Hydrologic Interdependencies And Human Cooperation: The Process Of Adapting To Droughts, Joanna Endter-Wada, Theresa Selfa, Lisa Welsh
Hydrologic Interdependencies And Human Cooperation: The Process Of Adapting To Droughts, Joanna Endter-Wada, Theresa Selfa, Lisa Welsh
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
The Bear River Basin, which includes portions of Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming in the United States, has a dynamic history of human hydrologic adaptations in relation to a highly variable water supply. These adaptations are embedded in a geographical setting highly influenced by the legal, policy, and institutional contexts that govern allocation of water in this generally arid region. In response to several years of drought and a historically low water year in 2004, water users in the Bear River Basin tested the efficacy of the “law of the river” and innovative agreements that they had negotiated in recent years …

In Mid -Stream: A Qualitative Case Study Of A Young Deaf Woman - Becoming 'Leigh', Ann Darby Getty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this longitudinal case study was to closely examine one deaf child's lived experience. The research was designed to examine linguistic development, academic experience, and personal and social conditions through the use of multiple interviews with a 'hearing' mother and her deaf daughter. Their perspectives have been shared as well as that of the narrator/inquirer.;The study begins when 'Leigh' was identified as having a profound, bilateral hearing loss at the age of 12 months, and continues to date with her current status as a twenty year old, college sophomore. The raw texts analyzed include: interview excerpts, results of …
An Exploration Of The Reasons Violent Crimes Are Not Reported To The Police, Sheena A. Marosy
An Exploration Of The Reasons Violent Crimes Are Not Reported To The Police, Sheena A. Marosy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper explores the differences why violent crime victimizations are not being reported to the police. Using 2006 National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, I develop and test cross-tabulation models which explain the influence age, sex, and victim/offender relationship has on the reporting of violent victimizations to the police. Previous research shows that victimizations involving males and juveniles are less likely to come to the attention of the police Results of my analysis support this research and show that older victims ages 26 and older are significantly more likely to report violent …
An Analysis Of U.S. History Textbooks: The Treatment Of Primary Sources, Misty D. Rodeheaver
An Analysis Of U.S. History Textbooks: The Treatment Of Primary Sources, Misty D. Rodeheaver
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the treatment of primary sources in three of the most widely adopted secondary U.S. History textbooks. Specifically examined were the types of primary sources, location of corresponding questions, classification of corresponding questions according by the Depth of Knowledge and the Library of Congress steps in examining primary sources, and presence of answers in the narrative. An instrument was created to assure transparency in assessing the textbooks. The results were examined through the interpretative frame works of historians and the various perspectives within the social studies. All texts incorporated many primary sources but varied greatly in their presentations …

Holocene Landform Evolution And Natural Site Formation Processes At The West Blennerhassett Archaeological Site (46wd83-A), Wood County, West Virginia, Ryan W. Robinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study utilizes sedimentary, pedological, and archaeological data recovered from the West Blennerhassett site (46WD83-A), a deeply stratified archaeological site located at Blennerhassett Island, an Ohio River island in Wood County, West Virginia, to determine a site-specific history of landform evolution and natural site formation processes. Archaeological investigations were conducted at West Blennerhassett by the Cultural Resources Section of Michael Baker Jr., Inc. in 2002 and 2003 as part of the environmental studies for the U.S. Route 50 Blennerhassett Bridge Project for the West Virginia Division of Highways and the Federal Highways Administration. These investigations revealed stratified archaeological deposits extending …
The Changing Illinois Indians Under European Influence: The Split Between The Kaskaskia And Peoria, Gerald A. Rogers
The Changing Illinois Indians Under European Influence: The Split Between The Kaskaskia And Peoria, Gerald A. Rogers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Illinois Indians are generally studied as a prominent group in the Illinois Country that continually became more dependent after increased European Influence. This study looked at the split within the Illinois Indians, particularly between the Kaskaskia and Peoria. The fracturing of the Illinois Indians was a prominent point in the decline of the group. Under European influence, many Kaskaskia became Christians and moved their village closer to the French. Alternatively, the Peoria challenged the Christian religion and remained in the Lake Peoria region. By using primary and secondary literature on the topic, the split between the Kaskaskia and Peoria …

Migration And Gender: The Case Of A Farming Ejido In Calakmul, Mexico, Claudia Radel, Birgit Schmook
Migration And Gender: The Case Of A Farming Ejido In Calakmul, Mexico, Claudia Radel, Birgit Schmook
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
As one of Mexico’s last agricultural frontiers, southern Mexico’s rural farming municipality of Calakmul has long been marked by rural in-migration. In the last few years this process has given place to an explosive growth of primarily male labor out-migration, particularly to the United States. The authors trace the outlines of the migration process from the perspective of one rural Calakmul community, to explore effects of men’s transnational migration on the household and community status of the women remaining behind. Analysis is based on quantitative data collected in 2004 from 25 households, and on in-depth qualitative interviews in 2005 with …

Conceptualizing Aggression, Noah Weisbord
Conceptualizing Aggression, Noah Weisbord
Faculty Publications
The special working group tasked by the International Criminal Court’s Assembly of States Parties to define the supreme international crime, the crime of aggression, has produced a breakthrough draft definition.
This paper analyzes the key concepts that make up the emerging definition of the crime of aggression by developing and applying a future-oriented methodology that brings together scenario planning and grounded theory. It proposes modifications and interpretations of the constituent concepts of the crime of aggression intended to make the definition sociologically relevant today and in the foreseeable future.

Representaciones E Imaginarios Sobre La Pobreza: Villa Miseria Y Subjetividad En La Literatura Argentina Del Siglo Xx Y Xxi, Maria Forcadell
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation studies the representation of shantytowns in Argentine narrative of the 20th and 21st century. The intellectual assumes the role of mediator and strengthens and or defies the social imagery about the poor and the space s/he inhabits. I argue that the socio-economic crisis of December 2001 affects the way in which writers imagine the subaltern and his/her urban spaces. As the narratives of progress and modernity enter in crisis, the villa miseria and poverty are reconfigured in new tales. This project is concentrated mainly in the post crisis fiction and on the emergency of social actors such piqueteros, …

In The Voices Of Men, Beasts, And Gods: Unmasking The Abject Persona In Postwar And Contemporary Japanese Women's Poetry, Lee Friederich
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation examines the dramatic use of personae of abjection in the works of contemporary and postwar Japanese women poets Ishigaki Rin: 1920-2004), Tomioka Taeko: b. 1935), Yoshihara Sachiko: 1932-2002), It├┤ Hiromi: b. 1955), and Isaka Yok├┤: b. 1949). Recognizing the strong sense of abjection that permeates postwar and contemporary Japanese poetry in general, I explore the ways in which women poets embody the abject--the fantastically grotesque, the deviant and the mortally wounded--in their poetry. Turning away from the dictates of twentieth century critics that women poets write in a transparently autobiographical mode: primarily about their experiences as wives and …
Toward A More Wholly Communion: Cultivating Ecological Enlightenment And Sustainable Action In Christians, Cary Hauptman Gaunt
Toward A More Wholly Communion: Cultivating Ecological Enlightenment And Sustainable Action In Christians, Cary Hauptman Gaunt
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Increasingly, environmental, scientific, and religious organizations and leaders are calling for people of faith to wake up to the global climate and other environmental crises and step up their ecological responsibility by leading more sustainable lives. Yet only a few seem to hear the calls and even fewer are responding in substantive ways. Many have commented on the gap between the religious theory for environmental care and the actual practice of living ecologically sustainable lives. Exploring how to bridge this gap is increasingly important as environmental regulatory, policy, and technology efforts fall short of goals and environmental professionals, including regulators, …

The Evidential Weight Of Considered Moral Judgments, Christopher Michael Cloos
The Evidential Weight Of Considered Moral Judgments, Christopher Michael Cloos
Master's Theses
The input objection to reflective equilibrium (RE) claims that the method fails as a method of moral justification. According to the objection, considered moral judgments (CMJs) are not truth-conducive. Because the method uses inputs that are not credible, the method does not generate justified moral beliefs. The objection is solved by reinterpreting RE using contemporary developments in ethical intuitionism. The first half of the thesis sets up the input objection, explores potential responses to the objection, and uncovers the best way to solve the objection. The second half of the thesis solves the input objection by defining key terms, detailing …

Recordkeeping Alters Economic History By Promoting Reciprocity, Sudipta Basu, John Dickhaut, Gary Hecht, Kristy Towry, Gregory Waymire
ESI Publications
We experimentally demonstrate a causal link between recordkeeping and reciprocal exchange. Recordkeeping improves memory of past interactions in a complex exchange environment, which promotes reputation formation and decision coordination. Economies with recordkeeping exhibit a beneficially altered economic history where the risks of exchanging with strangers are substantially lessened. Our findings are consistent with prior assertions that complex and extensive reciprocity requires sophisticated memory to store information on past transactions. We offer insights on this research by scientifically demonstrating that reciprocity can be facilitated by information storage external to the brain. This is consistent with the archaeological record, which suggests that …
