Revelation 17:1-14, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2009

Revelation 17:1-14, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

MUCH OF REVELATION IS "LITERALLY SYMBOLIC." The question is what the symbolism means— and meant, from literary, political, and religious standpoints. Meaningful interpretation of Rev 17 today hinges upon grasping a sense of what it meant for its original audiences in late first-century Asia Minor. As these apocalyptic messages were read among the churches, how did their original audiences understand the imagery of the woman who rides on the beast, the beast with seven heads and ten horns, and the seven kings and then the eighth? How might they have understood themselves called to receive the text's message then, and …

Point Our Souls To Christ: Lessons From Leviticus, Julie M. Smith Jan 2009

Point Our Souls To Christ: Lessons From Leviticus, Julie M. Smith

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

In recent years, the study of Leviticus has been galvanized by anthropologist Mary Douglas. Douglas's central insight was that Leviticus relies on analogical thinking, which means that each part of the law cannot be understood on its own but only by comparing it with other parts of the law of Moses. This paper uses an analogical approach to Leviticus in order to explore what the law of Moses teaches about Jesus Christ. Details of the various offerings; laws regarding food, contact, and illness; and holy days are examined analogically in order to show what ancient prophets in the New and …

Electronic Bible versions in Logos Bible Software are available for purchase individually (see link below), or come bundled with various packages. The advantage of having a Logos electronic version is to be able to access Scripture texts from the class readings via the "linking" capability within Logos Bible Software. The RSV in Logos is least expensive ($9.95) and is used in Asbury's IBS classes; but in Logos it contains no marginal notes; the NASB95 ($24.95) has linking to marginal notes. 2. David …

Book Review: Mary Healy And Robin Parry (Eds), The Bible And Epistemology: Biblical Soundings Of The Knowledge Of God, Milton Keynes, Paternoster, 2007, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

One of the major tasks of theology is to find a rational way to speak about the mystery of God. This can be a challenging task, especially as many chasms exist between academic theology and other disciplines like psychiatry or other areas like the local parish. Yet, to admit the possibility of a ‘catastrophic chasm’ between theology and biblical studies implies a grave division at the heart of Christian reflection. The aim of book is to try to fill this tragic lacuna by way of sounding out the Bible's epistemology. The concern is to show that the Bible is instrumental …

The primary text in this course is the Holy Bible. There are three basic theories behind the work of Bible translation: (1) Literal or formally equivalent; (2) Idiomatic or dynamically equivalent; and (3) Free or paraphrase. Some of the more literal versions of the Bible include the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the Revised Standard Version (RSV) or the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). Although both the King James Version (KJV) and the New King James Version (NKJV) fall into the category of literal translations, they are textually inferior to modern translations of the Bible. Programa De Formación Espiritual Para La Preparación De Líderes En Universidades Adventistas, Walter Alana

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Theological Seminary of the Adventist Technological Institute of Ecuador (ITSAE) provides a practical theoretical education to its students. Its fundamental purpose is to produce spiritual leaders that might appropriately cope with the different ecclesiastical challenges they may find in the field, once their career is completed. To accomplish this goal, students visit the local churches on weekly bases to integrate theory and praxis and to develop their leadership skills in a progressive way. Preliminary observations suggest that in spite of students accomplishing the assigned hours of their pre-professional practicum in different local churches, they have difficulty understanding how …

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay Jan 2009

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of justification tells how the saving grace of God in Christ can be actualized in the believers. Because of the very importance of this doctrine, disputes broke out between Augustine and Pelagius, later in the medieval period, and most importantly during the Reformation period - which led to mutual condemnations and the division of the Western church. The church still does not have a unified voice in interpreting the doctrine despite recent ecumenical dialogues, which culminated in the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in 1999.

Principles For Developing Inculturated Theology In The Diverse African Context: Steps Beyond Traditional Heritages, Jane Catherine Hagaba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation critically examines the foundational significance of Christ for contextual theologies in the African Catholic Church. It begins with a presentation of Benezet Bujo's approach and contextual methodology. As a critical study, this dissertation is premised on the principle that the object of Christianity is the transformation of peoples and their societies. Therefore, the study examines the ways in which African societies founded on an immutable principle of blood kinship can open to the Christian faith and to the globalizing world today. The dissertation grapples with this issue to unravel the weaknesses and limitations of African theologies of inculturation. …

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project to promote the development of an incarnational ministry at the Webb Chapel Church of Christ. This intervention employed a team of Webb Chapel opinion leaders representative of various subgroups of the congregation. In the fall of 2008, this group met for eight sessions to discuss the self-emptying practices of Jesus and the need for his followers to emulate those self-emptying practices in their individual lives. Through interaction in the eight sessions, the group developed a model by which self-emptying practices could be implemented at Webb Chapel. Evaluation of the …
