Under What Circumstances Do People Drown? Encoding The Fourth Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn Nov 2009

Under What Circumstances Do People Drown? Encoding The Fourth Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the current study was to identify under what circumstances people drown using the 4W model (Avramidis, Butterly, Llewellyn, 2007). We used qualitative content analysis to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semi-structured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Results confirmed that drowning incidents can occur at any time, although most likely during daylight, and during any season of the year, with summer most common. We observed that drowning can occur after engaging in just about any form of human activity, on, near, above or under the surface of a liquid (mainly …

Cinematherapy With Preadolescents Experiencing Parental Divorce: A Collective Case Study, Emily Marsick

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

A multiple-case study of the use of cinematherapy in six sessions of individual therapy each with three preadolescent aged children who were experiencing parental divorce was conducted. Children were shown film clips from six different films over six weeks of individual therapy. Questions were used to facilitate discussion with the children and children were given the opportunity to respond to the film clips expressively, by using their choice of art, creative writing, story-telling, and/or drama. Each child was interviewed one to two weeks after the intervention. Multiple themes emerged across the cases, including the use of films for: assessment of …

Nebraska Immigration: Deliberative Polling And Civic Engagement On Broadcast And New Media Coverage, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt, David C. Ogden, Hugh J. Reilly

Communication Faculty Publications

Data were analyzed from an October 2007 deliberative poll event in Omaha, Nebraska. The focus of pre-event survey questions was on the usefulness of media sources on the coverage of the global immigration issue. The goal of the project was to promote civic engagement of citizens on an important public issue. The focus of post-event survey questions was on attention paid to media. Additionally, a post-event focus group explored public opinion on credibility of various news sources. While the deliberative poll produced some evidence of short-term effects in terms of citizens learning about the immigration issue, attitudes about media credibility …

Computer/Video Games As A Play Therapy Tool In Reducing Emotional Disturbances In Children, Kevin Boyd Hull

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of computer/video games as a play therapy tool for children suffering from an emotional disturbance of sadness (pervasive feelings of irritability, loss of enjoyment in activities previously enjoyed, withdrawal from friends or family, decline in school performance, and hopelessness). Children who suffer from emotional disturbances have problems functioning in school, in social and family settings, as well as transitioning into adulthood. Play therapy is an effective and creative way to work with children with emotional disturbances. Play becomes a way for the child to communicate and heal. Computer/video games are …

God’S Shield: The Relationship Between God Attachment, Relationship Satisfaction, And Adult Child Of An Alcoholic (Acoa) Status In A Sample Of Evangelical Graduate Counseling Students, Karin Mcpeak Dumont

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The conceptual framework for this study focused on adult attachments and adult relationship satisfaction being defined and supported by initial attachment style. The literature review consistently revealed that individuals with a secure attachment style report higher relationship satisfaction than individuals with an insecure style. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of attachment to God and a history of an alcoholic parent on adult relationship satisfaction while controlling for romantic attachment. A total of 267 participants from an evangelical graduate program in counseling were administered the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST), Attachment to God Inventory (AGI), …

Management Accounting And Control: Lessons For And From The World's Tiniest Businesses, Srikant M. Datar, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Jane Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Microbusiness owners often lack the knowledge and skills--the human capital--necessary to make effective use of financial capital. They lack even the basic knowledge about how a loan is obtained and repaid and how debt can be used for business development. Most microfinance institutions have developed training that teaches clients about the timing and amount of repayment, the need for financial discipline to meet the repayment schedule, and the importance of investing the loan in working capital or productive assets rather than using it for household consumption. Although this training is essential for successful loan management from the institution's perspective, it often …

Adaptive Distributed Fair Scheduling For Multiple Channels In Wireless Sensor Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins, James W. Fonda Nov 2009

Adaptive Distributed Fair Scheduling For Multiple Channels In Wireless Sensor Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins, James W. Fonda

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel adaptive and distributed fair scheduling (ADFS) scheme for wireless sensor networks (WSN) in the presence of multiple channels (MC-ADFS) is developed. The proposed MC-ADFS increases available network capacity and focuses on quality-of-service (QoS) issues. when nodes access a shared channel, the proposed MC-ADFS allocates the channel bandwidth proportionally to the packet's weight which indicates the priority of the packet's flow. The packets are dynamically assigned to channels based on the packet weight and current channel utilization. The dynamic assignment of channels is facilitated by use of receiver-based allocation and alternative routes. Moreover, MC-ADFS allows the dynamic allocation of …

National Trends In The United States Of America Physician Assistant Workforce From 1980 To 2007, Xiaoxing Z. He, Ellen Cyran, Mark J. Salling

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The physician assistant (PA) profession is a nationally recognized medical profession in the United States of America (USA). However, relatively little is known regarding national trends of the PA workforce. We examined the 1980-2007 USA Census data to determine the demographic distribution of the PA workforce and PA-to-population relationships. Maps were developed to provide graphical display of the data. All analyses were adjusted for the complex census design and analytical weights provided by the Census Bureau. In 1980 there were about 29,120 PAs, 64% of which were males. By contrast, in 2007 there were approximately 97,721 PAs with more than …

The Role Of Extrafloral Nectaries And Saponins In Plantherbivore Interactions Of Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2009, Kevin Davis Nov 2009

The Role Of Extrafloral Nectaries And Saponins In Plantherbivore Interactions Of Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2009, Kevin Davis

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Trees of the Neotropical genus Inga are noted for the use of extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) and secondary compounds to protect against herbivores. For Inga sierrae, the production of Extra-EFNs (EEFNs) has been suggested to confer fitness on fledgling leaves, while the role of saponins on herbivory remains unclear. This study investigates the potential trade-off between EEFN and saponin production and its effect on herbivory. I recorded percent herbivory on fledgling leaves during a three week period and measured saponin contents for I. sierrae trees at two different study sites at 1525m in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Encounter surveys were conducted to …

Duet Response Songs And Territorial Defense In The Gray-Breasted Wood Wren (Henicorhina Leucostica Troglodytidae), November 2009, Ali Corley Nov 2009

Duet Response Songs And Territorial Defense In The Gray-Breasted Wood Wren (Henicorhina Leucostica Troglodytidae), November 2009, Ali Corley

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bird song serves a wide variety of functions. Avian duetting is one form of bird song that is especially common in the tropics but whose function is still not well understood. The Joint Territorial Defense and Acoustic Mate Guarding hypotheses explain duetting as either a cooperative form of song, in which a pair is working together to accomplish a common goal, or conflicting form of song, in which each bird in a pair is singing for individual motives. Under Joint Territorial Defense theory, pairs sing duets to better defend their territories. The Acoustic Mate Guarding theory predicts that pairs sing …

To Build Resilience: Leader Influence On Mental Hardiness, Paul T. Bartone, Charles L. Barry, Robert E. Armstrong

Defense Horizons

The military profession is inherently stressful and is getting more so for U.S. troops, who are deploying more often and for longer periods of time on missions that are multifaceted, changeable, and ambiguous. Such stressful conditions can lead to a range of health problems and performance decrements even among leaders. But not everyone reacts in negative ways to environmental stress. Most people remain healthy and continue to perform well even in the face of high stress levels. While much attention in recent years has focused on identifying and treating stress-related breakdowns such as post-traumatic stress disorder, scant investment has gone …

Revisiting Downs' Issue-Attention Cycle: International Terrorism And U.S. Public Opinion, Karen K. Petersen Nov 2009

Revisiting Downs' Issue-Attention Cycle: International Terrorism And U.S. Public Opinion, Karen K. Petersen

Journal of Strategic Security

Lamenting the lack of public awareness of international events and U.S. foreign policy is not a particularly novel exercise; yet, explaining the process by which issues enter and exit the public realm remains a challenging endeavor. Despite contributions from researchers working in international relations and mass communication, explaining public inattentiveness continues to vex scholars. However, in his article, "Up and Down with Ecology: The 'Issue-Attention Cycle,'" Anthony Downs provides a parsimonious and tractable model of public opinion that can be applied to foreign policy issues.1 While Downs concerns himself exclusively with domestic issues, particularly environmental issues, his model has thepotential …

Sexual Favoritism: A Cause Of Action Under A "Sex-Plus" Theory, Susan J. Best Nov 2009

Sexual Favoritism: A Cause Of Action Under A "Sex-Plus" Theory, Susan J. Best

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Comment avers that sexual favoritism is a form of "sex-plus" discrimination. Traditionally, sexual favoritism has been argued as being a form of sexual harassment. Therefore, in order to be successful in a claim for sexual favoritism, a plaintiff must prove sexual harassment. The courts' treatment of sexual favoritism as sexual harassment is problematic for two reasons. First, placing the burden of proof needed for sexual harassment--i.e., proof that the defendant has created a hostile work environment--on plaintiffs injured by sexual favoritism is excessively high. Secondly, because there is no claim under the theory of sexual harassment for instances of …

The Marriage Contract In Fine Art, Benjamin A. Templin Nov 2009

The Marriage Contract In Fine Art, Benjamin A. Templin

Northern Illinois University Law Review

From the fifteenth- to eighteenth-centuries, artists across Europe and England painted a scene depicting the negotiation of a marriage contract. In nearly every painting, a notary sits or stands at a table, quill in hand, memorializing the details of the dowry transfer. Some artists celebrated the accord, while others condemned arranged marriages made for purposes of status and money. Interestingly, at the same time the artists painted, massive changes occurred in the law and political philosophy aimed at changing some of the inherent problems in marriage law, such as the rights of women, the influence of parents, and divorce. To …

Performance Measurement Of Supply Chain Management: A Decision Framework For Evaluating And Selecting Supplier Performance In A Supply Chain, A. D. Sarode, P. M. Khodke Nov 2009

Performance Measurement Of Supply Chain Management: A Decision Framework For Evaluating And Selecting Supplier Performance In A Supply Chain, A. D. Sarode, P. M. Khodke

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Supply Chain Management (SCM) has gained significance as one of the 21st century manufacturing paradigms for improving organizational competitiveness. Supply chain ensures improved efficiency and effectiveness of not only product transfer, but also information sharing between the complex hierarchies of all the tiers. The literature on SCM that deals with strategies and technologies for effectively managing a supply chain is quite vast. In recent years, organizational performance measurement (PM) and metrics have received much attention from researchers and practitioners. Performance measurement and metrics have an important role to play in setting objectives, evaluating performance, and determining future courses of actions. …

Review Of Interventions For Parental Depression From Toddlerhood To Adolescence, R. C. Boyd, Jane Gillham Nov 2009

Review Of Interventions For Parental Depression From Toddlerhood To Adolescence, R. C. Boyd, Jane Gillham

Psychology Faculty Works

Because of the recurrent course, significant burden, and intergenerational impact of depression, there is a great need for interventions for depressed parents and their children. This article reviews eight interventions that 1) aim to impact the functioning and well-being of 18-month to 18-year old children of depressed parents and 2) have been evaluated in controlled studies. The interventions are described and the empirical evidence of their efficacy is reviewed and critiqued. Existing research points to several promising intervention strategies, such as psychoeducation about parental depression, addressing parenting in adult depression treatment, promoting positive parent-child interactions, and teaching coping skills to …

The Single-Purpose Container Exception: A Logical Extension Of The Plain View Doctrine Made Unworkable, Daniel Kegl Nov 2009

The Single-Purpose Container Exception: A Logical Extension Of The Plain View Doctrine Made Unworkable, Daniel Kegl

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Comment examines the single-purpose container exception to the Fourth Amendment's warrant requirement. Since the exception was recognized in Arkansas v. Sanders and revisited in Robbins v. California, the federal circuits have not agreed as to what evidence courts can consider when deciding whether or not to apply the exception to a particular container. While some circuits allow specialized police knowledge and the circumstances surrounding the container's discovery to be considered, most disallow this evidence in making the same determination. As a result, the continued use of the single-purpose container exception results in an inconsistent application of the Fourth Amendment …
