The reaction of 5,10,15-triarylcorrole with 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole provides another example of corroie ring expansion to give the corresponding 6-azahemiporphycene, a novel porphyrin analogue. The facile oxidation of the corroie ring is a required step for the ring expansion and for this reason the reaction fails in the case of corroles bearing meso-phenyl groups carrying electron-withdrawing substituents. Sterlc requirements also limited the scope of the reaction, which is not successful In the case of 2,6-disubstituted meso-aryl corroles. The occurrence of an initial oxidation is further supported by formation of the 6-azahemiporphycene derivative when the reaction is carried out under the same conditions, …

Maria Anna Acciaioli Tamagnini: O Quadro Da Mulher Feliz, Ellen Thompson Nov 2009

Maria Anna Acciaioli Tamagnini: O Quadro Da Mulher Feliz, Ellen Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Maria Anna Acciaioli Tamagnini was a woman of special circumstances. She enjoyed many opportunities in regards to travel, education, as well as liberty of thought. These factors, in conjunction with her youth and ability to write, placed her in a unique situation in which it was possible to publish a book accessible to a large audience. With these opportunities, she searched for happiness, not only for herself, but for women everywhere. The picture of the Chinese woman that she paints with her poetry in the book Lin-Tchi-Fá: Flor da lotus opens a discourse about the situation of women in Macau, …

The "Principal" Reason Why The Pcaob Is Unconstitutional, Gary S. Lawson Nov 2009

The "Principal" Reason Why The Pcaob Is Unconstitutional, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

The Constitution creates very few federal offices. It creates the House and Senate, the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate, the President, the Vice President, and the Supreme Court--and that is it. The Constitution clearly contemplates that there will be other federal “Officers,” who the President must commission and who Congress may impeach and remove, but the document does not itself create those positions. Instead, it provides general authorization to Congress (in conjunction with the President's presentment power and the Vice President's modest voting authority) to “make all Laws which shall be necessary and …

Economies Of Desire: Fair Use And Marketplace Assumptions, Rebecca Tushnet Nov 2009

Economies Of Desire: Fair Use And Marketplace Assumptions, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

At the moment that “incentives” for creation meet “preferences” for the same, the economic account of copyright loses its explanatory power. This piece explores the ways in which the desire to create can be excessive, beyond rationality, and free from the need for economic incentive. Psychological and sociological concepts can do more to explain creative impulses than classical economics. As a result, a copyright law that treats creative activity as a product of economic incentives can miss the mark and harm what it aims to promote. The idea of abundance—even overabundance—in creativity can help define the proper scope of copyright …

Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera Nov 2009

Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera

Faculty Publications

Text classification categorizes Web documents in large collections into predefined classes based on their contents. Unfortunately, the classification process can be time-consuming and users are still required to spend considerable amount of time scanning through the classified Web documents to identify the ones that satisfy their information needs. In solving this problem, we first introduce CorSum, an extractive single-document summarization approach, which is simple and effective in performing the summarization task, since it only relies on word similarity to generate high-quality summaries. Hereafter, we train a Naïve Bayes classifier on CorSum-generated summaries and verify the classification accuracy using the summaries …

No Beauty We Could Desire-A Lutheran Evaluation Of C. S. Lewis' Sehnsucht, Jonathan Graf Nov 2009

No Beauty We Could Desire-A Lutheran Evaluation Of C. S. Lewis' Sehnsucht, Jonathan Graf

Master of Art Theology Thesis

Together, the experiences and glimpses of what Lewis called' Joy' or Sehnsucht served as the central thread of his life" and provided him with the ontological lens through which he viewed reality. 13 It is the plan of this paper to further examine Lewis' treatment of Sehnsucht" by engaging it in dialogue with a Lutheran theological perspective. In doing so, there are two main objectives that I hope to accomplish. The first objective is to demonstrate that the experience of Sehnsucht should not be merely dismissed or fully embraced; rather, it should be placed within a proper theological narrative that …

Reforming Health Care: The Paradoxes Of Cost, Edward A. Zelinsky Nov 2009

Reforming Health Care: The Paradoxes Of Cost, Edward A. Zelinsky

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

So let me explore with you why my judgment on this score proved inaccurate. In the proverbial nutshell, whatever happens in Washington in the weeks and months ahead, the United States is fated for the indefinite future to conduct a prolonged and difficult national debate on health care.

The reason for this protracted and arduous argument can be summarized in a single word: cost. Yet, paradoxically, the rhetoric of unspecified cost reduction is used to avoid the painful choices needed to prune health care outlays, choices that inevitably involve agonizing denials of medical services in a world of finite resources. …

The Dynamics Of Short-Term Mutual Fund Flows And Returns: A Time-Series And Cross-Sectional Investigation, David Rakowski, Xaioxin Wang Nov 2009

The Dynamics Of Short-Term Mutual Fund Flows And Returns: A Time-Series And Cross-Sectional Investigation, David Rakowski, Xaioxin Wang

Publications

This study analyzes the dynamics of daily mutual fund flows. A Vector Auto Regression (VAR) of flows and returns shows that the behavior of fund investors is more consistent with contrarian rather than momentum characteristics. Past fund flows have a positive impact on future fund returns, with the long-term information effect dominating the transient price-pressure effect. Seasonality in daily flows, such as day-of-week and day-of-month patterns are present, and daily flows are generally mean-reverting. Probit regressions indicate that fund investment objective, marketing policy and level of active management explain cross-sectional variation in the behavioral patterns displayed in daily flows. Our …

Effects Of Stereotyping On Mood, Ovidiu Dobria Nov 2009

Effects Of Stereotyping On Mood, Ovidiu Dobria

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the influence of stereotyping on mood. It was hypothesized that people who were able to solve a problem by applying a stereotype will experience more positive affect compared to people who could not, and that the relationship between stereotyping and mood was mediated by effort and by certainty. 70 undergraduates were asked to predict the academic trajectory of a college applicant based on information provided by a typed college application form and by an essay. For half the participants the applicant was identified as Asian; for the others, the applicant was Anglo. The essay provided information that …
