Evidence Of Infaunal Effects On Porewater Advection And Biogeochemistry In Permeable Sediments: A Proposed Infaunal Functional Group Framework, George G. Waldbusser, Roberta L. Marinelli Jan 2009

Evidence Of Infaunal Effects On Porewater Advection And Biogeochemistry In Permeable Sediments: A Proposed Infaunal Functional Group Framework, George G. Waldbusser, Roberta L. Marinelli

Journal of Marine Research

Bioturbating infauna significantly modify reaction and transport processes in permeable sediments, though most studies to date are limited in the scope of species examined. We conducted a comparative field study measuring density-dependent effects of six common bioturbating species on porewater advection and biogeochemistry, across three intertidal permeable sediment habitats. The species in this study are; head-down like deposit feeders (Abarenicola pacifica and Balanoglossus aurantiacus), surface deposit feeders (Diopatra cuprea and Onuphis jenneri) and gallery diffusers (Upogebia pugettensis and Neotrypaea californiensis). Tracer loss from gel diffusers was used to assess relative differences in porewater advection …

A Reconnaissance Of The Intersex Condition In Micropterus Dolomieu Of The Upper Ohio River Basin As An Indicator Of Anthropogenic Endocrine Disruptors, Christopher Barry Jan 2009

A Reconnaissance Of The Intersex Condition In Micropterus Dolomieu Of The Upper Ohio River Basin As An Indicator Of Anthropogenic Endocrine Disruptors, Christopher Barry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The intersex condition has been used as a marker of endocrine disruption in West Virginia. Fifty-two male smallmouth bass from 6 basins on the upper Ohio River were examined for the presence and severity of intersex. Vitellogenin (VTG) RNA levels were quantified as marker of estrogenic contaminants. A significant increase in intersex (p=0.02), ranging from 83.3% to 100%, corresponds with higher population densities and agricultural land (p=0.003). At reference sites, smallmouth bass had intersex frequencies of 16.7% to 33.3%. Vitellogenin results were significantly lower (p< 0.001) at impacted sites, consistent with previously reported results in female fish. VTG levels in males were not significantly different. Increased intersex occurrence in males and lowered VTG expression in females have shown that agricultural chemicals and common residential wastewater constituents are likely targets for exploring the relationship between individual EDCs and intersex. There may be a natural background level of the intersex condition.

Use Of Urokinase In The Treatment Of Tuberculous Meningitis Hydrocephalus, Mutasem M. Abuhamed, Song Zhi, Xiao Bo Jan 2009

Use Of Urokinase In The Treatment Of Tuberculous Meningitis Hydrocephalus, Mutasem M. Abuhamed, Song Zhi, Xiao Bo

Neurosciences

We present a patient with hydrocephalus after tuberculous meningitis successfully treated with urokinase. She presented with multiple episodes of headache, fever, and vomiting. She underwent external ventricular drainage and was treated with urokinase in addition to dexamethasone, acetazolamide, and 4 antituberculous drugs. She was evaluated clinically, radiologically, and by laboratory work-up. On short-term clinical follow-up (3 months), she was asymptomatic after the treatment with urokinase. She was radiologically evaluated 3 weeks after the treatment. An MRI of the brain showed a decrease in ventricular size. Urokinase can be considered as a safe and promising adjunctive treatment for tuberculous meningitis hydrocephalus.

Method Against Method: Swarm And Interdisciplinary Research Methodology, Dylan E. Wittkower Jan 2009

Method Against Method: Swarm And Interdisciplinary Research Methodology, Dylan E. Wittkower

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Part of a special issue on “swarm methodology,” this paper, written by a swarm participant, reflects upon the purpose and value of this kind of interdisciplinary research methodology. First, by way of a recognition of the interdisciplinary status of this paper itself, the question of what we hope to accomplish when we engage in conversations across disciplinary boundaries is broached. Second, a discussion of the practice of peer-review provides an approximate view of one paradigmatic understanding of how we produce a “conversation” within a given established research methodology. We are then, third, able to consider a number of possible related …

A Lab To Stemulate Undergraduate Students Into Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics Majors, Nicole Lynn Speelman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The central focus is the development and implementation of a research/lab module for first year chemistry courses. Electrochemical techniques are utilized to study oxidation and reduction reactions of neurotransmitters with a poly(2,2'-Bithiophene) modified electrode. The goal is to excite students about chemistry and encourage them to continue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) during their undergraduate education. The lab module was created for Project REEL (Research Experiences to Enhance Learning) and will be illustrated with results typically obtained by students. The experiment is inquiry-based, which includes challenging questions students have to do collaboration and research to answer, as …

Anthropogenic Osmium In Rain And Snow Reveals Global-Scale Atmospheric Contamination, Cynthia Chen, Peter N. Sedwick, Mukul Sharma Jan 2009

Anthropogenic Osmium In Rain And Snow Reveals Global-Scale Atmospheric Contamination, Cynthia Chen, Peter N. Sedwick, Mukul Sharma

OES Faculty Publications

Osmium is one of the rarer elements in seawater, with typical concentration of ≈10 x 10-15 g g-1 ( 5.3 x 10-14 mol kg-1. The osmium isotope composition (187Os/188Os ratio) of deep oceans is 1.05, reflecting a balance between inputs from continental crust (≈ 1.3) and mantle/cosmic dust (≈ 0.13). Here, we show that the 187Os/188Os ratios measured in rain and snow collected around the world range from 0.16 to 0.48, much lower than expected (>1), but similar to the isotope composition of ores (approximate to 0.2) …

Membrane Properties Of Intact Rock Cores Of Burlington Limestone, Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, And Low Permeability Concrete, Megan Hart Jan 2009

Membrane Properties Of Intact Rock Cores Of Burlington Limestone, Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, And Low Permeability Concrete, Megan Hart

Doctoral Dissertations

"A number of laboratory studies have shown that clays exhibit membrane properties. However, little research has been performed on lithologies outside of pure clays. Recently, research focusing on mixed sand and clay membrane properties for engineering applications was performed. Still, literature only suggests the possibilities of membrane properties, osmotic or reverse-osmotic, associated with other naturally occurring 'tight' rock types. Therefore, the objectives of this research was to perform a series of hyperfiltration experiments using actual rock discs of Quarry Ridge Jefferson Dolomite, Darrington Phyllite, Lower Burlington Limestone, and low permeability concrete to determine if tight lithologies can function as membranes"--Abstract, …

The Effect Of Learning Styles And Attitude On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Conceptual Understanding Of Chemistry And The Nature Of Matter In A Simulation-Based Learning Environment, Mo H. Al-Jaroudi Jan 2009

The Effect Of Learning Styles And Attitude On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Conceptual Understanding Of Chemistry And The Nature Of Matter In A Simulation-Based Learning Environment, Mo H. Al-Jaroudi

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This causal-comparative descriptive study investigated the achievement of pre-service elementary teachers taking an introductory physical science course that integrates inquiry-based instruction with computer simulations. The study was intended to explore if pre-service elementary teachers with different attitudes towards science as well as students with different learning styles would benefit differentially. Four research questions including four hypotheses were developed. The first major question consist of four specific hypothesis that addressed preservice elementary teachers' learning styles (Active/Reflective, Sensing/Intuitive, Visual/Verbal, and Sequential/Global) and their conceptual understanding of chemistry and the particulate nature of matter in a science class which use hands-on learning integrated …
