Toward A Better Competition Policy For The Media: The Challenge Of Developing Antitrust Policies That Support The Media Sector's Unique Role In Our Democracy, Maurice Stucke, Allen Grunes Nov 2009

Toward A Better Competition Policy For The Media: The Challenge Of Developing Antitrust Policies That Support The Media Sector's Unique Role In Our Democracy, Maurice Stucke, Allen Grunes

Scholarly Works

It is difficult to formulate meaningful competition policy when there is a fierce debate over the current competitiveness of the media industry. After addressing the importance of the marketplace of ideas in our democracy, our article examines the current state of the media industry, including the response of traditional media to audience declines, the growth of new media, the impact of media consolidation (including its impact on minority and women ownership), and the role of the Internet. In response to recent calls for liberalizing cross-ownership rules to protect traditional media, our article outlines why conventional antitrust policy is difficult to …

In Support Of A Cashless Future, Researchers Recreate A Cash-Like Experience, Knowledge@Smu Nov 2009

In Support Of A Cashless Future, Researchers Recreate A Cash-Like Experience, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

The mobile phone is piece of technology so loved, that some have referred to it as a “phantom limb”. To personalise and get the most out of this “limb”, people have been known to spend lots of time and money, decorating their precious phones with screen protectors, fancy ringtones, wallpapers, themes and ‘apps’. Many have even been caught fiddling with this device while driving! With a national mobile penetration rate of close to 140 percent (which suggests some people may have more “limbs” than others), it seems only natural to fantasise about incorporating the mobile phone into other favourite pastimes, …

Entering The Lion’S Den: Technology Entrepreneurs Need A Global View And Action Plan, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

How many technology companies are confident enough to venture outside the sheltered environment of their home country to compete against the market leaders in their own turf? Not many, especially for the new or young business ventures. Many avoid entering "the lion’s den", so to speak, for fear that they will be eaten alive. Yet, not many realise that if they cannot survive the “lion’s den”, they may not last very long within their own nest, shares seasoned venture capitalist Gideon Tolkowsky.

Inter-Disciplinary Approaches To International Law: Legal & Non-Legal Rituals For Genocide Survivors, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Legal processes, however powerful and authoritative they might be, are not cure-alls. Case in point: victims of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia are still seeking healing and closure thirty years on. While the international tribunal might be able to hold the perpetrators accountable, there is a disconnect between what this international legal procedure can achieve, and what the victims want, notes SMU law professor Mahdev Mohan. To help the victims, he said non-legal actions are needed.

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D. Nov 2009

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper estimates the macroeconomic effects of increased spending on defense and internal security necessitated by the decade-long Maoist insurgency in Nepal. An investment equation is specified to examine the relationship between defense spending and investment. The estimation results indicate that there is a significant negative effect of defense spending on investment. A simple Harrod-Domar growth relationship is used to estimate the effect of the increase in defense spending on economic growth. This analysis suggests that between 1996 and 2006, the opportunity cost of the conflict in terms of lost output has been about 3 percent of Nepal’s current GDP.

Exploring The First Year Of Teaching Through Focus Group Discussions, Ethno-Mimesis, A/R/Tography, And Performance Ethnography, Marilyn F. Cullen-Reavill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States is focusing on the important and worthy goal of no child being left behind and in order to accomplish this goal, we must ensure that no teacher, including the first-year teacher, is left behind. This study explores the experiences of three first-year teachers on a monthly basis and uncovers the successes, challenges, supports, and needs that they encounter.

Five research questions guided this study: 1. What are the experiences of a group of first-year teachers and in what ways were these experiences challenging, supportive, or detrimental? 2. What are the benefits for the first-year teachers in meeting …

Effects Of Participation In Inquiry Science Workshops And Follow-Up Activities On Middle School Science Teachers' Content Knowledge, Teacher-Held Misconceptions, And Classroom Practices, Linda F. Cepeda Nov 2009

Effects Of Participation In Inquiry Science Workshops And Follow-Up Activities On Middle School Science Teachers' Content Knowledge, Teacher-Held Misconceptions, And Classroom Practices, Linda F. Cepeda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An important aspect of developing science literacy for all students is developing science-literate teachers. With the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act, many middle school teachers found themselves in a position where they were no longer qualified to teach middle school science. This study was designed to help science teachers increase their science content knowledge, identify and resolve misconceptions/errors they may have, and assist them in their teaching by providing strategies for inquiry-based teaching, science laboratory exercises, and science equipment.

Teachers enrolled in biology courses offered by the Rocky Mountain Middle School Math and Science Partnership participated in …

Gaming The Network Poetic: Networking And Code In Art Games, Joshua A. Fishburn Nov 2009

Gaming The Network Poetic: Networking And Code In Art Games, Joshua A. Fishburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Videogames have historically used networking either to connect players for competition or cooperation or to provide an ephemeral connection to allow the upload, comparison, or assessment of single-player achievement data. The majority of videogames take place on a screen and on established platforms each of which have physical, technical, and sociocultural constraints that dictate how a player will interact. Recent art games, such as those by Jason Rohrer and the Atari VCS games of Ian Bogost highlight experiments in a more focused use of the medium from concept to interaction, both between the player and the software but also foregrounding …

Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks Nov 2009

Exhaustive Exercise Training Enhances Aerobic Capacity In American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), John Eme, Tomasz Owerkowicz, June Gwalthney, Jason M. Blank, Bryan C. Rourke, James W. Hicks

Biological Sciences

The oxygen transport system in mammals is extensively remodelled in response to repeated bouts of activity, but many reptiles appear to be ‘metabolically inflexible’ in response to exercise training. A recent report showed that estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) increase their maximum metabolic rate in response to exhaustive treadmill training, and in the present study, we confirm this response in another crocodilian, American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). We further specify the nature of the crocodilian training response by analysing effects of training on aerobic [citrate synthase (CS)] and anaerobic [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] enzyme activities in selected skeletal muscles, …

Reduced Uncertainty Of Ground Motion Prediction Equations Through Bayesian Variance Analysis, Robb E.S. Moss Nov 2009

Reduced Uncertainty Of Ground Motion Prediction Equations Through Bayesian Variance Analysis, Robb E.S. Moss

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A ground motion prediction equation estimates the mean and variance of ground shaking with distance from an earthquake source. Current relationships use regression techniques that treat the input variables or parameters as exact, neglecting the uncertainties associated with the measurement of shear wave velocity, moment magnitude, and site-to-source distance. This parameter uncertainty propagates through the regression procedure and results in model uncertainty that overestimates the inherent variability of the ground motion. This report discusses methods of estimating the statistical uncertainty of the input parameters, and procedures for incorporating the parameter uncertainty into the regression of ground motion data using a …

The Power Of Dance: How Dance And Emotion Connect, Krista Blankenship, Chastin Oliver Nov 2009

The Power Of Dance: How Dance And Emotion Connect, Krista Blankenship, Chastin Oliver

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to test whether or not audiences could experience emotions portrayed by dance performances. The researchers hypothesized that if the audience can identify the emotion being expressed, then they would experience that same emotion. The researchers also predicted that music would cause a greater level of emotional reaction to the performance. The participants watched two dance videos, one portraying a sad emotion and the other a love/passion emotion and rated their emotional reactions. After analyzing the data, the hypothesis was proven only partially correct. The participants who correctly identified the emotion portrayed in the video …

Impact Of Mad Money Stock Recommendations: Merging Financial And Marketing Perspectives, Ekaterina Karniouchina, William L. Moore, Kevin J. Cooney Nov 2009

Impact Of Mad Money Stock Recommendations: Merging Financial And Marketing Perspectives, Ekaterina Karniouchina, William L. Moore, Kevin J. Cooney

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This article relies on advertising and persuasive communications theories to uncover persistent variations in investor response to television stock recommendations targeting naive investors. The authors use an event study methodology to determine the size of the next-day abnormal market reaction to recommendations on Mad Money with Jim Cramer. Although viewers are actively looking for recommendations, the results show that any individual recommendation is still subject to many of the same communication challenges as traditional advertisements. A regression analysis finds that traditional advertising variables, such as message length, recency-primacy effects, information clutter, and source credibility, influence the size of the market …

Copyright Consultations Submission, Canadian Association Of Research Libraries, Brent Roe Nov 2009

Copyright Consultations Submission, Canadian Association Of Research Libraries, Brent Roe

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This submission details reforms that the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) believes are necessary to balance fairly the interests of copyright holders and users of copyrighted materials so as both to encourage creation by ensuring payment for use and to safeguard equitable public access to and use of ideas. New copyright legislation must not restrict fair dealing. It must not make it illegal to circumvent a digital lock to use a copyrighted item for purposes that do not infringe copyright (doing so is not required by Canada‘s treaty obligations) or to convert a work into any format that is …

Innovative Public Engagement Practices And Partnerships: Lifting Stakeholder Voices In Education Accountability Policy, Monica Wills, Curtis Brewer, Robert Knoeppel, James Witte, Roy Pargas, Jane Clark Lindle Nov 2009

Innovative Public Engagement Practices And Partnerships: Lifting Stakeholder Voices In Education Accountability Policy, Monica Wills, Curtis Brewer, Robert Knoeppel, James Witte, Roy Pargas, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

In 2008, due to increasing stakeholder dissatisfaction with assessment results and school report cards, South Carolina revised its 1998 Educational Accountability Act and required public engagement with stakeholders including parents/guardians, educators, business and community leaders, and taxpayers. The legislation created partnerships between SC‟s Education Oversight Committee (EOC) and Clemson University. The project also brought together within the university the fields of Applied Sociology, Computer Science, and Educational Leadership. The project involved mixed methods using phone/web surveys with focus groups eliciting perceptions from key stakeholders and under-represented voices in the surveys.

A Phenomenological Study Of Clinicians Treating Traumagenic Compulsions Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Albert Sarno Nov 2009

A Phenomenological Study Of Clinicians Treating Traumagenic Compulsions Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Albert Sarno

Faculty Dissertations

Various types of traumatic compulsive behaviors have been observed by practicing mental health clinicians and yet there is a lack of consensus among such clinicians for treating people in such a problematic state when there is also a history of childhood sexual abuse. Ten seasoned clinicians, each with over 15 years experience in treating patients with traumagenic compulsions and childhood sexual abuse were interviewed to explore their lived experience treating people with traumagenic compulsions due to childhood sexual abuse. A phenomenological design was used to asses the data collected in the study. The data were analyzed to determine the best …
