The Characteristics And Functions Of Humor In Psychotherapy: A Qualitative Study, Joshua Gregson
The Characteristics And Functions Of Humor In Psychotherapy: A Qualitative Study, Joshua Gregson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Literature on humor in psychotherapy has been strongly influenced by a debate on whether therapists should engage in humor with clients. Many authors urge caution and are suspicious of humor's use by therapists. Others argue that humor is helpful in therapy and illustrate its uses through clinical evidence, mainly anecdotes from the author's experience. The debate on humor's admissibility in psychotherapy treats humor as optional, and thereby ignores its centrality in human relating and its inevitability in the therapeutic relationship.
Since humor inevitably arises in psychotherapy, it is important for therapists to know typical manifestations and meanings of humor in …

Public Water Fluoridation, Jessica Fohey
Public Water Fluoridation, Jessica Fohey
Honors Program Theses
This thesis project addresses the issue of public water fluoridation. There is a debate within the United States as to whether or not public water systems should be fluoridated. Because of the large scale potential health impact, it is critical to determine whether or not this practice is in the best interest of the public. This paper provides an extensive review of scientific literature on the effectiveness, safety, and cost effectiveness of public water fluoridation. Following the review of scientific literature, I will present an overview of pseudo-scientific literature which advocates against public water fluoridation that, although often not scientifically …

This introduction, first, sets out and evaluates the reciprocal, antiphonal steps of "Vatican initiative" and "university response" at this collection of essays' genesis. Once having done so, it offers the reader not only a basic synthesis of the authors' separate contributions but also of the contours of the collection as a whole. In these ways it offers readers an introductory roadmap to the wealth of insights that the collection contains and those that it may in turn inspire.

On A Special Copy Of Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon Recently Discovered In The Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Paul Douglass, Ria Grimbergen
Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature
This essay analyses a recently discovered copy of the first edition of Lady Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague filled with annotations and corrections apparently in the hand of its author. This copy shows many of the extensive revisions eventually implemented in the second edition of the novel. Some changes indicated in this special copy were not adopted, however, and a note on the punctuation in a hand not the author's raises the question of whether others edited the work, especially the punctuation. The essay shows how, working with great skill to minimise the labour of …

An important and traditional power afforded by the Bankruptcy Code to debtors and trustees is the power to sell encumbered property free and clear of any liens or encumbrances. See G COLLIER ON BANKRUPTCY, App. Pt. 44, at 44-529 (Alan N. Resnick et al. eds., 15th ed. rev. 2006). One way in which this power is given to debtors and trustees is through Section 363(f)(3) of the Bankruptcy Code, which provides a mechanism for property to be sold free and clear of any liens. See 11 U.S.C. § 363(f)(3) (2006). Yet, the application of Section 363(f)(3) is not entirely …

Smuggling Versus Trafficking: Do The U.N. Protocols Have It Right?, Carolyn Burke
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The terms “human trafficking” and “human smuggling” are often thought of as interchangeable due to their similar connections with irregular migration and the clandestine movement of people. However, trafficking and smuggling maintain their own differences, especially pertaining to their organizational dynamics, their forms, and their voluntary and involuntary natures that revolve around trust and exploitation. Current understandings of these terms stem from the widely accepted United Nations Protocols that were resultant from the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
Education For All Children, Sharon Harrall
Education For All Children, Sharon Harrall
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The UN Declaration of Human Rights, ratified in 1948, declared for the first time the right to education as a human right. Article 26 (1) states that “everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory.” Since then, the right to education has been reaffirmed in subsequent treaties and global conferences. These treaties have also highlighted the need to provide education to all children without discrimination, and particularly to ensure equal access for girls. Historically, we have seen great gender disparities in the enrollment rates of …
The Continuation Of Slavery In The Modern World: The People’S Republic Of China And Forced Labor Practices, Jasmine Koehn
The Continuation Of Slavery In The Modern World: The People’S Republic Of China And Forced Labor Practices, Jasmine Koehn
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The age-old scourge of slavery has returned to plague the modern world. Though updated to match societal advances, the basic premise remains: human beings degraded to the point of becoming a mere commodity. Today’s world calls modern day slavery human trafficking, and it can take many forms, including forced labor. In the People’s Republic of China (PRC), two distinct forms of forced labor exist. One form is the more traditional master-slave system, wherein people are bought and sold, or kidnapped, and subsequently forced to work, often in intense and dangerous manual labor. The second form exists legally under the Chinese …
The Challenges Of Change: Causes And Consequences Of Child Labor In China, Andrea Morley
The Challenges Of Change: Causes And Consequences Of Child Labor In China, Andrea Morley
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The government of China opened its doors to the global economy in the late 1970s, with gradually but steadily increasing competition, trade, and production. The ‘Asian Tiger’ was fueled by export-led development as the number of factories and production facilities spread rapidly across the country. This rapid economic growth exacerbated labor violations, primarily due to the increased incentives for profits and demands of production on Chinese factories. In order to be more competitive, China required a strong labor force; its citizens were thrust into the global economy.
China’S Relationship With Sudan—And Human Rights Consequences, Tessa Li Powell
China’S Relationship With Sudan—And Human Rights Consequences, Tessa Li Powell
Human Rights & Human Welfare
China is the largest country in the world and has a rapidly expanding economy. Its streets are starting to crowd with cars instead of bicycles and there is an increasing demand for the luxuries of developed nations. The desire to keep up with major international players has pushed the Chinese government to overlook whatever human rights abuses may be occurring inside and outside of its borders. China has taken steps to support Sudan despite its use of child soldiers and the genocide in Darfur that has been occurring for years. By criticizing and withdrawing support from President al-Bashir, China could …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Freedom Of Speech And Expression In The People’S Republic Of China, Liza Negriff
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The international community has been criticizing China for its human rights violations for years. However, one human rights violation has received less attention than some other rights issues both inside and outside of China: censorship and restrictions on freedom of speech and expression. This scantiness of attention is largely attributed to the fact that acquiring reliable information about censorship and freedom of expression in China is challenging.
The Colonial Legacy And Human Rights In Mexico: Indigenous Rights And The Zapatista Movement, Alexander Karklins
The Colonial Legacy And Human Rights In Mexico: Indigenous Rights And The Zapatista Movement, Alexander Karklins
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The current status of human rights in Latin America has been profoundly affected by the legacy of colonial institutions. Since the time of conquest, through colonialism, and after independence, the growth of the Latin American state has been challenged by the alternative discourse of indigenous rights. In Mexico, the dominance of mestizaje (or the quest for a single Mexican ethnic identity) in the formation of its modern state apparatus has left indigenous cultures out of the realm of political participation and exposed to human rights violations. With the Zapatista uprising of 1994-1996, the contradictions inherent in Mexico’s constitution were brought …

Police Violence In Brazil, Kyra Moon

“This was just the beginning. They want war, and they‟ll get war. The problem of trafficking will only be resolved with blood. It is the only language they understand.” This was the response of Mario Azevedo, chief delegate of the 21st police precinct in the Bonsucsso neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, after drug traffickers killed three police officers. Three days after that assault, one hundred and twenty heavily armed police officers stormed into the Nova Brasilia favela (the Brazilian term for slum or shantytown) and killed thirteen residents, four of which were minors. Press reports initially described this incident in …
Violence Against Sex Workers In Latin America: Pervasiveness, Impunity, And Implications, Stephanie A. Bell
Violence Against Sex Workers In Latin America: Pervasiveness, Impunity, And Implications, Stephanie A. Bell
Human Rights & Human Welfare
On December 17, 2005, two transgendered sex workers in Guatemala City were shot in the head, one fatally. Witnesses—including the survivor—alleged that police forces shot the victims. Human rights advocates have argued that the attack was part of a broader social cleansing campaign that has targeted all sex workers.
Sex workers in Latin America are subjected to violence regularly. This violence varies greatly, but its pervasiveness and the impunity for perpetrators are two common themes. Violence against sex workers comes from many different sources: police, pimps, johns, serial killers, gang members and others. The violence also takes many forms, including …

Imagine a debtor who lives in New York State, where the median household income for 2007 was approximately $53,000. The debtor is a doctor and receives $80,000 of income from the hospital where she works. The good doctor, however, has gotten in over her head. She purchased a gigantic home she could not afford, has too many student loans to pay back, and regrets buying that expensive car. Her credit card debt is staggering, and she incurs thousands of dollars each month in interest and fees. She decides she can no longer handle the financial pressure and wants to …

The tort of “deepening insolvency” refers to an action asserted by a representative of a bankruptcy estate against directors, officers, lenders, or others based on their pre-petition interactions with the debtor. 9 NORTON BANKR. L. & PRAC. 3d § 174:22. Liability under deepening insolvency has been imposed where “the defendant’s conduct, either fraudulently or even negligently, prolongs the life of a corporation, thereby increasing the corporation's debt and exposure to creditors.” In re LTV Steel Co., Inc., 333 B.R. 397, 421 (Bankr. N.D. Ohio 2005). Damages under the theory are sometimes awarded to a bankrupt corporation when, by delaying …

Does section 541(a)(1) of title 11 of the U.S. Code, which defines a debtor’s bankruptcy “estate,” include collateral which has been lawfully repossessed by secured creditors pursuant to Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (“UCC”) prior to the debtor’s filing for bankruptcy? The courts have split in answering this pro-debtor issue by defining “estate” differently. Recently, in Tidewater Fin. Co. v. Curry (In re Curry), 509 F.3d 735, 735 (6th Cir. 2007), the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals split with the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits and held that a secured creditor’s repossession of collateral under the state’s …

Although under Pennsylvania common law a lessor has a duty to mitigate damages and is unable to claim damages that could have been avoided, no legal proposition exists that an injured lessor who attempts mitigation of damages resulting from a lessee’s misconduct must bear the consequences of a failed effort. Although the lessor received partial mitigation of a claim against a liable lessee, the lessee nonetheless remains liable for his previous breach.

In Oneida Ltd. v. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York addressed the issue of whether a debtor’s liability for pension termination premiums (“DRA Premiums”) constituted a pre-petition contingent “claim” and was, therefore, dischargeable pursuant to the debtor’s reorganization plan confirmation. 383 B.R. 29, 32 (Bankr. S.D.N.Y. 2008). The Bankruptcy Court held that the debtor’s liability for DRA premiums was a dischargeable pre-petition “claim” even though the pension termination occurs during the debtor’s chapter 11 case. Id. at 32, 43.
The Bankruptcy Court based its holding on three determinations: (1) …

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (“BAPCPA”) was implemented in order to prevent debtors from unjustly shielding value in their estate from deserving creditors and thus abusing the functionality of the federal bankruptcy system. Specifically, one problem perceived to be very prevalent was a practice by individual debtors who would seek to avoid the stringent guidelines of the “means test” in Chapter 13 cases by running for the protection of the more relaxed standards in Chapter 11 cases. The BAPCPA Amendments to section 1129 of the Bankruptcy Code were adopted to institute stricter standards in Chapter 11 …
Transcriptional Regulation Of The Porcine Type Ii Gnrh Receptor Gene, Vanessa M. Brauer
Transcriptional Regulation Of The Porcine Type Ii Gnrh Receptor Gene, Vanessa M. Brauer
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The classical mammalian form of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), GnRH I, is a hypothalamic neuropeptide that functions as a key regulator of reproduction. The interaction between GnRH I and its receptor, GnRH receptor I (GnRHR I), stimulates gonadotropin secretion from the anterior pituitary gland. The gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), act on the gonads to stimulate either steroidogenesis and ovulation or gametogenesis, respectively. The steroid hormones produced in the gonads act through a feedback pathway to regulate the production of both GnRH I from the hypothalamus and gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary.
Another form of GnRH, …

MORAL REASONS ARBITRARINESS
The moral philosophies of Allan Gibbard, Christine Korsgaard, and John Post (following Ruth Garrett Millikan's "teleosemantics") each succumb to moral reasons arbitrariness. If a moral philosophy suffers from moral reasons arbitrariness, it fails to establish support relations for moral judgments that uniquely justify those judgments in terms that make essential reference to a person's ability to consider and weigh those support relations in making a moral decision. Moral reasons arbitrariness arises when (1) moral reasons are rooted in factors adventitious to the consideration of support relations, or (2) conflicting moral judgments …

Recognition Of Emotions From Facial Expression And Situational Cues In Children With Autism, Dina Tell
Dissertations
The present study investigated two areas of emotion recognition in school-aged high-functioning children with autism and typically developing children, matched on chronological age and gender: (1) recognition of facially expressed emotions that were presented in still photographs of adult faces and (2) emotion recognition from situational and facial cues, presented in line drawings of emotionally-laden situations. For the photograph task, children's accuracy in recognizing facial expressions of happy, sad, angry, and fear emotions along with neutral expressions was investigated. All emotional expressions were presented with computer-generated direct and averted eye-gaze at 100% and 50% emotion strength. Of particular interest were …
