Microalgal Biomass For Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Potential For Replacement Of Fossil Fuels And Animal Feeds, D. E. Brune, Tryg Lundquist, J. R. Benemann Nov 2009

Microalgal Biomass For Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Potential For Replacement Of Fossil Fuels And Animal Feeds, D. E. Brune, Tryg Lundquist, J. R. Benemann

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Microalgal biomass production offers a number of advantages over conventional biomass production, including higher productivities, use of otherwise nonproductive land, reuse and recovery of waste nutrients, use of saline or brackish waters, and reuse of CO2 from power-plant flue gas or similar sources. Microalgal biomass production and utilization offers potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) avoidance by providing biofuel replacement of fossil fuels and carbon-neutral animal feeds. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential for GHG avoidance using a proposed algal biomass production system coupled to recovery of flue-gas CO2 combined with waste sludge and/or animal manure …

Surgical Removal Of Right-To-Left Cardiac Shunt In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Causes Ventricular Enlargement But Does Not Alter Apnoea Or Metabolism During Diving, John Eme, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Tomasz Owerkowicz, Gildardo Barron, James W. Hicks Nov 2009

Hicks

Biological Sciences

Crocodilians have complete anatomical separation between the ventricles, similar to birds and mammals, but retain the dual aortic arch system found in all non-avian reptiles. This cardiac anatomy allows surgical modification that prevents right-to-left (R–L) cardiac shunt. A R–L shunt is a bypass of the pulmonary circulation and recirculation of oxygen-poor blood back to the systemic circulation and has often been observed during the frequent apnoeic periods of non-avian reptiles, particularly during diving in aquatic species. We eliminated R–L shunt in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) by surgically occluding the left aorta (LAo; arising from right ventricle) upstream and …

Physics

We have recently completed a 64-night spectroscopic monitoring campaign at the Lick Observatory 3-m Shane telescope with the aim of measuring the masses of the black holes in 12 nearby (z < 0.05) Seyfert 1 galaxies with expected masses in the range ~106-107 M ☉ and also the well-studied nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 5548. Nine of the objects in the sample (including NGC 5548) showed optical variability of sufficient strength during the monitoring campaign to allow for a time lag to be measured between the continuum fluctuations and the response to these fluctuations in the broad Hβ emission. We present here the light curves for all …

Wood Chip Heating For Commercial Buildings In Ireland: An Analysis Of Supply Methods And Financial Viability, Ciaran Berkeley Nov 2009

Wood Chip Heating For Commercial Buildings In Ireland: An Analysis Of Supply Methods And Financial Viability, Ciaran Berkeley

Masters

Ireland has three central issues regarding the supply and use of fuel and energy: import dependency; competitiveness; and greenhouse gases emissions. Ireland is ranked as one of the most import dependent states in the EU, with over 90% of its fuel sourced fiom abroad [IAEA, 20051. Combined with rapidly fluctuating oil and gas wsts and uncertainty with future supply, it is essential that Ireland find a more secure and sustainable alternative to fossil hels. Wood chip represents one such alternative energy source since it is locally produced and considered to be carbon-neutral. The main objective of this research is to …

Yeast Ste23p Shares Functional Similarities With Mammalian Insulin-Degrading Enzymes, Benjamin Alper, Jarrad W. Rowse, Walter K. Schmidt

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

The S. cerevisiae genome encodes two M16A enzymes: Axl1p and Ste23p. Of the two, Ste23p shares significantly higher sequence identity with M16A enzymes from other species, including mammalian insulin-degrading enzymes (IDEs). In this study, recombinant Ste23p and R. norvegicus IDE (RnIDE) were isolated from E. coli, and their enzymatic properties compared. Ste23p was found to cleave established RnIDE substrates including the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ 1-40) and insulin B chain. A novel internally quenched fluorogenic substrate (Abz-SEKKDNYIIKGVnitroY-OH) based on the polypeptide sequence of the yeast P2 a-factor mating propheromone was determined to be a suitable substrate for …

The Effects Of Word Walls And Word Wall Activities On The Reading Fluency Of First Grade Students, Joanne Jasmine, Pamela Schiesl Nov 2009

The Effects Of Word Walls And Word Wall Activities On The Reading Fluency Of First Grade Students, Joanne Jasmine, Pamela Schiesl

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading fluency is the ability to read orally with speed and efficiency, including word recognition, decoding, and comprehension (Chard & Pikulski, 2005). Able readers achieve fluency as they recognize words with speed and build upon them to aid in comprehension (Pumfrey & Elliott, 1990). One way to help students achieve fluency is through the use of word walls and word wall activities (Callella, 2001). Word walls are bulletin boards that contain a collection of high-frequency or theme-related words and their activities include games that focus on using the word wall to learn sight words. This article describes an action research …

The Western Australian fishery is the only remaining significant fishery for pearl oysters in the world and comprises most of the exported pearl product of Australia, currently worth around $125 million annually. The majority of pearl shells used to culture pearls come from the pearling beds in the inshore waters near Broome. The fishery for pearl oysters preferentially targets smaller ‘culture’ shell (4-5 years age class, 120mm - 160mm shell length) that are more suitable for growing pearls, leaving larger MOP oysters (6+ age class, 175mm+) on the fishing grounds.

Silver-lipped pearl oysters (Pinctada …

The End Of Objector Blackmail?, Brian T. Fitzpatrick Nov 2009

The End Of Objector Blackmail?, Brian T. Fitzpatrick

Vanderbilt Law Review

For many years, courts and commentators have been concerned about a phenomenon in class action litigation referred to as objector "blackmail." The term "blackmail" is used figuratively rather than literally; so-called objector "blackmail" is simply a specific application of the general concern with legal regimes that permit one or more individuals to "hold out" and disrupt collective action. The holdout problem in class action litigation stems from the following series of events: When a class action is settled, class members who do not like the proposed settlement are permitted to file objections with the federal district court that must approve …

Sports Franchises, Stadiums, And City Livability: An Examination Of Professional Sports And Crime Rates, Robert Baumann, Bryan Engelhardt, Victor Matheson, Taylor Ciavarra Nov 2009

Sports Franchises, Stadiums, And City Livability: An Examination Of Professional Sports And Crime Rates, Robert Baumann, Bryan Engelhardt, Victor Matheson, Taylor Ciavarra

Economics Department Working Papers

We estimate the impact sporting events have on local crime rates using the technique developed in Arellano and Bond (2001). For events, we consider the presence of MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL franchises as well as whether a city held one of the respective championships, the Olympics, or World Cup matches. We find little to no evidence that sporting events are correlated with either property or violent crime.

A Uniform System For The Enforceability Of Forum Selection Clauses In Federal Courts, Ryan T. Holt Nov 2009

A Uniform System For The Enforceability Of Forum Selection Clauses In Federal Courts, Ryan T. Holt

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the early 1980s, a successful and ambitious Alabama businessman named Walter H. Stewart purchased a failing local copying business. Through the Stewart Organization, a corporation he controlled, Stewart sought to steer this troubled business to the realm of profitability. To do so, he entered into a dealership contract with Ricoh Corporation, a national manufacturer of copy machines that conducted its operations in New York. Unfortunately, their relationship soured. Stewart sued Ricoh in an Alabama federal district court, basing jurisdiction on diversity of citizenship. Ricoh did not want to litigate in Alabama, and the original dealership contract seemed to provide …

The Sense Of Smell And Its Effect On Attraction, Grant Perkins Nov 2009

The Sense Of Smell And Its Effect On Attraction, Grant Perkins

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The effect of cologne/perfume on attractiveness was examined, as well as the differences between the effect of cologne/perfume and sex. Twenty-seven participants ranging from 18-22 years of age were recruited for the experiment. The purpose of this study was to determine if putting cologne/perfume on an individual will make that person more attractive to the opposite sex than if he/she did not put on cologne/perfume. The rationale behind this is that there are a lot of advertisements about cologne and perfume that portray the people in the advertisements as more desirable after he/she sprays cologne on their skin. The hypothesis …

Nuclear Proliferation And Authority In World Politics, Brian Frederking Ph.D., Kaitlyne Motl, Nishant Timilsina Nov 2009

Nuclear Proliferation And Authority In World Politics, Brian Frederking Ph.D., Kaitlyne Motl, Nishant Timilsina

Journal of International and Global Studies

We apply the “security-hierarchy paradox” to nuclear proliferation. Global security requires a certain amount of hierarchy. A world in which no nuclear proliferation rules exist to constrain states, for example, would not be secure. Global security requires legitimate and authoritative rules, which we define as rules that are mutually negotiated, binding to all and which provide a stable social order. Too much hierarchy, however, amounts to coercion and undermines global security. Rules that are not mutually negotiated, binding to all or do not provide a stable social order are not authoritative. We argue that North Korea and Iran have attempted …

The Development And Role Of Peripheral Auditory Structures In Otocinclus Affinis, Sri Kiran Kumar Reddy Botta Nov 2009

The Development And Role Of Peripheral Auditory Structures In Otocinclus Affinis, Sri Kiran Kumar Reddy Botta

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Loricariidae is a very diverse family of catfishes found primarily in the Amazon River basin. These catfishes have a unique characteristic feature of having fenestrae (holes) in the skull region (compound pterotic bone) adjacent to their bi-lobed swim bladder. Since the swim bladders and the compound pterotic may act as an external ear for hearing in this taxon, I hypothesized that these swim bladders structures have an acoustical functional in the loricariid Otocinclus affinis. In order to understand the development of these structures in O. affinis, I first monitored the ontogeny of the compound pterotic bone by clearing …

Socialization In Chinese Academic Immigrants' Conversion To Christianity, Zhan Jiang Nov 2009

Socialization In Chinese Academic Immigrants' Conversion To Christianity, Zhan Jiang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The aim of this research is to find social factors in Chinese academic immigrants’ conversion to Christianity using the perspectives of symbolic interactionism and social exchange theory. The research data are drawn from observation and interviews. Fourteen Chinese student converts were interviewed. The analysis focuses on the interaction between recruits and Christians. Results supported the idea that religious conversion happens progressively. Affective bonds are essential for the religious conversion of Chinese academic immigrants. Chinese Christian converts experienced five stages. First, they develop affective commitment to Christians close to them and regard them as their reference group. Second, an emergent generalized …

Do Companies Value Maintaining Iso 9000 Certification? 2009 Case Study Of 41 Us Companies First Certified In 2000, Sarah Joy Namara

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The costs of obtaining and maintaining ISO certification are high. Moreover, studies have shown mixed results on the benefits of the certification. Consequently, the objective of this research was to verify whether or not companies do value maintaining the ISO 9000 certification.

The empirical study was conducted on 41 U.S. companies that were first certified in 2000. The companies formed an existing database as they were used by Dr. Arbuckle in 2004 in his doctoral dissertation. Of the 41 companies, 12 were found to be out of business, leaving a final sample size of 29. Data were gathered from this …

Analysis Of A New Modulation/ Multiplexing Technique Using Mutually Orthogonal Chaotic Waveforms, Chaitanya Jidge Nov 2009

Analysis Of A New Modulation/ Multiplexing Technique Using Mutually Orthogonal Chaotic Waveforms, Chaitanya Jidge

Theses

A new digital modulation technique proposed [3] by Dr. Chance M. Glenn is presented and analyzed in this report. The report explains the MOC algorithm as a means of creating information-bearing baseband signals for modulation in digital communications. The process uses the natural diversity of chaotic oscillations. An orthogonal triplet of waveforms is extracted from the oscillations produced by a chaotic process. A simple digital communication system is built, which uses this triplet as basis waveforms to formulate a baseband waveform. There is a lot of research work done and still going on to use chaotic oscillations in the communication …

“We Are Going To Rape You And Taste Tutsi Women”: Rape During The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Over the past decades, scholars have paid greater attention to sexual violence, in both theorization and empirical analysis. One area which has been largely ignored, however, is the sexual violence during times of armed conflict. This paper examines the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Drawing upon testimonies given to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), descriptions of rapes--both singular and mass—were qualitatively analyzed. In general, three broad types of assaults were identified: opportunistic, assaults which seemed to be a product of the disorder inherent within the conflict; episodes of sexual …

Loss Distribution Generation In Credit Portfolio Modeling, Igor Jouravlev, Ruth A. Maurer Nov 2009

Loss Distribution Generation In Credit Portfolio Modeling, Igor Jouravlev, Ruth A. Maurer

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

In the current paper we analyze several methods for generation of loss distribution for credit portfolios. Loss distributions play an important role in pricing of credit derivatives and in credit portfolio optimization. A loss distribution is a function of the number of entities in the portfolio, their credit ratings, the notional amount and recovery of each entity, default probabilities, loss given defaults, and the correlation/dependence structure between entities incorporated in the portfolio. Direct generation of loss distribution may require Monte Carlo simulation which is time consuming and is not effective when applied for credit portfolio optimization. To overcome computational complexity …

Ribosomal Protein L10 Is Encoded In The Mitochondrial Genome Of Many Land Plants And Green Algae, Jeffrey P. Mower, Linda Bonen Nov 2009

Ribosomal Protein L10 Is Encoded In The Mitochondrial Genome Of Many Land Plants And Green Algae, Jeffrey P. Mower, Linda Bonen

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Background: The mitochondrial genomes of plants generally encode 30-40 identified protein-coding genes and a large number of lineage-specific ORFs. The lack of wide conservation for most ORFs suggests they are unlikely to be functional. However, an ORF, termed orf-bryo1, was recently found to be conserved among bryophytes suggesting that it might indeed encode a functional mitochondrial protein.

Results: From a broad survey of land plants, we have found that the orf-bryo1 gene is also conserved in the mitochondria of vascular plants and charophycean green algae. This gene is actively transcribed and RNA edited in many flowering plants. Comparative sequence …
