Host Range Of Tetramesa Romana Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), A Potential Biological Control Of Giant Reed, Arundo Donax L. In North America, John A. Goolsby, Patrick Moran
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The eurytomid wasp, Tetramesa romana Walker was evaluated as a potential biological control agent of the invasive reed grass, Arundo donax in North America. No-choice tests and timed behavioral studies were used to determine the fundamental host range of two genotypes of the wasp collected from Granada, Spain and Perpignan, France. Thirty-five species, including two genotypes of A. donax and seven ecotypes of Phragmites australis, along with closely related grasses, economic grasses and habitat associates were tested. Complete development of both T. romana genotypes was restricted to A. donax and Arundo formosana. The mean number of offspring produced …

Sound Scripts
Much of the power of the cinema experience lies with the sound track, and the way it interacts with what happens on the screen. Soundtrack composition has become a complex art, where musical ideas are enhanced by sound reproduction technologies and complicated by sound effects demanded by the action. The effects of certain ranges of low frequency sound which are featured in the creation and presentation of both film music composition and cinematic sound effects can add an unique dimension to the experience of the soundtrack, and indeed the total cinematic experience. This paper discusses very low frequency sound features …
Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang
Investigating Data Mining Techniques For Extracting Information From Alzheimer's Disease Data, Vinh Quoc Dang
Theses : Honours
Data mining techniques have been used widely in many areas such as business, science, engineering and more recently in clinical medicine. These techniques allow an enormous amount of high dimensional data to be analysed for extraction of interesting information as well as the construction of models for prediction. One of the foci in health related research is Alzheimer's disease which is currently a non-curable disease where diagnosis can only be confirmed after death via an autopsy. Using multi-dimensional data and the applications of data mining techniques, researchers hope to find biomarkers that will diagnose Alzheimer's disease as early as possible. …

The Classics And Her Cygnets: Classic Choreographies And Their Contemporary (Counter) Parts, Leeke Griffin
Theses : Honours
The proliferation of contemporary interpretations of classic works throughout the history of dance is substantial, yet there is little scholarly acknowledgement of contemporary interpretations as a genre unto themselves. Unlike other art forms, there is a lack of academic research into contemporary interpretations within dance and their place in dance history. This thesis delves into the genre of contemporary interpretations of classic choreographies, uncovering their popular appeal, the various approaches, their role and contribution to dance history. The second part is a comparative Swan Lake case study, examining the works of Mats Ek, Matthew Bourne and Garry Stewart in reference …

Exchange Rate Pass-Through For Selected Southeast Asian Countries, Stephanie L. Chan
Exchange Rate Pass-Through For Selected Southeast Asian Countries, Stephanie L. Chan
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Long- and short-run exchange rate pass-through coefficients were estimated for Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines using a simple model based on absolute purchasing power parity. Results were lower than 0.30 for all four countries. Cointegration tests confirmed the existence of a long-run relationship between CPI, GDP, exchange rate, and the U.S. PPI for the countries studied. However, the post-estimation tests showed that a more comprehensive model may need to be developed. The low coefficients reflect the success of the countries in stabilizing their inflation levels, though implying that exchange rate interventions may be less effective in restoring trade balance.

The Use Of Productive Questions In The Early Childhood Classroom, Rachel Alice Dengler
The Use Of Productive Questions In The Early Childhood Classroom, Rachel Alice Dengler
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study is to discover how productive questions can be used in the early childhood classroom. To establish a foundation, child development, early childhood education, and questioning strategies that are currently employed in school or day care settings will be covered first. Finally, there will be a look at the misunderstandings that current pre-service educators have with the different types of productive questions and how to use them in a developmentally appropriate manner with students in the early childhood years.
Attention And Memory In Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Emily Sorensen
Attention And Memory In Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Emily Sorensen
Honors Program Theses
Within the field of communication sciences and disorders, studies concerning performance on cognitive tests tend to focus on the differences between young and old-age groups. The geriatric population has significantly increased over the years and will continue to rise in the coming decades. This rise in the number of older adults has resulted in research that is directed towards investigating the decline in cognitive ability in the aging population.

De Novo Assembly Using Low-Coverage Short Read Sequence Data From The Rice Pathogen Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Oryzae, Josephine A. Reinhardt, David A. Baltrus, Marc T. Nishimura, William R. Jeck, Corbin D. Jones, Jeffery L. Dangl
Biology
We developed a novel approach for de novo genome assembly using only sequence data from high-throughput short read sequencing technologies. By combining data generated from 454 Life Sciences (Roche) and Illumina (formerly known as Solexa sequencing) sequencing platforms, we reliably assembled genomes into large scaffolds at a fraction of the traditional cost and without use of a reference sequence. We applied this method to two isolates of the phytopathogenic bacteria Pseudomonas syringae. Sequencing and reassembly of the well-studied tomato and Arabidopsis pathogen, PtoDC3000, facilitated development and testing of our method. Sequencing of a distantly related rice pathogen, Por1-6, demonstrated our …

A Closer Look At Seemingly Pro-Tenant Provisions In The Residential Tenancies Act, Mary Truemner
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Explores how the following legislative changes in Ontario systemically affect the power imbalance between landlords and tenants: (1) the abolishment of the default eviction, (2) the return of orders prohibiting rent increases where the landlord has not properly maintained the rental premises, (3) the deeming of a termination date where the tenant has not provided proper notice, and (4) additions to defences to eviction applications.

Behavioral Changes In Aging But Not Young Mice After Neonatal Exposure To The Polybrominated Flame Retardant Decabde, Deborah C. Rice, W. Douglas Thompson, Elizabeth A. Reeve, Kristen D. Onos, Mina Assadollahzadeh, Vincent P. Markowski
Psychology
BACKGROUND: After several decades of commercial use, the flame-retardant chemicals polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their metabolites are pervasive environmental contaminants and are detected in the human body. Decabrominated diphenyl ether (decaBDE) is currently the only PBDE in production in the United States. oBjectives: Little is known about the health effects of decaBDE. In the present study we examined the effects of neonatal decaBDE exposure on behavior in mice at two ages. METHODS: Neonatal male and female C57BL6/J mice were exposed to a daily oral dose of 0, 6, or 20 mg/kg decaBDE from postnatal days 2 through 15. Two …

The Effects Of Sport And Physical Activity On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Youth From Mass Trauma Populations, Sydney De Victoria-Michel
The Effects Of Sport And Physical Activity On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Youth From Mass Trauma Populations, Sydney De Victoria-Michel
Honors Program Theses
This project will focus on the effects of exercise and sport on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD can be debilitating to those who suffer, and incredibly confusing when children are involved. Feelings of rage, anger, depression and anxiety can render individuals incapable of normal day-to-day activities. Traditional treatment options offer individual and group therapy in which the patients simply share their feelings and experiences. Although there have been a vast number of studies and texts published on PTSD sufferers using treatment based on psychotherapy, there has been little done to document effects of exercise and physical activity on PTSD. Despite …

The Mental Health Of Low Socio-Economic Populations, Sarah E. Bumgarner
Honors Program Theses
Depression is an illness that has a negative impact on our society. Depression not only lowers the depressed person's quality of life, but it also negatively impacts people close to the person suffering from this illness. This research is in response to the seriousness of this epidemic, particularly in the low socio-economic status (low SES) population. Topics explored include factors of a low SES environment that influence the onset of depression as well as how those factors relate to the quality of mental health care among depressed people of low SES. A review of the literature identified many barriers to …
An Application Of Input-Output Analysis To Pollution, Paul Burkander
An Application Of Input-Output Analysis To Pollution, Paul Burkander
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Using data on pollution emissions from over 20,000 facilities in the United States, we find most pollution is released by a small number of firms, and that there is no correlation between the amount of pollution released and socioeconomic indicators such as income. We apply Leontief’s method of input output analysis to determine pollution generated both by demand for final goods and inter-sector demand for intermediary goods. We find the sector that generated the most pollution in 2002, both in production of final goods and in use of intermediary goods, was primary nonferrous metal products. The analysis of several sectors, …
Propellant Tank Pressurization Modeling For A Hybrid Rocket, Margaret Mary Fernandez
Propellant Tank Pressurization Modeling For A Hybrid Rocket, Margaret Mary Fernandez
Theses
A basic hybrid rocket oxidizer delivery system utilizes the self-pressurizing nature of a liquid oxidizer at ambient temperatures in conjunction with a non-condensable pressurant to provide a high oxidizer tank pressure that drives liquid oxidizer flow to the combustion chamber. In this study, the oxidizer fluid is nitrous oxide which produces high vapor pressures at ambient temperatures, and helium is the pressurant. The goal of this thesis is to provide a theoretical model that predicts the pressure draining history of the oxidizer tank to within ± 5% of experiment. The validity of simple thermodynamically-based models has not been considered for …
