The Acidic Domains Of The Toc159 Chloroplast Preprotein Receptor Family Are Instrinsically Disordered Protein Domains, Lynn G.L. Richardson, Masoud Jelokhani-Niaraki, Matthew D. Smith

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The Toc159 family of proteins serve as receptors for chloroplast-destined preproteins. They directly bind to transit peptides, and exhibit preprotein substrate selectivity conferred by an unknown mechanism. The Toc159 receptors each include three domains: C-terminal membrane, central GTPase, and N-terminal acidic (A-) domains. Although the function(s) of the A-domain remains largely unknown, the amino acid sequences are most variable within these domains, suggesting they may contribute to the functional specificity of the receptors.

Results: The physicochemical properties of the A-domains are characteristic of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Using CD spectroscopy we show that the A-domains of two Arabidopsis Toc159 …

Competitive Strategies Adopted By Small- Scale Enterprises In Exhibition Halls In Nairobi, Juliana Mulaa Namada, Vincent Bagire Dec 2009

Competitive Strategies Adopted By Small- Scale Enterprises In Exhibition Halls In Nairobi, Juliana Mulaa Namada, Vincent Bagire

Business Management Review

Small-scale enterprises within Nairobi have witnessed a dramatic change as a result of Business Clustering in premises commonly known as "exhibition halls". This study sought to establish the various competitive strategies adopted and to establish the relationship between factors determining their competitiveness. The firms were sole traders firms, partnerships and family business units. An analysis of the activities of small-scale enterprises revealed the various strategies and relationships that were the determinants of competition. The findings indicate that the enterprises use similar competitive strategies. The strategies adopted were related to pricing and cost management, product and marketing. This study has shed …

Theory Of Thermal Conductivity In Extended-S State Superconductors: Application To Ferropnictides, V. Mishra, A. Vorontsov, P. J. Hirschfeld, I. Vekhter Dec 2009

Theory Of Thermal Conductivity In Extended-S State Superconductors: Application To Ferropnictides, V. Mishra, A. Vorontsov, P. J. Hirschfeld, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

Within a two-band model for the recently discovered ferropnictide materials, we calculate the thermal conductivity assuming general superconducting states of A1g (" s -wave") symmetry, considering both currently popular isotropic "sign-changing" s states and states with strong anisotropy, including those which manifest nodes or deep minima of the order parameter. We consider both intraband and interband disorder scattering effects, and show that in situations where a low-temperature linear- T term exists in the thermal conductivity, it is not always "universal" as in d -wave superconductors. We discuss the conditions under which such a term can disappear, as well as how …

Relative Height And Weight Among Children And Adolescents Of Rural Southwestern Nigeria, Omolola Ayoola, Kara Ebersole, Olayemi O. Omotade, Bamidele O. Tayo, William R. Brieger, Kabiru Salami, Lara R. Dugas, Richard S. Cooper, Amy Luke Dec 2009

Relative Height And Weight Among Children And Adolescents Of Rural Southwestern Nigeria, Omolola Ayoola, Kara Ebersole, Olayemi O. Omotade, Bamidele O. Tayo, William R. Brieger, Kabiru Salami, Lara R. Dugas, Richard S. Cooper, Amy Luke

Faculty Publications

Background: There are few data describing the relative height and weight patterns of children and adolescents in rural Nigeria, despite a prevalence of stunting of over 38% among children younger than 5 years. Aim: The present study documented the height and weight patterns relative to international standards among children and adolescents aged 520 years in rural Nigeria. Subjects and methods: Children 520 years of age were enrolled from two rural villages. Height and weight were measured; body composition was estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. z-scores and centiles for height and body mass index were calculated; prevalences of low relative height …

Family Choices For The Career Woman In The Twenty-First Century, Gianna M. Koné Dec 2009

Family Choices For The Career Woman In The Twenty-First Century, Gianna M. Koné

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study poses the question, "ls it possible for the twenty-first century woman to successfully integrate career and family, and if so, how?" Feminine identity, role, and fulfillment are changing and continue to transform in modern society. Today the twenty-first century woman struggles to integrate career, family, and home successfully while understanding the passion or driving force in her life. This research explores gender roles in order to understand, update, and find order in a chaotic world. Feminist thought and chaos theory are examined to see whether or not it is possible to integrate family and career in the new …

Compact Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Display With Occlusion Support, Jannick Rolland, Ozan Cakmakci, Yonggang Ha Dec 2009

Compact Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Display With Occlusion Support, Jannick Rolland, Ozan Cakmakci, Yonggang Ha

UCF Patents

An optical system, apparatus and method are capable of mutual occlusions. The core of the system is a spatial light modulator (SLM) which allows users to block or pass certain parts of a scene which is viewed through the head worn display. An objective lens images the scene onto the SLM md the modulated image is mapped back to the original scene via an eyepiece. The invention combines computer-generated imagery with the modulated version of the scene to form the final image a user would see. The invention is a breakthrough in display hardware from a mobility (i.e. compactness), resolution, …

Institutional Racism, Ice Raids, And Immigration Reform, Bill Ong Hing Dec 2009

Institutional Racism, Ice Raids, And Immigration Reform, Bill Ong Hing

University of San Francisco Law Review

Although immigration raids are not a recent phenomenon, this Article focuses on a few egregious ICE raids that occurred after President Bush’s push for immigration reform in 2004. the ICE operations targeted Latinos—usually Mexicans. The exceptions were Chinese restaurants and other businesses that relied on workers of color. That racial effect is the focus of this Article and the basis for advocating that both immigration policies and ICE enforcement need to be rethought.

Ethics Of Human Enhancement: An Executive Summary, Fritz Allhoff, Patrick Lin, Jesse Steinberg Dec 2009

Ethics Of Human Enhancement: An Executive Summary, Fritz Allhoff, Patrick Lin, Jesse Steinberg

Philosophy

With multi-year funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), a team of researchers has just released a comprehensive report detailing ethical issues arising from human enhancement (Allhoff et al. 2009). While we direct the interested reader to that (much longer) report, we also thank the editors of this journal for the invitation to provide an executive summary thereof. This summary highlights key results from each section of that report and does so in a self-standing way; in other words, this summary presupposes no familiarity with the report and offers the opportunity to gain quick familiarity with its most central …
