the harmful effects of glutathione depletion in two different models of oxidative …

Applications Of Sensor Arrays In Acoustic And Seismic Signal Processing, Peng Xie Jan 2009

Applications Of Sensor Arrays In Acoustic And Seismic Signal Processing, Peng Xie

Doctoral Dissertations

"This work investigates the applications of sensor arrays in the areas of acoustic and seismic signal processing. It comprises three papers.

The first paper explores the problem of blind source separation (BSS) for convolutive acoustic signals. It concentrates on the well known permutation and amplitude problems in frequency-domain BSS and proposes a new hybrid approach to solve them. This approach connects the separation processes across all frequency bins, and relies on a novel permutation control unit. This framework could greatly reduce computational load and improve separation performance. Synthesized and real-world experiments demonstrate its efficiency.

The second paper investigates a new …

Interference Effects Due To Projective-Target Nucleus Scattering In Single Ionization Of Molecular Hydrogen By 75 Kev Proton Impact, Jason S. Alexander Jan 2009

Interference Effects Due To Projective-Target Nucleus Scattering In Single Ionization Of Molecular Hydrogen By 75 Kev Proton Impact, Jason S. Alexander

Doctoral Dissertations

"Doubly-differential cross-sections for the single ionization of molecular hydrogen by 75 keV proton impact have been measured as a function of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss and compared to available theoretical models. Interference structures are directly observed in the scattering angular dependence of the DDCS. The phase angle appears to be most sensitive to the projectile angle but not as sensitive to the electron energy, suggesting that the projectile - target nucleus interaction plays a central role in the interference. The large-angle structures disappear at electron speeds near the projectile speed. This may be due to a focusing …

Design And Implementation Of An Asynchronous Null Convention Logic (Ncl) Fpga, Indira Priyadarshini Dugganapally Jan 2009

Design And Implementation Of An Asynchronous Null Convention Logic (Ncl) Fpga, Indira Priyadarshini Dugganapally

Masters Theses

"This Master’s thesis outlines the design of a completely asynchronous Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for implementing NULL Convention Logic (NCL) digital circuits. The proposed design uses four Configurable Logic Blocks (CLB), each of which in turn is designed using four Logic Elements (LE) to implement NCL logic function. Each LE can be configured to function as any one of the 27 fundamental NCL gates. A Logic Element is designed by concatenating a Look-Up-Table (LUT) with a pull-up pull-down transistor chain and a hysteresis loop. The interconnections and the switch box are designed using pass transistors and SRAM. In this …

A Phenomenographic Study Of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches To Problem Solving And Conceptualisation Of Knowledge., Laura Walsh Jan 2009

A Phenomenographic Study Of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches To Problem Solving And Conceptualisation Of Knowledge., Laura Walsh

Doctoral

This phenomenographic study presents a description of the approaches to problem solving and conceptualisation of physics knowledge of introductory physics students, specifically in the context of the Irish higher education system. Much research has been carried out that has shown that physics students are not developing the conceptual knowledge necessary to become adept problem-solvers. This may be due to the traditional physics education assumption that students will develop an understanding of the conceptual nature of physics by repetitively solving quantitative problems. However, research has shown that this is not the case and that education and the curriculum needs to explicitly …

Inductance Modeling And Extraction In Emc Applications, Clint Matthew Patton Jan 2009

Inductance Modeling And Extraction In Emc Applications, Clint Matthew Patton

Masters Theses

"Inductance has become a challenging problem for EMC engineers in many applications. Regardless of the application at hand, the first step remains the same; return to the physics and trace the current paths. IGBTs have become an important part in the design of power electronics because of their ability to switch fast and with stand high currents. Modules used for three phase motor drives often create problems when neglected parasitic components show themselves and interfere with the performance of the desired operation of a system. Many manufactures of these modules do not give out equivalent circuit modules and therefore leave …

Application Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) For Bridge Deck Condition Assessment: Using A 1.5 Ghz Ground-Coupled Antenna, Amos Wamweya

Masters Theses

"This study is a GPR-based assessment of three bridge decks, two with a hot bituminous wearing surface and one with a bare concrete slab. The primary objectives of this study were: 1) to assess the integrity of the three bridge decks using a 1.5 GHz ground-coupled GPR antenna, and 2) to evaluate the utility of the 1.5 GHz ground-coupled antenna for bridge deck investigations. Core control (chloride ion concentration data and core integrity data) and visual inspection were used as interpretive constraint. The acquired GPR data were interpreted, and two plan view maps were generated. One depicts the magnitude of …

Comparison Of Cotton Damage From Tarnished Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) And Southern Green Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Adults And Nymphs, F. R. Musser, K. S. Knighten, J. T. Reed Jan 2009

Comparison Of Cotton Damage From Tarnished Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) And Southern Green Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Adults And Nymphs, F. R. Musser, K. S. Knighten, J. T. Reed

Midsouth Entomologist

Tarnished plant bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae) and southern green stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) infest cotton and cause similar symptoms. To increase our understanding of the feeding preferences of these insects so that thresholds and management strategies for these species can be improved, southern green stink bug and tarnished plant bug adults and nymphs were caged on cotton plants containing both squares and bolls. At harvest, bolls were analyzed for lint yield and quality in relation to their position on the plant when infested. The five nodes immediately below the infested flower node (small bolls when infested) had fewer undamaged bolls on …

Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury--Trali: An Under Diagnosed Entity, Bushra Moiz, Hasanat Sharif, Fauzia Ahmad Bawany Jan 2009

Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury--Trali: An Under Diagnosed Entity, Bushra Moiz, Hasanat Sharif, Fauzia Ahmad Bawany

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a life-threatening complication of transfusion of blood and its components resembling acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or acute lung injury (ALI). TRALI is a particular form of ARDS that follows blood transfusion and is caused by donor-derived antibodies present in the transfused products, reacting with the recipients' blood cells, inducing release of inflammatory mediators thus compromising lung functions. Anti-HLA antibodies are the most frequently indicted inducers in this category. Literature search has not revealed any documented case of TRALI from Pakistan. This in no way implies that TRALI is non existent in this …

Nation-Building In The Penumbra: Notes From A Liminal State, Monica E. Eppinger Jan 2009

Nation-Building In The Penumbra: Notes From A Liminal State, Monica E. Eppinger

All Faculty Scholarship

The emergence of post-Socialist legal orders is reshaping some of the familiar terrain of comparative legal studies. This Article, invited as part of an effort to think about the topic of "What the Rest think of the West," reconsiders the vast legal re-codification projects that stand at the center of "nation-building" projects in formerly Socialist states. Such projects, and the rupture from which they emerge, challenge essentialist or static notions of identity and assumptions of where the West is or where the Rest begin. Anthropological concepts of "liminality" and "deixis" assist in understanding Ukrainian legal experts' thinking on legal reforms …

Arrow's Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie Jan 2009

Arrow's Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew T. Bodie

All Faculty Scholarship

In this essay, we contest one of the main arguments for restricting corporate board voting to shareholders. In justifying the limitation of the franchise to shareholders, scholars have repeatedly turned to social choice theory—specifically, Arrow’s theorem—to justify the exclusive shareholder franchise. Citing to the theorem, corporate law commentators have argued that lumping different groups of stakeholders together into the electorate would result in a lack of consensus and, ultimately, the lack of coherence that attends intransitive social choices, perhaps even leading the corporation to self-destruct. We contend that this argument is misguided. First, we argue that scholars have greatly overestimated …

Experimenting With Territoriality: Pan-European Music License And The Persistence Of Old Paradigms, Ana Santos Rutschman Jan 2009

Experimenting With Territoriality: Pan-European Music License And The Persistence Of Old Paradigms, Ana Santos Rutschman

All Faculty Scholarship

This article tells the story of what could have been an interesting and important shift in our approach to territoriality in the digitalized world. Europe had the chance to be the cradle of an unprecedented copyright experience – the creation of a quasi pan- continental license in the music field – but it might have lost that opportunity in the midst of non-binding recommendations and resolutions. This article argues this loss is due to the overreaching persistence of old paradigms, namely the principle of territoriality.

American Oresteia: Herbert Wechsler, The Model Penal Code, And The Uses Of Revenge, Anders Walker Jan 2009

American Oresteia: Herbert Wechsler, The Model Penal Code, And The Uses Of Revenge, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

The American Law Institute recently revised the Model Penal Code's sentencing provisions, calling for a renewed commitment to proportionality based on the gravity of offenses, the "blameworthiness" of offenders, and the "harms done to crime victims." Already, detractors have criticized this move, arguing that it replaces the Code's original commitment to rehabilitation with a more punitive attention to retribution. Yet, missing from such calumny is an awareness of retribution's subtle yet significant role in both the drafting and enactment of the first Model Penal Code (MPC). This article recovers that role by focusing on the retributive views of its first …
