Filipino Youth's Views On Mental Health, Angeles Guanzon-Lapena, Maria Caridad H. Tarroja, Maria Andrea S. Tirazona, Katrina Fernando
SDRC Publications
Many adults see adolescents as different, at times deviant and difficult to understand. People refer to youth's experiences as generally being part of development. Experiences of Filipino youth are seen as developmentally similar to the experiences of their peers in other parts of the world; Filipino youth experience problems and concerns typical of other teenagers. Whereas many past studies try to understand how adolescents' problems generally affect them in ways that need intervention to help them cope with and solve their problems, this research sought to find out how Filipino youth give meaning to, describe, and understand their problems, and …

The Youth Speak: Forms, Facilitators And Obstacles To Their Political Engagement, Madelene Sta. Maria, Jose Maria Diestro, Jr.
SDRC Publications
The voices of the Filipino youth in response to the current issues in society and in governance, such as corruption, child abuse, armed conflict or poverty, seem to remain subdued. For those who believe that it will be the purity and sincerity of these young people's voices that will rouse and provoke the rest of us into action for moral and social change, their silence is disturbing. Many see the silence to be caused by an underlying apathy and cynicism the youth have for present social and political institutions. Johnson in 2005, for example, documented the concern of scholars regarding …
Eco-Bio-Social Factors Of Vector Density-Developing Effective Eco-Bio-Social Factors Of Vector Density-Developing Effective Approaches To Dengue Control In The Philippines Approaches To Dengue Control In The Philippines, Jesusa Marco
SDRC Publications
Dengue is a disabling, acute infectious disease that is a leading cause of death among children in Southeast Asia. In the language used to describe how it is transmitted, a “vector,” or an organism that can carry a diseasecausing agent (i.e. a virus) without itself succumbing to the disease, passes on this agent to a “host,” or a living being (such as humans) that can be infected by the disease. This study, thus, looks into factors that contribute to sustaining vectors and how they can be managed to decrease the incidence of dengue in the Philippines. In the first phase …
Vision And Desire: Jim Morrison's Mythography Beyond The Death Of God, Ellen J. Greenham
Vision And Desire: Jim Morrison's Mythography Beyond The Death Of God, Ellen J. Greenham
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The poetry of Jim Morrison, as opposed to his lyric verse, has been the subject of little critical examination. The aim of this paper is to open up an understanding and interpretation of a mythographic landscape developed by Morrison in his response to existence in a demythologised western culture. Through the use of the Greek myth of Oedipus in its entirety, as opposed to the two most universally known events of the adult Oedipus' life, discussion here will attempt to demonstrate that Morrison developed a cohesive, holistic vision of the human condition of existence in the world, and presented a …
Training And Transfer Of Attentional Control In Older Adulthood, Anna Mackay-Brandt
Training And Transfer Of Attentional Control In Older Adulthood, Anna Mackay-Brandt
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Recent research in cognitive aging has brought renewed interest to a decades old question. Can cognitive skills be trained, and if so, how widely does that trained skill transfer? Previous research has demonstrated that older adults are able to improve their performance on laboratory cognitive tests and in some cases these benefits can transfer to other similar tests: e.g. Kramer et al., 2004). A few cases have demonstrated transfer to more distal outcomes: Willis et al., 2006). This area of research is still in an early stage, and reports are mixed with regard to the efficacy of cognitive training. These …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Medial Temporal Lobe Structure and Function by Meghana Sunil Karnik Doctor of Philosophy in Biology and Biomedical Sciences: Neuroscience) Washington University in St. Louis, 2009 Professor John G. Csernansky, Chairperson My main goal was to examine the relationship between brain structure and function, specifically medial temporal lobe structure and episodic memory, in various groups of subjects who had schizophrenia, were at risk for schizophrenia because of genetic and disease influences, or who were healthy, in order to explore the influence of genetic and disease influences on brain structure-function relationships. Most of what is known about the neural structures thought to …
A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo
A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Hyperthermia is a cancer treatment that elevates tissue temperature to 40 to 43oC. It would benefit from a non-invasive, safe, inexpensive and convenient thermometry to monitor heating patterns. Ultrasound is a modality that meets these requirements. In our initial work, using both prediction and experimental data, we showed that the change in the backscattered energy: CBE) is a potential parameter for TI. CBE, however, was computed in a straightforward yet ad hoc manner. In this work, we developed and exploited a mathematical representation for our approach to TI to optimize temperature accuracy. Non-thermal effects of noise and motion confound the …
Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Articles
The article critically examines H.L.A. Hart’s The Concept of Law, arguing that its foundational narrative of legal evolution relies on a mythological anthropology. Hart’s account of the transition from primitive to modern legal systems through secondary rules is revealed to be a myth that, while not historically accurate, conveys deeper truths about the nature of law and modernity. The analysis draws parallels between Hart’s mythography and Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, particularly in Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism, to explore how both thinkers conceptualize the origins of law as a shift from direct force to symbolic authority. The article contends …
Generation And Circuit Development Of Zebrafish Retinal Horizontal Cells, Philip Williams
Generation And Circuit Development Of Zebrafish Retinal Horizontal Cells, Philip Williams
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The construction of functional neuronal circuits requires proper coordination of many developmental processes. Neurons must be generated in the proper number and migrate to their mature locations within the nervous system. Upon completion and sometimes during neuronal migration, neurons must elaborate complex dendritic and axonal arbors and then form precise synaptic connections in the background of a plethora of possible synaptic partners. Glial cells must also establish specialized associations with a number of neuronal structures including synapses and axons. In order to create a detailed understanding of how a neuron progresses through all of these stages of development, I have …

This Article presents a legal theory of legal justification. It examines the elements of offense definitions and justification defensesor, more accurately, the conjunctions and disjunctions between these elements-to resolve a longstanding issue in the theory of legal punishment. The unjustified actor who believes she is justified seems to deserve an acquittal, while the justified actor who does not know he is justified seems to deserve conviction. But we face a dilemma: we seem to have to acquit both or convict both. This Article shows a principled way to rule the mistakenly unjustified actor within, and the mistakenly justified actor out …
Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Allosteric Communication In The Transcriptional Regulator Nikr, Michael Bradley
Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Allosteric Communication In The Transcriptional Regulator Nikr, Michael Bradley
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The Ni2+ and DNA binding protein NikR is involved in nickel regulation in Escherichia coli through transcriptional repression of the NikABCDE nickel permease. NikR is a homotetramer and each chain contains both a DNA binding ribbon-helix-helix: RHH) domain and a Ni2+ binding regulatory ACT: aspartokinase, chorismate mutase, TyrA) fold. Work herein combines computational modeling of NikR structure with experimental studies aimed at understanding allosteric communication between the ACT and RHH domains. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry shows a Ni2+ specific NikR conformational change relative to bound Cu2+, Co2+, and Zn2+. Concurrent coordination geometry and in vivo repressor function studies show that …

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao
The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Signal flow in the brain is not unidirectional; feedback represents a key element in neural signal processing. To address the question on how do neural feedback loops work in terms of synapses, microcircuitry, and systems dynamics, we developed a chick midbrain slice preparation to study and characterize one important feedback loop within the avian visual system: isthmotectal feedbackloop. The isthmotectal feedback loop consists of the optic tectum: OT) and three nucleus isthmi: Imc, Ipc and SLu. The tectal layer 10 neurons project to ipsilateral Imc, Ipc and SLu in a topographic way. In turn Ipc and SLu send back topographical: …

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin
Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Plato argues that a perfectly virtuous individual will not fear her own death, nor will she fear or grieve the death of a loved one. In Plato's ideal society, citizens are taught not to fear death and are prohibited from public manifestations of grief. It is by no means self-evident, however, that ridding oneself of the fear of death, even if possible, is ethically or psychologically beneficial. This dissertation examines why Plato thinks that the fear of death is morally inappropriate, why he believes it is nevertheless difficult to overcome, and why he thinks acquiring and sustaining the appropriate attitudes …
An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine
An Investigation Of Acetobacter Aceti N5-Carboxyaminoimidazole Ribonucleotide Mutase And Its Pure-Purk Operon, Charles Constantine
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Acetobacter aceti oxidizes ethanol to acetic acid. While the membrane-permeable acetic acid is toxic to many bacteria, A. aceti survives exposure to acetic acid by tolerating cytoplasmic acidification. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm suggests that proteins from A. aceti are unusually suited to function in an acidic environment. The ability to tolerate an acidic cytoplasm raises additional questions about biosynthetic pathways that employ acid-labile intermediates. To examine how A. aceti metabolism may have adapted to function under acidic conditions, a biosynthetic conversion involving an acid-labile metabolite has been selected for study. The enzyme N5-carboxyaminoimidazole ribonucleotide mutase: PurE) catalyzes …
A Quest For Meaning In Spontaneous Brain Activity - From Fmri To Electrophysiology To Complexity Science, Biyu He
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The brain is not a silent, complex input/output system waiting to be driven by external stimuli; instead, it is a closed, self-referential system operating on its own with sensory information modulating rather than determining its activity. Ongoing spontaneous brain activity costs the majority of the brain's energy budget, maintains the brain's functional architecture, and makes predictions about the environment and the future. I have completed three separate studies on the functional significance and the organization of spontaneous brain activity. The first study showed that strokes disrupt large-scale network coherence in the spontaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI) signals, and that …

The Hot Seat: Challenging Critical Thinking And Problem Solving Skills In Physical Therapist Students, Bill O'Dell, Jennifer Mai, Alecia Thiele, Andrew Priest, Kathleen Salamon
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Allied health profession students must develop critical thinking and problem solving skills to be able to make clinical decisions. The purpose of this paper is to describe an educational model used in a physical therapist education program to improve students’ confidence in clinical decision-making. Methods: The faculty chose topics for each forum and invited specific clinicians to present actual clinical cases to students in small group settings. The small groups spent 30 minutes focused on each case, and then rotated to a different clinician so each had exposure to three scenarios. After presenting subjective clinical information, the clinicians asked …

Sleeping To Remember: Spontaneous Retrieval Of Prospective Memories Across Sleep And Wake Delays, Michael Scullin
Sleeping To Remember: Spontaneous Retrieval Of Prospective Memories Across Sleep And Wake Delays, Michael Scullin
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Laboratory-based prospective memory tasks have rarely examined the effect of retention interval on later remembering. In the current study, participants had to remember to perform an intended action: press Q in response to a target cue) after a short delay: approximately 20 min), a 12-hr sleep delay, or a 12-hr wake delay. The results demonstrated a large decline in prospective memory performance after a 12-hr wake delay: relative to the short delay condition). Interestingly, prospective remembering was not only better following a 12-hr sleep delay than a 12-hr wake delay but performance in this condition did not differ significantly from …
Test Expectancy And Transfer Of Knowledge With Open-Book And Closed-Book Tests, Pooja Agarwal
Test Expectancy And Transfer Of Knowledge With Open-Book And Closed-Book Tests, Pooja Agarwal
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Two experiments examined the testing effect with open-book tests, in which students view notes and textbooks while taking the test, and closed-book tests, in which students take the test without viewing notes or textbooks. In the first experiment, subjects studied GRE passages and then took an open- or closed-book test. Open-book testing led to better initial performance than closed-book testing, but this benefit did not persist and both types of testing produced equivalent retention on GRE comprehension questions and transfer questions after a two-day delay. In the second experiment, subjects were informed in advance of the type of immediate or …
A Thesis Towards Development Of An Occupational Therapy Game System For Stroke Patients, Emily Yang
A Thesis Towards Development Of An Occupational Therapy Game System For Stroke Patients, Emily Yang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Persons who have suffered from stroke participate in occupational therapy to help recover occupational functionality, but therapy is expensive and maximal recovery often depends on repetitive, tedious exercises to be done by patients both in therapy sessions and on their own. Often patients do not have the resources or motivation to complete the treatment required to give them the best results. This thesis is presented as part of a larger project in which we aim to enable occupational therapists to use the Looking Glass programming environment to create computer games for their patients that can be played inexpensively and effectively, …

Adaptive Middleware For Resource-Constrained Mobile Ad Hoc And Wireless Sensor Networks, Chien-Liang Fok
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Mobile ad hoc networks: MANETs) and wireless sensor networks: WSNs) are two recently-developed technologies that uniquely function without fixed infrastructure support, and sense at scales, resolutions, and durations previously not possible. While both offer great potential in many applications, developing software for these types of networks is extremely difficult, preventing their wide-spread use. Three primary challenges are: 1) the high level of dynamics within the network in terms of changing wireless links and node hardware configurations,: 2) the wide variety of hardware present in these networks, and: 3) the extremely limited computational and energy resources available. Until now, the burden …
