Consolidating Post Conflict Development: Unexploded Ordnance And The Legacy Of The Conflict In Laos, Kearrin Sims Jan 2009

Consolidating Post Conflict Development: Unexploded Ordnance And The Legacy Of The Conflict In Laos, Kearrin Sims

Global CWD Repository

Over thirty-four years since the 1960-1975 Second Indochina War, Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) continues to inhibit a multitude of development priorities in Laos. One of only three remaining Least Developed Countries in Southeast Asia, greater understanding of the socio-economic effects of UXO is crucial to the development of Laos. Drawing on three weeks of field work in June 2009, primarily composed of semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and literature analysis, this thesis examines the effects of UXO alongside an analysis of how existing responses to UXO contamination in Laos may be improved.

Furthermore, it is argued in this thesis that discrepancies over …

Spectrogenetic Translation In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things And Elsewhere, Puspa Damai Jan 2009

Spectrogenetic Translation In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things And Elsewhere, Puspa Damai

English Faculty Research

South Asians, in their attempts to articulate post-colonial subjectivity, have themselves only reinscribed various aspects of colonial exoticism in their work. South Asian author Arundhati Roy’s rendering of untouchability in terms of godliness in The God of Small Things resonates with colonial ideologies that read “subalterns” as objects, not as subjects. Roy’s invocation of colonial methods of translation envisions untouchability in “absolutist terms”—a strategy that may ultimately mitigate against a recognition of the highly varied experiences, social agencies, and subjectivities of dalits living in South Asia and abroad.

Development Of Room Temperature Operating Single Electron Transistor Using Fib Etching And Deposition Technology, Manoranjan Acharya Jan 2009

Development Of Room Temperature Operating Single Electron Transistor Using Fib Etching And Deposition Technology, Manoranjan Acharya

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The single-electron transistor (SET) is one of the best candidates for future nano electronic circuits because of its ultralow power consumption, small size and unique functionality. SET devices operate on the principle of Coulomb blockade, which is more prominent at dimensions of a few nano meters. Typically, the SET device consists of two capacitively coupled ultra-small tunnel junctions with a nano island between them. In order to observe the Coulomb blockade effects in a SET device the charging energy of the device has to be greater that the thermal energy. This condition limits the operation of most of the existing …

International Teachers In The American Classroom : Deposing The Myth Of Monolingualism, Jodi G. Lehman Jan 2009

International Teachers In The American Classroom : Deposing The Myth Of Monolingualism, Jodi G. Lehman

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

An international graduate teaching assistant‘s way of speaking may pose a challenge for college students enrolled in STEM courses at American universities. Students commonly complain that unfamiliar accents interfere with their ability to comprehend the IGTA or that they have difficulty making sense of the IGTA‘s use of words or phrasing. These frustrations are echoed by parents who pay tuition bills. The issue has provoked state and national legislative debates over universities‘ use of IGTAs. However, potentially productive debates and interventions have been stalemated due to the failure to confront deeply embedded myths and cultural models that devalue otherness and …

Analysis And Performance Of A Upc Implementation Of A Parallel Longest Common Subsequence Algorithm, Bryan M. Franklin Jan 2009

Analysis And Performance Of A Upc Implementation Of A Parallel Longest Common Subsequence Algorithm, Bryan M. Franklin

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

An important problem in computational biology is finding the longest common subsequence (LCS) of two nucleotide sequences. This paper examines the correctness and performance of a recently proposed parallel LCS algorithm that uses successor tables and pruning rules to construct a list of sets from which an LCS can be easily reconstructed. Counterexamples are given for two pruning rules that were given with the original algorithm. Because of these errors, performance measurements originally reported cannot be validated. The work presented here shows that speedup can be reliably achieved by an implementation in Unified Parallel C that runs on an Infiniband …

Micro-Fabrication Of Bio-Mems Based Force Sensor To Measure The Force Response Of Living Cells, Varun Gouthaman

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Understanding how a living cell behaves has become a very important topic in today’s research field. Hence, different sensors and testing devices have been designed to test the mechanical properties of these living cells. This thesis presents a method of micro-fabricating a bio-MEMS based force sensor which is used to measure the force response of living cells. Initially, the basic concepts of MEMS have been discussed and the different micro-fabrication techniques used to manufacture various MEMS devices have been described. There have been many MEMS based devices manufactured and employed for testing many nano-materials and bio-materials. Each of the MEMS …

Hall-Effect Thruster-Cathode Coupling : The Effect Of Cathode Position And Magnetic Field Topology, Jason D. Sommerville Jan 2009

Hall-Effect Thruster-Cathode Coupling : The Effect Of Cathode Position And Magnetic Field Topology, Jason D. Sommerville

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Hall-effect thruster (HET) cathodes are responsible for the generation of the free electrons necessary to initiate and sustain the main plasma discharge and to neutralize the ion beam. The position of the cathode relative to the thruster strongly affects the efficiency of thrust generation. However, the mechanisms by which the position affects the efficiency are not well understood. This dissertation explores the effect of cathode position on HET efficiency. Magnetic field topology is shown to play an important role in the coupling between the cathode plasma and the main discharge plasma. The position of the cathode within the magnetic field …

Young Children’S Access And Use Of Computers In Family Child Care And Child Care Centers, Nanci Weinberger, Traci Anderson, Phyllis Schumacher Jan 2009

Young Children’S Access And Use Of Computers In Family Child Care And Child Care Centers, Nanci Weinberger, Traci Anderson, Phyllis Schumacher

Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Forty eight family child care providers and 37 center-based providers completed surveys about the availability and use of computers for children in their care. In addition, the providers were asked about their attitudes towards technology and their own computer skills. The impact of setting type on computer placement and rules about their use did not differ very much by setting type. Several factors were associated with the amount of time children were reported to use the computers. Overall, it appears that child care providers had developmentally sensitive guidelines for fostering computer use in both child care settings.

An Exploratory Study On The Elders' Needs And Attitudes Towards Radio Programmes, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Kam Wing, Kevin Cheung

APIAS Working Paper 工作論文

Not many studies in the literature were to investigate the positive impacts of radio on health of the elderly in Hong Kong. If listening to radio has a positive impact on older people’s health, there would be important implications to the social services in Hong Kong, with regard to further studies on an in-depth understanding of this issue and policy recommendations for the Hong Kong government to improve social services of the elderly population. In light of the above rationale, the present study was designed to explore the qualitative impacts of listening radio on the well-being of elderly people in …

The Expansion Of Class Concepts And The Colorado Coal Field War Project, David M. Amrine Jan 2009

The Expansion Of Class Concepts And The Colorado Coal Field War Project, David M. Amrine

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Colorado Coal Field War Project was an attempt by McGuire, Reckner, and others to develop a 'working-class' archaeology that served the public as well as the archaeologists performing excavations and research. The attempt was successful, promoting and supporting ideas that had been discussed in archaeology about gender, class, and the treatment of archaeology as a craft. Their example of using archaeology to benefit communities as well as academic interests can and should be tested in other regions of the United States as well as the rest of the world.

Enhancing Employment Opportunities For Mature Workers Through Training: Case Studies Of Employment Services In Massachusetts, Francis G. Caro, Andrea T. Tull Jan 2009

Enhancing Employment Opportunities For Mature Workers Through Training: Case Studies Of Employment Services In Massachusetts, Francis G. Caro, Andrea T. Tull

Gerontology Institute Publications

Extension of working years among those approaching “normal” retirement ages is receiving increased attention. Much of the impetus is financial. The weakening of private pension systems is leaving increasing numbers of those approaching retirement with inadequate savings. Rising health care costs and the erosion of retiree health benefits also encourages older workers to remain in the workforce. The current recession has greatly escalated the financial concerns of those who are late in their working lives. With the deterioration of financial markets, the values of 401K portfolios have declined enormously. Further, the decline in home prices has left many with substantial …

The Beacon Of Hope/University Of New Orleans Community Recovery Project: 2009, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

An LDRF grant was awarded to develop a pilot surveying and mapping program in Gentilly. Without this generous grant, the current surveying and mapping project that is continuing to spread throughout Gentilly would not have been possible. This grant has allowed the Beacon of Hope to partner with The University of New Orleans to create the Beacon of Hope/University of New Orleans Community Recovery Project (BUCRP) to create a more systematic approach to creating an overall surveying and mapping process that could be applied more broadly across the City of New Orleans.

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett Jan 2009

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper, I discuss the intersection of linguistic and racial hierarchies for English language learners in their school community. I argue that the mapping of one social hierarchy onto another is used to create Self-Other distinctions based on linguistic background. I examine how these hierarchies framed the social context in ways that marginalized this diverse group of learners. I draw on research data from six, white, middle-class English language teachers to analyze how their students experienced this intersection. I conclude with suggestions for teacher educators to include material and curricula that examines not only structural hierarchies of language and …

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize Jan 2009

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Although racial groupings are not biologically determined, socially constructed racial categorizations greatly influence an individual’s material conditions and lived experiences. Social, economic, political, and educational realms are stratified as a result of racism, or the racist structures embedded in institutions and policies that allow whites to control the majority of resources. The extent to which the dominant group is collectively privileged in the United States’ society is difficult for whites to fully comprehend due to their social position. Teacher candidates need to understand the ways in which economic and social manifestations of racism affect educational institutions, which in turn perpetuates …

The Paired Placements Project: A Summary Report Of A Field Experiences Initiative, Craig Loewen, Thelma M. Gunn, Mary Dyck, Shari Platt Jan 2009

The Paired Placements Project: A Summary Report Of A Field Experiences Initiative, Craig Loewen, Thelma M. Gunn, Mary Dyck, Shari Platt

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This project investigates the effectiveness of paired placements in a first professional semester within a teacher preparation program. Student teachers were assigned either individually to a classroom or were assigned in pairs to a single classroom for a five-week practicum. The student teachers, their teacher associates, and their university consultants all served as participants in this study. Results indicated that student teachers in paired placements reported decreased opportunities for teaching and observation, but increased opportunity for collaboration. Teacher associates corroborated these results but also indicated some difficulty in providing fair assessment to their student teachers. Therefore, this project demonstrated some …

Secondary National Board Candidates And Attitudes Toward Assessment: A Qualitative Study, Vincent Aleccia Jan 2009

Secondary National Board Candidates And Attitudes Toward Assessment: A Qualitative Study, Vincent Aleccia

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated the impact that National Board certification had on the assessment practice of secondary candidates in Eastern Washington. The study was framed by three research questions: (a) To what extent do National Board candidates think about the place of assessment in their classroom practice before they begin the process? (b) Does the National Board certification process impact their beliefs about assessment so that they see assessment in a different light by the time they complete the process? (c) Do teachers who have undergone the National Board certification process change the type of assessments used in their classroom practice …

Truthful Dialogue, Nancy Meltzoff, Carla Gary Jan 2009

Truthful Dialogue, Nancy Meltzoff, Carla Gary

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

We explore truthful dialogue as a means of developing cultural competence, in particular the skill of managing the dynamics of difference. We discuss specific incidents in a year-long conflict which occurred in a teacher-education cohort between an African-American Christian woman and a White Jewish lesbian. In truthful dialogue, the participants are encouraged to examine themselves--their feelings and their experiences—and to speak together in the pursuit of mutual understanding. The facilitator(s) assist them in communicating in a way that feels safe for all involved, so that they use the experience as a way to increase their personal cultural competence. Finally, if …
