Identification Of Falls Risk Factors In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Validation Of The Comprehensive Falls Risk Screening Instrument, Jennifer Marie Fabre Jan 2009

Identification Of Falls Risk Factors In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Validation Of The Comprehensive Falls Risk Screening Instrument, Jennifer Marie Fabre

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Identifying risk factors and those at risk for falls is necessary. The first purpose of the dissertation was to validate the Comprehensive Falls Risk Screening Instrument (CFRSI) that weights falls risk factors and includes the subscale scores of history, physical, vision, medication, and environment, and a total falls risk score. The CFRSI total falls risk score was compared to subscale scores, physical activity, physical function, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and history of falls (Study 1). The second purpose of the dissertation was to determine associations between the CFRSI total falls risk score, race, education, and income (Study 2). Data …

A Modular Approach To Lung Nodule Detection From Computed Tomography Images Using Artificial Neural Networks And Content Based Image Representation, Omer Muhammet Soysal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lung cancer is one of the most lethal cancer types. Research in computer aided detection (CAD) and diagnosis for lung cancer aims at providing effective tools to assist physicians in cancer diagnosis and treatment to save lives. In this dissertation, we focus on developing a CAD framework for automated lung cancer nodule detection from 3D lung computed tomography (CT) images. Nodule detection is a challenging task that no machine intelligence can surpass human capability to date. In contrast, human recognition power is limited by vision capacity and may suffer from work overload and fatigue, whereas automated nodule detection systems can …

Strangers In The Postcolonial World, Thomas F. Halloran Jan 2009

Strangers In The Postcolonial World, Thomas F. Halloran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes American writing from and about the former British and French colonies in order to critique postcolonial theory and also to establish a new genre of expatriate literature. Focusing on the works of J. P. Donleavy, Edith Wharton, Paul Bowles, and Paul Theroux, I argue that reading these Americans disrupts the binary concepts encouraged by postcolonial theory. This project rethinks important dichotomies such as colonizer/colonized, center/margin, metropolis/margin, civilized/primitive, and white/non-white by examining the ambiguous American character in the postcolonial context. I argue that by categorizing the themes of American literature in the colonies, and analyzing the similarities and …

Beta-Diketone And -Ketoenamine-Based Organic Building Blocks For Porous Metal Organic-Materials, Yoseph Solomon Marcos Jan 2009

Beta-Diketone And -Ketoenamine-Based Organic Building Blocks For Porous Metal Organic-Materials, Yoseph Solomon Marcos

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on synthesis of multifunctional â-diketone and â-ketoenamine ligands and their reaction with metal ions, mainly Cu2+. Several new bi-, tri-, and tetrafunctional organosilicon â-diketone building blocks with â-diketone groups at approx. 109° (tetrahedral) were successfully synthesized. New thiophene based bifunctional ligands where the â-diketones are at about 145° are also reported here. We also prepared a range of new aryl-â-ketoenamines from their analogous â-diketones in very high yield using a simple microwave-assisted procedure. Reactions of organosilicon tris(â-diketone)s LH3 with Cu2+ were explored quite intensively. These ligands form metal-organic-polyhedra (MOPs) that are soluble in organic solvents, and insoluble …

Comparative Phylogeography Of Neotropical Birds, Curtis Wade Burney Jan 2009

Comparative Phylogeography Of Neotropical Birds, Curtis Wade Burney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite the theoretical link between the ecology and the population genetics of species, little empirical evidence is available that corroborates the association. Here, I examined genetic variation in 40 co-distributed species of lowland Neotropical rainforest birds that have populations isolated on either side of the Andes, Amazon River, and Madeira River. I found widely varying levels of genetic divergence among these taxa between the same biogeographic barriers. My investigation of the extent to which ecological traits predicted the level of cross-barrier divergence revealed a significant relationship between the forest stratum at which a species forages and the level of within-population …

Studies On The Effect Of Natural Organic Matter And Hydration On The Sorption And Desorption Of Trifluorinated Pesticides, Charisma Vinarao Lattao Jan 2009

Studies On The Effect Of Natural Organic Matter And Hydration On The Sorption And Desorption Of Trifluorinated Pesticides, Charisma Vinarao Lattao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work was done in order to deepen our molecular level understanding of how soil organic matter (SOM) is assembled in a whole soil and to provide further insight on the effect of SOM assembly on the uptake and release of hydrophobic organic compounds. Various techniques, including ultraviolet absorbance, fluorescence, and total carbon analysis, demonstrate that hydration/solvation of SOM is kinetically controlled. Initial wetting of a soil releases the hydrophobic moieties that are located at the outer surface of SOM, and longer wetting times exfoliate more hydrophobic quinone type moieties that are present in the middle layer, which in turn …

The Assessment Of And Differences Among Intellectually Disabled Adults With Comorbid Autism Spectrum Disorders And Epilepsy, Kimberly Robin Michelle Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study was to systematically examine group differences among those with intellectual disabilities (ID) and comorbid Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and epilepsy in an adult population through a detailed exploration of the characteristics that these disorders present in the areas of psychopathology, behavior problems, and impaired social behavior. Previous studies indicating that individuals with ID have comorbid ASD and neurological conditions tend to stop short of addressing these disorders’ impact on the full range of psychosocial issues, particularly in adult samples. Assessments of psychopathology, behavior problems, and impaired social behavior were made with the ASD-Comorbidity-Adult Version and …

An Analysis Of The Historical And Biographical Influences On The Music Of Francis Poulenc As Portrayed In His Les Soirées De Nazelles, Gay K. Grosz Jan 2009

An Analysis Of The Historical And Biographical Influences On The Music Of Francis Poulenc As Portrayed In His Les Soirées De Nazelles, Gay K. Grosz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As a composer, Francis Poulenc has been under-appreciated and overlooked by many contemporary performers and teachers. Poulenc wrote music from his heart, paying little heed to formal systems or musical fashions of his day. In matters of harmony, he was content to use conventional chromatic harmony, but in a manner uniquely his own. Poulenc’s compositions always reflected his personality and Les Soirées de Nazelles is no exception. The many facets of Poulenc’s personality cannot be separated from his music and they contribute to its wit and charm. This document is an examination of Poulenc’s background, personality, and influences, and how …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The Eu Sugar Policy Reform On Acp Countries: A Quota Market Framework, Liliane Kiswendsida Zoungrana

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The pressures for reform within the World Trade Organization have led to the European Union (EU) reforming its sugar policy with a price cut phased from 2006 and scheduled to end in 2009. The reform will have an impact on the sugar protocol African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries that have a preferential market access to the European Union with a protected price. This study investigates the effect of EU sugar policy reform has on these ACP sugar countries. First, it examines how the protocol countries’ sugar supply and demand determinants. While the determinants of supply in some countries performed …

Function Spaces, Wavelets And Representation Theory, Jens Gerlach Christensen Jan 2009

Function Spaces, Wavelets And Representation Theory, Jens Gerlach Christensen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the interplay between the theory of Banach spaces and representations of groups. The wavelet transform has proven to be a useful tool in characterizing and constructing Banach spaces, and we investigate a generalization of an already known technique due to H.G. Feichtinger and K. Gröchenig. This generalization is presented in Chapter 3, and in Chapters 4 and 5 we present examples of spaces which can be described using the theory. The first example clears up a question regarding a wavelet characterization of Bergman spaces related to a non-integrable representation. The second example is a wavelet …

The Effects Of Increasing The Risk Perception Of High-Risk Behaviors On Decision Making Among College Daily Smokers And Never-Smokers, Scott Patterson Jan 2009

The Effects Of Increasing The Risk Perception Of High-Risk Behaviors On Decision Making Among College Daily Smokers And Never-Smokers, Scott Patterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Participation in high-risk behaviors, such as substance use or dangerous driving practices, is widely reported by young adults and college students. Psychosocial theories explain participation in high-risk behaviors by the effects of risk perception on the outcome of behavior. Physiological researchers assert that biological factors (such as the role of the prefrontal cortex) better account for participation in high-risk behaviors based on impulsive decision-making patterns in substance users. The current study explored the relationship between impulsive decision-making and risk perception by assessing the impact of changes in high-risk perceptions on a measure of impulsive decision-making (delay discounting task). A sample …

Investigations Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Ergosterol Biosynthesis, Kristy Marie Brumfield Jan 2009

Investigations Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Ergosterol Biosynthesis, Kristy Marie Brumfield

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ergosterol is the major sterol found in the membranes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. While past studies have identified some ergosterol mutants in C. reinhardtii, very little is known about sterol biosynthesis pathways in this species. With the elucidation of the Chlamydomonas genome, bioinformatics analysis has allowed us to determine potential genes involved in ergosterol biosynthesis. With this knowledge, a working model of the pathway was designed for future analysis. Several of the ergosterol biosynthetic genes were analyzed in respect to their role and involvement in flagellar regeneration. These genes were upregulated during the regrowth of the flagella. Also Chlamydomonas strains lacking …

Scheduling And Reconfiguration Of Interconnection Network Switches, Krishnendu Roy Jan 2009

Scheduling And Reconfiguration Of Interconnection Network Switches, Krishnendu Roy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Interconnection networks are important parts of modern computing systems, facilitating communication between a system's components. Switches connecting various nodes of an interconnection network serve to move data in the network. The switch's delay and throughput impact the overall performance of the network and thus the system. Scheduling efficient movement of data through a switch and configuring the switch to realize a schedule are the main themes of this research. We consider various interconnection network switches including (i) crossbar-based switches, (ii) circuit-switched tree switches, and (iii) fat-tree switches. For crossbar-based input-queued switches, a recent result established that logarithmic packet delay is …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using audience response systems (ARS) on student learning outcomes and learning processes, when the instructional strategy of using sequentially challenging questions and collaborative discussions were held constant across both treatment and control conditions. A quasi-experimental AB alternating research design was employed. Two sections of a Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology course at a small faith-based college participated in the study. One section served as control and the other section as treatment groups until midsemester, when the roles of the groups switched. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. …

Inside The Red Box: North Korea's Post-Totalitarian Politcs, Patrick Mceachern Jan 2009

Inside The Red Box: North Korea's Post-Totalitarian Politcs, Patrick Mceachern

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a radically new understanding of North Korean politics under Kim Jong Il and carefully tests this theoretical proposition. Current models describe North Korea as some form of a highly centralized state: totalitarian, personalistic, or corporatist. By contrast, I argue that these monolithic ideal types fail to capture the institutional pluralism that helps distinguish the younger Kim’s rein from his father’s. While Kim Il Sung’s rule can be described as totalitarian, Kim Jong Il governs through a more decentralized post-totalitarian, institutionally plural state. Kim Jong Il’s government is highly centralized, but it is less centralized than his father’s. …

Dna Methylation Analysis And Identification Of A Novel Antisense Transcript In The Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer Marian Huang Jan 2009

Dna Methylation Analysis And Identification Of A Novel Antisense Transcript In The Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jennifer Marian Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Genomic imprinting is a process that leads to the silencing of one allele of a gene in a parent of origin specific manner. Genes that are involved in this process are often regulated in clusters, one of which is the Peg3 (Paternally expressed gene 3) imprinted domain. We investigated this region for both CpG islands and long antisense transcripts, two common features of imprinted gene clusters. First, we performed a systematic survey of DNA methylation status of the CpG islands in this region of the mouse, cow, and human genomes. We identified two previously unreported differentially methylated regions (DMR): one …

An Uncertainty-Based Approach To The Total Maximum Daily Load Development, Abhijit Patil Jan 2009

An Uncertainty-Based Approach To The Total Maximum Daily Load Development, Abhijit Patil

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A Bayesian-updating approach is developed to the estimation of the total uncertainty-based Margin of Safety (MOS) for Total Maximum Daily Load calculations using the watershed modeling tool HSPF. In order to determine the prior, likelihood, and posterior distributions of uncertainties involved in Bayesian approach, various probability density functions are derived. The temperature measurement induced uncertainty in dissolved oxygen simulation is found to be normally distributed. The temporal scale uncertainty in weather data decreases with decreasing temporal resolution. The temporal-scale uncertainties in the rainfall and temperature data follow a Weibull and general extreme value distributions, respectively. The spatial-resolution uncertainty in simulated …

Global Positioning System In Curved Space-Time And Other Applications Of General Relativity, Argenis Daniel Da Silva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, we present some applications of the theory of General Relativity. First, we show a numerical scheme to account for relativistic effects in the Global Positioning System. Then, a couple of applications of astrophysical interest are worked out. These are the study of the gravitational collapse of stars and the dynamical evolution of a three-dimensional Einstein-Klein-Gordon field.

The Effects Of Visual Representations On Teacher Training Of Phonological Awareness Principles, Rachel Kennedy Powell Jan 2009

The Effects Of Visual Representations On Teacher Training Of Phonological Awareness Principles, Rachel Kennedy Powell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Teachers are now being held to high accountability standards in reading instruction, yet studies show that teachers lack adequate knowledge in reading and phonological awareness principles (Moats, 1994, 2009; Spencer, Schuele, Guillot, & Lee, 2008). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of visual representations of letter/sound production (i.e., Phonic Faces, Norris, 2001) on improving teacher knowledge of phonological awareness principles, and to determine if there is a concomitant improvement in phonological awareness and reading acquisition for children in those classrooms. Seventeen kindergarten teachers from a Mississippi school were pretested on phonological awareness principles, then divided into …

Evidence That The Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b Affect Chromatin Structure In Drosophila Melanogaster, Matthew Kenneth Gilbert Jan 2009

Evidence That The Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b Affect Chromatin Structure In Drosophila Melanogaster, Matthew Kenneth Gilbert

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Boundary Element-Associated Factors, BEAF-32A and BEAF-32B bind to hundreds of loci on Drosophila chromosomes. These proteins function as insulators; they can prevent promoter activation by an enhancer when placed between them and protect transgenes from chromosomal position effects. To gain insight into BEAF function we designed and expressed a transgene encoding a dominant-negative form of BEAF. This peptide, BID, consists of the BEAF self-interaction domain. We demonstrate here that this peptide interferes with BEAF’s ability to bind DNA and prevents it from functioning as an insulator. In addition, expression of BID leads to a global disruption of polytene chromosome …

The Virgin's Daughters: Catholic Traditions And The Post-Colonial South In Contemporary Women's Writing, Elizabeth M. Beard Jan 2009

The Virgin's Daughters: Catholic Traditions And The Post-Colonial South In Contemporary Women's Writing, Elizabeth M. Beard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the texts of contemporary women writers who consciously engage dominant Catholic, American, and southern ideologies in their narratives and who posit Louisiana as a liminal, hybrid space. Building upon postcolonial concepts of hybridity and performance of cultural memory, I trace a “pathway” to feminist recovery and reclamation of ancestral memory and spirituality in Valerie Martin’s A Recent Martyr, Rebecca Wells’ Little Altars Everywhere and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Brenda Marie Osbey’s All Saints, and Erna Brodber’s Louisiana. The authors enact spiritual and cultural reclamation through the written expression of key components of postcolonial reconstruction of …

Determining The Number Of Factors In Data Containing A Single Outlier: A Study Of Factor Analysis Of Simulated Data, Victor Snipes Swaim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Numerous procedures have been suggested for determining the number of factors to retain in factor analysis. However, previous studies have focused on comparing methods using normal data sets. This study had two phases. The first phase explored the Kaiser method, Scree test, Bartlett’s chi-square test, Minimum Average Partial (1976 & 2000), Horn’s parallel analysis, and Longman’s Parallel Analysis on normal data using the estimation methods of Maximum Likelihood (ML), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Principal Factor Analysis (PFA). The second phase explored the Kaiser method, Scree test, Minimum Average Partial (1976 & 2000), and Horn’s parallel analysis, and Longman’s Parallel …

Exploration Of Ternary Intermetallic Materials Using Tin And Gallium Flux, Edem Kodzo Okudzeto Jan 2009

Exploration Of Ternary Intermetallic Materials Using Tin And Gallium Flux, Edem Kodzo Okudzeto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the structure-property relationships of ternary intermetallic stannides and gallides. We are interested in these compounds because of the wide range of physical properties they possess. While investigating the Ln-Co-Sn system (Ln = lanthanide), we have synthesized single crystals that crystallize in the Yb3Rh4Sn13, Ho7Co6Sn23 and the Tb5Rh6Sn18 structure types. We observe the formation of a particular structure type depending on the size of the lanthanide present. The aforementioned compounds all contain CoSn6 trigonal prisms, which create voids occupied by Ln and Sn polyhedral units. We have also investigated the physical properties of these compounds …

Spreadsheet Based Immediate Feedback Formative Assessments For Naïve Conception Recognition And Corrective Accommodation In The Physical Sciences, Jonnie R. Becker

Graduate Research Papers

Providing an education requires continuous assessment which is not feasible with traditional methodologies. This project involved the creation of a set of three formative assessment spreadsheet workbooks that provide instant feedback related to common naive conceptions of matter, change, and energy. Combining validity tested assessment items and constructivist learning theory as a base, multiple choice questions were placed into a series of Excel spreadsheet workbooks that are inter-referenced to instantly report student achievement and reasoning. These spreadsheets provide accurate, timely feedback to the students and the facilitator, as well as an opportunity for students to grow their understandings. This assessment …
