Review Of A Call To Action: An Introduction To Education, Philosophy, And Native North America By Curry Stephenson Malott, Malia Villegas
Review Of A Call To Action: An Introduction To Education, Philosophy, And Native North America By Curry Stephenson Malott, Malia Villegas
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In A Call to Action, Curry Stephenson Malott appeals to North American educators to acknowledge their essential role in the ongoing struggle for sustainable and ethical ways of living as humans. Malott joins a rising chorus of scholars who warn about a singular focus on the conflict between Indigenous and Western epistemologies (e.g., Glen Aikenhead's "Integrating Western and Aboriginal Sciences: Cross-Cultural Science Teaching" in Research in Science Education, 2001; Ray Barnhardt and A. O. Kawagley's "Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Alaska Native Ways of Knowing" in Anthropology and Education Quarterly 2005; and Ladislaus Semali and J. L.Kincheloe's editors' …
Review Of The Long Journey Of A Forgotten People: Metis Identities And Family Histories Edited By Ute Lischke And David T. Mcnab; The Western Metis: Profile Of A People Edited By Patrick C. Douaud, Mike Evans
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The recent publication of Long Journey and Western Metis is indicative of the burgeoning interest in Metis studies; there are a remarkable number of scholars, new and old, now publishing in the area. It seems likely that this burst of activity is related to the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision in R. v. Powley, 2003, S.c.c. 43 (http://www.canliLorg/en/ca/scc/ doc/2003/2003scc43/2003scc43.html) dealing with the complex issues of Metis identity and rights.
Though the impetus for the publications might be linked to a common legal event, the publications themselves are very different: The Western Metis is a collection well rooted in an …

Building A Better Honors Learning Community Through Technology, Melissa L. Johnson
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
During the first week of classes this semester, I showed a YouTube video to my professional development classes for honors freshmen. “A vision of students today,” created by Michael Wesch (2007) and his Introduction to Cultural Anthropology class at Kansas State University, depicts a realistic yet frustrating view of the learning taking place (or in this case, not taking place) in the college classroom. Students sitting in a large lecture hall bemoan the purchase of expensive but “useless” textbooks and the fact that only 18% of their professors actually know their names. One student claims that, while she will only …
Evolution And Human Nature: Comparing Honors And Traditional Pedagogies For The New Science Of The Mind, Scott M. James, Kate Bruce
Evolution And Human Nature: Comparing Honors And Traditional Pedagogies For The New Science Of The Mind, Scott M. James, Kate Bruce
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
A class on evolutionary psychology can take many forms but always involves an interdisciplinary approach because of the subject matter and topics covered. In this paper, we describe and compare three different pedagogical techniques we have used to teach the topic of evolutionary psychology; two are honors seminars and one a traditional lecture-style course.
Review Of Chevato: The Story Of The Apache Warrior Who Captured Herman Lehmann. By William Chebahtah And Nancy Mcgown Minor, Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola
Review Of Chevato: The Story Of The Apache Warrior Who Captured Herman Lehmann. By William Chebahtah And Nancy Mcgown Minor, Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This fascinating book foregrounds the oral history of Chevato (Billy Chiwat), a Lipan Apache who in May 1870 captured eleven-yearold Herman Lehmann near Fredericksburg, Texas. Orphaned when young, Chevato joined the Mescalero Apaches, who were the ones actually responsible for the kidnapping of Herman and his brother Willie. In middle age, through the influence of the powerful Comanche Quanah Parker, Chevato became a Comanche and moved to Oklahoma where he lived until his death in 1931.

Review Of "Playing Ourselves: Interpreting Native Histories At Historic Reconstructions." By Laura Peers, Sandra Dudley
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Based on research carried out over a decade into enactment at five North American reconstructed historic sites in the Great Plains and around the Great Lakes, this is essentially a book about encounters: encounters between Native interpreters and visitors at historic sites, of course-but also encounters between differing preconceptions of history, between ways of life, between people and things, and between the present and the past. Indeed, the chapters are interspersed with "vignettes" or snapshots of such encounters.
All the sites discussed in the book depict the people, activity, and material culture associated with missions and fur trading. They were …

Review Of "The Choctaws In Oklahoma: From Tribe To Nation, 1855-1970." By Clara Sue Kidwell, Robert Keith Collins
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Scholars of anthropology (particularly historical anthropology), history, and Native American studies interested in Choctaw history, cultural changes, everyday life choices, and contributions to American culture should find The Choctaws in Oklahoma: From Tribe to Nation, 1855-1970 and How Choctaws Invented Civilization and Why Choctaws Will Conquer the World important new contributions to the historical literature articulated by strong Choctaw voices. And readers interested in the complexities of Choctaw life in the Southern Plains, how Choctaws interacted with the region's other Indigenous groups (e.g., Kiowas and Comanches), and the inconsistencies between federal policies and Choctaw lived realities over time will be …

Review Of Defamiliarizing The Aboriginal: Cultural Practices And Decolonization In Canada. By Julia V. Emberley., Laura Peers
Review Of Defamiliarizing The Aboriginal: Cultural Practices And Decolonization In Canada. By Julia V. Emberley., Laura Peers
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This book examines how "representational technologies," including photography and archival material, were used to establish colonial control over Aboriginal families in Canada. Case studies include a critique of photographer Mary Schaffer's images of Aboriginal people in the Rocky Mountains, an analysis of an RCMP file concerning the disappearance of an Inuit woman and children, and a discussion of prairie writer Rudy Wiebe's retelling of Yvonne Johnson's life. Defamiliarizing the Aboriginal is a subtle addition to literature on the mechanisms of cultural representation and their dynamics within colonialism, placing these issues especially well within the framework of postcolonial and feminist politics. …
Review Of African Creeks: Estelvste And The Creek Nation. By Gary Zellar, Robbie Ethridge
Review Of African Creeks: Estelvste And The Creek Nation. By Gary Zellar, Robbie Ethridge
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Estelvste, or "black people," in the Creek Indian language, are the subjects of this well-written, absorbing story of the people of African descent whose lot in life cast them with the Creek Indians of present-day Georgia and Alabama and, after Indian Removal, present- day Oklahoma. Gary Zellar refers to them as African Creeks, distinguishing this particular population from both African Americans, Euro-American Creeks, and Indian Creeks. Such distinctions are necessary to the history of the Creek Indians because, after European contact, Creek lives became irreversibly and forever blended with those of the immigrant populations, yet the Creeks themselves adhered …
Review Of The Comanche Empire. By Pekka Hamalainen, Mariah F. Wade
Review Of The Comanche Empire. By Pekka Hamalainen, Mariah F. Wade
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Comanche Empire is an important and well-researched book that traces the development of the Comanche nation in the eastern and western borders of the Greater Southwest from the early eighteenth century through the mid-nineteenth century. Segmented into eight thematic chapters, this work explores the Comanches' sources of inward power and power over others, but privileges the Comanche perspective to place the author's conclusions within a historical context. Hamalainen's treatment of the complex relationships between the Comanches and other European and Native American societies is unique, particularly as it clarifies the social and trade mechanisms the Comanches established and nurtured …

Book Review: The Allen Site: A Paleoindian Camp In Southwestern Nebraska Edited By Douglas B. Bamforth, Daniel S. Amick
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Douglas Bamforth and his colleagues demonstrate in this edited volume the valuable role in modern archaeology for thoughtful reinvestigation of previously studied site locations and archaeological collections. Containing 14 chapters by 11 contributors, The Allen Site includes comprehensive paleoenvironmental research and detailed reanalysis of cultural materials recovered from renowned excavations conducted in the Medicine Creek Basin between 1947 and 1949, deposits that hold a series of human occupations ranging from 10,550 to 8,000 radiocarbon years in age. These new studies provide valuable improvements to our understanding of environmental change and early human adaptations during the Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene …

When Mentoring Is The Medium: Lessons Learned From A Faculty Development Initiative, Jung H. Yun, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Campuses across the country are investing considerable time, effort, and expense to replenish their faculty ranks with a new generation of scholars. How can mentoring help these new faculty juggle the many demands of surviving and thriving in academia? And how can institutions frame mentoring as a broader faculty development initiative in which faculty at all stages of the academic career can teach and learn from each other? This chapter addresses these questions by sharing the goals, design, and lessons learned from the Mutual Mentoring Initiative at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Legal Theology: Law, Modernity And The Sacred, Peter Fitzpatrick
Legal Theology: Law, Modernity And The Sacred, Peter Fitzpatrick
Seattle University Law Review
This article argues that there is both sameness and difference as between the secular and the religious, and that law, modern law, is constituently enmeshed within this sameness and difference. That combination of sameness and difference, along with the integral part of law, is traced in a cumulation of three historicities, the first being the creation of the world's imperium, of the modern world-system, in the sixteenth century. Then, with the second historicity we have the time of revolutions, seen here as almost revolutions, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. And finally, with the third historicity we have the time …
Cooperation, Coordination, And Connection: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Intersectoral Collaboration Through The Lens Of Stormwater Management, Robin Miller
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This paper describes an emerging organizational phenomenon called intersectoral collaboration as a means for delivering public services. Collaboration, and intersectoral collaboration specifically, present a new way to organize over traditional hierarchical organization. The conflict between structured and nonstructured organizations is one that has existed since people began organizing themselves (Olsen, 1965; Abrhamasson, 1993). This paper is composed of three sections. The first provides a literature review on collaboration including discussion of the benefits and roadblocks to collaborative efforts. The second portion builds on this analysis of collaborative efforts in other functions with a case study of collaboration between the city …

Possibilities Of A Third Epidemiological Occurrence, Sue A. Bentley
Possibilities Of A Third Epidemiological Occurrence, Sue A. Bentley
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibilities of a third epidemiological occurrence. An epidemiological occurrence is where large segments of population and culture have been adversely affected either by disease or through manmade causes of disease. According to World Health Organization an epidemic is an outbreak of a disease that attacks many people at the same time and may spread through more than one community. An endemic outbreak is a disease that exists permanently in a region or within a population. A pandemic is an epidemic that spreads throughout the world.
Transforming Images: Media, Sexuality And Everyday Life, Monica Leigh Edwards
Transforming Images: Media, Sexuality And Everyday Life, Monica Leigh Edwards
Dissertations
There are many scholars who are critical of modern representations of GLBTQ folks on television (see for example, Larry Gross 1999, Diane Raymond 2005). While it has been established that queer visibility has grown tremendously since the 1990's (post Ellen's coming out), many scholars, noting the absence for example of on-screen intimacy, argue that this greater visibility is still problematic. Queers are rendered a-sexual best friends to straight girls (Ingraham, 1999), and queer couples live lives modeled after "normal" heterosexuals, serving to maintain a binary of sexuality that privileges heteros (Chambers, 2006). All the while, this scholarship seems to pass …

Book Review: The Arapaho Language By Andrew Cowell, With Alonzo Moss Sr., Neyooxet Greymorning
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Arapaho Language is divided into five primary analytical areas on phonology, inflectional morphology, derivational morphology, usage, complex clauses, and syntax. Under these headings an additional 21 subfields and numerous grammatical rules are also provided. One feature that makes this book particularly beneficial is its extensive use of narrative texts, historical accounts, and life experiences of several individuals as examples for discussing how grammatical rules work within the language, which also provides helpful examples of the subtleties, complexity, and flexibility used by Arapaho speakers that differ from other Algonquian languages.
Although it is clear that this book is written primarily …

Book Review: Hard Road West: History And Geology Along The Gold Rush Trail By Keith Heyer Meldahl., Harmon D. Maher Jr.
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The dust jacket of Hard Road West promises familiar pleasures to John McPhee lovers, and so I picked the book up with great anticipation. McPhee’s works have greatly heightened the interest of writers and readers in the genre of creative nonfiction, and while for me, Keith Meldahl’s work does not quite reach McPhee’s stratospheric heights, for the right audience it is definitely a very good read.
The book is organized from east to west, forward in time, following in detail the wagon trail journey to the California gold fields. That human migration, driven by the search for geologic riches, provides …
Archeological Interpretation Of The Frontier Battle At Mud Springs, Nebraska, Peter Bleed, Douglas D. Scott
Archeological Interpretation Of The Frontier Battle At Mud Springs, Nebraska, Peter Bleed, Douglas D. Scott
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Between February 4 and 7, 1865, Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho warriors engaged a force of U.S. Army soldiers at Mud Springs, Nebraska. Historical records from both sides indicate that this fight marked an early phase of the Indian Wars. Based on systematic metal detections, firearms identification, and terrain analysis, this paper adds archeological insights into the arms and tactics used by the opposing sides. Well-armed Native fighters used terrain to approach U.S. troops, who maintained a defensive posture. U.S. soldiers appear to have dug a rifle pit to see approaching attackers.
