“People Like Us” In Pursuit Of God And Rights: Islamic Feminist Discourse And Sisters In Islam In Malaysia, Yasmin Moll
“People Like Us” In Pursuit Of God And Rights: Islamic Feminist Discourse And Sisters In Islam In Malaysia, Yasmin Moll
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper attempts to critically situate the discourse of Islamic feminism and its activist incarnations such as the Malaysian group Sisters in Islam within an analytical framework that seeks to look beyond the all-too-common trope of “multiple modernities.” The paper examines the conditions of possibility enabling such groups and discourses, looking in particular at the modern nation-state, and the imbrications of social discourses of rights and religious discourses of individual belief within this state. I argue that the repertoires of reasoning called forth by Sisters in Islam partake in the objectifying rationalities of the Malaysian state when it comes to …
That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes
That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes
Doctor of Ministry
American Christians, as a whole, lack a spiritual maturity that infuses the whole of their lives with Christlikeness. Additionally, Americans suffer from an epidemic of loneliness. These two problems are related. We will demonstrate that American Christians lack spiritual maturity, in part, because they have privatized their faith and made spiritual formation an individual endeavor. Furthermore, we will show that spiritual formation is best located and grounded within a community context. Humans are social creatures. It is becoming ever more widely recognized that social isolation and loneliness are root causes of much psychosocial dysfunction. Humans do not function well if …

Visible Under The Veil: Dissimulation, Performance And Agency In An Islamic Public Space, Julie Billaud
Visible Under The Veil: Dissimulation, Performance And Agency In An Islamic Public Space, Julie Billaud
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper seeks to characterize new meanings attached to women’s veiling in an Islamic public space, drawing from observations, interviews and field notes collected among various women’s groups in Afghanistan. It is argued that while the chadari – or burqa, as the Western press miscalled it, using the Urdu denomination – has become the ultimate symbol of women’s oppression for Western audiences, it is necessary to take a closer look at its multiple and often contradictory uses and to contextualise the reasons for its maintenance, despite the downfall of the Taliban regime. Ethnographic research demonstrates that women who are attempting …

Library Scholarly Publications
Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners. The project integrates easy-to-use technical tools with instructional design principles and resources for digital teaching and learning. The result is a replicable web environment where faculty …

Genome 10k: A Proposal To Obtain Whole-Genome Sequence For 10 000 Vertebrate Species, Tony Gamble, Genome 10k Community Of Scientists
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The human genome project has been recently complemented by whole-genome assessment sequence of 32 mammals and 24 nonmammalian vertebrate species suitable for comparative genomic analyses. Here we anticipate a precipitous drop in costs and increase in sequencing efficiency, with concomitant development of improved annotation technology and, therefore, propose to create a collection of tissue and DNA specimens for 10 000 vertebrate species specifically designated for whole-genome sequencing in the very near future. For this purpose, we, the Genome 10K Community of Scientists (G10KCOS), will assemble and allocate a biospecimen collection of some 16 203 representative vertebrate species spanning …
The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields
The Art Of Aidagara: Ethics, Aesthetics, And The Quest For An Ontology Of Social Existence In Watsuji Tetsurō’S Rinrigaku, James Mark Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper provides an analysis of the key term aidagara (“betweenness”) in the philosophical ethics of Watsuji Tetsurō (1889-1960), in response to and in light of the recent movement in Japanese Buddhist studies known as “Critical Buddhism.” The Critical Buddhist call for a turn away from “topical” or intuitionist thinking and towards (properly Buddhist) “critical” thinking, while problematic in its bipolarity, raises the important issue of the place of “reason” versus “intuition” in Japanese Buddhist ethics. In this paper, a comparison of Watsuji’s “ontological quest” with that of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Watsuji’s primary Western source and foil, is followed by …
A Comparison Of Gambling Motivation Factors Between Chinese And Western Casino Players, Lu Ye
A Comparison Of Gambling Motivation Factors Between Chinese And Western Casino Players, Lu Ye
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper explored literature on gambling motivation of Western and Chinese casino players to find out the similarities and differences of their motivation factors. Study found that they are motivated in similar ways by the desire to win, social and early memories. However, the Chinese gamblers exhibit severer cognitive errors, stronger risk-taking tendency and higher level of stress and depression, which explained the common findings of literature that Chinese have higher gambling and problem gambling rates than other ethnic groups. The findings would benefit casino operators in making marketing strategy at the Chinese players as well as problem gambling treatment …
Relationships Between Electronic Communications And Interpersonal Relationships, Cindy Klimaszewski
Relationships Between Electronic Communications And Interpersonal Relationships, Cindy Klimaszewski
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
With technology use on the rise, interpersonal communication is changing. The following study was intended to assess the relationship between the amount of time people spend engaging in electronic communications versus the amount of time they spend in face-to-face interaction. It was hypothesized that the two are inversely related. However, results showed that there is no relationship, but there were several other interesting observations made that were supported by previous research. Future studies should be conducted on a larger scale for a more accurate assessment.
The Sacred And The Secular: Blending Borders To Maximize Product Success, Karen R. Deross
The Sacred And The Secular: Blending Borders To Maximize Product Success, Karen R. Deross
Journalism
In a society where a person can choose anything he wants from a vast literary buffet, the products that appeal to varied audiences with differing values and interests stand out among the masses. The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren is a prominent example of a product that became explosively successful in two starkly differing markets: the secular and the religious.
This research paper explores the history and controversy surrounding the combination of these two markets and the implications they have for each. The triumph of The Purpose Driven Life, as well as other prominent Christian titles, is focused on …

Stealing Women, Stealing Men: Co-Creating Cultures Of Polygamy In A Pesantren Community In Eastern Indonesia, Bianca J. Smith
Stealing Women, Stealing Men: Co-Creating Cultures Of Polygamy In A Pesantren Community In Eastern Indonesia, Bianca J. Smith
Journal of International Women's Studies
The article examines how particular elements of Sasak society structurally facilitate a culture of polygamy in a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) which is managed by male Muslim teachers and preachers (Tuan Guru) who maintain a paradoxical position in society that implicates women in the co-creation of polygamy. By culturally situating Muslim women’s experiences in wider Indonesian and local Sasak discursive contexts, and based on anthropological field research techniques, the article elucidates how Muslim women draw on a range of magical forces and prayers that they learn from their Muslim teachers in the pesantren in response to customary marriage …
Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne
Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this paper I argue that the internally displaced Muslim women’s experience of displacement and their perception of new developments since the last round of peace initiative between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE are significantly different from their male counterparts in that the women find these experiences as empowering in some respects. The paper also evidence that this empowerment is differently experienced by women belonging to different social classes. Women have been identified as a problem body within the Muslim community and restrictions on Muslim women have been justified through discourses on family honor and frivolous women. The …
True West, Chris Toalson
True West, Chris Toalson
Theses
This thesis, True West, utilizes photography to investigate the myth of the American West. I reflect on the ways that myth has been used to symbolically situate the West at the heart of our American identity, in order to discern our seeming fascination with this imagined West. Looking to photography's historical precedence as a purveyor of myth, my photographs explore notions of representation and re-presentation to question both photographic truth and western authenticity. I focus on the intertwining of history and myth, where more often than not, myth prevails. True West urges a refocus toward a more factual history, where …

Uprooting Identities: The Regulation Of Olive Trees In The Occupied West Bank, Irus Braverman
Uprooting Identities: The Regulation Of Olive Trees In The Occupied West Bank, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
The Israeli/Palestinian conflict has rarely been associated with trees in the common perception. This article reveals the complex historical and cultural processes that have led to strong identification between the olive tree and the Palestinian people, arguing that this identification is not only a reflection of the olive’s unique economic and cultural status in this region but also an act of resistance to Israel’s occupation. The article also explains how Israel’s tightening of surveillance, practiced in the name of olive protection, actually ends up forcing an alien set of spatial and temporal regimes on the everyday life of Palestinians in …

Talent: Implications For A U.S. Army Officer Corps Strategy, Casey Wardynski Colonel, David S. Lyle Colonel, Michael J. Colarusso Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In our proposed Army Officer Corps Strategy, we established the interdependency of accessing, developing, retaining and employing talented leaders. Before exploring each of those functions in greater detail, however, we must first define “talent.” In our view, talent is something possessed by everyone. In fact, each individual has a unique distribution of talent across three dimensions—skills, knowledge, and behaviors. Effective organizations understand this. They successfully access and retain a depth and breadth of talent that can be developed and employed against current and future requirements.
Chronicling The Complexification Of Negotiation Theory And Practice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Chronicling The Complexification Of Negotiation Theory And Practice, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The essay reviews the content of twenty-five years of the Harvard Program on Negotiation's Negotiation Journal, identifying themes and issues explored on its pages in the past, the current issues challenging the field’s scholars and practitioners, and the issues likely to confront us in the future. It argues that while we in the field hoped for simple, elegant, and universal theories of negotiation and conflict resolution, the last twenty-five years have demonstrated the increasing complexification of negotiation theory and practice, from increased numbers of parties and issues, and dilemmas of intertemporal commitments, ethics, accountability, and relationships of private action to …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research
A number of living primates feed partyear on seemingly hard food objects as a fallback. We ask here how hardness can be quantified and how this can help understand primate feeding ecology. We report a simple indentation methodology for quantifying hardness, elastic modulus, and toughness in the sense that materials scientists would define them. Suggested categories of fallback foods—nuts, seeds, and root vegetables— were tested, with accuracy checked on standard materials with known properties by the same means. Results were generally consistent, but the moduli of root vegetables were overestimated here. All these properties are important components of what fieldworkers …
Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam
Engendering The Nation: Women, Islam, And Poetry In Pakistan, Anita Anantharam
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this essay I offer some examples of reading feminist agency in Pakistan through an analysis of the poems of two of Pakistan’s preeminent feminist poets, Fahmida Riaz (b.1946) and Kishwar Naheed (b.1940). Rather than gesture to their poetry in a strategy of recuperation I contend that their powerful narratives compel us to reevaluate the parameters of contemporary feminist historiography and discourses of nationalism in South Asia. The poems of Fahmida Riaz and Kishwar Naheed are informed by a different set of paradigms about self and community (Islam) and at the same time reflect an archive (poetry) as crucial to …
Muslim Women Leaders In The Ferghana Valley: Whose Leadership Is It Anyway?, Svetlana Peshkova
Muslim Women Leaders In The Ferghana Valley: Whose Leadership Is It Anyway?, Svetlana Peshkova
Journal of International Women's Studies
There are many geographic and historical examples of Muslim women leaders, yet questions about women’s ability to lead and the kinds of leadership women can assume are still a part of scholarly and public debates among Muslims. In this article, based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in the Ferghana Valley (Uzbekistan), I provide examples of Muslim women’s leadership and argue that in order to fully understand women’s leadership we need to question the assumption that men and women desire the same forms of leadership. A desire for leadership is not intrinsic to women (or humans in general) but is …
Claiming Their Space: Muslim Women-Led Networks And The Women’S Movement In India, Nida Kirmani
Claiming Their Space: Muslim Women-Led Networks And The Women’S Movement In India, Nida Kirmani
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Shah Bano case of the 1980s was a landmark in the discourse on ‘Muslim women’s rights’ in India. At this time, however, few Muslim women actually participated in the debates, which were dominated by male religious leaders and politicians or by ‘secular’ women’s groups, which had scant Muslim representation. Since the 1980s several Muslim-women led organisations have emerged in urban areas across the country, some of which have formed networks to advocate for Muslim women’s rights. This article looks at the emergence of two networks in particular, the Muslim Women’s Rights Network (MWRN) and the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan …
Polygamy Talk And The Politics Of Feminism: Contestations Over Masculinity In A New Muslim Indonesia, Sonja Van Wichelen
Polygamy Talk And The Politics Of Feminism: Contestations Over Masculinity In A New Muslim Indonesia, Sonja Van Wichelen
Journal of International Women's Studies
The political downfall of the Suharto administration in 1998 marked the end of the “New Order,” which was characterized by a 32-year period of authoritarian rule. Opening the way for democracy, it included the unlocking of Indonesian politics for the influence and participation of political Islam, which the New Order discouraged or banned. This shift led to a proliferation of Islamic issues in the public and political sphere. Many of them concerned issues of gender and have triggered profound debates about women’s rights and gender equality. This article examines one of these public concerns over “Islam and gender,” namely polygamy. …
‘Breaking The Silence’: The Religious Muslim Women’S Movement In Turkey, Hilal Ozcetin
‘Breaking The Silence’: The Religious Muslim Women’S Movement In Turkey, Hilal Ozcetin
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article explores the emergence of the religious Muslim women’s movement in the 1990s in Turkey, and its relation with the broader women’s movement, including the exclusion of religious Muslim women from the women’s movement. My analysis is based on interviews I conducted in April and May 2006 with religious Muslim women who work in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and participate in joint projects with other women’s NGOs in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey. I argue that because of a modernist perspective which views both the headscarf and religious Muslim women as ‘backward,’ as opposed to the ‘ideal female citizen’ as secular …
