Forest City: The City On The Hill, Teresa Pietsch Jan 2009

Forest City: The City On The Hill, Teresa Pietsch

Graduate Research Papers

Studying the local community helps students learn more about the place they live. It helps them comprehend the past, perform in the present, and predict the future. Understanding its history and people builds a sense of pride and belonging. Currently, the local community is studied by the third grade at Forest City Elementary. Teaching and learning about the community requires careful selection and presentation of materials. Students learn through narratives, primary sources, cultural universals, and the interaction between new sources of information and prior experiences. Unfortunately, information about the community of Forest City is lacking. Material is not easily accessible …

Using Online Rubrics To Make Project Grading More Standardized And Efficient, Sandra Ann Groff O'Brien

Graduate Research Papers

Rubrics make assessing student work standard and efficient, and they help teachers justify to parents and others the grades that they assign to students. This research project investigated the possibility of improving grading efficiency in project-based classes using online rubrics. Two research questions were studied: 1. Would the teachers feel that using a standards-based rubric with predetermined grading criteria be more efficient in assessing their student projects and save them time in grading? 2. Would the use of technology in the grading process be of enough value to the teachers that they would be interested in using a web-based rubric …

Sign Language And Gestures In Young Early Childhood, Donna Uhlenberg

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature and research review is to understand better the use of sign language and the importance of gestures to children in young early childhood. Children, even at the earliest ages, begin the process of effectively communicating with people and the environment around them. The beginning forms of communication originate in the form of body movements, also known as gestures. Sign language has been present in recorded history since the 16th century, and the first written records of it began in the 17th century. Sign language is most widely used with individuals who have hearing or speech …

Constituent Development Officer Staff Retention: An Examination Of The Pertinent Literature Of The Relationship Between Methods Of Staff Retention And Morale With Constituent Development Officers At The University Of Northern Iowa Foundation, Jim Jermier

Graduate Research Papers

The ability to establish and maintain relationships with donors in order to bring them closer to and ultimately support the organization he or she represents are key skill sets for a development officer to possess. If a university is fortunate enough to have a constituent development officer (CDO) who demonstrates these strengths, they should have a plan in place to retain that individual. However, according to Hansen (2007), only 16% of senior HR executives surveyed by Towers Perrin have a senior talent management position to focus specifically on the organization's talent strategy. By definition, the talent strategy would include strategic …

Teenage Consumer Behaviour: Factors That Influence Their Purchase Decisions Towards Clothing Brands., Regina Baylor

Theses

This study explores the perceptions held by Irish teenage consumers in relation to branded clothing and investigates the different factors which influence them in their decision-making process. In seeking to expand the understanding of teenage consumer behaviour and the factors that influence their clothing brand choices, this study focuses predominantly on the susceptibility of teenage consumers to peer and reference group influence. This study examines the social and psychological concepts of attributing status, social value and specific purchase intent to clothing brands in relation to teenage consumer decision-making.

This study is therefore interested in exploring the hypothesis that branded clothing …

Musical Chairs Mortality Functions: Density-Dependent Deaths Caused By Competition For Unguarded Refuges, Jameal F. Samhouri, Richard R. Vance, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele Jan 2009

Musical Chairs Mortality Functions: Density-Dependent Deaths Caused By Competition For Unguarded Refuges, Jameal F. Samhouri, Richard R. Vance, Graham E. Forrester, Mark A. Steele

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Structural refuges within which prey can escape from predators can be an important limiting resource for the prey. In a manner that resembles the childhood game of musical chairs, many prey species rapidly retreat to shared, unguarded refuges whenever a predator threatens, and only when refuges are relatively abundant do all prey individuals actually escape. The key feature of this process is that the per capita prey mortality rate depends on the ratio of prey individuals to refuges. We introduce a new class of mortality functions with this feature and then demonstrate statistically that they describe field mortality data from …

Optimization And Characterization Of Lab-On-A-Chip Elements: Microfluidic Chambers And Microneedles, Puneet Khanna Jan 2009

Optimization And Characterization Of Lab-On-A-Chip Elements: Microfluidic Chambers And Microneedles, Puneet Khanna

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work, MEMS based fabrication is used to engineer multifaceted enhancements to microfluidic systems such as lab-on-a-chip devices. Two specific elements of microfluidic systems are the focus of this study: microfluidic chambers and microneedles. Microfluidic chambers, which are back-end passive elements, via proposed material and structural modifications, are shown to exhibit reduced non-specific DNA binding and enable increased cell lysis efficiency. Microneedles, which are front-end interfacing elements, have been fabricated in silicon and in silicon dioxide varieties. The geometry of silicon microneedles has been varied via DRIE processing to yield sharpened tips. Sharpening of microneedle tips provides reduced skin …

Facial Skin Motion Properties From Video: Modeling And Applications, Vasant Manohar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Deformable modeling of facial soft tissues have found use in application domains such as human-machine interaction for facial expression recognition. More recently, such modeling techniques have been used for tasks like age estimation and person identification. This dissertation is focused on development of novel image analysis algorithms to follow facial strain patterns observed through video recording of faces in expressions. Specifically, we use the strain pattern extracted from non-rigid facial motion as a simplified and adequate way to characterize the underlying material properties of facial soft tissues. Such an approach has several unique features. Strain pattern instead of the image …

Bound By Injustice: Challenging The Use Of Shackles On Incarcerated Pregnant Women, Dana Sussman Jan 2009

Bound By Injustice: Challenging The Use Of Shackles On Incarcerated Pregnant Women, Dana Sussman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The use of shackles to restrain a pregnant woman during the birthing process is a barbaric practice that needlessly inflicts excruciating pain and humiliation. It is widely condemned by members of the international community, including leading medical and public health associations. Although human rights advocates have effected significant policy change in the past ten years to eliminate the use of shackles on women in labor, it remains routine practice in many American prisons and jails. Reproductive rights advocates should consider this a reproductive justice issue and build on the gains of the human rights community to bring legal claims challenging …

Describing Patents As Real Options, Christopher A. Cotropia Jan 2009

Describing Patents As Real Options, Christopher A. Cotropia

Law Faculty Publications

This Article continues the use of real options in patent law by taking a step back. The Article proceeds in three parts. Part II describes the concept of real options and catalogs the existing economics and law literature discussing patents as real options. The Article then lays a foundation for previous and future discussions by describing in detail how patents are like real options. Specifically, Part III. identifies the particular patent doctrines that make up the common components of a real option-the option price, the exercise price, the expiration date, and the value of the underlying asset. This descriptive analysis …

Modernizing Patent Law's Inequitable Conduct Doctrine, Christopher A. Cotropia Jan 2009

Modernizing Patent Law's Inequitable Conduct Doctrine, Christopher A. Cotropia

Law Faculty Publications

This Article's main finding is that the inequitable conduct doctrine has the ability to improve patent quality as long as the inherent tendency to overcomply with the doctrine by overloading the USPTO with information is kept in check. The Article reaches this conclusion by proceeding in five parts. Part II describes the current thinking on the inequitable conduct doctrine, with particular focus on the major critiques of the doctrine and proposed legislative and administrative responses. Part III of the Article begins the construction of a fundamental, conceptual framework for the doctrine by explaining how it impacts both patent quality and …

Recent Developments In Patent Law, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga Jan 2009

Recent Developments In Patent Law, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga

Law Faculty Publications

In the last year, the landscape of patent law was altered by court opinions from the Supreme Court and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as in opinions rendered by the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (hereafter BP AI) at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, patent reform legislation was introduced that could have shaken up patent practice even further. Although none of the reform proposals were passed, revised versions of these legislative initiatives have already been introduced in 2009. This brief write-up summarizes many (but by no means all) of the …
