How Coupled Are Decoupled Farm Payments? A Review Of The Evidence, Arathi Bhaskar, John C. Beghin Jan 2009

How Coupled Are Decoupled Farm Payments? A Review Of The Evidence, Arathi Bhaskar, John C. Beghin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This survey paper explores the literature on decoupling of farm programs that has emerged in the last 10 years. The paper identifies and assesses the various channels of potential coupling of decoupled farm payments and provides a taxonomy of coupling mechanisms found in theoretical and empirical papers. Coupling of decoupled payments is pervasive but effects when measurable are small, with the exception of the impact on land values. The paper points to unresolved issues on potential coupling mechanisms for further research.

Domestic subsidies to agriculture were brought under the discipline of global trade rules for the first time in the …

A System For Estimating Bowen Ratio And Evaporation From Waste Lagoons, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood, John H. Loughrin, Nanh Lovanh, Monica V. Motley

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

A low‐cost system was deployed above a swine waste lagoon to obtain estimates of Bowen ratios and characterize lagoon temperatures. The system consisted of humidity and temperature sensors and anemometers deployed above the lagoon, water temperature sensors, and a meteorological station located by the lagoon. To evaluate the system, data was analyzed from the 25th through 28th June 2007. Bowen ratios showed diurnal behavior near the lagoon surface characterized by negative values during day and positive ones at night. Latent (evaporation) and sensible heat fluxes were towards the atmosphere and the lagoon, respectively for most of the day. A diurnal …

Clues To The Medieval Destabilization Of The Nebraska Sand Hills, Usa, From Ancient Pocket Gopher Burrows, Rebecca L. Schmeisser, David B. Loope, David A. Wedin

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Nebraska Sand Hills are a stabilized dune field in the central United States that reflect past conditions of drought. The most recent drought, known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly, occurred from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1300 and had an enormous effect on the thriving prairie ecosystem, which included large populations of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius). Burrows of these organisms across a paleosol-eolian sand boundary in the Sand Hills indicate abrupt climate change during the transition from stabilized to active dune field and from humid to arid conditions. Medieval gophers tunneled at greater depths below the …

Power Of Models In Longitudinal Study: Findings From A Full- Crossed Simulation Design, Hua Fang, Gordon P. Brooks, Maria L. Rizzo, Kimberly A. Espy, Robert S. Barcikowski Jan 2009

Power Of Models In Longitudinal Study: Findings From A Full- Crossed Simulation Design, Hua Fang, Gordon P. Brooks, Maria L. Rizzo, Kimberly A. Espy, Robert S. Barcikowski

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Because the power properties of traditional repeated measures and hierarchical multivariate linear models have not been clearly determined in the balanced design for longitudinal studies in the literature, the authors present a power comparison study of traditional repeated measures and hierarchical multivariate linear models under 3 variance-covariance structures. The results from a full-crossed simulation design suggest that traditional repeated measures have significantly higher power than do hierarchical multivariate linear models for main effects, but they have significantly lower power for interaction effects in most situations. Significant power differences are also exhibited when power is compared across different covariance structures.

Videopoetry: Integrating Video, Poetry And History In The Classroom, James Armstrong, Peter Lutze, Laura Woodworth-Ney

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

VideoPoetry integrates video and poetry to explore historical or geographic subjects. VideoPoetry is both a process and a product. This paper will use a short VideoPoem, "Mary Hallock Foote at Stone House," to demonstrate how students of all educational levels can become engaged in creating VideoPoetry. Each VideoPoem offers students a cross-disciplinary experience that involves research, analysis of information, imaginative writing and video composition leading to a classroom presentation of the final product.

As a process VideoPoetry requires the investigation of a subject, in this case, Mary Hallock Foote, artist and illustrator of the Western United States. Based on the …

The Convent As Cultural Conduit: Irish Matronage In Early Modern Spain, Andrea Knox Jan 2009

The Convent As Cultural Conduit: Irish Matronage In Early Modern Spain, Andrea Knox

Quidditas

Irish catholic women religious who migrated to Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries established a strong tradition of schools, hospitals and charitable institutions. Education and learning were important to Irish communities, and were recognised within Spain. Irish nuns and their convents were not part of an enclosed tradition and outreach work was a central aim. Sponsorship links between women were part of a collective plan, and cultural matronage by and for women appears to have been very effective. Censorship by the Inquisition and tridentine orthodoxy was contested by women’s religious houses which resisted censorship of book collections and art …

Distribution And Abundance Of Host-Seeking Culex Species At Three Proximate Locations With Different Levels Of West Nile Virus Activity, Ilia Rochlin, Howard S. Ginsberg, Scott R. Campbell Jan 2009

Distribution And Abundance Of Host-Seeking Culex Species At Three Proximate Locations With Different Levels Of West Nile Virus Activity, Ilia Rochlin, Howard S. Ginsberg, Scott R. Campbell

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Culex species were monitored at three proximate sites with historically different West Nile virus (WNV) activities. The site with human WNV transmission (epidemic) had the lowest abundance of the putative bridge vectors, Culex pipiens and Cx. salinarius. The site with horse cases but not human cases (epizootic) had the highest percent composition of Cx. salinarius, whereas the site with WNV-positive birds only (enzootic) had the highest Cx. pipiens abundance and percent composition. A total of 29 WNV-positive Culex pools were collected at the enzootic site, 17 at the epidemic site, and 14 at the epizootic site. Published models …

Cardiac Asystole At Birth: Is Hypovolemic Shock The Cause?, Judith S. Mercer, Debra A. Erickson-Owens, R. Skovgaard

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

A birth involving shoulder dystocia can rapidly deteriorate—from a fetus with a reassuring tracing in the minutes before birth, to a neonate needing aggressive resuscitation. Infants experiencing a traumatic birth involving shoulder dystocia may be severely compromised, even when the preceding labor was uncomplicated. This paper presents two cases in which infants had normal heart beats recorded 5–10 min before birth and were born with cardiac asystole following shoulder dystocia. Often, in cases of shoulder dystocia, infants shift blood to the placenta due to the tight compressive squeeze of the body in the birth canal (along with cord compression) and …

Activities Of Daptomycin And Vancomycin Alone And In Combination With Rifampin And Gentamicin Against Biofilm-Forming Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates In An Experimental Model Of Endocarditis, Kerry L. Laplante, Woodmansee Jan 2009

Activities Of Daptomycin And Vancomycin Alone And In Combination With Rifampin And Gentamicin Against Biofilm-Forming Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates In An Experimental Model Of Endocarditis, Kerry L. Laplante, Woodmansee

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

The findings of clinical and in vitro research support the theory that infective endocarditis (IE)-causing bacteria form biofilms and that biofilms negatively affect treatment outcomes. The purpose of the present study was to quantify the biofilm formation of methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates obtained from patients with IE and to evaluate the in vitro activities of daptomycin and vancomycin alone and in combination with rifampin (rifampicin) or gentamicin while monitoring the isolates for the development of resistance. A high-inoculum, stationary-phase infection model of IE was used to simulate the pharmacokinetics in humans of daptomycin at 6 mg/kg of body …

In Vitro Activities Of Telavancin And Vancomycin Against Biofilm-Producing Staphylococcus Aureus, S. Epidermidis, And Enterococcus Faecalis Strains, Kerry L. Laplante, A. Mermel

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

We investigated the activities of telavancin and vancomycin against biofilm-producing Staphylococcus and Enterococcus strains. At clinically attainable concentrations, telavancin was active against bacteria embedded in biofilm (minimal biofilm eradication concentration [MBEC], 0.125 to 2 μg/ml) and inhibited biofilm formation at concentrations below the MIC. Vancomycin did not demonstrate the same activity (MBEC, ≥512 μg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Telavancin may have a unique role in biofilm-associated infections.

Synchronization Of Pancreatic Islet Oscillations By Intrapancreatic Ganglia: A Modeling Study, B. Fendler, M. Zhang, L. Satin, R. Bertram

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Abstract

Plasma insulin measurements from mice, rats, dogs, and humans indicate that insulin levels are oscillatory, reflecting pulsatile insulin secretion from individual islets. An unanswered question, however, is how the activity of a population of islets is coordinated to yield coherent oscillations in plasma insulin. Here, using mathematical modeling, we investigate the feasibility of a potential islet synchronization mechanism, cholinergic signaling. This hypothesis is based on well-established experimental evidence demonstrating intrapancreatic parasympathetic (cholinergic) ganglia and recent in vitro evidence that a brief application of a muscarinic agonist can transiently synchronize islets. We demonstrate using mathematical modeling that periodic pulses of …

Geocentric Gestural Deixis Among Yucatec Maya (Quintana Roo, México), Olivier Le Guen Jan 2009

Geocentric Gestural Deixis Among Yucatec Maya (Quintana Roo, México), Olivier Le Guen

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Fieldwork conducted among the Yucatec Maya of Mexico reveals that this group preferentially uses a geocentric frame of reference in both linguistic and non-linguistic tasks. Contrary to other cultural groups (such as the Guugu Yimithir of Australia or Tzeltal of México), this frame does not seem to rely on the use of specific spatial terms (such as cardinal directions for instance). Because linguistic evidence is not sufficient to determine which frame of reference is used, attention to gestural deixis is particularly relevant. Using a comparative French example, we present a method of analysis for gestural deixis and show that Yucatec …

Life History Parameters Of The Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaengliae) In The Waters Of The Gulf Of Maine For The 2007 Feeding Season, Meghan Wert

Undergraduate Review

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae) is an endangered species of baleen whale that feeds in the waters of the Gulf of Maine during the spring, summer and fall. The worldwide population of humpback whales ranges from 60,000 to 80,000 individuals and the population within the Gulf of Maine is estimated between 9,000 to 11,000. Humpback whales are a large baleen whale that reaches an average length of 40 to 50 feet and a weight of 35 to 40 tons. Although protected worldwide since the International Whaling Commission in 1964, this population has increased slowly and is still considered …

Reconsidering The Mind/Body Distinction: Towards A Continuist Ontology Of Consciousness, Michael Robillard Jan 2009

Reconsidering The Mind/Body Distinction: Towards A Continuist Ontology Of Consciousness, Michael Robillard

Undergraduate Review

In his paper, “The State and Fate of Contemporary Philosophy of Mind,” John Haldane likens the present condition of Philosophy of Mind to that of the philosophically stultifying period of late scholasticism, where naming took the place of explaining, and philosophy was reduced to taxonomy. Haldane argues that our current physicalistic lexicon has made it virtually “impossible to accommodate the basic features of mindedness revealed in reflection and direct experience.” For Philosophy of Mind to progress, Haldane argues, we must “make space” for alternative modes of knowing that exist beyond the bounds of our current, overly physicalistic terminology.

Ovine Progressive Pneumonia Provirus Levels Are Unaffected By The Prion 171r Allele In An Idaho Sheep Flock, Robert D. Harrington, Lynn M. Herrmann-Hoesing, Stephen N. White, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Donald P. Knowles Jan 2009

Ovine Progressive Pneumonia Provirus Levels Are Unaffected By The Prion 171r Allele In An Idaho Sheep Flock, Robert D. Harrington, Lynn M. Herrmann-Hoesing, Stephen N. White, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Donald P. Knowles

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Selective breeding of sheep for arginine (R) at prion gene (PRNP) codon 171 confers resistance to classical scrapie. However, other effects of 171R selection are uncertain. Ovine progressive pneumonia/Maedi-Visna virus (OPPV) may infect up to 66% of a flock thus any affect of 171R selection on OPPV susceptibility or disease progression could have major impact on the sheep industry. Hypotheses that the PRNP 171R allele is 1) associated with the presence of OPPV provirus and 2) associated with higher provirus levels were tested in an Idaho ewe flock. OPPV provirus was found in 226 of 358 …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The examination of rectoanal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (RAMALT) biopsy specimens for the diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies has been described in sheep, elk, and small numbers of mule and white-tailed deer. Previous sample numbers have been too small to validate examination of this type of tissue as a viable antemortem diagnostic test. In this study, we examined RAMALT collected postmortem from 76 white-tailed deer removed from a farm in Wisconsin known to be affected by chronic wasting disease (CWD) and from 210 free-ranging white-tailed deer harvested from an area in Wisconsin where the overall prevalence of CWD among the deer …

Monitoring And Assessment Of Wolf-Ungulate Interactions And Population Trends Within The Greater Yellowstone Area, Southwestern Montana, And Montana Statewide, Kenneth L. Hamlin, Julie A. Cunningham, Kurt Alt

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

The impacts of wolves on elk and other ungulates is perhaps one of the most controversial wildlife-related issues faced by people that co-inhabit landscapes with these species. This is certainly true in Montana, where the issue often involves widely disparate opinions and values. In the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) and southwest Montana in particular, public interest is heightened in this issue. The GYA and southwest Montana generate approximately half of the Montana statewide elk hunter days afield and elk harvest annually. The impacts of wolves on elk populations are front and center in the minds of many elk hunters and …
