Algal And Cyanobacterial Saline Biofilms Of The Grande Coastal Lagoon, Lima, Peru, Haydee Montoya Jan 2009

Algal And Cyanobacterial Saline Biofilms Of The Grande Coastal Lagoon, Lima, Peru, Haydee Montoya

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Tropical coastal wetland ecosystems are widely distributed in arid regions. The Grande coastal lagoon in Peru's central plain is shallow, eutrophic and alkaline, exposed to the annual hydrological regime with flooding and desiccation periods, when a salt crust is formed. The brackish to hypersaline habitats showed salinity gradients from 2-90 ppt (NaCl) to saturation, pH values from 7.0 to 10.5, temperatures from 18 to 31 C, phosphate concentrations from 0.5 to 50 mg 1-1. Dominance of halophilic biofilms of benthic cyanobacteria followed by diatoms and the submerged macrohpytes Chara hornemannii and Ruppia maritima during the clear water state supported the …

Long-Term Mesocosm Simulation Of Algal And Archaeal Blooms In The Dead Sea Following Dilution With Red Sea Water, Aharon Oren, Jonha Gavrieli, Marco Kohen, Joseph Lati, Mordehay Aharoni, Ittai Gavrieli Jan 2009

Long-Term Mesocosm Simulation Of Algal And Archaeal Blooms In The Dead Sea Following Dilution With Red Sea Water, Aharon Oren, Jonha Gavrieli, Marco Kohen, Joseph Lati, Mordehay Aharoni, Ittai Gavrieli

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

To understand the factors that determine the extent of blooms of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella and halophilic Archaea in the Dead Sea, and to predict the possible effects of the planned conveyance of Red Sea water to the Dead Sea, we performed simulation experiments in the 0.9 m3 outdoor mesocosms on the grounds of the Dead Sea Works Ltd. at Sedom, as well as in the laboratory. The laboratory simulations showed that development of the Dunaliella was possible only when Dead Sea water (340 g 1-1 total dissolved salts) was diluted with minimally 10% (by volume) of Red Sea …

Biodiversity Of Inland Saltscapes Of The Iberian Peninsula, Katia Hueso Kortekaas, Jesus-F. Carrasco Vaya Jan 2009

Biodiversity Of Inland Saltscapes Of The Iberian Peninsula, Katia Hueso Kortekaas, Jesus-F. Carrasco Vaya

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The Iberian Peninsula hosts a wide variety of inland saltscapes, from man-made solar evaporation salterns to hyper-saline lakes and salt rivers, most of them unknown to other European countries. The present contribution deals with this diversity of saltscapes, briefly introduces their main features and locations, and presents a general overview of their conservation status. Some of their natural values are not even well understood by the scientists themselves, and therefore they are very rare and fragile and in need of protection. However, many of these natural saltscapes have been and are currently under threat, having been desiccated, used as waste …

Aral Sea: Water Level, Salinity And Long-Term Changes In Biological Communities Of An Endangered Ecosystem-Past, Present And Future, Nickolay V. Aladin, Igor S. Plotnikov, Philip Micklin, Thomas Ballatore Jan 2009

Aral Sea: Water Level, Salinity And Long-Term Changes In Biological Communities Of An Endangered Ecosystem-Past, Present And Future, Nickolay V. Aladin, Igor S. Plotnikov, Philip Micklin, Thomas Ballatore

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The Aral Sea, which before 1960 was the fourth largest lake in the world, has now split into four separate water bodies. This break-up and desiccation mainly resulted from upstream irrigation withdrawals from the two main influent rivers, the Syr Darya and and Amu Darya. The negative effects on the lake ecosystem due to declining water level and increasing salinity, as well as the profound socioeconomic and human impacts to the riparian populations, have been well documented. This paper focuses on the conservation and rehabilitation efforts for four remaining key water bodies of the Aral Sea: the Northern (Small) Aral …

Study Of The Saline Lakes Of The Esperance Hinterland, Western Australia, With Special Reference To The Roles Of Acidity And Episodicity, Brian V. Timms Jan 2009

Study Of The Saline Lakes Of The Esperance Hinterland, Western Australia, With Special Reference To The Roles Of Acidity And Episodicity, Brian V. Timms

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Most saline lakes are alkaline, but acid ground waters in some southern areas in Western Australia cause some to have pHs as low as 3. Their fauna is severely restricted to an endemic brine shrimp (Paratemia sp.), a copepod Calamoecia trilobata, and two species of ostracods, including Australocypris bennetti. Nearby alkaline salt lakes show an attenuating fauna with increasing salinity with dominance by various crustaceans particularly Paratemia spp., various ostracods, copepods, Daphnia (Daphniopsis) truncata, Haloniscus searlei and snails including Coxiella glauerti, as is typical in salinas in southern Australia. When both types of lakes fill with episodic rain, their salinity …

Oxygen Production And Use In Benthic Mats Of Solar Salt Ponds, Mark U. Coleman Jan 2009

Oxygen Production And Use In Benthic Mats Of Solar Salt Ponds, Mark U. Coleman

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The benthic mat in the ponds of solar salt producers is important because as a beneficial effect, the mat reduces loss of brine from the field but it unfortunately also supports species which can have a serious detrimental effect on the halite crystallization process. Anaerobic and aerobic activity of the mat which is thought to be a significant factor in the management of the salt field is not quantified by traditional monitoring methods. A method of measuring the generation of oxygen from benthic algal mats, tested in the north west of Western Australia at three solar salt fields has been …

Microbial Communities In Salt Lakes: Phylogenetic Diversity, Metabolic Diversity, And In Situ Activities, Aharon Oren, Bonnie K. Baxter, Bart C. Weimer

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

A roundtable discussion was held on Monday, 12 May 2008, following the sessions on 'Microorganisms in Hypersaline Environments' at the 10th Conference on Salt Lake Research & 2008 FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake Issues Forum, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Among the aspects discussed were: 1. The gap between our knowledge of the microorganisms isolated in culture and the true microbial diversity as apparent when using culture-independent techniques, in most cases based on the characterization of small subunit ribosomal RNA genes; 2. The metabolic diversity of the microorganisms inhabiting saline and hypersaline lakes and the lack of information to …

Arqueologias Americanas. La Representación Del Mundo Antiguo Mexicano Y El Debate Estético En El Contexto Europeo De La Primera Mitad Del Siglo Xix, Antonio E. De Pedro Robles

It Is The East And Zulima Is The Sin: Shifting Representations Of Muslim Spain In Hartzenbusch’S Los Amantes De Teruel, Christine L. Blackshaw

Decimonónica

While Los amantes de Teruel was not Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch’s most widely-performed drama during his lifetime, it is, nonetheless, the one for which he is best remembered today. From its first performance on January 19, 1837, many sensed that the play would become part of the Spanish literary canon, as is evidenced by the praise from the critic for the Semanario Pintoresco Español, who boldly proclaimed, “el Señor Hartzenbusch se ha colocado en este punto a la altura de los grandes modelos, y en casi todo el drama parece revelar un alma del temple de Rojas y Calderones” (5 …

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú Jan 2009

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications

The article examines how adverse climatic conditions and high food prices influenced the opportunities of peasants in pre-industrial Mexico between 1730 and 1835. Particular attention is paid to data of soldier heights, global climate events, warm-season tree growth, and real food prices to determine how these factors may have affected urban and rural populations. Declines were seen in the general standard of living and average height, while the cost of food increased. It is argued that distribution and acquisition of food has an equal influence on biological well-being as the availability of food at any specific given time.

New Perspectives On Ecological Mechanisms Affecting Coral Recruitment On Reefs, Raphael Ritson-Williams, Suzanne N. Arnold, Nicole D. Fogarty, Robert S. Steneck, Mark J. A. Vermeij, Valerie J. Paul Jan 2009

New Perspectives On Ecological Mechanisms Affecting Coral Recruitment On Reefs, Raphael Ritson-Williams, Suzanne N. Arnold, Nicole D. Fogarty, Robert S. Steneck, Mark J. A. Vermeij, Valerie J. Paul

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Coral mortality has increased in recent decades, making coral recruitment more important than ever in sustaining coral reef ecosystems and contributing to their resilience. This review summarizes existing information on ecological factors affecting scleractinian coral recruitment. Successful recruitment requires the survival of coral offspring through sequential life history stages. Larval availability, successful settlement, and post-settlement survival and growth are all necessary for the addition of new coral individuals to a reef and ultimately maintenance or recovery of coral reef ecosystems. As environmental conditions continue to become more hostile to corals on a global scale, further research on fertilization ecology, connectivity, …

Islam : Between Message And History, Abdelmadjid Charfi, Abdou Filali-Ansary, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed, David Bond

In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers

This book could easily be called ‘A Guide for the Modern Muslim’, someone for whom the sentiments of his or her ancestors resonate but who cannot accept the canonised formulas of a prescriptive education.

Charfi spells out what for him is the essential message of Islam, followed by a history of its unfolding through the person of the Prophet Muhammad, whom he perceives as a visionary seeking to change the ideals, attitudes and behaviours of the society in which he lived. Charfi delineates the message and its history as two separate elements, conflated by tradition.

Charfi confronts with great lucidity …

Philosophy and Religious Studies

This paper examines Tezuka Osamu’s (1928-89) retelling of the biography of the Buddha to appeal to readers of the shōnen genre of manga. Tezuka is a well-known Japanese manga writer and artist, cartoonist, animator, film producer, and activist. In 1972, he began a series of manga adventures in Japan titled Buddha (ブッダ). The series ran to 14 editions in that country, ending in 1983. Subsequently, it was translated and reproduced in eight editions worldwide. This critically acclaimed series, which won the Eisner Award in 2004 and 2005 and Harvey Awards the same years, is considered the last great work in …

The Constitutional Logic Of Campaign Finance Regulation, Samuel Issacharoff Jan 2009

The Constitutional Logic Of Campaign Finance Regulation, Samuel Issacharoff

Faculty Articles

This essay explores the potential implications of the creation of a distinct "election period" through the BCRA reforms to campaign finance law. The idea of a separate set of rights of expression during the immediate pre-election period is a relative newcomer to American law, but is a central feature of campaign finance law in other countries. The creation of a defined election period is the underpinning of strong restrictions on political speech in countries such as Britain, and is currently the source of tension under European law. Recent decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, most notably in Bowman …

Money As A Thumb On The Constitutional Scale: Weighing Speech Against Publicity Rights, Diane L. Zimmerman Jan 2009

Money As A Thumb On The Constitutional Scale: Weighing Speech Against Publicity Rights, Diane L. Zimmerman

Faculty Articles

Although they have differed in their approaches, courts deciding right of publicity cases have almost uniformly assumed that the appropriate way to test the constitutionality of the claim is to weigh the plaintiff's publicity interest against the defendant's free speech claim. The question left unanswered is what could possible give sufficient weight, in particular to a nonadvertising publicity claim, to allow it plausibly to outweigh the first amendment. The paper argues that no plausible jurisprudential predicate for this practice exists unless one is willing to accept the argument that interests expressed in economic terms are inherently weightier than traditional liberty …

Seal Bounties In Maine And Massachusetts, 1888 To 1962, Barbarai Lelli, David Harris Ph.D, Aboueissa Abouel-Makarim

Faculty Publications

Maine and Massachusetts paid bounties on seals during the 19th and 20th centuries. To determine the number of seals killed for bounty, we examined historical records of bounty claims, and used geographic information systems and multiple linear regression to find predictors of places where large numbers of bounties were paid. We found records of 24,831 bounties paid in Maine (1891-1945) and 15,690 in Massachusetts (1888-1962), Considering possible fraud, missing data, and seals struck and lost, this suggests that 72,284 to 135,498 seals were killed in the bounty hunt, probably enough to account for regional declines in seal populations. Larger numbers …
