Background

Leaders are struggling to care for the estimated 143,000,000 orphans and millions more abandoned children worldwide. Global policy makers are advocating that institution-living orphans and abandoned children (OAC) be moved as quickly as possible to a residential family setting and that institutional care be used as a last resort. This analysis tests the hypothesis that institutional care for OAC aged 6–12 is associated with worse health and wellbeing than community residential care using conservative two-tail tests.

Methodology

The Positive Outcomes for Orphans (POFO) study employed two-stage random sampling survey methodology in 6 sites across 5 countries to identify 1,357 …

Legal Regimes And Political Particularism: An Assessment Of The "Legal Families" Theory From The Perspectives Of Comparative Law And Political Economy, John W. Cioffi, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2009

Legal Regimes And Political Particularism: An Assessment Of The "Legal Families" Theory From The Perspectives Of Comparative Law And Political Economy, John W. Cioffi, D. Gordon Smith

BYU Law Review

The “legal families” theory of corporate law and ownership structures pioneered by Rafael La Porta, Florencio Lopez-deSilanes, Andrei Shleifer, and Robert Vishny provides one of the most influential accounts of why “law matters” in shaping economic organization and outcomes. However, the empirical bases and theoretical logic of the theory contain serious flaws and limitations. First, as has been pointed out by a number of critics engaged in this revision, the legal origins literature contains numerous problematic characterizations of substantive law that expose the serious problems of quantitative operationalization of legal rules as a mode of comparative legal analysis. Second, the …

Virtual Intermediaries Ii - Canadian Solutions (Drop Shipments) Compared With Us, Japanese & Eu Approaches, Richard Thompson Ainsworth Dec 2009

Virtual Intermediaries Ii - Canadian Solutions (Drop Shipments) Compared With Us, Japanese & Eu Approaches, Richard Thompson Ainsworth

Faculty Scholarship

Virtual travel agents are opportunistic internet-based travel agents. They are intermediary businesses that create mutually beneficial three-party transactions that secure accommodations for a traveler that: (a) meet the basic needs of the traveler (at a discount), (b) fills vacant room for accommodation retailers with guests that pay below market, but above standard costs, and (c) profit from the extra cash, the margin in the transaction.

The virtual intermediary’s eye is always on the discount and the cash flow. One of the things that catches their attention are the accommodation taxes which they collect from the traveler in advance and remit …

Modification Of A Community Garden To Attract Native Bee Pollinators In Urban San Luis Obispo, California, Jaime Pawelek, G W. Frankie, Robbin W. Thorp, Maggie Przybylski

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Gardens have become increasingly important places for growing nutritional food, for conserving biodiversity, for biological and ecological research and education, and for community gathering. Gardens can also be designed with the goal of attracting aesthetically pleasing wildlife and pollinators, like birds and butterflies, but other important garden visitors, like bees, can also be drawn to specially planned and modified gardens. A community garden in San Luis Obispo, California provided the setting for modification with the goal of attracting native bee pollinators by planting known bee-attractive plants. The local gardeners participated in a survey questionnaire and focused interviews to provide their …

Design And Evaluation Of Three Alternative Keyboard Layouts For A Five-Key Text Entry Technique, Barbara Millet Dec 2009

Design And Evaluation Of Three Alternative Keyboard Layouts For A Five-Key Text Entry Technique, Barbara Millet

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the increase in popularity of handheld devices, text entry on such devices is becoming more difficult due to reduced form factors that limit display size, input modes, and interaction techniques. In an effort to circumvent these issues, research has found that five-key methods are effective for text entry on devices such as in-car navigation systems, television and gaming controllers, wrist watches, and other small devices. Five-key text entry methods use four directional keys to move a selector over an on-screen keyboard and an Enter key for selection. Although other researchers have described five-key character layouts using alphabetical order and …

Biology Of Amacrine Cells And Retinal Ganglion Cells In The Developing Retina, Noelia J. Kunzevitzky Dec 2009

Biology Of Amacrine Cells And Retinal Ganglion Cells In The Developing Retina, Noelia J. Kunzevitzky

Open Access Dissertations

How do neighboring neurons differ? How are they similar? How do they relate to each other? Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and amacrine cells are born during the same developmental window, from the same population of progenitor cells, and some amacrine cells even migrate to the same retinal layer where RGCs reside, the ganglion cell layer. Amacrine cells are presynaptic to RGCs, whose axons subsequently project through the optic nerve and carry visual information to the brain. Although the cell biology of RGCs has been studied in some detail, relatively little is known about the cell and molecular biology of amacrine …

Soothability And Growth In Preterm Neonates, Holly Johanna Diesel Dec 2009

Soothability And Growth In Preterm Neonates, Holly Johanna Diesel

Dissertations

This proposal seeks to understand the relationship between soothability, weight gain and length of hospital stay in premature infants when the infants receive a simple, non-invasive treatment to help them cope with the noxious environment of the special care nursery. Thousands of premature infants are born every year in the United States, and the numbers are increasing. Prematurity is the leading cause of mortality in infants. Despite numerous technological and medical advances in treatment and care, premature infants still have difficulty adapting to life outside the uterus as a result of immature nervous systems and significant differences in the pre …

Secrecy In Committed Relationships Due To Career: A Communication Perspective, Amanda Lassiter Brander Dec 2009

Secrecy In Committed Relationships Due To Career: A Communication Perspective, Amanda Lassiter Brander

Communication

"Professional secrecy, which is mandated in certain careers, seems to affect partners in their committed relationships. Partners of those with work-mandated secrecy may perceive that they enact certain behaviors based upon how they communicate around the imposed secrecy. The communication privacy management theory (CPM) aids in understanding how partners make decisions about how they communicate around secrecy within their relational culture and how they manage dialectical tensions due to work-mandated secrecy. This Human Science study is grounded in constructionism, informed by the theory of social construction of reality, guided by narrative inquiry, and used conversational interviewing and thematic analysis to …

Modeling Discharge Using Hbv In The Imnavait Basin, North Slope, Alaska, Erin Dawn Trochim Dec 2009

Modeling Discharge Using Hbv In The Imnavait Basin, North Slope, Alaska, Erin Dawn Trochim

Engineering

"The Arctic fresh water hydrological cycle is dominated by the melting of the seasonal snow cover and scattered precipitation events during the summer months. Predicting and characterizing potential hydrological response is an important component for engineering infrastructure for the appropriate climatic conditions. A semi-distributed Swedish conceptual model, HBV, has been applied to the Imnavait basin, located in the headwaters of the Kuparuk River on the North Slope of Alaska, to examine runoff during spring and summer months. The methodology began by analyzing the long-term climatic records of the Imnavait basin from 1986 to present. Initial calibration work was completed in …
