Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Background Considering increasing reports on human infections by Plasmodium knowlesi in Southeast Asian countries, blood samples collected during two large cross-sectional malariometric surveys carried out in a forested area of central Vietnam in 2004 and 2005 were screened for this parasite. Methods Blood samples collected at the 2004 survey and positive for Plasmodium malariae were randomly selected for PCR analysis detecting P. knowlesi. Blood samples collected in 2005 from the same individuals were screened again for P. knowlesi. Positive samples were confirmed by sequencing. Family members of positive cases who participated in both surveys were also screened. Results Ninety-five samples …

The Water Excise Tax: Preserving A Necessary Resource, Thomas Lee Jan 2009

The Water Excise Tax: Preserving A Necessary Resource, Thomas Lee

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This Comment will first examine the history and current state of laws regulating water use in the United States, and the commercial uses that are the target of the proposed Water Excise Tax. The next step will be to discuss the tax itself from several perspectives: First, its constitutionality, structure, and application in the framework of existing water law; second, its advantages and disadvantages based on its regulatory nature and scope; and finally, the normative benefits of indirect regulation. The theses underlying all of these sections are that public drinking water will become scarce in the very near future, that …

Nicotine-Evoked Conditioned Responding Is Dependent On Concentration Of Sucrose Unconditioned Stimulus, Jennifer E. Murray, Rachel D. Penrod, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2009

Nicotine-Evoked Conditioned Responding Is Dependent On Concentration Of Sucrose Unconditioned Stimulus, Jennifer E. Murray, Rachel D. Penrod, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have shown that the interoceptive nicotine conditional stimulus (CS) functions similarly to exteroceptive CSs such as lights or environments. For instance, the appetitive conditioned response (CR) evoked when nicotine is repeatedly paired with sucrose presentations (the unconditioned stimulus; US) is sensitive to changes in training dose (CS salience) and the contiguity between the CS effects and sucrose. The current study was conducted to extend this research by examining the possible role of US intensity in CR acquisition and maintenance. Rats were trained using one of four sucrose concentrations: 0, 4, 16, or 32% (w/v). On nicotine sessions (0.4 …

Reduced Genomic Potential For Secreted Plant Cell-Wall-Degrading Enzymes In The Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Amanita Bisporigera, Based On The Secretome Of Trichoderma Reesei, Subashini Nagendran, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Janet M. Paper, Nighat Aslam, Jonathan D. Walton Jan 2009

Reduced Genomic Potential For Secreted Plant Cell-Wall-Degrading Enzymes In The Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Amanita Bisporigera, Based On The Secretome Of Trichoderma Reesei, Subashini Nagendran, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Janet M. Paper, Nighat Aslam, Jonathan D. Walton

Heather Hallen-Adams Publications

Based on the analysis of its genome sequence, the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) basidiomycetous fungus Laccaria bicolor was shown to be lacking many of the major classes of secreted enzymes that depolymerize plant cell wall polysaccharides. To test whether this is also a feature of other ECM fungi, we searched a survey genome database of Amanita bisporigera with the proteins found in the secretome of Trichoderma reesei (syn. Hypocrea jecorina), a biochemically well-characterized industrial fungus. Additional proteins were also used as queries to compensate for major groups of cell-wall-degrading enzymes lacking in the secretome of T. reesei and to substantiate conclusions …

A Planet In Our Solar System, John Dillon Jan 2009

A Planet In Our Solar System, John Dillon

Theses & ETDs

This body of work was made over the course of two or three years around my home in Chicago. Originally my project began as a formal photographic exercise as I explored my environment with several late nineteenth and early twentieth century painters and photographers in mind. I was specifically interested in ideas concerning the representation of three dimensions on a two-dimensional canvas or piece of paper. As I continued making images, I became more interested in the photograph's potential to alter the world that it depicts and even to create an entirely new kind of world while at the same …

Eulogy For Apollo: Synesthesia And Musicality In Andrei Bely's Petersburg And James Joyce's Ulysses, David Rodriguez Jan 2009

Eulogy For Apollo: Synesthesia And Musicality In Andrei Bely's Petersburg And James Joyce's Ulysses, David Rodriguez

Theses & ETDs

Petersburg and Ulysses are often compared within the Modernist movement as texts which capture the urban landscapes of the early twentieth-century by means of radical experimentation with language. Petersburg examines a specific tumultuous moment in Russian history, October of 1905, and tethers it to a unique brand of synesthetic and musical poetics. The narrative portrays the cosmic and ineffable qualities of the political and social climate, suggesting an apocalyptic transformation taking place within the city. Nietzsche's Apollonian-Dionysian duality of the arts developed in Birth of Tragedy can be usefully applied to understanding the novel's complex imagery and style, which assert …

Reflections Of Cultural Voices In The Magic Mirror Of "Snow White", Ashley Rose Johnson Jan 2009

Reflections Of Cultural Voices In The Magic Mirror Of "Snow White", Ashley Rose Johnson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis analyzes how the voice of the magic mirror of “Snow White,” by the Brothers Grimm, reflects the cultural contexts that have made the story one of the most well known tales in the Western fairy tale canon. The primary text and films reflect the cultural context of their authors and directors. The Grimms’ “Snow White” reflects the voice of nineteenth-century patriarchy. Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs presents the tale from a culture escaping the economic depression of the 1930s in the United States. Cohn’s A Tale of Terror reflects the internalized value of motherhood and competition …

Telling Secrets: Alternative Paths To Truth In Alice Munro's Open Secrets, Caitlin Kindervatter-Clark Jan 2009

Telling Secrets: Alternative Paths To Truth In Alice Munro's Open Secrets, Caitlin Kindervatter-Clark

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I examine narrative strategies in Open Secrets, a short story collection by Alice Munro. I focus specifically on "A Wilderness Station," "Open Secrets," and "Vandals," arguing that each story subverts a specific literary genrethe wilderness narrative, the detective story, and the romance, respectivelyand that Munro uses our generic expectations to emphasize the ways in which knowledge can be obtained through emotions. With reference to Morwenna Griffiths' explanation of "consciousnessraising," I explore the way that the subjective, emotional experiences of Munro's characters point us towards larger truths with political implications. Emotions and subjectivity have traditionally been viewed as …

An Investigation Of Shared Intentionality As Evidenced By Informative Communication In Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Maya Nicole Gonczi Jan 2009

An Investigation Of Shared Intentionality As Evidenced By Informative Communication In Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), Maya Nicole Gonczi

Theses & ETDs

Shared intentionality is the ability to share a goal, exhibited by both an ability to understand the mental states of others and the motivation to share attention with them. This skill is currently considered to be what separates humans from other species; however, animal subjects, specifically chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), sampled in this area have only been tested for their ability to comprehend instances of shared intentionality. To test if chimpanzees are capable of producing acts of shared intentionality, 30 subjects were faced with an experimenter who required communicative help in order to find a misplaced object. The only subjects who …

Difficult Hope: An Ethnography Of The Bread And Puppet Theater, Austin Mccann Jan 2009

Difficult Hope: An Ethnography Of The Bread And Puppet Theater, Austin Mccann

Theses & ETDs

This is an ethnography of Peter Schumann's Bread and Puppet Theater, based in Glover, Vermont. Bread and Puppet is anomalous: this anti-capitalist "Cheap Art" organization has maintained its distinctive aesthetic and its radical independence for more than four decades. The theater is based on the charismatic authority of Peter Schumann, a German artist concerned with cultural revival in the face of political horror. Schumann's promulgation of the synergy of art and politics has serious implications for the reception and canonization of his work. My thesis interrogates Bread and Puppet's aesthetic, then turns inward to questions of structure. The ways in …

Language As Prosthesis: The Re-Embodiment Of Four Disabled Authors, Dorothy Dubrule Jan 2009

Language As Prosthesis: The Re-Embodiment Of Four Disabled Authors, Dorothy Dubrule

Theses & ETDs

Within the works of four disabled authors, language reveals itself as a prosthetic sense organ. As prosthesis, language is of the body, participating in an ongoing process of re-embodiment wherein the relationship between the disabled author and the world is affected by his writing. French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty provides a framework for understanding the constitution of a body-subject in its sensuous dialogue with the world. Influenced by the philosophical works of Merleau-Ponty, among others, a group of American writers calling themselves "Language poets" seek to reveal language as our primary mode of perception. While their individual projects deviate from one …

Striving For Participation: An Analysis Of Community-Based Natural Resource Management In Botswana, Catherine Gowan Jan 2009

Striving For Participation: An Analysis Of Community-Based Natural Resource Management In Botswana, Catherine Gowan

Theses & ETDs

Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) programs are at the forefront of conservation and development ideology. Founded on the premise that economic incentives can provide reasons for rural people in the developing world to conserve wildlife and other natural resources, CBNRM programs have been implemented all across southern Africa for the past two decades. In addition to conserving wildlife, these dual conservation and development programs are meant to empower rural people by encouraging them to manage and participate in the decision-making process. Despite the promise of CBNRM, implementation has not gone smoothly in Botswana (or most other countries in which is …

Global Transitions: A Visual Portrayal Of Anthropogenic Impacts On The Environment, Deanna Erickson Jan 2009

Global Transitions: A Visual Portrayal Of Anthropogenic Impacts On The Environment, Deanna Erickson

Theses & ETDs

The Earth has been considerably altered by human influence with serious environmental consequences. Increasing population and consumption rates are depleting forests, oil, and freshwater resources. Land converted for agriculture and urbanization degrades essential natural ecosystems. Water and air pollution are destroying habitats and endangering the plant and animal species that depend on them. Humans are intentionally altering sensitive cycles, ignoring the important services provided by maintaining balance in atmospheric, hydrologic, and terrestrial cycles. These alterations are increasing the severity and impacts of climate change for the future. A combination of changing policy and enhancing personal responsibility could benefit the world …

Representations Of Women In The Work Of Gustave Flaubert And Leo Tolstoy, Jillian Horowitz Jan 2009

Representations Of Women In The Work Of Gustave Flaubert And Leo Tolstoy, Jillian Horowitz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines works by two recognized masters of Realist fiction, Gustave Flaubert and Leo Tolstoy, in light of contemporary feminist theories. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: to examine both the canonical novels and lesser-known short stories of these Realist writers and to consider a range of feminist approaches to literature. The first chapter reads Flaubert's short story "A Simple Heart" ("Un Coeur Simple") (1877) in conjunction with Gayatri C. Spivak and post-colonial, post-modernist theory. The second chapter examines Leo Tolstoy's novella "Family Happiness" (1859) through the lens of ecofeminism, using Sherry B. Ortner's essay "Is Female to …
