Copyright For A Social Species, Robert E. Suggs Dec 2009

Copyright For A Social Species, Robert E. Suggs

Faculty Scholarship

Arguments about the proper scope of copyright protection focus on the economic consequences of varying degrees of protection. Most analysts view copyright as an economic phenomenon, and the size and health of our copyright industries measure the success of copyright policies. The constitutional text granting Congress the copyright power and the nature of special interest lobbying naturally create this economic focus; but this is a serious mistake. An exclusively economic focus makes no more sense than measuring the nutritional merits of our food supply from the size and profitability of the fast food industry.

The expressive culture that copyright protects …

Taking Back The Knife: The Ulu As An Expression Of Inuit Women's Strength, Patricia Hansen Gillam Dec 2009

Taking Back The Knife: The Ulu As An Expression Of Inuit Women's Strength, Patricia Hansen Gillam

Rural Development

The ulu is an enduring object in the lives of Inuit women which has multiple meanings as both a tool and symbol of traditional subsistence activity. While it continues to be recognized as a symbol of identity for Inuit women across the Arctic, it has received little attention by Western scientists and academics. Following the twists and turns of both de-colonizing and engendering the ulu encourages a comprehension of the profoundly symbolic meaning of the ulu with respect to Inuit women's identity. The collecting phase of the Smithsonian in Alaska and the classifying impulse of archaeological reports are examined for …

A Storm Like No Other: Changes That Shaped Seward Peninsula Communities At The Turn Of The 20th Century, Amy Russell

Arctic and Northern Studies

"This thesis explains how four events at the turn of the twentieth century--the start of an American administration, the introduction of schools and missions, the introduction of reindeer, and the 1918 influenza epidemic--brought sweeping changes to Inupiat on the Seward Peninsula, and contributed to the decline of two formerly-prominent Seward Peninsula communities: Kingegan and Kauwerak"--Leaf iii

Collection Development For The Department Of Psychology,, Charles D. Bernholz Dec 2009

Collection Development For The Department Of Psychology,, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The University of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln in 1871, but it took almost two decades until psychology courses were offered. The man who was singularly responsible for bringing psychology to the University was Professor Harry Kirk Wolfe, and thus the history of the Psychology Department begins with him.

Harry K. Wolfe enrolled as an undergraduate in the University in 1876, just five years after the University was chartered. Four years later, he graduated in a class of eight. Three years later, he went to Leipzig Germany to study in the laboratory of the founder of experimental psychology, Professor Wilhelm …

Phylogeny Of The Macaques (Cercopithecidae: Macaca) Based On Alu Elements, Jing Li, Kyudong Han, Jinchuan Xing, Heui Soo Kim, Jeffrey Rogers, Oliver A. Ryder, Todd Disotell, Bisong Yue, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Genus Macaca (Cercopithecidae: Papionini) is one of the most successful primate radiations. Despite previous studies on morphology and mitochondrial DNA analysis, a number of issues regarding the details of macaque evolution remain unsolved. Alu elements are a class of non-autonomous retroposons belonging to short interspersed elements that are specific to the primate lineage. Because retroposon insertions show very little homoplasy, and because the ancestral state (absence of the SINE) is known, Alu elements are useful genetic markers and have been utilized for analyzing primate phylogenentic relationships and human population genetic relationships. Using PCR display methodology, 298 new Alu insertions have …

Climatic Variability At Modoc Rock Shelter (Illinois) And Watson Brake (Louisiana): Biometric And Isotopic Evidence From Archaeological Freshwater Mussel Shell, Sarah Mistak Caughron

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis assesses climate change during the Hypsithermal Climatic Interval through the analysis of freshwater mussel remains from archaeological sites in Eastern North America. Modern climate data was used as a model to test the mosaic consequences of climate change. Freshwater mussels: can be used as indicators of precipitation by examining changes in overall size through time: larger mussels are found in larger streams, while smaller mussels are found in smaller streams. This study combines morphometric and isotopic data from archaeological freshwater mussels at Modoc Rock Shelter, Watson Brake, Plum Creek, Owens site, and Landerneau mounds to assess past climatic …

Inequality And Body Mass In Young Adulthood: Sex And Age Differences In Associated Effects, Jamie Lynn Boydstun Dec 2009

Inequality And Body Mass In Young Adulthood: Sex And Age Differences In Associated Effects, Jamie Lynn Boydstun

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 63 percent of the U.S. adults are overweight or obese, however all groups are not affected equally. Little research has observed the obese compared to the overweight. This study aims to examine how measures associated with health differentially influence overweight and obesity. Data from the 2007 BRFSS were analyzed using logistic regression to assess variations due to socioeconomic, demographic, and health risk measures on overweight and obesity. Variations were assessed by age groups and sex. Differences across the subgroups were tested. The results showed that associated effects of overweight and obesity for young adults differ little from those of …
