Sustainability In Practice: A Study Of The Sustainable Behaviors Of Students At The Univeristy Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Audrey Glor Dec 2009

Sustainability In Practice: A Study Of The Sustainable Behaviors Of Students At The Univeristy Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Audrey Glor

Honors Theses

Sustainable behaviors, such as recycling, are increasingly important as the world's population continues to rise. While many attempts have been made at various institutions, recycling on a grand scale has yet to become a social reality. This study was designed to look at the three broad factors influencing an individual's recycling behavior: social pressure, knowledge base, and convenience. It was hypothesized that social pressure would have the greatest influence on an individual's recycling behavior, while not overlooking the importance of the other two factors. A questionnaire was employed to collect data from a sample population at the University of Tennessee …

Studies On The Performance And Impact Of Channel Estimation In Mimo And Ofdm Systems, Michael David Larsen Dec 2009

Studies On The Performance And Impact Of Channel Estimation In Mimo And Ofdm Systems, Michael David Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

The need for reliable, high-throughput, mobile wireless communication technologies has never been greater as increases in the demand for on-the-go access to information, entertainment, and other electronic services continues. Two such technologies, which are at the forefront of current research efforts, are orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, their union being known simply as MIMO-OFDM. The successful performance of these technologies depends upon the availability of accurate information concerning the wireless communication channel. In this dissertation, several issues related to quality of this channel state information (CSI) are studied. Specifically, the first part of this dissertation …

Social Network Analysis And Its Applications To Organization And Management Research, Dominik Batorski, Michał Zdziarski

European Management Studies

In the article we present methods used in the analysis of social networks and examples of their application to organizations and management research. Methods applied in social network analysis are considered quantitative. We present basic assumptions and characteristics of social network research, examples of research data and problems, methods of their analysis, and examples of applications. We describe applications of social network analysis in researching innovations, social capital, power, corporate governance, communication and managerial careers.

Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black Dec 2009

Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black

Journal of Youth Development

The National Preparedness Guidelines (2007) state, “as uniformed responders account for less than 1% of the total U.S. population, it is clear that citizens must be better prepared, trained, and practiced on how best to take care of themselves and assist others in those first crucial hours during and after a catastrophic incident.” This is increasingly more evident due to recent disasters such as hurricane Katrina. The Alert, Evacuate and Shelter (AES) program identified and trained youth/adult teams to use geospatial technology to map shelter locations and evacuation routes. Training began with team building activities to strengthen and build youth/adult …

Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown Dec 2009

Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Cerebral lateralization refers to the division of information processing in either hemisphere of the brain and is a ubiquitous trait among vertebrates and invertebrates. Given its widespread occurrence, it is likely that cerebral lateralization confers a fitness advantage. It has been hypothesized that this advantage takes the form of enhanced cognitive function, potentially via a dual processing mechanism whereby each hemisphere can be used to process specific types of information without contralateral interference. Here, we examined the influence of lateralization on problem solving by Australian parrots. The first task, a pebble-seed discrimination test, was designed for small parrot species that …

Incorporating Remotely Sensed Tree Canopy Cover Data Into Broad Scale Assessments Of Wildlife Habitat Distribution And Conservation, Sebastián Martinuzzi, Lee A. Vierling, William A. Gould, Kerri T. Vierling, Andrew T. Hudak Dec 2009

Incorporating Remotely Sensed Tree Canopy Cover Data Into Broad Scale Assessments Of Wildlife Habitat Distribution And Conservation, Sebastián Martinuzzi, Lee A. Vierling, William A. Gould, Kerri T. Vierling, Andrew T. Hudak

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Remote sensing provides critical information for broad scale assessments of wildlife habitat distribution and conservation. However, such efforts have been typically unable to incorporate information about vegetation structure, a variable important for explaining the distribution of many wildlife species. We evaluated the consequences of incorporating remotely sensed information about horizontal vegetation structure into current assessments of wildlife habitat distribution and conservation. For this, we integrated the new NLCD tree canopy cover product into the US GAP Analysis database, using avian species and the finished Idaho GAP Analysis as a case study. We found: (1) a 15-68% decrease in the extent …
